High-Resolution Surveys Along The Hot Spot–Affected Galapagos Spreading Center: 1. Distribution Of Hydrothermal Activity, Edward T. Baker, Rachel M. Haymon, Joseph A. Resing, Scott M. White, Sharon L. Walker, Ken C. Macdonald, Ko-Ichi Nakamura

Faculty Publications

The spatial density of hydrothermal activity along most mid-ocean ridges is a robust linear function of spreading rate (or magmatic budget), but extreme crustal properties may alter this relationship. In 2005–2006 we tested the effect of thickened crust on hydrothermal activity using high-resolution mapping of plumes overlying the hot spot–affected Galapagos Spreading Center from 95o to 89o42'W (~560 km of ridge crest). Plume mapping discovered only two active, high-temperature vent fields, subsequently confirmed by camera tows, though strong plume evidence indicated minor venting from at least six other locations. Total plume incidence (ph), the fraction of ridge …

Physics Faculty Publications

We report electrical measurements on an n-type Si1−xGex/Si/Si1−xGex double-barrier structure grown on a partially relaxed Si1−yGey buffer layer. Resonance tunneling of Δ4band electrons is demonstrated. This is attributed to the strain splitting in the SiGe buffer layer where the Δ4 band is lowest in energy at the electrode. Since the Δ4 band electrons have a much lighter effective mass along the direction of tunneling current in comparison with that of the Δ2 band electrons, this work presents an advantage over those …

Surface Magnetoelectric Effect In Ferromagnetic Metal Films, Chun-Gang Duan, Julian P. Velev, Renat F. Sabirianov, Zigiang Zhu, Junhao Chu, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal Sep 2008

Surface Magnetoelectric Effect In Ferromagnetic Metal Films, Chun-Gang Duan, Julian P. Velev, Renat F. Sabirianov, Zigiang Zhu, Junhao Chu, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Physics Faculty Publications

A surface magnetoelectric effect is revealed by density-functional calculations that are applied to ferromagnetic Fe(001), Ni(001), and Co(0001) films in the presence of an external electric field. The effect originates from spin-dependent screening of the electric field which leads to notable changes in the surface magnetization and the surface magnetocrystalline anisotropy. These results are of considerable interest in the area of electrically controlled magnetism and magnetoelectric phenomena.

Movement Strategies Of Seed Predators As Determinants Of Plant Recruitment Patterns, Lorenzo Mari, Renato Casagrandi, Marino Gatto, Tal Avgar, Ran Nathan Sep 2008

Movement Strategies Of Seed Predators As Determinants Of Plant Recruitment Patterns, Lorenzo Mari, Renato Casagrandi, Marino Gatto, Tal Avgar, Ran Nathan

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Plant recruitment in nature exhibits several distinctive patterns ranging from hump shaped to monotonically decreasing with distance from the seed source. We investigate the role of post-dispersal seed predation in shaping these patterns, introducing a new mechanistic model that explicitly accounts for the movement strategy used by seed eaters. The model consists of two partial differential equations describing the spatiotemporal dynamics of both seed and predator densities. The movement strategy is defined by how predators move in response to the different cues they can use to search for seeds. These cues may be seed density, seed intake, distance from the …

Applications Of The Bivariate Gamma Distribution In Nutritional Epidemiology And Medical Physics, Jolene Barker Sep 2008

Applications Of The Bivariate Gamma Distribution In Nutritional Epidemiology And Medical Physics, Jolene Barker

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis the utility of a bivariate gamma distribution is explored. In the field of nutritional epidemiology a nutrition density transformation is used to reduce collinearity. This phenomenon will be shown to result due to the independent variables following a bivariate gamma model. In the field of radiation oncology paired comparison of variances is often performed. The bivariate gamma model is also appropriate for fitting correlated variances. A method for simulating bivariate gamma random variables is presented. This method is used to generate data from several bivariate gamma models and the asymptotic properties of a test statistic, suggested for …

1.2-Micron Multi-Section Quantum Dot Superluminescent Diodes, Therese Saiz Sep 2008

1.2-Micron Multi-Section Quantum Dot Superluminescent Diodes, Therese Saiz

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Superluminescent diodes (SLD) with a center wavelength of 1.2μm are of interest for use in medical imaging of skin tissue especially in the field of optical coherence tomography (OCT). In this thesis a ridge-waveguide multi-section quantum dot SLD that emits at 1.2μm with a bandwidth greater than 100nm and a power greater than 0.2mW is presented. The multi-section SLD allows simultaneous tuning of the ground state emission and excited state emission, resulting in wide bandwidth and high power. Theoretical equations describing the intensity output of the multi-section SLD configuration are presented. It is found that these equations are able to …

The Effects Of Non-Uniform Illumination On The Performance Of Series Connected Photovoltaic Arrays, Jason Shelton Sep 2008

The Effects Of Non-Uniform Illumination On The Performance Of Series Connected Photovoltaic Arrays, Jason Shelton

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Optical power transfer has several advantages that make this technology useful in many applications. Optical power transfer is immune to the noise generating effects of Radio Frequency (RF) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Transferring power optically also has the benefit of generating electricity in regions where electrical isolation is required. Using Series Connected Photovoltaic Arrays (SCPA) for voltage conversion has the advantage in that high voltage can be directly generated in a small volume. These advantages have led to applications in which the optical power is transferred over a fiber optic and converted to electrical power by using an SCPA. Fiber …

Application Of Optimization Techniques To Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded Waveform Design, Todd W. Beard Sep 2008

Application Of Optimization Techniques To Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded Waveform Design, Todd W. Beard

Theses and Dissertations

A design process is demonstrated for a coexistent scenario containing Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded (SMSE) and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) signals. Coexistent SMSE-DSSS designs are addressed under both perfect and imperfect DSSS code tracking conditions using a non-coherent delay-lock loop (DLL). Under both conditions, the number of SMSE subcarriers and subcarrier spacing are the optimization variables of interest. For perfect DLL code tracking conditions, the GA and RSM optimization processes are considered independently with the objective function being end-to-end DSSS bit error rate. A hybrid GA-RSM optimization process is used under more realistic imperfect DLL code tracking conditions. In …

Connectivity And Genetic Structure In Coral Reef Ecosystems: Modeling And Analysis, Johnathan T. Kool Sep 2008

Connectivity And Genetic Structure In Coral Reef Ecosystems: Modeling And Analysis, Johnathan T. Kool

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines aspects of the relationship between connectivity and the development of genetic structure in subdivided coral reef populations using both simulation and algebraic methods. The first chapter develops an object-oriented, individual based method of simulating the dynamics of genes in subdivided populations. The model is then used to investigate how changes to different components of population structure (e.g., connectivity, birth rate, population size) influence genetic structure through the use of autocorrelation analysis. The autocorrelograms also demonstrate how relationships between populations change at different spatial and temporal scales. The second chapter uses discrete multivariate distributions to model the relationship …

On The Classification Of Gradient Ricci Solitons, Peter Petersen, William Wylie Sep 2008

On The Classification Of Gradient Ricci Solitons, Peter Petersen, William Wylie

Mathematics - All Scholarship

We show that the only complete shrinking gradient Ricci solitons with vanishing Weyl tensor are quotients of the standard ones. This gives a new proof of the Hamilton-Ivey-Perel'man classification of 3-dimensional shrinking gradient solitons. We also prove a classification for expanding gradient Ricci solitons with constant scalar curvature and suitably decaying Weyl tensor.

Chemical Analysis Of Five Red Giants In The Globular Cluster M10 (Ngc 6254), Sharina Haynes, Geoffrey Burks, Christian I. Johnson, Catherine A. Pilachowski Sep 2008

Chemical Analysis Of Five Red Giants In The Globular Cluster M10 (Ngc 6254), Sharina Haynes, Geoffrey Burks, Christian I. Johnson, Catherine A. Pilachowski

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have determined Al, α, Fe-peak, and neutron capture elemental abundances for five red-giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster M10. Abundances were determined using equivalent width analyses of moderate-resolution (R ∼ 15,000) spectra obtained with the Hydra multifiber positioner and bench spectrograph on the WIYN telescope. The data sample the upper RGB from the luminosity level near the horizontal branch to about 0.5 mag below the RGB tip. We find, in agreement with previous studies, that M10 is moderately metal-poor with [Fe/H] = -1.45 (σ = 0.04). All stars appear enhanced in Al with 〈[Al/Fe]〉 = +0.33 …

On Gradient Ricci Solitons With Symmetry, Peter Petersen, William Wylie Sep 2008

On Gradient Ricci Solitons With Symmetry, Peter Petersen, William Wylie

Mathematics - All Scholarship

We study gradient Ricci solitons with maximal symmetry. First we show that there are no non-trivial homogeneous gradient Ricci solitons. Thus the most symmetry one can expect is an isometric cohomogeneity one group action. Many examples of cohomogeneity one gradient solitons have been constructed. However, we apply the main result in our paper "Rigidity of gradient Ricci solitons" to show that there are no noncompact cohomogeneity one shrinking gradient solitons with nonnegative curvature.
