PREP Reports & Publications

Increasing nitrogen concentrations and declining eelgrass beds in Great Bay, NH are clear indicators of impending problems for the state’s estuaries. A workgroup established in 2005 by the NH Department of Environmental Services and the NH Estuaries Project (NHEP) adopted eelgrass survival as the water quality target for nutrient criteria development for NH’s estuaries. In 2007, the NHEP received a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to collect water quality information including that from moored sensors and hyper-spectral imagery data of the Great Bay Estuary. Data from the Great Bay Coastal Buoy, part of the regional Integrated Ocean Observing …

Route To Ponderomotive Entanglement Of Light Via Optically Trapped Mirrors, Christopher Wipf, Thomas Corbitt, Yanbei Chen, Nergis Mavalvala Sep 2008

Route To Ponderomotive Entanglement Of Light Via Optically Trapped Mirrors, Christopher Wipf, Thomas Corbitt, Yanbei Chen, Nergis Mavalvala

Faculty Publications

The radiation pressure of two laser beams detuned from resonance in an optical cavity can create a stable optical trap for a mechanical oscillation mode of a movable cavity mirror. Here it is shown that such a configuration entangles the output light fields via interaction with a mirror that is suspended as a pendulum. The degree of entanglement is quantified spectrally using the logarithmic negativity, and related to the available optical restoring force. Entanglement survives in the experimentally accessible regime of gram-scale masses subject to thermal noise at room temperature. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

Computer Aided Diagnosis Of Mammographic Microcalcification Clusters, Maria Kallergi Sep 2008

Computer Aided Diagnosis Of Mammographic Microcalcification Clusters, Maria Kallergi

USF Patents

Computer aided diagnosis techniques in medical imaging are developed for the automated differentiation between benign and malignant lesions and go beyond computer aided detection by providing cancer likelihood for a detected lesion given image and/or patient characteristics. A computer aided detection and diagnosis algorithm for mammographic calcification clusters is developed and evaluated. The emphasis is on the diagnostic component although the algorithm includes automated detection, segmentation, and classification steps based on wavelet filters and artificial neural networks. Classification features are selected primarily from descriptors of the morphology of the individual calcifications and the distribution of the cluster as well as …

Probing The Quantum Coherence Of A Nanomechanical Resonator Using A Superconducting Qubit: Ii. Implementation, M. P. Blencowe, A. D. Armour

Dartmouth Scholarship

We describe a possible implementation of the nanomechanical quantum superposition generation and detection scheme described in the preceding, companion paper (Armour A D and Blencowe M P 2008 New. J. Phys. 10 095004). The implementation is based on the circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) set-up, with the addition of a mechanical degree of freedom formed out of a suspended, doubly-clamped segment of the superconducting loop of a dc SQUID located directly opposite the centre conductor of a coplanar waveguide (CPW). The relative merits of two SQUID based qubit realizations are addressed, in particular a capacitively coupled charge qubit and inductively coupled …

Hand-Held Flyback Driven Coaxial Dielectric Barrier Discharge: Development And Characterization, Victor J. Law, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Neil O’Connor, James F. Lalor, Steven Daniels

Articles

The development of a handheld single and triple chamber atmospheric pressure coaxial dielectric barrier discharge driven by Flyback circuitry for helium and argon discharges is described. The Flyback uses external metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor power switching technology and the transformer operates in the continuous current mode to convert a continuous dc power of 10–33 W to generate a 1.2–1.6 kV 3.5 μs pulse. An argon discharge breakdown voltage of ∼768 V is measured. With a 50 kHz, pulse repetition rate and an argon flow rate of 0.5–10 argon slm (slm denotes standard liters per minute), the electrical power density deposited in …

Probing The Quantum Coherence Of A Nanomechanical Resonator Using A Superconducting Qubit: I. Echo Scheme, A. D. Armour, M. P. Blencowe Sep 2008

Probing The Quantum Coherence Of A Nanomechanical Resonator Using A Superconducting Qubit: I. Echo Scheme, A. D. Armour, M. P. Blencowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

We propose a scheme in which the quantum coherence of a nanomechanical resonator can be probed using a superconducting qubit. We consider a mechanical resonator coupled capacitively to a Cooper pair box and assume that the superconducting qubit is tuned to the degeneracy point so that its coherence time is maximized and the electro-mechanical coupling can be approximated by a dispersive Hamiltonian. When the qubit is prepared in a superposition of states, this drives the mechanical resonator progressively into a superposition which in turn leads to apparent decoherence of the qubit. Applying a suitable control pulse to the qubit allows …

Molecular And Macromolecular Alterations Of Recombinant Adenoviral Vectors Do Not Resolve Changes In Hepatic Drug Metabolism During Infection, Shellie M Callahan, Piyanuch Wonganan, Maria A Croyle

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In this report we test the hypothesis that long-term virus-induced alterations in CYP occur from changes initiated by the virus that may not be related to the immune response. Enzyme activity, protein expression and mRNA of CYP3A2, a correlate of human CYP3A4, and CYP2C11, responsive to inflammatory mediators, were assessed 0.25, 1, 4, and 14 days after administration of several different recombinant adenoviruses at a dose of 5.7 x 1012 virus particles (vp)/kg to male Sprague Dawley rats. Wild type adenovirus, containing all viral genes, suppressed CYP3A2 and 2C11 activity by 37% and 39%, respectively within six hours. Levels fell …

Towards A Fully Nonlinear Cauchy Characteristic Extraction, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton Sep 2008

Towards A Fully Nonlinear Cauchy Characteristic Extraction, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton

Physics Faculty Research

The artificial finite outer boundary present in Cauchy codes introduce two sources of error: The outer boundary condition and waveform extraction at an inner worldtube. The problem of proper boundary condition for a radiating system can be solved only by extension to Ι+ (conformal compactification). Cauchy Characteristic Extraction (CCE) offers a means to avoid these errors.

Word Sense Disambiguation In Biomedical Ontologies With Term Co-Occurrence Analysis And Document Clustering, Bill Andreopoulos, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Michael Schroeder Sep 2008

Word Sense Disambiguation In Biomedical Ontologies With Term Co-Occurrence Analysis And Document Clustering, Bill Andreopoulos, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Michael Schroeder

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

With more and more genomes being sequenced, a lot of effort is devoted to their annotation with terms from controlled vocabularies such as the GeneOntology. Manual annotation based on relevant literature is tedious, but automation of this process is difficult. One particularly challenging problem is word sense disambiguation. Terms such as |development| can refer to developmental biology or to the more general sense. Here, we present two approaches to address this problem by using term co-occurrences and document clustering. To evaluate our method we defined a corpus of 331 documents on development and developmental biology. Term co-occurrence analysis achieves an …

Unified Quantum Convolutional Coding, Mark M. Wilde, Todd A. Brun Sep 2008

Unified Quantum Convolutional Coding, Mark M. Wilde, Todd A. Brun

Faculty Publications

We outline a quantum convolutional coding technique for protecting a stream of classical bits and qubits. Our goal is to provide a framework for designing codes that approach the "grandfather" capacity of an entanglement-assisted quantum channel for sending classical and quantum information simultaneously. Our method incorporates several resources for quantum redundancy: fresh ancilla qubits, entangled bits, and gauge qubits. The use of these diverse resources gives our technique the benefits of both active and passive quantum error correction. We can encode a classical-quantum bit stream with periodic quantum gates because our codes possess a convolutional structure. We end with an …

Sequestration And Ultrasound-Induced Release Of Doxorubicin From Stabilized Pluronic P105 Micelles, John D. Pruitt, William G. Pitt Sep 2008

Sequestration And Ultrasound-Induced Release Of Doxorubicin From Stabilized Pluronic P105 Micelles, John D. Pruitt, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

Controlled drug delivery from micelles requires that the micelles remain stable when diluted below their critical micelle concentration, such as upon injection into blood. A cross-linked, interpenetrating network of N,N-diethylacrylamide (NNDEA) was polymerized in the core of Pluronic P105 micelles to stabilize temporarily the micelles at concentrations below the critical micellar concentration of free P105. The stabilized Pluronic micelles (called Plurogels) were able to sequester the drug doxorubicin (Dox) and protect HL-60 cells from the drug at concentrations where non-stabilized Pluronic provided no protection. The protection lasted ~ 12 hr, which is similar to the half-life of the particles. Application …

Autonomous And Intelligent Radio Switching For Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, Qiuyi Duan, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang, Daniel Zappala Sep 2008

Autonomous And Intelligent Radio Switching For Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, Qiuyi Duan, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

As wireless devices continue to become more prevalent, heterogeneous wireless networks - in which communicating devices have at their disposal multiple types of radios - will become the norm. Communication between nodes in these networks ought to be as simple as possible; they should be able to seamlessly switch between different radios and network stacks on the fly in order to better serve the user. To make this a possibility, we consider the challenging problems of when two communicating devices should decide to switch to a different radio, and which radio they should choose. We design an Autonomous and Intelligent …

Hydrological Impact Of The Potential Future Vegetation Response To Climate Changes Projected By 8 Gcms, Clement Alo, Guiling Wang Sep 2008

Hydrological Impact Of The Potential Future Vegetation Response To Climate Changes Projected By 8 Gcms, Clement Alo, Guiling Wang

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study uses offline simulations with a land surface model to explore how the future response of potential vegetation to elevated CO2 and attendant climate changes feeds back to influence surface hydrological processes. Climate changes are those projected by eight General Circulation Models (GCMs) under the SRESAlB, and the potential natural vegetation structure corresponding to the Preindustrial control and SRESAlB 2100 climate of the 8 GCMs are simulated by a dynamic global vegetation model integrated to equilibrium. For climate change forcing from each GCM, comparisons are made among three surface hydrology simulations using CLM3.0 driven with different combinations of climate …

Applications Of Combinatorial Designs In Key Pre-Distribution In Sensor Networks., Dibyendu Chakrabarti Dr. Sep 2008

Applications Of Combinatorial Designs In Key Pre-Distribution In Sensor Networks., Dibyendu Chakrabarti Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Key pre-distribution is an important area of research in Distributed Sensor Networks (DSN). Some improved techniques over the existing schemes (employing combinatorial designs) have been proposed in this thesis and detailed mathematical analysis of the schemes has been presented. At first, combinatorial design followed by randomized merging strategy is applied to key pre-distribution in sensor nodes. Our main target is to get more than one pair of common keys between any pair of nodes to provide a robust network in terms of security under adversarial conditions where some nodes may get compromised. A transversal design is used to construct a …
