Conformal Maps And Orthogonal Polynomials For Planar Regions With Analytic Boundaries, Part Ii, Erwin Miña-Díaz Sep 2008

Conformal Maps And Orthogonal Polynomials For Planar Regions With Analytic Boundaries, Part Ii, Erwin Miña-Díaz

Analysis Seminar

For an arbitrary analytic Jordan curve in the complex plane, whose interior domain is denoted by , we shall look at the sequence of polynomials ₙ(), = 0,1,2,... (ₙ of exact degree ) that are orthonormal over with respect to area measure, that is, ∫₉ ₙ()ₘ() d() = 0 if ≠ and 1 if = , where d is the two-dimensional Lebesgue (area) measure. Specifically, we want to understand how these polynomials and their zeros behave as → ∞. We shall give a quite complete and satisfactory answer to this question, which required …

Influence Of Pocket Gopher Mounds On Nonnative Plant Establishment In A Shrubsteppe Ecosystem, G. Page Kyle, Andrew Kulmatiski, Karen H. Beard

Western North American Naturalist

Soil disturbances across a wide range of spatial scales have been found to promote the establishment of invasive plant species. This study addresses whether mounds built by northern pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides) in the shrubsteppe environment of north central Washington are facilitating plant invasions into native-dominated fields. Research was conducted in native-dominated plant communities adjacent to ex-arable, nonnative-dominated fields. To determine the effect of mounds on plant growth, we recorded new establishment and persistence of all plant species over 2 growing seasons on 10–19 mound and intermound areas in 10 fields. Nonnative plant establishment was not affected by …

Generalized Multilevel Functional Regression, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Ana-Maria Staicu, Chongzhi Di Sep 2008

Generalized Multilevel Functional Regression, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Ana-Maria Staicu, Chongzhi Di

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We introduce Generalized Multilevel Functional Linear Models (GMFLM), a novel statistical framework motivated by and applied to the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS), the largest community cohort study of sleep. The primary goal of SHHS is to study the association between sleep disrupted breathing (SDB) and adverse health effects. An exposure of primary interest is the sleep electroencephalogram (EEG), which was observed for thousands of individuals at two visits, roughly 5 years apart. This unique study design led to the development of models where the outcome, e.g. hypertension, is in an exponential family and the exposure, e.g. sleep EEG, is …

On A New Process For Cusp Irregularity Production, Herbert C. Carlson, K. Oksavik, J. Moen Sep 2008

On A New Process For Cusp Irregularity Production, Herbert C. Carlson, K. Oksavik, J. Moen

Faculty publications

Two plasma instability mechanisms were thought until 2007 to dominate the formation of plasma irregularities in the F region high latitude and polar ionosphere; the gradient-drift driven instability, and the velocity-shear driven instability. The former mechanism was accepted as accounting for plasma structuring in polar cap patches, the latter for plasma structuring in polar cap sun aligned arcs. Recent work has established the need to replace this view of the past two decades with a new patch plasma structuring process (not a new mechanism), whereby shear-driven instabilities first rapidly structure the entering plasma, after which gradient drift instabilities build on …

Limitations Of Remotely-Sensed Aerosol As A Spatial Proxy For Fine Particulate Matter, Christopher J. Paciorek, Yang Liu Sep 2008

Limitations Of Remotely-Sensed Aerosol As A Spatial Proxy For Fine Particulate Matter, Christopher J. Paciorek, Yang Liu

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Recent research highlights the promise of remotely-sensed aerosol optical depth (AOD) as a proxy for ground-level PM2.5. Particular interest lies in the information on spatial heterogeneity potentially provided by AOD, with important application to estimating and monitoring pollution exposure for public health purposes. Given the temporal and spatio-temporal correlations reported between AOD and PM2.5 , it is tempting to interpret the spatial patterns in AOD as reflecting patterns in PM2.5 . Here we find only limited spatial associations of AOD from three satellite retrievals with PM2.5 over the eastern U.S. at the daily and yearly levels in 2004. We then …

Constant-Sign Solutions Of A System Of Volterra Integral Equations In Orlicz Spaces, Ravi P. Agarwal, Donal O'Regan, Patricia J.Y. Wong Sep 2008

Constant-Sign Solutions Of A System Of Volterra Integral Equations In Orlicz Spaces, Ravi P. Agarwal, Donal O'Regan, Patricia J.Y. Wong

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider the following system of Volterra intergral equations uu1(t) = gi(t, s)fi(s, u1(s), u2(s), · · ·, un(s))ds, a.e. t ∈ [0,T], 1 ≤ i ≤ n. Criteria are offered for the existence of one and more constantsign solutions u = (u1, u2, · · ·, un) of the system in Lp and the Orlicz spaces. We say u is of constant sign if for each 1 ≤ i ≤ n, Θiui(t) ≥ 0 for a.e. t ∈ [0,T], where Θi ∈ {1,-1} is fixed. © 2008 Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium.

Development Of A Workflow For The Comparison Of Classification Techniques, Zanifa Omary Sep 2008

Development Of A Workflow For The Comparison Of Classification Techniques, Zanifa Omary

Masters

As the interest in machine learning and data mining springs up, the problem of how to assess learning algorithms and compare classifiers become more pressing. This has been associated with the lack of comprehensive and complete workflow depending on the project scale to provide guidance to its users. This means the success or failure of the project can be highly dependent on the person or team carrying it. The standard practice adopted by many researchers and experimenters has been to follow steps or phases from existing workflows such as CRISP-DM, KDD and SASSEMMA. However, as machine learning and data mining …

Variable Selection In Competing Risks Using The L1-Penalized Cox Model, Xiangrong Kong Sep 2008

Variable Selection In Competing Risks Using The L1-Penalized Cox Model, Xiangrong Kong

Theses and Dissertations

One situation in survival analysis is that the failure of an individual can happen because of one of multiple distinct causes. Survival data generated in this scenario are commonly referred to as competing risks data. One of the major tasks, when examining survival data, is to assess the dependence of survival time on explanatory variables. In competing risks, as with ordinary univariate survival data, there may be explanatory variables associated with the risks raised from the different causes being studied. The same variable might have different degrees of influence on the risks due to different causes. Given a set of …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Photometry with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST ACS) reveals that the subgiant branch (SGB) of the globular cluster NGC 1851 splits into two well-defined branches. If the split is due only to an age effect, the two SGBs would imply two star formation episodes separated by ~1 Gyr. We discuss other anomalies in NGC 1851 that could be interpreted in terms of a double stellar population. Finally, we compare the case of NGC 1851 with the other two globulars known to host multiple stellar populations, and show that all three clusters differ in several important …

Implementing Continuation Marks In Javascript, John Clements, Ayswarya Sundaram, David Herman Sep 2008

Implementing Continuation Marks In Javascript, John Clements, Ayswarya Sundaram, David Herman

Computer Science and Software Engineering

MzScheme’s continuation marks provide a flexible mechanism for implementing a number of useful language features and tools. We demonstrate the simplicity and utility of continuation marks by adapting them for JavaScript as frame-based stack marks using the Rhino implementation, showing a simple model of their behavior, and using them to build a toy debugger. Along the way, we discover a few interesting things. First, it requires some thinking—but not much code—to add continuation marks to JavaScript. Second, coupling tail-calling with the “return” of statement-based languages leads to some interesting problems in formulating a semantics. Third, building a debugger based on …

Time-Resolved Au-Scale Jets Traced By Masers In The Iras 4a/B Regions Of Ngc 1333, Bruce Wilking, Kevin Marvel, Mark Claussen, Alwyn Wootten

Physics Faculty Works

We present results of VLBI observations of the water masers associated with IRAS 4A and IRAS 4B in the NGC 1333 star-forming region taken in four epochs over a two month period. Both objects have been classified as extremely young sources, and each source is known to be a multiple system. Using the Very Long Baseline Array, we detected 35 masers in epoch I, 40 masers in epoch II, 35 in epoch III, and 24 in epoch IV. Only one identified source in each system is associated with these masers. These data are used to calculate proper motions for the …

Publications

We report on multiwavelength observations, ranging from X-ray to radio wave bands, of the IPN-localized gamma-ray burst GRB 070125. Spectroscopic observations reveal the presence of absorption lines due to O i,Si ii,and C iv, implying a likely redshift of z ¼1:547. The well-sampled light curves, in particular from 0.5 to 4 days after the burst, suggest a jet break at 3.7 days, corresponding to a jet opening angle of $7.0, and implying an intrinsic GRB energy in the 1Y10,000 keV band of around E ¼(6:3Y6:9) ; 1051 ergs (based on the fluences measured by the gamma-ray de-tectorsof the IPN).GRB070125 is …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

According to unified schemes of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the central engine is surrounded by dusty, optically thick clouds in a toroidal structure. We have recently developed a formalism that for the first time takes proper account of the clumpy nature of the AGN torus. We now provide a detailed report of our findings in a two-paper series. Here we present our general formalism for radiative transfer in clumpy media and construct its building blocks for the AGN problem-the source functions of individual dusty clouds heated by the AGN radiation field. We show that a fundamental difference from smooth density …

The Orbital Period And Time-Variable Asymmetric Accretion Disk In The X-Ray Binary-Ms 1603.6+2600 (=Uw Coronae Borealis), Paul A. Mason, Edward L. Robinson, Candace L. Gray, Robert I. Hynes Sep 2008

The Orbital Period And Time-Variable Asymmetric Accretion Disk In The X-Ray Binary-Ms 1603.6+2600 (=Uw Coronae Borealis), Paul A. Mason, Edward L. Robinson, Candace L. Gray, Robert I. Hynes

Faculty Publications

We present CCD photometry of the low-mass X-ray binary UW Coronae Borealis (UW CrB). Its light curve shows eclipses at a period near 111 minutes, but the eclipses vary in depth and shape and often disappear. Restricting our analysis to the deeper eclipses, we find the orbital period to be 110.976722 ± 0.000012 minutes, but the times of mideclipse can deviate by more than 0.025 in phase from the best-fit ephemeris. There is an additional large-amplitude variation with a period of 112.58 ± 0.03 minutes reminiscent of the superhumps seen in the light curves of some cataclysmic variables. The variations …
