Modeling Video Hyperlinks With Hypergraph For Web Video Reranking, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Xiao Wu Oct 2008

Modeling Video Hyperlinks With Hypergraph For Web Video Reranking, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Xiao Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate a novel approach of exploiting visual-duplicates for web video reranking using hypergraph. Current graph-based reranking approaches consider mainly the pair-wise linking of keyframes and ignore reliability issues that are inherent in such representation. We exploit higher order relation to overcome the issues of missing links in visual-duplicate keyframes and in addition identify the latent relationships among keyframes. Based on hypergraph, we consider two groups of video threads: visual near-duplicate threads and story threads, to hyperlink web videos and describe the higher order information existing in video content. To facilitate reranking using random walk algorithm, the …

Remote Attestation On Program Execution, Liang Gu, Xuhua Ding, Robert H. Deng, Bing Xie, Hong Mei Oct 2008

Remote Attestation On Program Execution, Liang Gu, Xuhua Ding, Robert H. Deng, Bing Xie, Hong Mei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Remote attestation provides the basis for one platform to establish trusts on another. In this paper, we consider the problem of attesting the correctness of program executions. We propose to measure the target program and all the objects it depends on, with an assumption that the Secure Kernel and the Trusted Platform Module provide a secure execution environment through process separation. The attestation of the target program begins with a program analysis on the source code or the binary code in order to find out the relevant executables and data objects. Whenever such a data object is accessed or a …

Event Detection With Common User Interests, Meishan Hu, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim Oct 2008

Event Detection With Common User Interests, Meishan Hu, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we aim at detecting events of common user interests from huge volume of user-generated content. The degree of interest from common users in an event is evidenced by a significant surge of event-related queries issued to search for documents (e.g., news articles, blog posts) relevant to the event. Taking the stream of queries from users and the stream of documents as input, our proposed framework seamlessly integrates the two streams into a single stream of query profiles. A query profile is a set of documents matching a query at a given time. With the single stream of …

Using Trusted Computing Technology To Facilitate Security Enforcement In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao, Jianying Zhou Oct 2008

Using Trusted Computing Technology To Facilitate Security Enforcement In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao, Jianying Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Security enforcement in wireless sensor networks is by no means an easy task, due to the inherent resource-constrained nature of sensor nodes. To facilitate security enforcement, we propose to incorporate more powerful high-end Security Enforcement Facilitators (SEFs) into wireless sensor networks. In particular, the SEFs are equipped with TCG-compliant Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs) to protect cryptographic secrets, perform authenticated booting and attest their platform state to a remote base station. As such, the SEFs act as online trusted third parties toeffectively monitor the states of sensor nodes, help in keymanagement, simplify secure routing, and facilitate accesscontrol.

Specification Mining Of Symbolic Scenario-Based Models, David Lo, Shahar Maoz Oct 2008

Specification Mining Of Symbolic Scenario-Based Models, David Lo, Shahar Maoz

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many dynamic analysis approaches to specification mining, which extract behavioral models from execution traces, do not consider object identities. This limits their power when used to analyze traces of general object oriented programs. In this work we present a novel specification mining approach that considers object identities, and, moreover, generalizes from specifications involving concrete objects to their symbolic class-level abstractions. Our approach uses data mining methods to extract significant scenario-based specifications in the form of Damm and Harel's live sequence charts (LSC), a formal and expressive extension of classic sequence diagrams. We guarantee that all mined symbolic LSCs are significant …

Resource-Aware Video Multicasting Via Access Gateways In Wireless Mesh Networks, Wanqing Tu, Cormac J. Sreenan, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra Oct 2008

Resource-Aware Video Multicasting Via Access Gateways In Wireless Mesh Networks, Wanqing Tu, Cormac J. Sreenan, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper studies video multicasting in large scale areas using wireless mesh networks. The focus is on the use of Internet access gateways that allow a choice of alternative routes to avoid potentially lengthy multi-hop wireless paths with low capacity. A set of heuristic-based algorithms are described that together aim to maximize network capacity: the two-tier integrated architecture algorithm, the weighted gateway uploading algorithm, the link-controlled routing tree algorithm, and the alternative channel assignment algorithm. These algorithms use different approaches to arrange multicast group members into a clustered and two-tier integrated architecture in which network protocols can make use of …

Understanding Evolution In Technology Ecosystems, Gediminas Adomavicius, Jesse Bockstedt, Alok Gupta, Robert J. Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The current environment of information technology can be a complex place for analysts and firms to navigate, especially when making decisions about new product development, technology investment, and technology planning. Many industry analysts recognize that it is difficult, if not impossible, to accurately predict future technological advances. However, successful firms need to understand the nature of technological change and evolution in order to accurately forecast and take advantage of investment and market opportunities. For example, although RFID has been in the news for the past decade as the potential distribution and retail "killer technology", uncertainties about its future technical capabilities, …

Near-Duplicate Keyframe Retrieval By Nonrigid Image Matching, Jianke Zhu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu, Shuicheng Yan Oct 2008

Near-Duplicate Keyframe Retrieval By Nonrigid Image Matching, Jianke Zhu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu, Shuicheng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Near-duplicate image retrieval plays an important role in many real-world multimedia applications. Most previous approaches have some limitations. For example, conventional appearance-based methods may suffer from the illumination variations and occlusion issue, and local feature correspondence-based methods often do not consider local deformations and the spatial coherence between two point sets. In this paper, we propose a novel and effective Nonrigid Image Matching (NIM) approach to tackle the task of near-duplicate keyframe retrieval from real-world video corpora. In contrast to previous approaches, the NIM technique can recover an explicit mapping between two near-duplicate images with a few deformation parameters and …

Parameter Estimation Of The Arterial System, James Charles Carter Ii Oct 2008

Parameter Estimation Of The Arterial System, James Charles Carter Ii

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There are a number of disorders that originate from or involve faulty operation of the cardiovascular system. Diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and hypertension can have a debilitating effect on blood flow. This makes the tools for simulating the effects of such diseases on blood flow important. Measures, such as pulse wave velocity, that are generated by models of the cardiovascular system can be important indicators of cardiac health. Although physically measurable, obtaining some parameters comes with a high cost and discomfort to the patient. Models can provide an assessment of many important parameters. The purpose of this project was …

Modeling And Stability Analysis Of Nonlinear Sampled-Data Systems With Embedded Recovery Algorithms, Heber Herencia-Zapana Oct 2008

Modeling And Stability Analysis Of Nonlinear Sampled-Data Systems With Embedded Recovery Algorithms, Heber Herencia-Zapana

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computer control systems for safety critical systems are designed to be fault tolerant and reliable, however, soft errors triggered by harsh environments can affect the performance of these control systems. The soft errors of interest which occur randomly, are nondestructive and introduce a failure that lasts a random duration. To minimize the effect of these errors, safety critical systems with error recovery mechanisms are being investigated. The main goals of this dissertation are to develop modeling and analysis tools for sampled-data control systems that are implemented with such error recovery mechanisms. First, the mathematical model and the well-posedness of the …

Simulation Based Six-Sigma Design For Service Industry, Shantanu Dhananjay Ghate

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The main purpose of this thesis was to develop the dental clinic design using six-sigma principles. Simulation software called Process ModelTM was used to build a primary layout of the clinic. Once the basic design was built, statistical analysis method like D.O.E (design of experiment) was used to generate the data based on different combinations of design parameters viz. number of hygienists, number of x-ray machines and waiting room capacity. These data were further analyzed using Contrast-Effect method, ANOVA and Regression Analysis. In order to incorporate the impact of random factors, Taguchi's methodology was applied. This lead to the …

Using Timed-Release Cryptography To Mitigate Preservation Risk Of Embargo Periods, Rabia Haq Oct 2008

Using Timed-Release Cryptography To Mitigate Preservation Risk Of Embargo Periods, Rabia Haq

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

This research defines Time-Locked Embargo, a framework designed to mitigate the Preservation Risk Interval: the preservation risk associated with embargoed scholarly material. Due to temporary access restrictions, embargoed data cannot be distributed freely and thus preserved via data refreshing during the embargo time interval. A solution to mitigate the risk of data loss has been developed by suggesting a data dissemination framework that allows data refreshing of encrypted instances of embargoed content in an open, unrestricted scholarly community. This framework has been developed by exploiting implementations of existing technologies to"time-lock" data using Timed-Release Cryptology (TRC) so that it can be …

Representative Entry Selection For Profiling Blogs, Jinfeng Zhuang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Aixin Sun, Rong Jin Oct 2008

Representative Entry Selection For Profiling Blogs, Jinfeng Zhuang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Aixin Sun, Rong Jin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many applications on blog search and mining often meet the challenge of handling huge volume of blog data, in which one single blog could contain hundreds or even thousands of entries. We investigate novel techniques for profiling blogs by selecting a subset of representative entries for each blog. We propose two principles for guiding the entry selection task: representativeness and diversity. Further, we formulate the entry selection task into a combinatorial optimization problem and propose a greedy yet effective algorithm for finding a good approximate solution by exploiting the theory of submodular functions. We suggest blog classification for judging the …

Output Regularized Metric Learning With Side Information, Wei Liu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Jianzhuang Liu Oct 2008

Output Regularized Metric Learning With Side Information, Wei Liu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Jianzhuang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distance metric learning has been widely investigated in machine learning and information retrieval. In this paper, we study a particular content-based image retrieval application of learning distance metrics from historical relevance feedback log data, which leads to a novel scenario called collaborative image retrieval. The log data provide the side information expressed as relevance judgements between image pairs. Exploiting the side information as well as inherent neighborhood structures among examples, we design a convex regularizer upon which a novel distance metric learning approach, named output regularized metric learning, is presented to tackle collaborative image retrieval. Different from previous distance metric …

An Effective Approach To 3d Deformable Surface Tracking, Jianke Zhu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Zenglin Xu, Michael R. Lyu Oct 2008

An Effective Approach To 3d Deformable Surface Tracking, Jianke Zhu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Zenglin Xu, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The key challenge with 3D deformable surface tracking arises from the difficulty in estimating a large number of 3D shape parameters from noisy observations. A recent state-of-the-art approach attacks this problem by formulating it as a Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) feasibility problem. The main drawback of this solution is the high computational cost. In this paper, we first reformulate the problem into an unconstrained quadratic optimization problem. Instead of handling a large set of complicated SOCP constraints, our new formulation can be solved very efficiently by resolving a set of sparse linear equations. Based on the new framework, a …

Pursuing The Peak Of Excellence: Wiki As A Knowledge Base, Rebecca Klein, Matthew Smith

Information Technology Faculty and Staff Publications

The pursuit of excellent communication is a path not easily navigated. Challenges arise at every turn, and the greatest obstacle of all is ensuring availability and accuracy of information. Help Desk representatives are the first point of contact for customers placing technology requests and they must have a broad range of knowledge about services provided by the department. A large amount of time is spent in training staff members to achieve the desired level of expertise. At Valparaiso University these staff members are students, adding to the complexity of information sharing as these staff members are only employed for a …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The Instructional Methods Used With A Student Response System At A Large University, Charles R. Graham, Larry Seawright, Coral Marie Hanson Oct 2008

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The Instructional Methods Used With A Student Response System At A Large University, Charles R. Graham, Larry Seawright, Coral Marie Hanson

Faculty Publications

This study investigates the adoption of student response systems (SRS) across a large university campus. The study sought to understand how faculty members were using the SRS and what instructional strategies student and faculty found to be most valuable to their learning. The term "helpful" and the concept of "helpfulness" is used in place of "valuable" as it more clearly communicates to students and faculty the concept of how an SRS is of worth to them. Students were generally positive about the helpfulness of the instructional methods professors were using. Students found the ability to receive immediate feedback on their …

Theory And Application Of Motion Compensation For Lfm-Cw Sar, David G. Long, Evan C. Zaugg Oct 2008

Theory And Application Of Motion Compensation For Lfm-Cw Sar, David G. Long, Evan C. Zaugg

Faculty Publications

Small low-cost high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are made possible by using a linear frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFM-CW) signal. SAR processing assumes that the sensor is moving in a straight line at a constant speed, but in actuality, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or airplane will often significantly deviate from this ideal. This nonideal motion can seriously degrade the SAR image quality. In a continuous-wave system, this motion happens during the radar pulse, which means that existing motion compensation techniques that approximate the position as constant over a pulse are limited for LFM-CW SAR. Small aircraft and UAVs are particularly …

Enhancement Of Unusual Color In Aerial Video Sequences For Assisting Wilderness Search And Rescue, Bryan S. Morse, Nathan D. Rasmussen, Daniel Thornton Oct 2008

Enhancement Of Unusual Color In Aerial Video Sequences For Assisting Wilderness Search And Rescue, Bryan S. Morse, Nathan D. Rasmussen, Daniel Thornton

Faculty Publications

The use of aerial video for search and surveillance has been popularized by the increased use of camera-equipped unmanned aerial vehicles. For many search applications, objects may also be missed by observers due to their small size, brief visibility, or the inherent monotony of the scene. This paper presents a novel method for automatically emphasizing unusually colored objects to improve their detectability. We use a hue histogram and a local saliency measure to find unusually colored objects, then boost the saturation of these objects while desaturating more common colors, thus drawing the observer’s attention and facilitating video search.

Hop-By-Hop Multicast Transport For Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Manoj Pandey, Daniel Zappala Oct 2008

Hop-By-Hop Multicast Transport For Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Manoj Pandey, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

Multicast transport is a challenging problem because the source must provide congestion control and reliability for a tree, rather than a single path. This problem is made even more difficult in mobile ad hoc networks due to problems caused by contention, spatial reuse, and mobility. In this paper, we design a hop-by-hop multicast transport protocol, which pushes transport functionality into the core of the network. Although this requires per-flow state, a hop-by-hop approach simplifies congestion control, enables local recovery of lost packets, and provides low delay and efficient use of wireless capacity. We use a simulation study to demonstrate the …

Scalable Multicast Routing For Ad Hoc Networks, Manoj Pandey, Daniel Zappala Oct 2008

Scalable Multicast Routing For Ad Hoc Networks, Manoj Pandey, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

Routing in a mobile ad hoc network is challenging because nodes can move at any time, invalidating a previously-discovered route. Multicast routing is even more challenging, because a source needs to maintain a route to potentially many group members simultaneously. Providing scalable solutions to this problem typically requires building a hierarchy or an overlay network to reduce the cost of route discovery and maintenance. In this paper, we show that a much simpler alternative is possible, by using source specific semantics and relying on the unicast routing protocol to find all routes. This separation of concerns enables the multicast routing …

Pulsar Timing As A Probe Of Non-Einsteinlan Polarizations Of Gravitational Waves, K. J. Lee, F. A. Jenet, Richard H. Price Oct 2008

Pulsar Timing As A Probe Of Non-Einsteinlan Polarizations Of Gravitational Waves, K. J. Lee, F. A. Jenet, Richard H. Price

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Einstein's theory of gravity predicts waves of the distortion of spacetime with two degrees of polarization; alternative theories predict more polarizations, up to a maximum of six. Although laser interferometric gravity wave detectors can be used to search for at least some of the non-Einsteinian polarizations, their configuration is not optimal for the task. By contrast, the angular distribution of pulsars in the sky makes pulsar timing a flexible tool for detecting all polarizations. We give here an analysis of the sensitivity of pulsar timing to an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background of waves with non-Einsteinian polarizations and conclude that …

Adaptive And Probabilistic Power Control Algorithms For Rfid Reader Networks, Kainan Cha, Anil Ramachandran, Jagannathan Sarangapani Oct 2008

Adaptive And Probabilistic Power Control Algorithms For Rfid Reader Networks, Kainan Cha, Anil Ramachandran, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, the detection range and read rates will suffer from interference among high power reading devices. This problem grows severely and degrades system performance in dense RFID networks. Consequently, medium access protocols (MAC) protocols are needed for such networks to assess and provide access to the channel so that tags can be read accurately. In this paper, we investigate a suite of feasible power control schemes to ensure overall coverage area of the system while maintaining a desired read rate. The power control scheme and MAC protocol dynamically adjusts the RFID reader power output in …

Prediction Of Effective Permittivity Of Diphasic Dielectrics Using An Equivalent Capacitance Model, Sandeep K. Patil, Marina Koledintseva, Robert W. Schwartz, Wayne Huebner Oct 2008

Prediction Of Effective Permittivity Of Diphasic Dielectrics Using An Equivalent Capacitance Model, Sandeep K. Patil, Marina Koledintseva, Robert W. Schwartz, Wayne Huebner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analytical model based on an equivalent capacitance circuit for expressing a static effective permittivity of a composite dielectric with complex-shaped inclusions is presented. The dielectric constant of 0-3 composites is investigated using this model. The geometry of the capacitor containing a composite dielectric is discretized into partial parallel-plate capacitor elements, and the effective permittivity of the composite is obtained from the equivalent capacitance of the structure. First, an individual cell diphasic dielectric (a high-permittivity spherical inclusion enclosed in a lower permittivity parallelepiped) is considered. The capacitance of this cell is modeled as a function of an inclusion radius/volume fraction. …

Historic And Recent Distributions Of Elk In Nebraska, Kent A. Fricke, Michael A. Cover, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Hugh H. Genoways, Scott R. Groepper, Kit Hams, Kurt C. Vercauteren Oct 2008

Historic And Recent Distributions Of Elk In Nebraska, Kent A. Fricke, Michael A. Cover, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Hugh H. Genoways, Scott R. Groepper, Kit Hams, Kurt C. Vercauteren

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Elk (Cervus elaphus) were historically found throughout North America but were extirpated from Nebraska and much of the Great Plains in the 1880s due to consumptive uses by settlers, miners, market hunters, and others. Elk began to reappear in Nebraska in the 1950s and 1960s, and established a stable, nonmigratory population that currently consists of seven herds and an estimated 1,400 individuals throughout western and central Nebraska. The reappearance and subsequent persistence of elk in Nebraska suggests there is adequate habitat to support a self-sustaining population. The general movement of elk eastward may lead to an eventual statewide …

Window Queries Over Data Streams, Jin Li Oct 2008

Window Queries Over Data Streams, Jin Li

Dissertations and Theses

Evaluating queries over data streams has become an appealing way to support various stream-processing applications. Window queries are commonly used in many stream applications. In a window query, certain query operators, especially blocking operators and stateful operators, appear in their windowed versions. Previous research work in evaluating window queries typically requires ordered streams and this order requirement limits the implementations of window operators and also carries performance penalties. This thesis presents efficient and flexible algorithms for evaluating window queries. We first present a new data model for streams, progressing streams, that separates stream progress from physical-arrival order. Then, we …

New Power Quality Index In A Distribution Power System By Using Rmp Model, Soon Lee, Jung-Wook Park, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Oct 2008

New Power Quality Index In A Distribution Power System By Using Rmp Model, Soon Lee, Jung-Wook Park, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a new power quality index (PQI), which is directly related to the generation of distortion power from nonlinear harmonic loads, is introduced to determine their harmonic pollution ranking in a distribution power system. The electric load composition rate (LCR) and the total harmonic distortion (THD) for the estimated currents on each harmonic load are used to define the proposed PQI. The reduced multivariate polynomial (RMP) model with one-shot training property is applied to realize the PQI. Then, the ranking of distortion power for each nonlinear load, which have adverse effect on the entire system, is determined. It …

Joint Adaptive Distributed Rate And Power Control For Wireless Networks, James W. Fonda, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Steve Eugene Watkins Oct 2008

Joint Adaptive Distributed Rate And Power Control For Wireless Networks, James W. Fonda, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel adaptive distributed rate and power control (ADRPC) protocol is introduced for wireless networks. The proposed controller contrasts from others by providing nonlinear compensation to the problem of transmission power and bit-rate adaptation. The protocol provides control of both signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) and quality-of-service (QoS) support to bit-rate adaptation. Bit-rate adaptation is performed by local estimation of congestion levels, rendering little packet overhead, using Lyapunov based adaptive control methods. Performance of the proposed control scheme is shown through analytical proof and simulation examples.
