Motion On Upper-Plate Faults During Subduction Zone Earthquakes: Case Of The Atacama Fault System, Northern Chile, John P. Loveless, Matthew E. Pritchard Dec 2008

Motion On Upper-Plate Faults During Subduction Zone Earthquakes: Case Of The Atacama Fault System, Northern Chile, John P. Loveless, Matthew E. Pritchard

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Motion on the Atacama Fault System (AFS) in northern Chile is driven by Andean subduction zone processes. We use two approaches, observational and theoretical, to evaluate how the AFS and other forearc faults responded to coseismic stress induced by one well-studied megathrust earthquake, the 1995 Mw = 8.1 Antofagasta event. We use synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) to search for small-scale coseismic and postseismic deformation on individual faults. The InSAR data are ambiguous: some images show offset consistent with coseismic faulting on the Paposo segment of the AFS and others lack such signal. The fact that we do not …

Unfolding Convex Polyhedra Via Quasigeodesic Star Unfoldings, Jin-Ichi Itoh, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu Dec 2008

Unfolding Convex Polyhedra Via Quasigeodesic Star Unfoldings, Jin-Ichi Itoh, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We extend the notion of a star unfolding to be based on a simple quasigeodesic loop Q rather than on a point. This gives a new general method to unfold the surface of any convex polyhedron P to a simple, planar polygon: shortest paths from all vertices of P to Q are cut, and all but one segment of Q is cut.

Analyzing Rigidity With Pebble Games, Audrey Lee, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran Dec 2008

Analyzing Rigidity With Pebble Games, Audrey Lee, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

How many pair-wise distances must be prescribed between an unknown set of points, and how should they be distributed, to determine only a discrete set of possible solutions? These questions, and related generalizations, are central in a variety of applications. Combinatorial rigidity shows that in two-dimensions one can get the answer, generically, via an efficiently testable sparse graph property. We present a video and a web site illustrating algorithmic results for a variety of rigidity-related problems, as well as abstract generalizations. Our accompanying interactive software is based on a comprehensive implementation of the pebble game paradigm.

Combinatorial Genericity And Minimal Rigidity, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran Dec 2008

Combinatorial Genericity And Minimal Rigidity, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

A well studied geometric problem, with applications ranging from molecular structure determination to sensor networks, asks for the reconstruction of a set P of n unknown points from a finite set of pairwise distances (up to Euclidean isometries). We are concerned here with a related problem: which sets of distances are minimal with the property that they allow for the reconstruction of P, up to a finite set of possibilities? In the planar case, the answer is known generically via the landmark Maxwell-Laman Theorem from Rigidity Theory, and it leads to a combinatorial answer: the underlying structure of such a …

Measurement Of BS0 Mixing Parameters From The Flavor-Tagged Decay BS0 → J/Ψφ, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration Dec 2008

Measurement Of BS0 Mixing Parameters From The Flavor-Tagged Decay BS0 → J/Ψφ, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

From an analysis of the flavor-tagged decay Bs0 → J/ ψφ we obtain the width difference between the Bs0 light and heavy mass eigenstates, ΔΓs = 0.19 ± 0.07 (stat)-0.01+0.02 (syst) ps-1, and the CP-violating phase, φs = -0.57-0.30+0.24(stat)-0.02+0.08(syst). The allowed 90% CL intervals of ΔΓs and φs are 0.06 < ΔΓs < 0.30 ps-1 and -1.20< φs < 0.06, respectively. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.8 fb-1 accumulated with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider.

Naturalism In The Philosophies Of Dewey And Zhuangzi: The Live Creature And The Crooked Tree, Christopher C. Kirby Dec 2008

Naturalism In The Philosophies Of Dewey And Zhuangzi: The Live Creature And The Crooked Tree, Christopher C. Kirby

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation will compare the concept of nature as it appears in the philosophies of the American pragmatist John Dewey and the Chinese daoist Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu) and will defend two central claims. The first of these is that Dewey and Zhuangzi share a view of nature that is non-reductive, philosophically liberal, and more comprehensive than the accounts recurrent in much of the Western tradition. This alternate conception of nature is non-reductive in the way that it avoids the physically mechanistic outlook underwriting much of contemporary Anglo-American thought. It is philosophically liberal in that it accepts a more generous and …

Sharing The Power Of Words And Changing Lives Through College-Level Instruction In Grammar And Mechanics, Carol Ann Tillema Dec 2008

Sharing The Power Of Words And Changing Lives Through College-Level Instruction In Grammar And Mechanics, Carol Ann Tillema

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Intrigued by the English language and its far-reaching applications worldwide as a standard means of communication, I begin my disquisition with a focus on the meaning and derivation of grammar and its place in the trivium of ancient and modern study. I stress the need to reemphasize college-level instruction in grammar and mechanics as a complement to rhetoric and logic by studying and teaching editing, which involves semantics, syntax, phonology, morphology, conventions, mechanics (spelling, punctuation and format), in writing centers and classrooms. Noting growing nationwide illiteracy, I research the pedagogies and writing of experts in the field of rhetoric and …

Evolving Regional Frameworks for Ag-to-Urban Water Transfers (December 11)

The permanent transfer of water from agricultural users to municipalities has become a common feature of water management in several western states. In many cases, these voluntary market‐based transfers provide significant benefits to both the buyers and sellers, but many third parties—including remaining irrigators, rural businesses and communities dependent upon agricultural economies—have been negatively impacted. While some impacts of these so‐called “buy and dry” transfers are largely unavoidable, many can be lessened by temporary arrangements that only shift water to cities in years when municipal supplies are inadequate, such as drought and post‐drought storage recovery, and by consolidating individual farm‐to‐city …

Greedy Signal Recovery Review, Deanna Needell, Joel A. Tropp, Roman Vershynin Dec 2008

Greedy Signal Recovery Review, Deanna Needell, Joel A. Tropp, Roman Vershynin

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

The two major approaches to sparse recovery are L1-minimization and greedy methods. Recently, Needell and Vershynin developed Regularized Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (ROMP) that has bridged the gap between these two approaches. ROMP is the first stable greedy algorithm providing uniform guarantees.

Even more recently, Needell and Tropp developed the stable greedy algorithm Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit (CoSaMP). CoSaMP provides uniform guarantees and improves upon the stability bounds and RIC requirements of ROMP. CoSaMP offers rigorous bounds on computational cost and storage. In many cases, the running time is just O(NlogN), where N is the ambient dimension of the signal. This …

Applications Of Operations Research In Domestic Electric Utilities, Jametta Myers Dec 2008

Applications Of Operations Research In Domestic Electric Utilities, Jametta Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Since its inception in the 1950s, operations research has been used in a number of industries, including the energy industry. Documentation of its use in exploration, production, gasoline blending, oil spill management, coal mining, coal handling, and coal mixing is extensive. However, considerably less documented research exists for one significant customer of many of these products: the electric utility. This work reviews refereed literature from United States operations research journals that document the use of operations research in United States electric utility operations. Applications that centered specifically on the areas of thermal energy generation, transmission, distribution, capacity planning, electric power …

Learning-Based Fusion For Data Deduplication, Sabra Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Stephen W. Clyde, Jared Dinerstein

Faculty Publications

Rule-based deduplication utilizes expert domain knowledge to identify and remove duplicate data records. Achieving high accuracy in a rule-based system requires the creation of rules containing a good combination of discriminatory clues. Unfortunately, accurate rule-based deduplication often requires significant manual tuning of both the rules and the corresponding thresholds. This need for manual tuning reduces the efficacy of rule-based deduplication and its applicability to real-world data sets. No adequate solution exists for this problem. We propose a novel technique for rule-based deduplication. We apply individual deduplication rules, and combine the resultant match scores via learning-based information fusion. We show empirically …

Decision Tree Ensemble: Small Heterogeneous Is Better Than Large Homogeneous, Mike Gashler, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez Dec 2008

Decision Tree Ensemble: Small Heterogeneous Is Better Than Large Homogeneous, Mike Gashler, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

Using decision trees that split on randomly selected attributes is one way to increase the diversity within an ensemble of decision trees. Another approach increases diversity by combining multiple tree algorithms. The random forest approach has become popular because it is simple and yields good results with common datasets. We present a technique that combines heterogeneous tree algorithms and contrast it with homogeneous forest algorithms. Our results indicate that random forests do poorly when faced with irrelevant attributes, while our heterogeneous technique handles them robustly. Further, we show that large ensembles of random trees are more susceptible to diminishing returns …

Physics & Astronomy

Neutral hydrogen clusters are grown in ultracold helium nanodroplets by successive pickup of hydrogen molecules. Even-numbered hydrogen cluster cations are observed upon electron-impact ionization with and without attached helium atoms and in addition to the familiar odd-numbered H(n)(+). The helium matrix affects the fragmentation dynamics that usually lead to the formation of overwhelmingly odd-numbered H(n)(+). The use of high-resolution mass spectrometry allows the unambiguous identification of even-numbered H(n)(+) up to n congruent to 120 by their mass excess that distinguishes them from He(n)(+), mixed He(m)H(n)(+), and background ions. The large range in size of these hydrogen cluster ions is unprecedented, …

A Multizone Model For Simulating The High-Energy Variability Of Tev Blazars, Philip B. Graff, Markos Georganopoulos, Eric S. Perlman, Demosthenes Kazanas

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present a time-dependent multizone code for simulating the variability of synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) sources. The code adopts a multizone pipe geometry for the emission region, appropriate for simulating emission from a standing or propagating shock in a collimated jet. Variations in the injection of relativistic electrons in the inlet propagate along the length of the pipe, cooling radiatively. Our code for the first time takes into account the nonlocal, time-retarded nature of SSC losses that are thought to be dominant in TeV blazars. The observed synchrotron and SSC emission is followed self-consistently, taking into account light-travel time delays. At …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Rate coefficients for rotational transitions in H2 induced by H2 impact are presented. Extensive quantum mechanical coupled-channel calculations based on a recently published (H2)2 potential energy surface were performed. The potential energy surface used here has been demonstrated to be more reliable than surfaces used in previous work. Rotational transition cross sections with initial levels of J≤8 were computed for collision energies ranging between 10-4 and 2.5 eV, and the corresponding rate coefficients were calculated for the temperature range 2≤T≤10,000 K. In general, agreement with earlier calculations, which were limited to 100-6000 K, …
