Geochemical Impacts From Permanganate Oxidation Based On Field Scale Assessments., Kelly Ann Moore Dec 2008

Geochemical Impacts From Permanganate Oxidation Based On Field Scale Assessments., Kelly Ann Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) using permanganate is a technology for treatment of organic hazardous wastes. This research is a review of 30 permanganate (MnO4-) ISCO sites to determine whether there are long term impacts on groundwater quality due to the introduction of the oxidant into the subsurface. A second objective is to determine if manganese concentration can be predicted by trends in specific pre and postoxidation monitored parameters (i.e., pH and oxidation reduction potential (ORP)). The final objective is to identify the effects of site and design conditions on groundwater conditions postoxidation. Results indicate that (1) …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Progress toward the syntheses of new tetranuclear bimetallic complexes of copper(II) and ruthenium(II) was realized. The designed triads comprise a central binuclear copper(II) complex with a tetraiminodiphenolate macrocyclic Robson-type compartmental ligand. In the envisioned complexes, the macrocyclic core is further functionalized by attachment of two polypyridyl ruthenium(II) complexes. A novel dibrominated dicopper(II) Robson complex was formed by the 2:2:2 condensation reaction of 4-bromo-2,6-diformylphenol and 1,3- diaminopropane with cupric chloride. Similarly, a new dibrominated dizinc(II) was synthesized from zinc tetrafluoroborate and the same diamine and dialdehyde. The new dicopper(II) complex did not heterocouple with borylated substrates under explored Suzuki reaction conditions. …

Reconfiguration Of Distribution System Using Survivability Index, Bidur Raj Gautam Dec 2008

Reconfiguration Of Distribution System Using Survivability Index, Bidur Raj Gautam

Theses and Dissertations

Electrical power systems are vulnerable to contingencies due to the possibility of fault or damage. When a serious fault (which cannot be removed immediately) occurs in the power system, the fault needs to be isolated, and the remaining system should be reconfigured to make efficient use of available energy. Reconfiguring the system by making an island can be one of the strategies to continue the energy supply using the remaining generation capacity. By analyzing the effect of contingencies on power systems in terms of voltage support, reliability and stability, survivability of the system can be predicted. A survivability index of …

Responsiveness Of Elementary-Aged Students, With And Without Specific Learning Disabilities, To Interventions For Mathematics Calculation, Masanori Ota Dec 2008

Responsiveness Of Elementary-Aged Students, With And Without Specific Learning Disabilities, To Interventions For Mathematics Calculation, Masanori Ota

Theses and Dissertations

The Response to Intervention (RtI) model is an identification model for Specific Learning Disability (SLD), one of the 13 disability categories identified under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004. The RtI model has been proposed as an alternative model to the discrepancy model (e.g., intelligence quotient-achievement discrepancy model). In the RtI model, students’ responsiveness (e.g., levels of performance and slopes of progress) yields their eligibility for special education. However, to date, research that examined the validity of the RtI model (e.g., examination of intervention responsiveness with students with academic deficits) has been limited in the area of …

Nitrogen Doping In Low Temperature Halo-Carbon Homoepitaxial Growth Of 4h-Silicon Carbide, Kritsa Chindanon Dec 2008

Nitrogen Doping In Low Temperature Halo-Carbon Homoepitaxial Growth Of 4h-Silicon Carbide, Kritsa Chindanon

Theses and Dissertations

With the low-temperature halo-carbon epitaxial growth technique developed at MSU prior to this work, use of a halo-carbon growth precursor enabled low-temperature homoepitaxial process for 4H-SiC at temperatures below 1300 °C with good quality. Investigations of the nitrogen doping dependence are reported. It has been demonstrated that the efficiency of the nitrogen incorporation may be different for different substrate orientations, with the Cace showing the higher value of doping. The Si/C ratio is known to influence the doping during the epitaxial growth due to the site-competition mechanism. The doping on the Cace showed weak dependence on the Si/C ratio. On …

Development Of A Geovisual Analytics Environment Using Parallel Coordinates With Applications To Tropical Cyclone Trend Analysis, Chad A. Steed

Theses and Dissertations

A global transformation is being fueled by unprecedented growth in the quality, quantity, and number of different parameters in environmental data through the convergence of several technological advances in data collection and modeling. Although these data hold great potential for helping us understand many complex and, in some cases, life-threatening environmental processes, our ability to generate such data is far outpacing our ability to analyze it. In particular, conventional environmental data analysis tools are inadequate for coping with the size and complexity of these data. As a result, users are forced to reduce the problem in order to adapt to …

Development Of Corrective Actions For Higher Order Contingencies, Bharath Kumar Ravulapati Dec 2008

Development Of Corrective Actions For Higher Order Contingencies, Bharath Kumar Ravulapati

Theses and Dissertations

The importance of the electric power infrastructure has been exposed by several blackouts throughout the world in the last decade. These blackouts were caused mainly by physical vulnerabilities, human errors and natural disasters. The power grid is becoming more and more prone to outages which affect not only the power system network, but also other infrastructures and the society in several ways. Utilities generally operate with an (N-1) security level (no violations for single outage), and blackouts are generally caused by higher order contingencies. There is lack of effective methods and analysis tools to deal with higher order contingencies. Higher …

Enhanced Models For Mixtures Of Fluids In Chemical Equilibrium At High Pressures, Pietro Gaiaschi Dec 2008

Enhanced Models For Mixtures Of Fluids In Chemical Equilibrium At High Pressures, Pietro Gaiaschi

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is concerned with the numerical simulation of mixtures of chemically reacting fluids at high pressures. Mixture rules are established, accommodating components that do not follow the thermally perfect Equation of State (EoS), and including formulas for the fugacities. Particular attention has been given to the species EoS originally developed by Hirschfelder, Buehler, McGee and Sutton. The Law of Mass Action that governs chemical equilibrium of mixtures of fluids is presented. The common assumption of neglecting fugacities contributions when calculating the equilibrium composition is assessed by comparing complete thermochemical predictions with those obtained by reduced models. For air mixtures …
