A Sequential Algorithm For Biological Event Detection Using Statistical Nonstationarity, John Dicecco Jan 2008

A Sequential Algorithm For Biological Event Detection Using Statistical Nonstationarity, John Dicecco

Open Access Dissertations

High dimension complex dynamical systems, such as those found in physiological processes, produce time series which are often accompanied by nonstationarity. In many cases, the nonstationarity is caused by a physiologically significant event such as the prelude to ventricular fibrillation in cardiac arrest or the change of stasis by introducing pharmaceuticals. A need exists to be able to detect and monitor this change. Most conventional attempts at addressing this problem involve segmenting the time series and evaluating the statistics of the segments. The difficulty with this approach is that the nature of the nonstationarity can be transient, such that it …

An Examination Of Price In The Economic Management Of Marine Resources: Three Empirical Essays, Diego Valderrama Rojas Jan 2008

An Examination Of Price In The Economic Management Of Marine Resources: Three Empirical Essays, Diego Valderrama Rojas

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation conducts an examination of price as an economic parameter of strategic importance for the improved management of marine resources. To this end, the dissertation examines three different problems in marine resource economics: the effectiveness of rotational management strategies in the Atlantic sea scallop fishery; the implications of market interactions with the aquaculture sector for Alaskan salmon fisheries; and the effectiveness of targeted tariffs in the 2004 shrimp antidumping case. Each of these studies tackles a number of management issues of current relevance for U.S. fisheries. In each case, economic analysis leads to a better understanding of the concept …

Truncated Toeplitz Operators On Finite Dimensional Spaces, William T. Ross, Joseph A. Cima, Warren R. Wogen Jan 2008

Truncated Toeplitz Operators On Finite Dimensional Spaces, William T. Ross, Joseph A. Cima, Warren R. Wogen

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the matrix representations of compressions of Toeplitz operators to the finite dimensional model spaces H2ƟBH2, where B is a finite Blaschke product. In particular, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions - in terms of the matrix representation - of when a linear transformation on H2ƟBH2 is the compression of a Toeplitz operator. This result complements a related result of Sarason [6].

Cold Nuclear Matter Effects On J/Ψ Production As Constrained By Deuteron-Gold Measurements At Snn=200 Gev, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Klaus Dehmelt, Marcus Hohlmann, S. Rembeczki, Phenix Collaboration

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present a new analysis of J/ψ production yields in deuteron-gold collisions at √sNN=200 GeV using data taken from the PHENIX experiment in 2003 and previously published in S. S. Adler et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 012304 (2006)]. The high statistics proton-proton J/ψ data taken in 2005 are used to improve the baseline measurement and thus construct updated cold nuclear matter modification factors (RdAu). A suppression of J/ψ in cold nuclear matter is observed as one goes forward in rapidity (in the deuteron-going direction), corresponding to a region more sensitive to initial-state low-ₓ gluons in the gold nucleus. The …

Constraining Convection Parameters From The Light Curve Shapes Of Pulsating White Dwarf Stars: The Cases Of Ec 14012-1446 And Wd 1524-0030, Gerald Handler, Judith L. Provençal, Michael H. Montgomery, Encarni Romero-Colmenero, Kaushar Sanchawala, Monika A. Lendl, Matt A. Wood, Isaac M. Silver, Paul G. Beck, Wenping Chen

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Montgomery [1] developed a method to probe convection in pulsating white dwarf stars which allows the recovery of the thermal response time of the convection zone by fitting observed non sinusoidal light curves. He applied this method to two objects; the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) observed the pulsating DB white dwarf GD 358 for just this purpose. Given this WET run's success, it is time to extend Montgomery's method to pulsating DA white dwarf (ZZ Ceti) stars. We present observations of two ZZ Ceti stars, WD 1524 - 0030 and EC 14012 - 1446, both observed from multiple sites. EC …

Evaluation Of The Long-Term Impact Of The Tostan Programme On The Abandonment Of Fgm/C And Early Marriage: Results From A Qualitative Study In Senegal, Nafissatou J. Diop, Amadou Moreau, Helene Benga Jan 2008

Evaluation Of The Long-Term Impact Of The Tostan Programme On The Abandonment Of Fgm/C And Early Marriage: Results From A Qualitative Study In Senegal, Nafissatou J. Diop, Amadou Moreau, Helene Benga

Reproductive Health

In 1998–99, a village empowerment program was implemented in the Thiès/Fatick and Kolda regions of Senegal by the nongovernmental organization Tostan, to mobilize communities to hold public declarations in support of abandoning harmful traditional practices, including female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and child marriage. The information presented in this report indicates that many did end the practices following a public declaration, however, the lack of follow-up in the field and the absence of support mechanisms pose a large obstacle. Nevertheless, the program achieved significant results: knowledge of life skills resulting in positive changes and a shift in the perception of FGM/C …

Evaluation Of The Algorithms And Parameterizations For Ground Thawing And Freezing Simulation In Permafrost Regions, Yinsou Zhang, Sean K. Carey, William L. Quinton

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Ground thawing and freezing depths (GTFDs) strongly influence the hydrology and energy balances of permafrost regions. Current methods to simulate GTFD differ in algorithm type, soil parameterization, representation of latent heat, and unfrozen water content. In this study, five algorithms (one semiempirical, two analytical, and two numerical), three soil thermal conductivity parameterizations, and three unfrozen water parameterizations were evaluated against detailed field measurements at four field sites in Canada’s discontinuous permafrost region. Key findings include: (1) de Vries’ parameterization is recommended to determine the thermal conductivity in permafrost soils; (2) the three unfrozen water parameterization methods exhibited little difference in …
