Higher Derivatives Of Spectral Functions Associated With One-Dimensional Schrodinger Operators, Daphne Gilbert, B.J. Harris, S.M. Riehl Jan 2008

Higher Derivatives Of Spectral Functions Associated With One-Dimensional Schrodinger Operators, Daphne Gilbert, B.J. Harris, S.M. Riehl

Articles

We investigate the existence and asymptotic behaviour of higher derivatives of the spectral function in the context of one-dimensional Schr¨odinger operators on the half-line with integrable potentials. In particular, we identify sufficient conditions on the potential for the existence and continuity of the n-th derivative, and outline a systematic procedure for estimating numerical upper bounds for the turning points of such derivatives. Explicit worked examples illustrate the development and application of the theory.

Is Race In Public Schools Still Compelling?Parents Involved In Community Schools V.Seattle School District No. 1justice Breyer's Theory Of Active Liberty, Andpractical Considerations Of Democracy, Andrea Kayne Kaufman

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This article explores why the promise of ending our dual society, as first articulated in Brown v. Board of Education, has not been fulfilled. Specifically this article examines a more recent case, Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1, addressing the lost promise of Brown and the implications for our dual society.

Finders Sleepers: Why Recent State Regulation Of Financial Intermediaries Should Rouse The Federal Government From Its Slumber, Jeffrey D. Chadwick

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This comment argues that the current treatment of financial intermediaries in the capital-raising process is unresponsive to the changing landscape of the small business community. Not only does the SEC inadequately define the permissible role of a finder, recent legislation in Texas and South Dakota foreshadows the ills of a dual regulatory society. Rather than waiting for states to address the finder's dilemma on an ad hoc and inconsistent basis, the federal government should create an SEC-registered class of finders to facilitate capital formation and jumpstart a receding American economy. Part II examines the expanding role of financial intermediaries in …

Contextualising Nanotechnology In Chemistry Education, Christine O'Connor, Hugh Hayden Jan 2008

Contextualising Nanotechnology In Chemistry Education, Christine O'Connor, Hugh Hayden

Articles

This paper will give an example of a pedagogical approach taken in integrating nanotechnology into a chemistry degree course. In recent years nanotechnology has widely become part of the course content for undergraduate chemistry and physics degree curriculum. How contextualised the delivery of the subject matter may vary. The role of contextualisation of nanotechnology in the delivery of the content is the main focus of this paper, as to date in Ireland and many other countries nanotechnology has not been integrated into many chemistry degree courses but is slowly becoming the case. An evaluative methodology of the pedagogical approach for …

Prediction Of Breathing Patterns Using Neural Networks, Pavani Davuluri Jan 2008

Prediction Of Breathing Patterns Using Neural Networks, Pavani Davuluri

Theses and Dissertations

During the radio therapy treatment, it has been difficult to synchronize the radiation beam with the tumor position. Many compensation techniques have been used before. But all these techniques have some system latency, up to a few hundred milliseconds. Hence it is necessary to predict tumor position to compensate for the control system latency. In recent years, many attempts have been made to predict the position of a moving tumor during respiration. Analyzing external breathing signals presents a methodology in predicting the tumor position. Breathing patterns vary from very regular to irregular patterns. The irregular breathing patterns make prediction difficult. …

Practical Rationality In The Nicomachean Ethics: An Investigation Into The Use Of Craft Analogies In Relation To Practical Wisdom (Phronesis) And Happiness (Eudaimonia), Tom Vanderveen Jan 2008

Practical Rationality In The Nicomachean Ethics: An Investigation Into The Use Of Craft Analogies In Relation To Practical Wisdom (Phronesis) And Happiness (Eudaimonia), Tom Vanderveen

Theses

This thesis is an investigation into Aristotle’s use of craft analogies in the Nicomachean Ethics, as instructional to his concept of practical wisdom and happiness. For Aristotle, ethics is predominantly a practice, thus the focus is on practical rationality rather than theory. For this reason, Aristotle’s discussion of ethics lends itself to the use of craft analogy, in that craft is a practice. It is argued that while being a good pedagogical tool, craft analogies fall short, because they do not cover the full gamut of human experience.

Comprehensive Planning In Louisiana, Lynn A. Maloney-Mújica Jan 2008

Comprehensive Planning In Louisiana, Lynn A. Maloney-Mújica

LSU Master's Theses

This study explores the factors associated with the implementation of land use planning policies and tools among the parishes (counties) of Louisiana. There is an absence of statutory standards, strict guidelines, and other external drivers for planning in Louisiana and the extent to which local governments regulate land use varies widely among local jurisdictions. The purpose of this study is to provide an empirical model of intrinsic factors that might explain why some parishes have decided to intervene in land use by adopting a high number of planning policies and tools, and why others have failed to adopt few, if …

Validation Of Two Qualitative Occupational Expose Assessment Models For Particulates And Vapors, Leshan J. Elliott Jan 2008

Validation Of Two Qualitative Occupational Expose Assessment Models For Particulates And Vapors, Leshan J. Elliott

All ETDs from UAB

o ensure industrial workers are not overexposed to hazardous chemicals, it is necessary to evaluate the magnitude of occupational exposures. Small and medium sized companies usually do not employ industrial hygienists or other professionals trained in occupational exposure evaluations. Thus, traditional quantitative air sampling methods are usually not feasible due to resource and budgetary limitations. Qualitative exposure assessment models have gained in popularity because they are simple, inexpensive, and less time consuming than quantitative methods. Models are available which predict exposure concentrations or categorize exposures as acceptable or unacceptable. Unfortunately, most models have not been validated or previous studies have …

The Impacts Of River Impoundment: A Case Study Of H. Neely Henry Lake In Northeast Alabama, Willis Scott Estis

LSU Master's Theses

Dam building is one of the methods that modern civilization uses in an attempt to harness the power of nature. These dams and the impoundments associated with them can contribute numerous positive impacts to the surrounding human population. Unfortunately, there are negative impacts as well. This research focuses on one impoundment in particular, H. Neely Henry Lake in northeast Alabama (an impoundment of the Coosa River). Site-specific information regarding the H. Neely Henry development is explored including area geography, history, and the formation of the Alabama Power Company – the agency responsible for H. Neely Henry and other Coosa River …

Computed Tomography Imaging To Quantify Iodine Distribution In Iododeoxyuridine-Labeled Dna, Christopher Erik Welch Jan 2008

Computed Tomography Imaging To Quantify Iodine Distribution In Iododeoxyuridine-Labeled Dna, Christopher Erik Welch

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: Treatment planning for x-ray activated Auger electron radiotherapy requires knowledge of the spatial distribution of Auger electron-producing target atoms in DNA; iodine is a candidate atom. Because planning uses computed tomography (CT) data to show anatomy, obtaining the target atoms' distribution with CT methods is an attractive goal. This study evaluates the ability of two available CT systems to measure the target atoms' spatial distribution. Method and Materials: A polychromatic desktop CT scanner and a synchrotron monochromatic CT system acquired images of iodine concentrations in water, ranging from 0.03-10 mg/ml. The polychromatic scanner was operated at 40 kVp while …

Design And Realization Of An Electrophoretron Cycler, Celine Raymonde Ramet Jan 2008

Design And Realization Of An Electrophoretron Cycler, Celine Raymonde Ramet

LSU Master's Theses

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a powerful enzymatic reaction commonly used to amplify specific sequences of Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA). Since the introduction of the lab on a chip concept, numerous Continuous Flow PCR cyclers were realized with success at the micro scale. As reducing the reactor size and improving thermal management led to reduced sample volumes, results could be achieved much faster with these CF-PCR cyclers than with common commercial cycler. Furthermore, most of these demonstrated CF-PCRs are nowadays evolving towards high-throughput systems. However, most CF-PCR cyclers require complex manipulations and are not flexible (e.g. fixed number of cycles, …

Two Post-Harvest Treatments For The Reduction Of Vibrio Vulnificus And Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Eastern Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica), Kevin Patrick Melody Jan 2008

Two Post-Harvest Treatments For The Reduction Of Vibrio Vulnificus And Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Eastern Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica), Kevin Patrick Melody

LSU Master's Theses

Vibrio vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus are naturally occurring estuarine bacteria and the leading causes of seafood-borne illness in the United States. Multiple outbreaks due to raw oyster consumption in the last decade has lead to much research to remediate these bacteria from oysters destined for the half-shell market. The focus of this research was to investigate the efficacy of icing and high salinity exposure as two post-harvest treatments for the reduction in numbers of V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus in commercial quantities of shellstock oysters. The icing experiment was conducted in the summer of 2006, and the high salinity trials …

Hatchability Of Post-Peak Egg Production Broiler Breeder Eggs As Influenced By Pre-Incubation Warming, Cameron Benjamin Wiggins Ii

LSU Master's Theses

This research was conducted to determine the effects of pre-incubation warming on the hatchability of post-peak egg production broiler breeder eggs. An experiment with six trials was conducted with 7,920 freshly laid eggs from Ross 308 and 708 broiler breeders from 61-67-wks of age. For each trial, 1,320 eggs were used to determine if pre-incubation warming treatments of 0, 2, 4, and 6, or 0, 3, 6, and 9, or 0, 9, 12 and 15 hrs (at 37.6°C) could improve the hatchability of eggs stored (at 15.5°C) for three days. After a storage period of three days, the eggs were …

An Analysis Of The Benefits And Patterns Of Public Support For Urban Forestry Programs, Barbi Marisa Landano

LSU Master's Theses

Trees are an essential element in a healthy urban community. They provide many benefits if they are properly managed and maintained throughout their lives. In order to accomplish this, urban forestry programs need to be established and there needs to be a good support system within the city. The objectives of this study are to identify key factors that may influence public support for urban forestry programs and to examine the role of nonprofit organizations in building support for and implementing urban forest programs. Surveys of Baton Rouge, Louisiana residents were conducted to identify the variables that are associated with …

Denitrification Enzyme Activity As An Indicator Of Nitrate Loading In A Wetland Receiving Diverted Mississippi River Water, Lisa Michelle Gardner Jan 2008

Denitrification Enzyme Activity As An Indicator Of Nitrate Loading In A Wetland Receiving Diverted Mississippi River Water, Lisa Michelle Gardner

LSU Master's Theses

The Davis Pond freshwater diversion discharges nutrient-rich Mississippi River water to a 3,760 ha receiving marsh in upper Barataria Basin, LA. Excess nitrate in the Mississippi River has been linked to algal blooms and hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico with potential to negatively impact Barataria Basin. We hypothesized that 1) soil denitrification enzyme activity (DEA) will increase with higher surface water nitrate concentrations, and 2) the spatial distribution of DEA in Davis Pond marsh will provide information about the extent nitrate loading at a specific discharge rate. Intact soil cores collected from the marsh received a continuous flow of …

Modeling Of Solute Transport And Retention In Upper Amite River, Hoonshin Jung Jan 2008

Modeling Of Solute Transport And Retention In Upper Amite River, Hoonshin Jung

LSU Master's Theses

Streams play an important role in a solute transport through a stream network. Transient storage is one of the important processes that control mass exchange between a main stream and transient storage zones because of increase in the residence time of solute. In order to take account of the effect of transient storage on solute transport in streams, a variable residence time (VART) model was developed. The model is characterized by several features: (1) actual varying residence time was used, (2) no-user specified residence time distributions (RTD) were required, (3) less calibration parameters were involved as compared to existing models, …

Shellfish production is often affected by bacterial pathogens that cause high losses in hatcheries and nurseries. We evaluated the relative survival of larvae and juveniles of 3 Crassostrea virginica oyster lines: (1) GHP, a Rhode Island line; (2) NEHY, a line resistant to dermo and multinucleated sphere X diseases; and (3) FLOWERS, a line resistant to Roseovarius oyster disease, experimental challenge with Vibrio spp. isolates RE22 and RE101, causative agents of bacillary necrosis in Pacific oyster larvae, and the type strain of Roseovarius crassostreae, causative agent of Roseovarius oyster disease. All of the isolates were able to induce significant …

The Balancing Act, David Weaver Jan 2008

The Balancing Act, David Weaver

Conference papers and presentations

Nutrient management is as much a global issue as a local one with a balance required between economics and environment, inherent biological limitations and expectations of nutrient use efficiency, and traditional fertiliser practices and actual enterprise nutrient requirements. The concept of nutrient balance depends on context and scale. Nutrient balance can be considered at a global scale, where issues of nutrient stocks, cycles, depletion and transfer of a particular element are important. For a single farm enterprise, nutrient balance might be considered in terms of phosphorus (P) inputs into and outputs from the enterprise. This is commonly known as a …

Reclamation Of Saline Soils Through Revegetation In Australia: Plants, Processes And People, Edward G. Barrett-Lennard Jan 2008

Reclamation Of Saline Soils Through Revegetation In Australia: Plants, Processes And People, Edward G. Barrett-Lennard

Conference papers and presentations

Secondary salinity (salinity induced by human activity) is a major world problem. Hydrological imbalances in landscapes cause watertables to rise, drawing salt from deeper in the soil profile to the soil surface, where the combined stresses of salinity and waterlogging threaten the growth of crops and pastures. The reversal of salinity by the broad‐scale reintroduction of perennial plants back into landscapes may not be economically feasible, but watertables may be at least partly directly drawn‐down by the grow th of salt tolerant plants (halophytes) on saltland . This review summarises data from Australia in which the water use by perennial …

Correlates Of Success In The Sociology Major, Kathleen Mckinney Jan 2008

Correlates Of Success In The Sociology Major, Kathleen Mckinney

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

My focus in this exploratory study is on factors related to success in the sociology major. One hundred, fourteen graduating majors from a mid-sized, public university completed a self-administered questionnaire. Students reported that talking with others about the material as well as using application, real world examples, and review strategies are critical to their learning. In multiple regression analyses, there is limited evidence for a positive relationship between several interpersonal academic/study behavior variables and success. Multiple and ordinal regression analyses point to a negative relationship between age and success in the sociology major at this institution. Implications for teaching and …

Internationalising Peer Review In Teaching And Learning, Sean Brawley

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: In 2004 I decided to apply for promotion from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor. Mine is an Australian research intensive university. Having reviewed the promotion literature, I decided to seek promotion based on an ‘outstanding’ contribution to teaching and learning. At the time the university was expending far greater efforts to improve teaching and learning after rating very poorly on a national student survey. Having made a contribution to the furthering of teaching and learning, the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) and the head of the recently established teaching and learning unit were quick to offer their support to my …

Casting A Wider Net: Deepening Scholarship By Changing Theories, Gillian Gerhard Dr., Jolie Mayer-Smith Jan 2008

Casting A Wider Net: Deepening Scholarship By Changing Theories, Gillian Gerhard Dr., Jolie Mayer-Smith

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Research questions are shaped, explicitly or implicitly, by the theories we bring to bear upon our scholarship. Broadening our theoretical perspectives allows us to frame richer, deeper questions about the teaching and learning happening in our classrooms. This paper explicates the research implications of three broad theories of learning (constructivist, socio-cultural, and complexivist), exploring what scholarship framed by each theory might look like and some of the strengths and limitations of each framework. The authors use their experience engaging in research on teaching and learning in an undergraduate interdisciplinary science program to illustrate the argument that changing theories can help …

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: Informal research is occurring everyday in college classrooms around the world. Many of us don’t even realize we are doing it, maybe we decided to try out a new discussion format todsay, or wanted to see how students would react to a new assessment technique. Good teachers are constantly refining their teaching to improve student learning and motivation. The faculty member interested in pursuing scholarly inquiry in the classroom can look to Savory, Burnett and Goodburn for a detailed, practical guide for engaging in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
