Maya: An Integrated Curriculum Unit, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver

Ricks Curriculum Units Series

An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. An integrated-thematic curriculum permits students to be active participants in their own learning as they design their own explorations and take …

A New Perspective: Atlantic Herring (Clupea Harengus) As A Case Study For Time Series Analysis And Historical Data, Emily Klein

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis endeavors to develop methods for the historical analysis of a specific species and location to begin understanding fishery patterns and change over time. The main goal was to develop statistical methods to address historical data and provide long-term information on fishery trends and potential relationships between the fishery and outside influences. The Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) fishery was investigated for underlying patterns and the possible impact of outside variables and events from 1870 to 2007.

In the Gulf of Maine, Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) provide critical forage for many economically valuable species, while supporting a major New England …

Parallel And Distributed Computing Using Pervasive Web And Object Technologies, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski Jan 2008

Parallel And Distributed Computing Using Pervasive Web And Object Technologies, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We review the growing power and capability of commodity computing and communication technologies largely driven by commercial distributed information systems. These systems are built from CORBA, Microsoft’s COM, Javabeans, and less sophisticated web and networked approaches. One can abstract these to a three-tier model with largely independent clients connected to a distributed network of servers. The latter host various services including object and relational databases and, of course, parallel and sequential computing. High performance can be obtained by combining concurrency at the middle-server tier with optimized parallel back-end services. The resultant system combines the needed performance for large-scale HPCC applications …

Energy-Dependent Ps-He Momentum-Transfer Cross Section At Low Energies, J. J. Engbrecht, M. J. Erickson, C. P. Johnson, A. J. Kolan, A. E. Legard, S. P. Lund, M. J. Nyflot, J. D. Paulsen

Physics - All Scholarship

Positronium (Ps)-He scattering presents one of the few opportunities for both theory and experiment to tackle the fundamental interactions of Ps with ordinary matter. Below the dissociation energy of 6.8 eV, experimental and theoretical work has struggled to find agreement on the strength of this interaction as measured by the momentum-transfer cross section (Ïm). Here, we present work utilizing the Doppler broadening technique with an age-momentum correlation apparatus. This work demonstrates a strong energy dependence for this cross section at energies below 1 eV and is consistent with previous experimental results.

Picovoltmeter For Probing Vortex Dynamics In A Single Weak-Pinning Corbino Channel, T. W. Heitmann, Kang Yu, C. Song, M P. Defeo, B.L.T. Plourde Jan 2008

Picovoltmeter For Probing Vortex Dynamics In A Single Weak-Pinning Corbino Channel, T. W. Heitmann, Kang Yu, C. Song, M P. Defeo, B.L.T. Plourde

Physics - All Scholarship

We have developed a picovoltmeter using a Nb dc Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) for measuring the flux-flow voltage from a small number of vortices moving through a submicron weak-pinning superconducting channel. We have applied this picovoltmeter to measure the vortex response in a single channel arranged in a circle on a Corbino disk geometry. The circular channel allows the vortices to follow closed orbits without encountering any sample edges, thus eliminating the influence of entry barriers.

Exact Lattice Supersymmetry: The Two-Dimensional N = 2 Wess-Zumino Model, Simon Catterall, Sergey Karamov Jan 2008

Exact Lattice Supersymmetry: The Two-Dimensional N = 2 Wess-Zumino Model, Simon Catterall, Sergey Karamov

Physics - All Scholarship

We study the two-dimensional Wess-Zumino model with extended N = 2 supersymmetry on the lattice. The lattice prescription we choose has the merit of preserving exactly a single supersymmetric invariance at finite lattice spacing a. Furthermore, we construct three other transformations of the lattice fields under which the variation of the lattice action vanishes to O(ga2) where g is a typical interaction coupling. These four transformations correspond to the two Majorana supercharges of the continuum theory. We also derive lattice Ward identities corresponding to these exact and approximate symmetries. We use dynamical fermion simulations to check the equality of the …

Amicus Brief Of Economists Ackerman Et Al. In Entergy V. Riverkeepers, Douglas A. Kysar, David M. Driesen

College of Law - Faculty Scholarship

A group of academic economists filed this amicus brief in a pending Supreme Court case, Entergy v. Riverkeepers. The amicus brief addresses questions pertaining to the nature and limits of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and thus contributes to the ongoing scholarly debate about CBA's role in environmental law. The case raises the question of whether EPA may consider CBA in writing standards based on the "best technology available for minimizing environmental impacts" from intake of water to cool industrial facilities. This intake kills fish and disrupts eco-systems. The brief explains that cost-benefit balancing may be inappropriate for an agency implementing foundational …

Privacy-Maxent: Integrating Background Knowledge In Privacy Quantification, Wenliang Du, Zhouxuan Teng, Zutao Zhu Jan 2008

Privacy-Maxent: Integrating Background Knowledge In Privacy Quantification, Wenliang Du, Zhouxuan Teng, Zutao Zhu

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Privacy-Preserving Data Publishing (PPDP) deals with the publication of microdata while preserving people’s private information in the data. To measure how much private information can be preserved, privacy metrics is needed. An essential element for privacy metrics is the measure of how much adversaries can know about an individual’s sensitive attributes (SA) if they know the individual’s quasi-identifiers (QI), i.e., we need to measure P(SA | QI). Such a measure is hard to derive when adversaries’ background knowledge has to be considered. We propose a systematic approach, Privacy-MaxEnt, to integrate background knowledge in privacy quantification. Our approach is based on …

Dms Air/Sea Flux And Gas Transfer Coefficients From The North Atlantic Summertime Coccolithophore Bloom, Christa Marandino, Warren J. De Bruyn, Scott Miller, Eric S. Saltzman Jan 2008

Dms Air/Sea Flux And Gas Transfer Coefficients From The North Atlantic Summertime Coccolithophore Bloom, Christa Marandino, Warren J. De Bruyn, Scott Miller, Eric S. Saltzman

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Dimethylsulfide (DMS) atmospheric and oceanic concentrations and eddy covariance air/sea fluxes were measured over the N. Atlantic Ocean during July 2007 from Iceland to Woods Hole, MA, USA. Seawater DMS levels north of 55 degrees N ranged from 3 to 17 nM, with variability related to the satellite-derived distributions of coccoliths and to a lesser extent, chlorophyll. For the most intense bloom region southwest of Iceland, DMS air/sea fluxes were as high as 300 mu mol m(-2) d(-1), larger than current model estimates. The observations imply that gas exchange coefficients in this region are significantly greater than those estimated using …

Length Bias In The Measurements Of Carbon Nanotubes, Paul H. Kvam Jan 2008

Length Bias In The Measurements Of Carbon Nanotubes, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

To measure carbon nanotube lengths, atomic force microscopy and special software are used to identify and measure nanotubes on a square grid. Current practice does not include nanotubes that cross the grid, and, as a result, the sample is length-biased. The selection bias model can be demonstrated through Buffon’s needle problem, extended to general curves that more realistically represent the shape of nanotubes observed on a grid. In this article, the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator is constructed for the length distribution of the nanotubes, and the consequences of the length bias are examined. Probability plots reveal that the corrected length …

Degradation Models, Suk Joo Bae, Paul H. Kvam Jan 2008

Degradation Models, Suk Joo Bae, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Reliability testing typically generates product lifetime data, but for some tests, covariate information about the wear and tear on the product during the life test can provide additional insight into the product’s lifetime distribution. This usage, or degradation, can be the physical parameters of the product (e.g., corrosion thickness on a metal plate) or merely indicated through product performance (e.g., the luminosity of a light emitting diode). The measurements made across the product’s lifetime are degradation data, and degradation analysis is the statistical tool for providing inference about the lifetime distribution from the degradation data.

Load Sharing Models, Paul H. Kvam, Jye-Chyi Lu Jan 2008

Load Sharing Models, Paul H. Kvam, Jye-Chyi Lu

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Consider a system of components whose lifetimes are governed by a probability distribution. Load sharing refers to a model of stochastic interdependency between components that operate within a system. If components are set up in a parallel system (see Parallel, Series, and Series–Parallel Systems) for example, the system survives as long as at least one component is operating. In a typical load-sharing system, once a component fails, the remaining components suffer an increase in failure rate due to the extra “load” they must encumber due to the failed component.

Algorithm-Independent Optimal Input Fluxes For Boundary Identification In Thermal Imaging, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill Jan 2008

Algorithm-Independent Optimal Input Fluxes For Boundary Identification In Thermal Imaging, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

An inverse boundary determination problem for a parabolic model, arising in thermal imaging, is considered. The focus is on intelligently choosing an effective input heat flux, so as to maximize the practical effectiveness of an inversion algorithm. Three different methods, based on different interpretations of the term “effective", are presented and analyzed, then demonstrated through numerical examples. It is noteworthy that each of these flux-selection methods is independent of the particular inversion algorithm to be used.

The Bar-Natan Skein Module Of The Solid Torus And The Homology Of (N,N) Springer Varieties, Heather M. Russell Jan 2008

The Bar-Natan Skein Module Of The Solid Torus And The Homology Of (N,N) Springer Varieties, Heather M. Russell

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper establishes an isomorphism between the Bar-Natan skein module of the solid torus with a particular boundary curve system and the homology of the (n, n) Springer variety. The results build on Khovanov's work with crossingless matchings and the cohomology of the (n, n) Springer variety. We also give a formula for comultiplication in the Bar-Natan skein module for this specific three-manifold and boundary curve system.

Networks And Network Security, Michael Kuralt Jan 2008

Networks And Network Security, Michael Kuralt

Theses and Dissertations

In a world of ever-increasing security threats, companies have the difficult task of securing their networks from attack. One of the largest threats to a company is the users on its network. By educating its network administrators and employees about network threats, a company can lower its vulnerability to network attacks. Individual users also can benefit from understanding networks and network security by learning how to keep their computer and their information safe. Companies and users can stay safe by understanding how a network functions, what threats exist on the Internet, how to prevent and deal with attacks, and how …

A Stratigraphic And Depositional Interpretation Of A Sand Quarry In Middle Georgia, Jessica Taylor Jan 2008

A Stratigraphic And Depositional Interpretation Of A Sand Quarry In Middle Georgia, Jessica Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of sediments from two sand quarries in Mauk, Georgia indicate braided stream environment. Sediment samples of both Pleistocene and Cretaceous age were collected, sedimentary features such as trough cross-bedding along with laminar bedding were recorded, and photos were taken to document the scale and stratigraphic sequences of the sediments. Petrified wood was collected throughout the two sand quarries indicating a terrestrial origin. Post-depositional modifications seen at some of sites include load and flame structures. Sediment samples were examined for grain-size distributions and other sediment textures.

International Elections Experts, Monitors, And Representations In The Arab World, Sheila Carapico Jan 2008

International Elections Experts, Monitors, And Representations In The Arab World, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

Elections are sites of festivity, celebrity, and sometimes dramatic suspense, unique occasions for the simultaneous nationwide engagement of candidates, campaign volunteers, poll-workers, voters, and even abstainers and school-children in the quintessential patriotic experience. Yet in an era of globalization, national elections are not necessarily purely domestic affairs; a large cadre of expatriate consultants, trainer-trainers, and monitors often participate directly. This paper considers two alternative understandings of the role of North American, European, and international democracy brokers in Arab elections since the early nineteen nineties. The usual story is that Western democracies set aside democratic altruism to protect vital interests, allies, …

Relational Theory And Health Law And Policy, Jennifer Llewellyn, Jocelyn Downie Jan 2008

Relational Theory And Health Law And Policy, Jennifer Llewellyn, Jocelyn Downie

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Relational theory starts from an understanding of human selves as relational. This theory informs some significant current developments in the areas of philosophy, ethics and legal theory that re-envision key concepts including autonomy, equality, rights, justice, memory, trust, judgment and identity. In this paper we introduce relational theory and begin to explore some of its implications for health law and policy. In doing so, we hope to show the relevance of each field to the other and to persuade those interested in health law and policy to take up the challenge to pursue the transformative potential of relational theory through …

Bridging The Gap Between Truth And Reconciliation: Restorative Justice And The Indian Residential School Truth And Reconciliation Commission, Jennifer Llewellyn Jan 2008

Bridging The Gap Between Truth And Reconciliation: Restorative Justice And The Indian Residential School Truth And Reconciliation Commission, Jennifer Llewellyn

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

As suggested by the title Bridging the Gap between Truth and Reconciliation: Restorative Justice and the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission, this essay examines the potential gap between truth and reconciliation and suggests that the principles underlying restorative justice provide the necessary bridge. With respect to the goal of reconciling relationships, the author makes it clear that she is speaking of social relationships, not personal relationships. Restorative justice “is not about getting parties to hug and make up; rather, it strives to create the conditions of social relationships in which all parties might achieve meaningful, just, and peaceful …

Lignin Degradation In Wood-Feeding Insects, Scott M. Geib, Timothy R. Filley, Patrick G. Hatcher, Kelli Hoover, John E. Carlson, Maria Del Mar Jimenez-Gasco, Akiko Nakagawa-Izumi, Rachel L. Sleighter, Ming Tien Jan 2008

Lignin Degradation In Wood-Feeding Insects, Scott M. Geib, Timothy R. Filley, Patrick G. Hatcher, Kelli Hoover, John E. Carlson, Maria Del Mar Jimenez-Gasco, Akiko Nakagawa-Izumi, Rachel L. Sleighter, Ming Tien

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The aromatic polymer lignin protects plants from most forms of microbial attack. Despite the fact that a significant fraction of all lignocellulose degraded passes through arthropod guts, the fate of lignin in these systems is not known. Using tetramethylammonium hydroxide thermochemolysis, we show lignin degradation by two insect species, the Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) and the Pacific dampwood termite (Zootermopsis angusticollis). In both the beetle and termite, significant levels of propyl side-chain oxidation (depolymerization) and demethylation of ring methoxyl groups is detected; for the termite, ring hydroxylation is also observed. In addition, culture-independent fungal gut …

The Role Of Race In Dna Statistics: What Experts Say, What California Courts Allow, David H. Kaye Jan 2008

The Role Of Race In Dna Statistics: What Experts Say, What California Courts Allow, David H. Kaye

Faculty Scholarship

When a defendant's DNA matches a sample found at a crime scene, how compelling is the match? To answer this question, DNA analysts typically use numbers - "relative frequencies," "random match probabilities" or "likelihood ratios." They compute and present these quantities for the major racial or ethnic groups in the United States, supplying prosecutors with such mind-boggling figures as "one in nine hundred and fifty sextillion African Americans, one in one hundred and thirty septillion Caucasians, and one in nine hundred and thirty sextillion Hispanics."

A line of California cases rejects this established practice on relevance grounds. The theory of …
