Examination Of The Electroanalytic Performance Of Carbon Nanotube (Cnt) Modified Carbon Paste Electrodes As Xanthine Biosensor Transducers, Ülkü Anik, Meli̇ha Çubukçu
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The effect of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) on carbon paste electrode (CPE) electrochemical response was examined by introducing various portions of CNT into the CPE. The optimum electrode structure was determined by comparing the prepared electrodes´ electroanalytical performance towards ferricyanide. Then these optimum compositions were modified with xanthine oxidase (XO) enzyme for obtaining a xanthine biosensor. After the optimization of biosensor working conditions, the developed systems were characterized for xanthine. Linearity was obtained in the concentration range between 1 and 100 \mu M xanthine with an RSD value of 3.35% for MWCNT-CPE, while with SWCNT-CPE …

Synthesis And Cloning Of A Small Bacillus Pheromone Gene (Comx_{Ro-B-2}) By Primer-Dimer Formation With Pcr, Devri̇m Demi̇r Dora, Tanil Kocagöz, Fi̇li̇z Öner
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
ComX pheromone is the major extracellular signaling peptide stimulating transformation in response to high cell density in Bacillus species. In this study, Bacillus mojavensis ComX_{(RO-B-2)} pheromone gene was cloned to pGEMT-Easy vector based on TA cloning of PCR products. The gene encoding 11 amino acid peptides of Bacillus mojavensis RO-B-2 strain ComX pheromone (GLQIYTNWVPS) was obtained by PCR amplification of 2 primers complementary to each other at their 3' end. This eliminated the need for the original bacterial gene as DNA template for PCR. The amplified PCR products were ligated directly without any modification by T4 DNA ligase into pGEMT-Easy …

Abstract
Background
Charting the interactions among genes and among their protein products is essential for understanding biological systems. A flood of interaction data is emerging from high throughput technologies, computational approaches, and literature mining methods. Quick and efficient access to this data has become a critical issue for biologists. Several excellent multi-organism databases for gene and protein interactions are available, yet most of these have understandable difficulty maintaining comprehensive information for any one organism. No single database, for example, includes all available interactions, integrated gene expression data, and comprehensive and searchable gene information for the important model organism, Drosophila melanogaster. …

Detailed Characterization Of The Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Transcriptome Reveals Novel Genes And Intergenic Splicing Associated With Pluripotency, Galih Kunarso, Kee-Yew Wong, Lawrence W. Stanton, Leonard Lipovich
Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship
Abstract
Background
Transcriptional control of embryonic stem (ES) cell pluripotency has been a subject of intense study. Transcriptional regulators including Oct4 (Oct3/4 index), Sox2 and Nanog are fundamental for maintaining the undifferentiated state. However, the ES cell transcriptome is not limited to their targets, and exhibits considerable complexity when assayed with microarray, MPSS, cDNA/EST sequencing, and SAGE technologies. To identify novel genes associated with pluripotency, we globally searched for ES transcripts not corresponding to known genes, validated their sequences, determined their expression profiles, and employed RNAi to test their function.

The Problem Of Substantial Generation In Aristotle's Physical Writings, Michael Ivins
The Problem Of Substantial Generation In Aristotle's Physical Writings, Michael Ivins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the relation between Aristotle's account of the generation of substances and his attempt to lay the foundations for his natural philosophy. The central question concerns the injunction posed by the Eleatic philosophers to the study of nature on the basis of the principle "ex nihilo nihil" which they formulated into argument against the intelligibility of nature. Aristotle's Physics begins with a sustained attempt to defeat the Eleatic prohibition by demonstrating that change in general can be understood once a few principles are established. My reading of the arguments that constitute Aristotle's refutation of the Eleatics and the …

The Perceptions Of Taproot Teachers And Their Sustaining Force On A Year-Round Educational Program, Wilma Jean Allen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The concept of year-round education is not new. Year-round education (YRE) has an established foundation in the history of education. Research is available on the history, costs, achievement, discipline, calendars, and attendance in YRE. This study investigated the perceptions of taproot teachers in a rural agrarian Delaware school district. Two questions drove the investigation: 1) What character traits are demonstrated by taproot teachers? 2) How do the identified traits sustain and influence a year-round educational program? Qualitative data were gathered from interviews with two teachers and the principal currently working in a year-round school. The teachers were identified by their …
The Soul Of Classical American Philosophy: The Ethical And Spiritual Insights Of William James, Josiah Royce, And Charles Sanders Peirce By: Richard P. Mullin (Review), Alexander Stehn
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Sharing William James’ conviction that “no one of us can get along without the far-reaching beams of light [philosophy] sends over the world’s perspectives” (qtd. on xi), Richard Mullin’s new book seeks to communicate the ethical and spiritual insights of William James, Josiah Royce, and Charles Sanders Peirce to a non-specialist audience. Mullin follows the pragmatists he studies by dropping the traditional, dualistic notion of “soul” while insisting upon the importance of carefully attending to the following issues classically treated as pertaining thereto: the self, free will, moral values, community, and our relationship with the Transcendent (xi). With the pragmatic …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
3-Fluorothiophene is a small molecule and the known syntheses for this molecule are far from being straight forward and suffer from many drawbacks such as low yield, long synthetic procedures and the use of expensive or dangerous fluorinating agents. The synthesis of 3-fluorothiophene was accomplished in four steps and 49% overall yield by a very convenient method. 2,5-Dibromo-3-fluorothiophene was prepared in essentially one step synthesis involving a decarboxylation-bromination reaction. Both 3-fluorothiophene and 2,5-dibromo-3-fluorothiophene are potential monomers for a wide variety of fluorinated polythiophenes. Fluoroalkyl thiophene monomers, dimers and trimers were prepared. 3-Heptanoylthiophene is a key intermediate in the synthesis of …

Parallel And Distributed Computing Using Pervasive Web And Object Technologies, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
We review the growing power and capability of commodity computing and communication technologies largely driven by commercial distributed information systems. These systems are built from CORBA, Microsoft’s COM, Javabeans, and less sophisticated web and networked approaches. One can abstract these to a three-tier model with largely independent clients connected to a distributed network of servers. The latter host various services including object and relational databases and, of course, parallel and sequential computing. High performance can be obtained by combining concurrency at the middle-server tier with optimized parallel back-end services. The resultant system combines the needed performance for large-scale HPCC applications …

Positronium (Ps)-He scattering presents one of the few opportunities for both theory and experiment to tackle the fundamental interactions of Ps with ordinary matter. Below the dissociation energy of 6.8 eV, experimental and theoretical work has struggled to find agreement on the strength of this interaction as measured by the momentum-transfer cross section (Ïm). Here, we present work utilizing the Doppler broadening technique with an age-momentum correlation apparatus. This work demonstrates a strong energy dependence for this cross section at energies below 1 eV and is consistent with previous experimental results.

Picovoltmeter For Probing Vortex Dynamics In A Single Weak-Pinning Corbino Channel, T. W. Heitmann, Kang Yu, C. Song, M P. Defeo, B.L.T. Plourde
Physics - All Scholarship
We have developed a picovoltmeter using a Nb dc Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) for measuring the flux-flow voltage from a small number of vortices moving through a submicron weak-pinning superconducting channel. We have applied this picovoltmeter to measure the vortex response in a single channel arranged in a circle on a Corbino disk geometry. The circular channel allows the vortices to follow closed orbits without encountering any sample edges, thus eliminating the influence of entry barriers.
