Hybrid Portfolio Optimization With Pca, Clustering, And The Barzilai-Borwein Method, Shin Chiew Kai, Yeing Pan Wei, Seng Sim Hong, Hou Chin Jia, Jia Lee Yap

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Portfolio optimization aims to balance risk and return by identifying an effective mix of assets. In this study, we integrate principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering for stock selection with the Barzilai–Borwein (BB) gradient method for portfolio optimization. Forty-eight U.S. stocks from the Kaggle fundamental stock dataset were initially collected, and 42 stocks were retained after preprocessing. Financial ratios from 2006 and adjusted closing prices from 2016–2017 were analysed, with one representative stock from each cluster selected using the Sharpe ratio. The BB method was then applied to determine optimal weights, ensuring full capital allocation without short selling. Among …

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Controlled double-diffusive Marangoni convection in a rotating nanofluid layer, heated from below, is studied. Various types of lower-upper boundary conditions, including free-free and rigid-free, are considered. The nanofluids model incorporates the mechanisms of Brownian motion and thermophoresis in nanofluids. The stability of the nanofluids model is analysed using a linear stability analysis based on the normal mode technique. The eigenvalue problem is numerically solved using the Galerkin technique and computational simulations are carried out using Maple software. The influences of several parameters are examined and presented graphically, including modified diffusivity ratio, nanoparticles concentration, solutal Rayleigh number and Soret effects. These …

Lru Caching Policy Based On Naïve Bayes Ml Algorithm In Collaborative Peer-To-Peer Systems For Network Bandwidth Utilization, Waheed Yasin

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Web caching offers several advantages, such as increasing cache hit rates, lowering the workload on origin servers, and minimizing network traffic. Nevertheless, limited cache capacity poses a major challenge in web caching systems. Moreover, repeatedly fetching same media objects from origin servers leads to unnecessary bandwidth consumption. Furthermore, traditional caching policies, including Least Recently Used (LRU), are vulnerable to cache pollution. This study introduces a collaborative caching policy based on the Naïve Bayes (NB) Machine Learning (ML) algorithm. The proposed policy exploits structured peer-to-peer architectures, allowing cache contents to be shared among peers to improve the efficiency of LRU web …

Examining The Relationship Between It Project Risk Management And Benefits Realized From It Project Implementation Within The Public Sector, Fredick Bitta, Robert Oboko, Christopher Chepken

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Information technology (IT) has become increasingly critical in today's digital world, supporting, sustaining, and driving growth in public organizations. The board of directors and senior management have traditionally delegated, disregarded, or avoided IT decisions. The majority of public sector organizations have realized that such a mindset is outdated and must be avoided. Being a foundation for effective enterprise governance, the IT risk management domain seeks to guarantee that a structure exists for identifying, analyzing, mitigating, monitoring and communicating an organization's IT risk to ensure successful IT project implementation. This research, therefore, sought to examine the relationship between risk management of …

A Conceptual Framework For Robust Few-Shot Learning: Integrating Unbalanced Optimal Transport And Self-Supervised Transformer Representations, Hayati Abd Rahman, Pang Yun

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Few-shot learning (FSL) aims to enable deep models to generalise from extremely limited labelled data, yet unstable metric matching, distribution imbalances, and weak structural representations in low-data regimes often constrain its performance. This paper proposes a conceptual framework that unifies metric-based similarity learning, Unbalanced Optimal Transport (UOT) via Unbalanced Sinkhorn Distance (USD), and self-supervised Transformer representations to conceptually address the theoretical and structural limitations of existing FSL approaches. The framework theoretically unifies distribution-aware USD matching, SSL-enhanced ViT/Swin feature representations, and metric-based inference within a coherent pipeline. This work aims to provide a theoretical foundation and research roadmap for future empirical …

Integration Of Vision-Language-Action Foundation Models For Adaptive Robotic Arm Control In Manufacturing, Nina C. Kanonye

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Industrial automation increasingly demands robots that can adapt to dynamic environments without extensive reprogramming. Traditional robotic systems perform well in structured, repetitive settings but struggle when workspace configurations change. Programming a robot for each new task requires specialized expertise and significant time, creating a barrier for small and medium manufacturers. While recent VLA models have demonstrated strong capabilities in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) agents, existing research has rarely focused on the complex and sequential manufacturing tasks for robotic handling, printing, sorting and assembling. This research investigates whether CogACT can be fine-tuned to perform a pick-and-place task on the Yahboom …

Architecture As Frozen Music: An Original Wind Ensemble Work Exploring Architectural Metaphors In Contemporary Music, Leighannah J. Turner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Architecture has long served as a source of inspiration for Western art music composers from the Early Renaissance through the Neoclassical period. While the relationship between music and architecture has been widely studied, much of the existing research focuses on traditional mediums such as the symphony orchestra. This project explores the concept of music as “frozen architecture” – introduced by Friedrich Schelling – and the metaphorical correlations as described by Vitruvius and Lupishko, applying these concepts to the contemporary medium of the wind ensemble through my original composition. My work integrates the architectural principles proposed by Vitruvius and Lupishko while …

Condition Monitoring Of Induction Motor Using Motor Current Signature Analysis, Francis Ikechukwu Obianke, Joseph Okhaifoh, Benjamin Akinloye Mar 2026

Condition Monitoring Of Induction Motor Using Motor Current Signature Analysis, Francis Ikechukwu Obianke, Joseph Okhaifoh, Benjamin Akinloye

Al-Bahir

Induction machines serve as the cornerstone and driving force of modern manufacturing and production systems. This research aims to monitor and analyse the operating performance of induction motors using motor current signature analysis (MCSA). MCSA is employed to process the current signal of a motor into a frequency spectrum, known as the current signature by applying the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm. The underlying principle is that vibration generated in a motor is closely related to the changes of the magnetic field density, and the induced voltage varies with the stator current.

A simulation model replicating the behaviour of an …

Empowering Educators With Generative Ai In Higher Education: Design Patterns For Visible Learning, Jeanne Charles Mar 2026

Empowering Educators With Generative Ai In Higher Education: Design Patterns For Visible Learning, Jeanne Charles

Essays in Education

A student submits a paper that reads smooth and confident. With generative AI, that polish no longer proves learning. Higher education now needs course designs that keep student thinking visible and assessable.

This literature review synthesizes 39 empirical studies (2024 through early 2026) on generative AI in higher education. It treats 22 learner-facing classroom studies as design cases and codes task type, permitted AI use, instructor guardrails, and measured outcomes. It uses the remaining studies to situate adoption, policy, and academic integrity risks.

Across the evidence, outcomes follow the design more than the tool. AI supports learning when it expands …

Advanced Manufacturing And Materials Of A Biomimetic Hoof For Space Robotics Applications, Benjamin Heckel Mar 2026

Advanced Manufacturing And Materials Of A Biomimetic Hoof For Space Robotics Applications, Benjamin Heckel

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Planetary surfaces often feature steep, uneven, and unpredictable terrain conditions that resemble some of the most challenging natural environments on Earth. In these terrestrial settings, certain animals have evolved to navigate complex landscapes with remarkable agility. One such example is the mountain goat, an animal whose hooves have evolved for stable and precise movement across rocky, inclined surfaces. This biological adaptation provides a useful model for improving robotic mobility in planetary exploration. This study draws inspiration from that natural adaptation to develop a bio-mimetic robotic hoof designed to enhance traction, durability, and adaptability for extraterrestrial exploration. By replicating the mechanical …

Low Temperature Plasma Simulation Using The Lattice Boltzmann Method, Shepard Summers, Christopher Anderson Mar 2026

Low Temperature Plasma Simulation Using The Lattice Boltzmann Method, Shepard Summers, Christopher Anderson

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Pulsed Low-Temperature Plasma (LTP) has become a subject of interest in various fields, including propulsion, material processing, and medical technology. LTP flows are challenging to accurately simulate due to their physical complexities and multiscale nature, spanning scales ranging from meters on the system level to nanoscale when investigating the interactions between ions and electrons. The conventional models for simulating LTP flow are not able to handle this wide range of scales in a computationally efficient manner. The Boltzmann method, which is rooted in kinetic theory rather than Newtonian, can efficiently tackle the multiscale properties of LTP flow by directly solving …

Yarkovsky Effect For Particles In Circumlunar Space, Rohith Vinnakota, Le Na Hoang Mar 2026

Yarkovsky Effect For Particles In Circumlunar Space, Rohith Vinnakota, Le Na Hoang

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The concept of Kessler Syndrome concerns the eventuality that increasing amounts of “space junk” in orbit around Earth will inhibit our ability to safely launch spacecraft from the surface of the planet into orbit and/or deep space. While countermeasures are slowly being taken for Earth, this is still an issue that persists for other celestial bodies. One solution that shows promise for solving this problem is utilization of the Yarkovsky Effect, which theorizes that objects in orbit are perturbated by photons as a result of illumination from sunlight. Our goal in this study is to review the feasibility of applying …

Translation As Divination: Translating Naomi Sím’S Emerald Orchid Love Letter, Will Buckingham Mar 2026

Translation As Divination: Translating Naomi Sím’S Emerald Orchid Love Letter, Will Buckingham

Living in Languages

Naomi Sím’s Taiwanese (Tâi-gí) language short story, "Emerald Orchid Love Letter" (Chhùi-Lân ê Chêng-Phoe 翠蘭ê情批) engages deeply with the questions of politics, language and religion in contemporary Taiwan. The plot of the story pivots around the central question of what language the gods speak. In the story, the narrator—caught between Taiwanese, Mandarin and English languages—finds a strange growth on her inside lip. The cure turns out to involve the sea goddess Má-chó͘, and a renewed commitment on the part of the narrator to the Taiwanese language. In this paper, I read the process of translating Sím’s story from Taiwanese to …

On The Extreme Complexity Of Certain Nearly Regular Graphs, Gregory P. Constantine, Gregory C. Magda Mar 2026

On The Extreme Complexity Of Certain Nearly Regular Graphs, Gregory P. Constantine, Gregory C. Magda

Theory & Applications of Graphs

The complexity of a graph is the number of its labeled spanning trees. It is demonstrated that the seven known triangle-free strongly regular graphs are graphs of maximal complexity among all graphs of the same order and degree; their complements are shown to be of minimal complexity. A generalization to nearly regular graphs with two distinct eigenvalues of the Laplacian is presented. Conjectures and applications of these results to biological problems on neuronal activity are described.

Cycle-Based Characterizations Of The Cycle Completable Graphs, Terry A. Mckee Mar 2026

Cycle-Based Characterizations Of The Cycle Completable Graphs, Terry A. Mckee

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Cycle completable graphs were originally defined to answer matrix completion problems and have since received diverse graph-theoretic descriptions, in spite of not directly mentioning cycles. This paper characterizes such graphs by their chordless cycles never having ``bridges'' (as defined in H.-J. Voss's 1991 monograph {\em Cycles and Bridges in Graphs\/}) that have more than two vertices of attachment in the cycle. This approach is then related to the well-studied, yet seemingly quite distinct, classes of chordal graphs and series-parallel graphs. This is done by allowing chords to be ``bridges'' that have exactly two vertices of attachment.
