Individuals And Populations: How Biology's Theory And Data Have Interfered With The Integration Of Development And Evolution, David S. Moore Dec 2008

Individuals And Populations: How Biology's Theory And Data Have Interfered With The Integration Of Development And Evolution, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Research programs in quantitative behavior genetics and evolutionary psychology have contributed to the widespread belief that some psychological characteristics can be “inherited” via genetic mechanisms. In fact, molecular and developmental biologists have concluded that while genetic factors contribute to the development of all of our traits, non-genetic factors always do too, and in ways that make them no less important than genetic factors. This insight demands a reworking of the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis, a theory that defined evolution as a process involving changes in the frequencies of genes in populations, and that envisioned no role for experiential factors now known …

Vocabulary Size, Background Characteristics, And Reading Skill Of Korean Intensive English Students, Nolan Weil Dec 2008

Vocabulary Size, Background Characteristics, And Reading Skill Of Korean Intensive English Students, Nolan Weil

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examines the relationship between breadth of vocabulary, background experiences in learning English and student skill in the reading of an academic text. The author used the Swansea Levels Tests to estimate vocabulary sizes and collected information on background characteristics via questionnaire from eleven Korean students enrolled in an Intensive English program and five Korean undergraduate students at Utah State University. Eight of the Intensive English students were subsequently trained in a think-aloud procedure and then completed a research task in which they read a 960-word essay. The task required the students to think aloud as they attempted to …

Indigenous Education Research

In 2008, over 16,000 Indigenous students and 13,000 non-Indigenous students located in 260 Australian schools were involved in an Indigenous language program. More than 80 different Indigenous languages were taught. This project sought to present practice which would strengthen the quality of Indigenous language programs in schools. The report consists of a literature review, a mapping exercise to document current practices relating to Indigenous languages in Australian schools, an analysis of existing models of teacher preparation, and six case studies of good practice examples.

A Mock Rhetoric: The Use Of Satire In First-Year Composition, Michael James Sobiech Dec 2008

A Mock Rhetoric: The Use Of Satire In First-Year Composition, Michael James Sobiech

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

On the eve of the Second World War, high school English teacher Leon Ormond writes about a minor skirmish he has with a history teacher over the pedagogical usefulness of wit. After telling her about his book, Laugh and Learn: The Art of Teaching with Humor, she tells him, “Only morons laugh.” Ormond goes on to describe her as one who exhibits “a countenance curiously reminiscent of an ancient Greek tragic mask”—she was “an exemplary member of the Cult of Pedagogic Pallbearers.” Although educators, historically, have often frowned upon humor, humorous writing—especially satirical writing—helps students understand the fundamentals of …

Bourdieu And American Legal Education: How Law Schools Reproduce Social Stratification And Class Hierarchy, Lucille A. Jewel Dec 2008

Bourdieu And American Legal Education: How Law Schools Reproduce Social Stratification And Class Hierarchy, Lucille A. Jewel

Scholarly Works

The American legal profession has long been organized along hierarchical lines, and in many instances, status inequalities between attorneys are based on perceived differences in attorneys' educational credentials. Relying upon the theories of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, this essay will discuss how American legal educational institutions operate to reproduce the stratification within the legal profession and within society as a whole.

American law schools are not equalizing institutions that erase all class differences among students to create a profession that awards all of its members a monolithic class status. By allocating professional status based on a system of educational tiers, …

Operating Under Erasure: Race/Language/Identity, Awad Ibrahim Dec 2008

Operating Under Erasure: Race/Language/Identity, Awad Ibrahim

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Based on a critical ethnographic research project, this paper is about the impact of becoming Black on ESL learning; that is, the interrelation between identity formation, identification, race, culture and second language learning. It contends that a group of French-speaking immigrant and refugee continental francophone African youths who are attending an urban Franco-Ontarian high school in south- western Ontario, Canada, enters, so to speak, a social imaginary, a discursive space in which they are already imagined, constructed, and thus treated as Blacks by hegemonic discourses and groups. This imaginary is directly implicated in whom they identify with (Black America), which …

No. 22: South African Government And Civil Society Responses To Zimbabwean Migration, Tara Poizer Dec 2008

No. 22: South African Government And Civil Society Responses To Zimbabwean Migration, Tara Poizer

Southern African Migration Programme

This policy brief discusses a key paradox in relation to Zimbabwean migration into South Africa. While Zimbabwean migration since 2000 has been the largest concentrated flow in South African history, South Africa’s reaction to this movement has been characterised by the attempt to continue with ‘business as usual’ and ‘no crisis’ responses.1 Compared with most other developed and developing countries, where an inflow of tens or hundreds of thousands of people is usually treated as a political crisis, such a non-response to over a million immigrants requires explanation.

The lack of commensurate responses is especially noticeable within the various departments …

Growing Fields Of Interest: Using An Expand And Reduce Strategy For Domain Model Extraction, Christopher Thomas, Pankaj Mehra, Roger Brooks, Amit P. Sheth Dec 2008

Growing Fields Of Interest: Using An Expand And Reduce Strategy For Domain Model Extraction, Christopher Thomas, Pankaj Mehra, Roger Brooks, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Domain hierarchies are widely used as models underlying information retrieval tasks. Formal ontologies and taxonomies enrich such hierarchies further with properties and relationships associated with concepts and categories but require manual effort; therefore they are costly to maintain, and often stale. Folksonomies and vocabularies lack rich category structure and are almost entirely devoid of properties and relationships. Classification and extraction require the coverage of vocabularies and the alterability of folksonomies and can largely benefit from category relationships and other properties. With Doozer, a program for building conceptual models of information domains, we want to bridge the gap between the vocabularies …

Historical Legacy Of Jesuits In China, Lawrence Fouraker Dec 2008

Historical Legacy Of Jesuits In China, Lawrence Fouraker

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"What is the meaning today of the missionary activities of the Society of Jesus in China? The attempt by members of the Society of Jesus to convert Chinese to Christianity from the late-16th to early-18th centuries was part of the Catholic Reformation’s missionary expansion around the world. Was the Jesuit mission also part and parcel of an expansionist Western imperialism, or did it rather reflect a humanistic universalism?2 Obviously, there are some aspects of both, but on balance, the conversion of Chinese in this era is …

Introduction: Telling Places, Nicholas Beech

RIT Digital Archives

I don’t think it is desirable, or possible, in this introduction to a small selection of papers (four) from the conference Telling Places: Narrative and identity in art and architecture, to attempt a complete summary of its proceedings (which included twenty papers, including Davison 2008). Along with the paper presentations, the conference included an exhibition of work produced in the PhD programs at the Bartlett School of Architecture and the Slade School of Fine Art, curated by Christiana Ioannou, Christos Papastergiou, and Laura Cinti; a workshop (that included, most disconcertingly and significantly, actual singing by academics) provided by the artist …

Transformative Mediation: Empowering The Oppressed Voices Of A Multicultural City To Foster Strong Democracy., Arby Aiwazian Dec 2008

Transformative Mediation: Empowering The Oppressed Voices Of A Multicultural City To Foster Strong Democracy., Arby Aiwazian

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Transformative mediation’s promotion of understanding, acceptance, and inclusion fosters a purer democracy by cultivating the individual self-empowerment of traditionally disempowered individuals that is vital to strong and robust democracies. By transforming relationships and empowering individuals, transformative mediation helps foster an arena for self-governance, which inevitably leads to self-empowerment and a purer democracy. Optimistically, as more individuals are empowered through transformative mediation, communities plagued with violence, hatred, and misunderstanding could also reap the benefits by fostering acceptance, communication, inclusion, and understanding. The nature of the United States’ current passive and procedural democratic system further perpetuates inequality by placing political power solely …

The Consciousness Of Damnation : A Hermeneutical Phenomenology Of The Fall Of The Self In Matthew Lewis's "The Monk"., Becky Lee Meadows Dec 2008

The Consciousness Of Damnation : A Hermeneutical Phenomenology Of The Fall Of The Self In Matthew Lewis's "The Monk"., Becky Lee Meadows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When Ambrosio in Matthew Lewis's 1796 gothic masterpiece, The Monk , signs a contract relegating his soul to Satan and eternal damnation, he has reached the culmination of 442 pages of mental anguish, of his self wrestling with his conscience to overcome what philosopher Paul Ricoeur terms the "servile will" (The Symbolism of Evil 151). In the novel, Ambrosio, a monk the reader discovers has become the pawn of Satan, hurls himself down a path to damnation in consciousness, a phenomenological path that leads to the damnation of his own self. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore this …

Moody Blues: The Social Web, Tagging, And Nontextual Discovery Tools For Music, Susannah Cleveland, Gwen Evans Dec 2008

Moody Blues: The Social Web, Tagging, And Nontextual Discovery Tools For Music, Susannah Cleveland, Gwen Evans

University Libraries Faculty Publications

A common thread in discussions about the Next Generation Catalog is that it should incorporate features beyond the mere textual, one-way presentation of data. At the same time, traditional textual description of music materials often prohibits effective use of the catalog by specialists and nonspecialists alike. Librarians at Bowling Green State University have developed the HueTunes project to explore already established connections between music, color, and emotion, and incorporate those connections into a nontextual discovery tool that could enhance interdisciplinary as well as specialist use of the catalog.

Itools A Facilitator’S Tool Kit Of Deliberate Intuition Tools, Tara L. Bissett

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

The purpose of this master’s project was to contribute to Janice Francisco and Cyndi Burnett’s (2008) research on deliberate intuition within the Creative Problem Solving Thinking Skills Model (CPSTSM) framework developed by Puccio, Murdock & Mance (2007). 16 intuition tools, “itools” (Francisco & Burnett, 2008) aimed at tapping into deliberate intuition as an integral component of the creative process, were collected, described, developed, and grouped into 4 categories; Quick & Dirty, Artsy Fartsy, Yellow Brick Road, and Abracadabra. The importance of setting intention was highlighted as an integral component of any itool, as well as the need for more research …

An Assessment Of The Institutional Vision Of Catholic Colleges And Universities, Robert Abelman, Amy Dalessandro Dec 2008

An Assessment Of The Institutional Vision Of Catholic Colleges And Universities, Robert Abelman, Amy Dalessandro

Journal of Catholic Education

Institutional vision is a philosophical template”a concept of what, at its best, a college or university is like and the kinds of human beings that institution is attempting to cultivate. A content analysis of the institutional vision of a nation-wide sample of Catholic schools was performed and key linguistic components found to constitute a well conceived, viable, and easily diffused mission and vision were isolated. The prevalence of these components in comparison to other types of religious schools and secular four-year institutions is discussed. Findings suggest that Catholic schools are vision-driven institutions that communicate their priorities and defining characteristics by …

Indigenous Peoples And Gene Disputes, Debra Harry Dec 2008

Indigenous Peoples And Gene Disputes, Debra Harry

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Wary from decades exploitation in the name of science, Indigenous peoples typically approach externally-generated research with caution, and for good reason. Indigenous peoples have been on the receiving end of research carried out in insensitive, and sometimes, harmful ways. Research has historically been a top-down, outside-in process, with Indigenous peoples serving merely as research subjects, with little opportunity for meaningful participation or benefit from the outcomes of the research. Over the past two decades, with the advent of the Human Genome Project and other genetic research projects, there has been a corresponding increase in genetic research projects that put Indigenous …

Urban Catholic High Schools And Disadvantaged Females, Corinne R. Merrit Dec 2008

Urban Catholic High Schools And Disadvantaged Females, Corinne R. Merrit

Journal of Catholic Education

The purpose of this study was to discover the life experiences of disadvantaged female graduates of urban Catholic high schools and what they say about the capacity of Catholic education to meet their academic, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Based on narrative inquiry, this study was conducted using a series of in-depth, semistructured interviews to elicit the life experiences of 5 participants. Twelve common personal characteristics emerged directly from the narratives of the participants and provided the backdrop for two patterns: (a) the importance of education, and (b) the importance of relationships. This study found the high school experiences met …

Unsupervised Indexing Of Medline Articles Through Graph-Based Ranking, Jorge R. Herskovic Dec 2008

Unsupervised Indexing Of Medline Articles Through Graph-Based Ranking, Jorge R. Herskovic

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The biomedical literature is extensively catalogued and indexed in MEDLINE. MEDLINE indexing is done by trained human indexers, who identify the most important concepts in each article, and is expensive and inconsistent. Automating the indexing task is difficult: the National Library of Medicine produces the Medical Text Indexer (MTI), which suggests potential indexing terms to the indexers. MTI’s output is not good enough to work unattended. In my thesis, I propose a different way to approach the indexing task called MEDRank. MEDRank creates graphs representing the concepts in biomedical articles and their relationships within the text, and applies graph-based ranking …
