Redefining The Apartheid Of American History: A Middle School History Curriculum, John Scott Sandberg
All Graduate Projects
After more than half a century of efforts to address the historical educational chasm between marginalized groups it has become obvious that the need for culturally sensitive and inclusive curriculums need to be developed. This project is intended to assist educators take the first steps into the multicultural arena or provide a vehicle for curriculum incorporation. Sample curriculum is provided as an illustration of classroom practice and cultural inclusion. Student and educator roles are defined as well as activities, and assessment methods are described and outlined with links to curriculum content, Washington State's Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Classroom Based …

Improving Communication About Mathematics Through Vocabulary And Writing, Kelly Georgius
Improving Communication About Mathematics Through Vocabulary And Writing, Kelly Georgius
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Master of Arts in Teaching, Summative Projects
In this action research study, where the subjects were my 6th grade mathematics students, I investigated the impact of direct vocabulary instruction on their communication and achievement. I strategically implemented the addition of vocabulary study into each lesson over a four-month time period. The students practiced using vocabulary in verbal discussions, review activities, and in mathematical problem explanations. I discovered that a majority of students improved their overall understanding of mathematical concepts based on an analysis of the data I collected. I also found that in general, students felt that knowing the definition of mathematical words was important and that …

A Study Of The Summarization Of Word Problems, Tara Schwanebeck
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Master of Arts in Teaching, Summative Projects
This action research investigates my sixth grade mathematics students’ ability to solve word problems after instruction and practice using a specific word problem summarization worksheet. The worksheet was designed to break down word problems into smaller parts, helping students comprehend them and, in turn, find success that would enhance their confidence and ability to successfully solve word problems. The worksheets each had a different type of word problem, such as one-step, hidden information, or extra information. The final worksheet consisted of a mixed review of each type of word problem previously practiced in class. Using different types of data collection …

A Self-Organizing Neural Model For Multimedia Information Fusion, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Kia-Yan Woon, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a self-organizing network model for the fusion of multimedia information. By synchronizing the encoding of information across multiple media channels, the neural model known as fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART) generates clusters that encode the associative mappings across multimedia information in a real-time and continuous manner. In addition, by incorporating a semantic category channel, fusion ART further enables multimedia information to be fused into predefined themes or semantic categories. We illustrate the fusion ART’s functionalities through experiments on two multimedia data sets in the terrorist domain and show the viability of the proposed approach.

Timeline Prediction Framework For Iterative Software Engineering Projects With Changes, Kay Berkling, Georgios Kiragiannis, Armin Zundel, Subhajit Datta
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Even today, software projects still suffer from delays and budget overspending. The causes for this problem are compounded when the project team is distributed across different locations and generally attributed to the decreasing ability to communicate well (due to cultural, linguistic, and physical distance). Many projects, especially those with off-shoring component, consist of small iterations with changes, deletions and additions, yet there is no formal model of the flow of iterations available. A number of commercially available project prediction tools for projects as a whole exist, but the model adaptation process by iteration, if it exists, is unclear. Furthermore, no …

Cultural Relics, Intellectual Property, And Intangible Heritage, Peter K. Yu
Faculty Scholarship
In recent years, the protection of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions has received widespread international attention. In 2003, delegates of 190 countries adopted the Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Two years later, the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions was adopted under the auspices of UNESCO. In 2007, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. In addition, there are active developments to strengthen protection of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions in the areas of international trade, intellectual property, and biological diversity. Taken …
Securities Fraud, Recidivism, And Deterrence, Jayne W. Barnard
Securities Fraud, Recidivism, And Deterrence, Jayne W. Barnard
Faculty Publications
Legal scholars have expended considerable energy on the study of high-level securities fraud violators-Ken Lay, Bernie Ebbers, Dennis Kozlowski, etc. There has been little attention, however, to the perpetrators of "retail" securities fraud-the con artists who sell bogus stock over the Internet, orchestrate elaborate pump-and-dump schemes, and create a never-ending array of purportedly "risk free" investment opportunities. Collectively, and in a cruel mockery of capitalism, these offenders extract hundreds of millions dollars from investors each year. In this article, Professor Barnard examines this group of offenders, focusing particularly on those who recidivate-often moving from state to state and scheme to …
Academic Writing And The Pedagogical Practices Of Effective Teachers, Thomas Devere Wolsey Edd
Academic Writing And The Pedagogical Practices Of Effective Teachers, Thomas Devere Wolsey Edd
Dissertations
Composition, particularly when academic register is required, is a complex task. Because cognitive flexibility theory explains how humans can spontaneously restructure knowledge and adapt to situational demands, it is ideally suited to the ill-structured domain of transactional writing. Global aspects related to paragraph and whole-text structure and local operations related to word and sentence-level features define academic writing. A mixed-methods design used quantitative methods for investigation of five corpora of 10th grade students' work. Qualitative methods were used to explore the means teachers used in promoting academic writing and the interactions they intended to promote via teaching cues, including prompts. …

Screenplay Visualization: Concepts And Practice, Stewart Mckie
Screenplay Visualization: Concepts And Practice, Stewart Mckie
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
A typical feature film screenplay goes through many development iterations before the original story idea becomes the audio-visual movie we experience. As the screenplay is developed it becomes more complex and may involve an ever-larger group of "content stakeholders" who have a need for different perspectives on the content of the screenplay. Here I discuss four conceptual archetypes for analyzing and visualizing the textual content of a screenplay: Circular, linear, rollercoaster and nodal. I show examples of support for screenplay analysis and visualization in the current generation of screenwriting software and I also suggest how these visualizations and others may …

Reading Comprehension, Figurative Language Instruction, And The Turkish English Language Learner, Barbara C. Palmer, Ebru M. Bilgili, Arzu Gungor, Susan H. Taylor, Judith T. Leclere
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the Turkish-speaking population in the United States increased significantly in the 1990s and has risen steadily over time. Today, the highest concentration is located in the states of New York, California, New Jersey, and Florida. Kaya (2003) reported a geographical dispersion across the U.S., from New York to Alaska, with the wealthiest living in Florida. Turkish students make up the ninth largest student population in the U.S. and the largest percentage of students compared to their homeland population. This article identifies and explores many of these challenges by observing the transition of Hakan, a …

Syncretism In Narrativity, Visuality And Tactility: A Case Study Of Information Visualization Concerning A News Media Event, Ashley Holmes
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article re-examines the appropriateness of a conceptual framework based on the semiotic scholarship of Greimas and Courtés which Margaret Morse championed as being suitable for analysis of television and new media. That framework is supplemented with the suggestion that narrative, visual and tactile modes of communication involve syncretism. In a case study of information visualization examples produced for Australian news media during a mine collapse tragedy and rescue at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania in 2006 this idea is used to identify communicative qualities potentially inherent in traditional print and television and emergent new media visualization techniques.
Just For The Hell Of It: A Comparison Of Two Taboo-Term Constructions, J. Hoeksema, Donna Jo Napoli
Just For The Hell Of It: A Comparison Of Two Taboo-Term Constructions, J. Hoeksema, Donna Jo Napoli
Linguistics Faculty Works
The two English constructions exemplified in Let's get the hell out of here (type G) and They beat the hell out of him (type B) differ both syntactically and semantically, but in both the taboo expression has the force of an intensifier. History (through a corpus investigation) reveals that the B-construction started as a literal exorcism (beat the devil out of someone), where the hell substituted for the devil, and semantic bleaching ultimately made the literal sense give way to simple emphasis, with any taboo term jumping in. The G-construction may have developed simultaneously, always as an intensifier--or, perhaps, later, …

X Is A Journey: Embodied Simulation In Metaphor Interpretation, L. David Ritchie
X Is A Journey: Embodied Simulation In Metaphor Interpretation, L. David Ritchie
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay compares simulation-based accounts of metaphor processing recently proposed by Gibbs (2006a) and Ritchie (2006), using examples of metaphors based on the metaphor vehicle "journey" from four different texts. From analysis of these different examples, it is concluded that simulation may come into play at different levels, depending on the metaphor and the context in which it is used. Further, it is suggested that the imaginative simulation of the object or action named by a metaphor vehicle, proposed by Gibbs, incorporates a partial subset of detail-level perceptual simulators. This leads to the proposal that the two models describe cognitive …

Perceptually Motivated Wavelet Packet Transform For Bioacoustic Signal Enhancement, Yao Ren, Michael T. Johnson, Jidong Tao
Dr. Dolittle Project: A Framework for Classification and Understanding of Animal Vocalizations
A significant and often unavoidable problem in bioacoustic signal processing is the presence of background noise due to an adverse recording environment. This paper proposes a new bioacoustic signal enhancement technique which can be used on a wide range of species. The technique is based on a perceptually scaled wavelet packet decomposition using a species-specific Greenwood scale function. Spectral estimation techniques, similar to those used for human speech enhancement, are used for estimation of clean signal wavelet coefficients under an additive noise model. The new approach is compared to several other techniques, including basic bandpass filtering as well as classical …

Transformations With Tai Chi: The Experience Of Community-Dwelling Tai Chi Practitioners, Sunny Yim Alperson Phd
Dissertations
While Tai Chi practice has dramatically increased across the U.S., its mechanism is unknown, and overall understanding of the phenomenon is lacking. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of community-dwelling Tai Chi practitioners through a qualitative study, detailing its social and personal appeal, the reasons for their continued involvement, its symbolic meanings, and its impact on their lives. Utilizing the grounded theory method and dimensional analysis, in-depth interview data from 23 practitioners, aged 49-82 were audio-recorded, transcribed, coded and analyzed to derive a grounded theory. A theoretical model, transformation with moving meditation was developed, reflecting the …
