Sentence Carried Out, A. Anil
Word Ways
Many well known proverbs, quotes and expressions have entered out vocabularies in a foreshortened, hence inaccurate, form. I here set the record straight by revealing the original, complete sentences.
Comparative Homophonic Trios, A. Anil
Comparative Homophonic Trios, A. Anil
Word Ways
"Trios" are thoughts expressed by three related words. They may be phrases, sentences, conversations, miniature poems ("triodes"), three pieces of a single word, etc. The three words may be related in any number of ways - homophones, anagrams, word ladders, other logological relations, rhyme, alliteration, repetition. Here's a special type, in the irreverant style of gross grocer grossest. You'll quickly see what I'm up to. It's artificial, sure, but it created the scaffolding for some trios I thought you might enjoy.

It has been reputed that the continent of Atlantis was lost beneath the sea and there are historical references to the lost city of the Incas. Mindful of these occurrences, each of the twenty-five examples below represents what has been left behind when a world city has disappeared from the beginning, end or middle of a word en toto.
Fibonacci Words: "Howl, Sex Orgy Poet!", A. Anil
Fibonacci Words: "Howl, Sex Orgy Poet!", A. Anil
Word Ways
No, not a direct quote from Leonardo Fibonacci of Thirteenth Century Florence, just words based on translating his famous number sequence into letters, with A-Z = 1-26, 27-52, etc. There are two types of Fibonacci words, "natural" and "arbitrary".
Etc, David Morice, Susan Thorpe
Etc, David Morice, Susan Thorpe
Word Ways
In this article, the reader will witness a years-long journey towards logological discovery. It began with a single word that seemed to be the only member of a specific class of anagrams. Then a second example was found. And now, like the little Dutch boy who put his finger into the hole in the dike, we pulled our fingers out, the dike broke and the wordplay poured all over us. We were in the middle of a language flood, and we'd like to invite you to "come on in, the water's fine".

Another Unidictionary Nine-Square, A. Ross Eckler
Another Unidictionary Nine-Square, A. Ross Eckler
Word Ways
The November 1991 Word Ways exhibited a nine-square by Eric Albert with all of its words contained in a single dictionary (Webster's Second Unabridged), the first one of its kind to be discovered. Can this feat be duplicated with words only from the Oxford English Dictionary? At least two logologists have tried, with varying degrees of success. In the February 1997 Word Ways Richard Sabey presented the first square given below, claiming that it consisted entirely of OED words.
Digital Diversions, Susan Thorpe
Digital Diversions, Susan Thorpe
Word Ways
Letter digitalization converts the letters of a word into their alphanumerical values (A=1, B=2 ... Z=26) and then breaks down the barriers between and within the resulting numbers to reveal a string of digits. Thus the word WORD 23, 15, 18, 4 has the digit string 2315184. Digitalized words are interesting for numerous reasons.

Amoebic Charades, Susan Thorpe
Amoebic Charades, Susan Thorpe
Word Ways
Logological charades occur when a word is split into two or more words which make a phrase. Thus BESTRIDE - BEST RIDE and NOTABLE - NOT ABLE are charades. Occasionally, the original word together with the words into which it divides all make a phrase: BITTERN BIT TERN.

Effects Of Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices On The Literacy Learning Of Latino Students, Miriam Elizabeth Stroder
Effects Of Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices On The Literacy Learning Of Latino Students, Miriam Elizabeth Stroder
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Raising scholastic achievement of diverse and struggling students as well as narrowing the academic achievement gap between students from mainstream and diverse backgrounds seems to be essentially dependent on educators’ personal knowledge, perspectives, and definitions regarding the terms multicultural education and equity pedagogy. Research studies confirm that addressing student’s culture, language, and social status with appreciation, inclusion, and sensitivity increases their academic successes. In classrooms, negative perceptions often maintained by educators about students perpetuate the false belief that diverse learners are unable to or struggle to grasp new learning. This ten-week qualitative study examined teachers’ perceptions as well as implementations …

Each of the thirty words listed below has resulted from the removal of the same three-letter name from the end and the beginning of two other words and running the remaining letters together. As an illustration, if we were to split the word CREDO between its first and second letters, the insertion of the name ALF would produce CALF and ALFREDO.

Agreement And Group Attraction In Face-To-Face And Computer-Mediated Group Discussions, Krishnamurti Murniadi
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Topics within small-group communication have been explored in many contexts, such as work group, organizational meeting, or online network. This area of discipline is considered crucial because this type of communication assimilates interpersonal relations within a social setting. Two elements that largely affect small-group communication dynamics are anonymity and social identity. This research invokes previous research in anonymity and social identity within small-group communication pertaining to the level of agreement and the level of group attraction through a series of experiments.
Anonymity in small-group communication context is defined as a condition where the group members are not identifiable. To create …
The Role Of Political Discourse In Conflict Transformation: Evidence From Northern Ireland, Katy Hayward
The Role Of Political Discourse In Conflict Transformation: Evidence From Northern Ireland, Katy Hayward
Peace and Conflict Studies
This article introduces this volume by constructing a model for analysing political discourse as an instrument of conflict and peace, drawing on evidence from the Northern Ireland case. It identifies three processes, or stages, in a peace process in which political discourse can play a unique and crucial role: (i) the construction of a (conceptual) framework within which negotiations can take place, (ii) the facilitation of agreement between moderate and extreme positions, and (iii) the forging of common ground. The motivating thesis of this research is that discourse analysis is a vital resource for deepening our knowledge of why, how …
The Maintenance Of Republican Ideology And Tactics In The Discourses Of Ira Former Prisoners, Peter Shirlow, Jonathan Tonge, James W. Mcauley
The Maintenance Of Republican Ideology And Tactics In The Discourses Of Ira Former Prisoners, Peter Shirlow, Jonathan Tonge, James W. Mcauley
Peace and Conflict Studies
The debate concerning ideology and ideological shifts during peace-building in Northern Ireland has generally failed to account for the attitudes and opinions of former combatants concerning the nature and meaning of discursively constructed identities and political strategies. This invisibility is peculiar in that debates concerning ideological shifts have been driven by academic analysis or by those former combatants who maintain that the Irish peace process is paralleled by core ideological abandonment. The material presented within this article indicates that former Provisional Irish Republican prisoners do not view the peace process as involving ideological ditching but instead that their commitment to …
Experience, Reflect, Critique: The End Of The “Learning Cycles” Era, Jayson O. Seaman
Experience, Reflect, Critique: The End Of The “Learning Cycles” Era, Jayson O. Seaman
Kinesiology
According to prevailing models, experiential learning is by definition a stepwise process beginning with direct experience, followed by reflection, followed by learning. It has been argued, however, that stepwise models inadequately explain the holistic learning processes that are central to learning from experience, and that they lack scientific or philosophical foundations. Criticism also centers on the way complex cultural, social, and physical processes during experience and learning are reduced to a rational, excessively cognitive, individual phenomenon. This article reviews this criticism and adds a historical dimension to the analysis, concluding that existing cyclic models might be better valued for their …
