Examining Neurophysiological Evidence Of Age-Related Interactions Of Sensory And Cognitive Processes During Speech Processing, Cady Kristen Block

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study sought to examine the contribution of sensory and cognitive factors on speech processing as evidenced by ERP measures and to find support for the Sensory Cognitive Interaction Theory (SCIT) and the Effortfulness Hypothesis in that older adults. who experience sensory deficits with normal aging. must put forth increased effort during early sensory stages of speech processing that may compromise subsequent semantic performance and recall of information. In the present investigation. younger and older adults performed a sentence verification task at low and high presentation levels (PL). Accuracy and response time to sentence verifications were assessed along with …

Reading Outcomes Of Pre-Literate 3rd-Grade Students After Two Years Of Combined Reading Classroom Instruction And Individualized Intervention Or Classroom Instruction, Jon T. Lopez Oct 2008

Reading Outcomes Of Pre-Literate 3rd-Grade Students After Two Years Of Combined Reading Classroom Instruction And Individualized Intervention Or Classroom Instruction, Jon T. Lopez

Student Work

This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a combination regular classroom reading and reading reteaching approach to teaching reading to pre-literate 3rd-grade students who were determined to be below proficient readers (n = 14) compared to the effectiveness of regular classroom reading instruction alone provided to 3rd-grade readers ( n = 14) determined to have barely proficient pre-literate skills. Barely proficient and below proficient reading level designations were determined by psychometrically derived cutscores developed in order to minimize classification error. This study found that although students on both sides of the cutscore made achievement gains in reading, gains …

Being True To The Text: From Genesis To Harry Potter, Paul Flesher Oct 2008

Being True To The Text: From Genesis To Harry Potter, Paul Flesher

Journal of Religion & Film

When a book is made into a film, journalists often ask experts, “How accurate is it?” This usually generates a list of “errors” and ends in a negative judgment on the film’s quality. This is the wrong question. Instead, one should explore what the changes to the story mean, or, even more significantly, they should ask, how are a film’s additions, deletions, and other narrative changes combined with its accurate portrayals?

This essay begins by presenting an ancient mode of translation that interwove accurate, literal translation with additions and alterations to create a new rendering in which the changes were …

Dead Men Don’T Lie: Sacred Texts In Jim Jarmusch’S Dead Man And Ghost Dog: Way Of The Samurai, Melissa Anne-Marie Curley Oct 2008

Dead Men Don’T Lie: Sacred Texts In Jim Jarmusch’S Dead Man And Ghost Dog: Way Of The Samurai, Melissa Anne-Marie Curley

Journal of Religion & Film

In 1995, American auteur Jim Jarmusch released his experimental western Dead Man. In 1999, Jarmusch released Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, which played with the genres of the samurai picture and the mafia movie. In this paper, I argue that these two films share a single narrative, and that narrative is about books and what books can do. Taking up Mircea Eliade’s notion of the sacred text as a manual for recovering primordial time, I suggest that the protagonists of both films should be understood as Eliade’s “religious man.”

The Effect Of Caregiver Question Types On Disruptive Behavior In Dementia Patients, Cynthia I. Lofton Oct 2008

The Effect Of Caregiver Question Types On Disruptive Behavior In Dementia Patients, Cynthia I. Lofton

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals in the later stages of dementia could benefit from their caregivers' use of language components that would assist them in gaining access to their emotional memories that had been developed throughout a lifetime of experiences. Participants in the study included 10 long-term care residents with a diagnosis of moderate-to-late stage dementia, probable Alzheimer's disease, and who were vocally disruptive. Thirty caregivers who interacted with the residents also participated in the study. The caregivers' responses to the vocally disruptive individuals were categorized as statements or questions. The language forms of caregiver …

The Power Of ‘When I Was Your Age’: Research On Parental Narratives And Their Influence On Cognitive Dissonance In Children, Darci C. Adams Oct 2008

The Power Of ‘When I Was Your Age’: Research On Parental Narratives And Their Influence On Cognitive Dissonance In Children, Darci C. Adams

Masters Theses

Parents are continually looking for correct and effective ways to discipline and instruct their children. Often, parents will tell a personal narrative beginning with “when I was your age” to demonstrate to their children the appropriate way to think and behave. This thesis asks three research questions: What are the common themes in parental narratives that young adults remember in relation to instruction or discipline? How does the narrative structure demonstrate narrative coherence and fidelity? What do young adults self-report about the impact of the parental narrative on their cognitive dissonance? Through a content analysis of eighty completed surveys by …

Painting A Moving Train: Adding ‘Postmodern’ To The Taxonomy Of The Law, Adam Todd Oct 2008

Painting A Moving Train: Adding ‘Postmodern’ To The Taxonomy Of The Law, Adam Todd

School of Law Faculty Publications

This article proposes that certain laws or forms of law can be characterized as postmodern because they, like their counterparts in literature or architecture, share similar attributes. Consistent with postmodernism's rejection of modernism, these laws appear to defy the modernist attributes of unitary core principles or singular meaning and stasis. Instead, these postmodern laws are: fragmentary, decentralized, uncertain and allow a multiplicity of interpretations; they reject master-narratives and embrace paradox; they are grounded or rooted in daily life; and are also connected to the internet, cyber-space and high technology.

The identification and characterization of certain laws as postmodern have the …

Existential Temporality As Fore-Ignorance: Implications For Divine Foreknowledge, David Pensgard Oct 2008

Existential Temporality As Fore-Ignorance: Implications For Divine Foreknowledge, David Pensgard

Masters Theses

Investigation into the nature of time is commonly taken to be a necessary precursor to the study of God's temporal status. These studies involve metaphysical concerns within the philosophy of time that focus on the logical structure of tensed statements about the future. Taking a different approach, this paper investigates the nature of temporality, rather than time, and proceeds via a phenomenological methodology. This often-overlooked methodology, it is argued, is preeminent over the metaphysical methodology. When the results of the two methods conflict the phenomenological methodology should dominate discussion. Proceeding with the more powerful method, it is argued that temporality, …

Problem-Based Educational Games: Connections, Prescriptions, And Assessment, Andrew Walker, Brett E. Shelton Oct 2008

Problem-Based Educational Games: Connections, Prescriptions, And Assessment, Andrew Walker, Brett E. Shelton

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

The overwhelming success of the commercial game market has brought increased attention to emerging work in educational game design. Much of the existing work in educational games a strong similarity to the field of Problem-Based Learning (PBL), which has a rich history of conceptual literature as well as empirical investigations. Despite apparent similarities between the two fields, there has been no formal effort to explore the connections between them. This conceptual paper examines the basic tenants of PBL with an eye toward making prescriptive recommendations for the design and use of problem-based educational games. Examples within existing educational games are …

The Relationship Between Stigma Consciousness And Variables Of Well-Being Among Foreign-Born Faculty Members, Sharnail D. Bazemore Oct 2008

The Relationship Between Stigma Consciousness And Variables Of Well-Being Among Foreign-Born Faculty Members, Sharnail D. Bazemore

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between stigma consciousness and positive feelings toward the university, feelings of well-being, loneliness, and teaching effectiveness among foreign-born faculty members employed by American institutions of higher education. Participants included 162 foreign born faculty members who represented 12 urban East coast universities. Participants completed a series of online questionnaires that assessed levels of stigma consciousness, feelings toward the university, self-esteem, well-being, loneliness, and self-perceived teaching effectiveness. We hypothesized that stigma consciousness would contribute unique variance to positive feelings toward the university, feelings of well-being, loneliness, and teaching effectiveness. Four hierarchical regression …

Fusing Semantics, Observability, Reliability And Diversity Of Concept Detectors For Video Search, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2008

Fusing Semantics, Observability, Reliability And Diversity Of Concept Detectors For Video Search, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effective utilization of semantic concept detectors for large-scale video search has recently become a topic of intensive studies. One of main challenges is the selection and fusion of appropriate detectors, which considers not only semantics but also the reliability of detectors, observability and diversity of detectors in target video domains. In this paper, we present a novel fusion technique which considers different aspects of detectors for query answering. In addition to utilizing detectors for bridging the semantic gap of user queries and multimedia data, we also address the issue of "observability gap" among detectors which could not be directly inferred …

A Sawtooth Waveform Inspired Pitch Estimator For Speech And Music, Arturo Camacho, John G. Harris Sep 2008

A Sawtooth Waveform Inspired Pitch Estimator For Speech And Music, Arturo Camacho, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A sawtooth waveform inspired pitch estimator (SWIPE) has been developed for speech and music. SWIPE estimates the pitch as the fundamental frequency of the sawtooth waveform whose spectrum best matches the spectrum of the input signal. The comparison of the spectra is done by computing a normalized inner product between the spectrum of the signal and a modified cosine. The size of the analysis window is chosen appropriately to make the width of the main lobes of the spectrum match the width of the positive lobes of the cosine. SWIPE′, a variation of SWIPE, utilizes only the first and prime …

Word Sense Disambiguation In Biomedical Ontologies With Term Co-Occurrence Analysis And Document Clustering, Bill Andreopoulos, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Michael Schroeder Sep 2008

Word Sense Disambiguation In Biomedical Ontologies With Term Co-Occurrence Analysis And Document Clustering, Bill Andreopoulos, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Michael Schroeder

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

With more and more genomes being sequenced, a lot of effort is devoted to their annotation with terms from controlled vocabularies such as the GeneOntology. Manual annotation based on relevant literature is tedious, but automation of this process is difficult. One particularly challenging problem is word sense disambiguation. Terms such as |development| can refer to developmental biology or to the more general sense. Here, we present two approaches to address this problem by using term co-occurrences and document clustering. To evaluate our method we defined a corpus of 331 documents on development and developmental biology. Term co-occurrence analysis achieves an …

Hopi Nation: Essays on Indigenous Art, Culture, History, and Law

“It is a time to recall and to revitalize the good things of Hopi life and to celebrate Hopism.”

The Hopi people have retained their cultural life to perhaps a greater degree than most Indian peoples in the United States today. Customary practices which govern the pattern of life from birth to death for most Hopi are still carried out to a large extent.

The Hopi mesas are located in northeastern Arizona in the plateau country where the Hopi clans began gathering a millennium ago. The clans were not strangers to the land at that time, for many had passed …

Kachina dolls, those representations of the dancers who impersonate the supernatural kachinas, have captured the fancy of many art lovers for their colorfulness, the skill with which they are frequently made, and the variety of kachina forms they represent. To the collector, they are art objects, to be appreciated in terms of color, design and quality of craftsmanship. To the historian or museum curator, they are representative of the kachinas; as such, they are classified …

On The Green Vol. 37 No. 40 September 19, 2008, Gallaudet University

2001-2010

On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.
