Cosi Fan Tutte, Christine Seitz, Unlv Symphony Orchestra, Taras Krysa, Richard Brandon Brunson

Opera

Cosi fan tutte was commissioned by Emperor Joseph II after a revival of Le nozze di Figaro in August 1789. It is rumored that he asked Lorenzo Da Ponte to base the libretto on a recent Viennese scandal; although, the plot is not new to literary history. This opera buffa premiered in Vienna at the Burgtheater on 26 January 1790 and received five performances before the emperor's death on 20 February when all the theaters closed; five more followed from June to August.

Event Related Potentials Of Syntactic Language Processing In Two Children With Specific Language Impairment: A Case Study, Melissa Ann Willes

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the electrophysiological activity of two children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and two aged-matched peers while listening to syntactically correct sentences versus syntactically incorrect sentences. The study specifically analyzed the N400 and P600 components. The N400 component is a negative wave occurring approximately 400 ms post-stimulus and is elicited by semantically incorrect stimuli. The P600 component is a positivity that occurs approximately 600 ms post-stimulus and reflects processing of syntactically incorrect stimuli. The participants in the study included a 7-year-old child and a 9-year-old child with SLI and two age-matched peers with typically developing language. Each participant …

The Effect Of Regional Dialect On The Validity And Reliability Of Word Recognition Scores, Jamie Ann Garlick Mar 2008

The Effect Of Regional Dialect On The Validity And Reliability Of Word Recognition Scores, Jamie Ann Garlick

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of talker and listener dialect on the validity and reliability of word recognition scores from two sets of Mandarin speech audiometry materials. Four lists of bisyllabic words in Mainland Mandarin and Taiwan Mandarin dialects were administered to 16 participants of each dialect with normal hearing across two test sessions. The performance on materials presented in the native dialect was compared to performance on non-native dialect assessment to determine validity and reliability of test materials. Statistical analysis indicated significant differences between word recognition scores across test sessions, talker and listener dialect, …

The Effect Of Non-Native Dialect On Speech Recognition Threshold For Native Mandarin Speakers, Nathan Edward Richardson Mar 2008

The Effect Of Non-Native Dialect On Speech Recognition Threshold For Native Mandarin Speakers, Nathan Edward Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

Speech recognition thresholds are used for several clinical purposes, so it is important that they be accurate reflections of hearing ability. Variations in the acoustic signal may artificially decrease threshold scores, and such variations can result from being tested in a second dialect. Thirty-two native Mandarin-speaking subjects (sixteen from mainland China and sixteen from Taiwan) participated in speech recognition threshold testing in both dialects to see whether using non-native dialect test materials resulted in a significantly lower score. In addition, tests were scored by two interpreters, one from each dialect, to see whether the scorer's dialect resulted in a significantly …

Functional Imaging Of The Auditory Processing Applied To Speech Sounds, Roy D Patterson, Ingrid Johnsrude Mar 2008

Functional Imaging Of The Auditory Processing Applied To Speech Sounds, Roy D Patterson, Ingrid Johnsrude

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

In this paper, we describe domain-general auditory processes that we believe are prerequisite to the linguistic analysis of speech. We discuss biological evidence for these processes and how they might relate to processes that are specific to human speech and language. We begin with a brief review of (i) the anatomy of the auditory system and (ii) the essential properties of speech sounds. Section 4 describes the general auditory mechanisms that we believe are applied to all communication sounds, and how functional neuroimaging is being used to map the brain networks associated with domain-general auditory processing. Section 5 discusses recent …

Standard English Language Acquisition Among African American Vernacular English Speaking Adolescents: A Modified Guided Reading Study, Benjamin T. Lester Mar 2008

Standard English Language Acquisition Among African American Vernacular English Speaking Adolescents: A Modified Guided Reading Study, Benjamin T. Lester

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is an effort to contribute to the knowledge base concerning reading instruction for adolescent students who speak African American Vernacular English (AAVE), as well as their acquisition of Standard English (SE), by focusing on language structure during a modified approach to guided reading (MGR). Emphasis was placed on teaching the eight inflectional morphemes in SE, as well as other literacy strategies to AAVE speaking students. This intervention hypothesized that the teaching and learning of inflectional morphemes, in particular, would increase SE literacy acquisition. The intervention utilized formative experiment methodology and a quasi-experimental time series design. Data sources and …

The Conception Of Irony With Continual Reference To Kierkegaard: An Examination Of Ironic Play In Fear And Trembling, Julie Ann Parker Frederick Mar 2008

The Conception Of Irony With Continual Reference To Kierkegaard: An Examination Of Ironic Play In Fear And Trembling, Julie Ann Parker Frederick

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies the relationship of irony, as defined in Kierkegaard's The Concept of Irony to the text and subject of Fear and Trembling. Irony is interpreted in this thesis as negative space, which both binds and separates and which assumes meaning equal to or greater than the positive space that binds it. This definition applies to Kierkegaard's Socrates who lived ironically in the space between actuality and ideality. This thesis considers how Abraham also lived in ironic space and why ironic space is a prerequisite for faith. Unlike Socrates, Abraham did not stop with irony, but used irony to …

An Ontology Centric Architecture For Mediating Interactions In Semantic Web-Based E-Commerce Environments, Manoj Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

Information freely generated, widely distributed and openly interpreted is a rich source of creative energy in the digital age that we live in. As we move further into this irrevocable relationship with self-growing and actively proliferating information spaces, we are also finding ourselves overwhelmed, disheartened and powerless in the presence of so much information. We are at a point where, without domain familiarity or expert guidance, sifting through the copious volumes of information to find relevance quickly turns into a mundane task often requiring enormous patience. The realization of accomplishment soon turns into a matter of extensive cognitive load, serendipity …

Democracy Or Bust: Why Our Knowledge About What The Chinese Lack Is Really No Knowledge At All Mar 2008

Democracy Or Bust: Why Our Knowledge About What The Chinese Lack Is Really No Knowledge At All

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

An NPR report yesterday on the opening of a new session of the National People’s Congress in Beijing began with a disparaging comment to the effect that China is still a long way from democracy. As a statement of fact, this is no doubt both true and lamentable. As an attempt to convey useful knowledge to American listeners about China’s current situation, however, it seems to me nearly useless. Like many such statements, it is based on an implicit comparison between the Chinese political system and Western-style democracy. And like many such implicit comparisons, it falls victim to a particularly …

Meeting The Needs Of Ells: Acknowledging The Schism Between Esl/Bilingual And Mainstream Teachers And Illustrating That Problem's Remedy, Edmund T. Hamann Mar 2008

Meeting The Needs Of Ells: Acknowledging The Schism Between Esl/Bilingual And Mainstream Teachers And Illustrating That Problem's Remedy, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Nationwide, education researchers, policy makers, and school reformers agree that the education of English language learners (ELLs) is an increasingly important issue as (1) more students in more districts fit in that category (Ruiz-de-Velasco, 2005; Suarez-Orozco & Suarez-Orozco, 1999; Wortham, Murillo & Hamann, 2002); as (2) they, in aggregate, continue to fare less well than most other student populations (August & Hakuta, 1997; Callahan & Gindara, 2004; NCES, 1997); and as (3) policy compliance with the No Child Left Behind Act holds their schools accountable for their cumulative average yearly progress (Abedi, 2005; Crawford, 2004). There is also an emerging …

Understanding Secondary Students' Reading And Writing Records: A Study Of Curricula In Literacy Achievement, Kathleen M. Kinney Mar 2008

Understanding Secondary Students' Reading And Writing Records: A Study Of Curricula In Literacy Achievement, Kathleen M. Kinney

Theses and Graduate Projects

In accordance with the new federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, states, districts, schools, and educators must set and implement a plan that ensures all students are academically proficient in the areas of reading, math and science by the year 2014. According to The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), the "national average reading scores of 4th and 8th graders have varied little over time, though both were 2 points higher in 2005 than in 1992. However, the scores of 12th graders declined 6 points during this period" (Livingston, 2007, p.6). As part of this research, I …

The Globalization Of Human Rights Law: Why Do Human Rights Need International Law?, Filip Spagnoli Mar 2008

The Globalization Of Human Rights Law: Why Do Human Rights Need International Law?, Filip Spagnoli

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Essay examines the globalization of human rights law, a rather recent legal development which has occurred in two parallel ways: human rights have become part of most national constitutions and have been enshrined in widely accepted international treaties. The central question of this Essay is the utility of international law in the field of human rights protection. The conclusion is that ideally human rights protection should be a national matter, but in an imperfect world, with failing national protection, international human rights protection is a necessary alternative. This Essay examines how, in an imperfect world, international law can contribute …

Jurisdiction, Allegiance, And Consent: Revisiting The Forgotten Prong Of The Fourteenth Amendment’S Birthright Citizenship Clause In Light Of Terrorism, Unprecedented Modern Population Migrations, Globalization, And Conflicting Cultures, William S. Stevens

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Various questions lead me to this Comment. I began by asking what makes a nation? What grants sovereignty? What limits sovereignty? Does a border define a nation, or the nation define the border? Further, does a nation have a sovereign right to define and enforce a border? Is the border meant to include or exclude? Who is included, or excluded? Are we citizens by virtue of the border, or does something else define both citizenship and a border? What is citizenship? Exploring those questions, of course, will not fit in a single law review Comment. While I touch on some, …
