Worlds Of Music Apart: An Alternative Narrative Of The Fez Festival Of World Sacred Music, Adrian Stover May 2008

Worlds Of Music Apart: An Alternative Narrative Of The Fez Festival Of World Sacred Music, Adrian Stover

Music Department Honors Papers

The intention of this thesis is to describe how the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music generates a narrative of globalization that is largely outside the Western academic perspective. Even as the festival structures a hegemonic relationship between local elites who can afford concert tickets and those with less economic means who attend events on the periphery of the festival, local resistance to the festival is limited; it is controlled through a narrative that resonates with local, spiritual, and aesthetic values. My project is based on my experience as a participant observer during my internship at La Fondation Ésprit de …

Bullying In The Elementary And Middle School Levels, Caitrin O’Rourke May 2008

Bullying In The Elementary And Middle School Levels, Caitrin O’Rourke

Social Work Theses

Bullying can be defined as deliberately hurting someone emotionally or physically. Although bullying is a serious issue, at times, it is instigated by overprotective parents or the lack of resiliency in students. This research study, using pre-tests, a PowerPoint presentation and a book on bullying, and post-tests, was conducted in order to determine whether or not a presentation on bullying could educate students about bullying and assist in preventing it in the future. Findings indicate that an educational presentation on bullying did educate elementary school students on bullying (p<.05) but did not educate middle school students (p>.05). Findings also indicate that a presentation on bullying does not …

What Can You Remember? An Approach To Reading, Laura Lagemann, Allison Schulte May 2008

What Can You Remember? An Approach To Reading, Laura Lagemann, Allison Schulte

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Reading comprehension can be affected by the reading method used, whether this is reading silently, aloud, or being read to by another. Our study measures the impact different reading methods has on the overall comprehension of a given passage. Our 90 subjects consisted of 58 women and 35 men. Subjects were randomly placed into three groups, for each of the three reading method variables being measured. Each group read the same passage. Our hypotheses for the study were that subjects reading the passage silently will recall more information about the passage than if they are read aloud to, or if …

Transcending Westphalia: The Two Faces Of European Foreign Policy, Momchil A. Jelev May 2008

Transcending Westphalia: The Two Faces Of European Foreign Policy, Momchil A. Jelev

Political Science Honors Projects

Scholarship has tended to understand the European Union as either intergovernmental or supranational within the context of the Westphalian state system. This study begins with the assertion that the EU is a unique political entity that requires more flexible conceptions of world politics. I argue that the EU is structurally different in the economic and security domains of foreign policy. It is supranational in economic relations and intergovernmental in security issues. This is demonstrated through examining the EU policies on trade, aid, and intervention. I also highlight the weaknesses – democratic deficit, weak public opinion and lack of common identity …

Escaping The Gender Box: An Empirical Study Of Anxiety Experienced By English As A Second Language Learners, Alexandra Knapp May 2008

Escaping The Gender Box: An Empirical Study Of Anxiety Experienced By English As A Second Language Learners, Alexandra Knapp

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Studies have shown that, in general, anxiety in second-language learners debilitates their language acquisition capabilities and ultimate second language (L2) achievement. Such studies have also shown that gender has much to do with the strategies used to cope with feelings of stress and anxiety. Anxiety specifically impedes classroom achievement due to its interference with the production and retention of a new language. In other words, anxious students have been shown to learn less and have been often unable to demonstrate what they have learned, especially in front of large crowds. When anxiety impairs cognitive function, it likewise causes students to …

Screening And Assessing Immigrant And Refugee Youth In School-Based Mental Health Programs, Dina Birman, Wing-Yi Chan May 2008

Screening And Assessing Immigrant And Refugee Youth In School-Based Mental Health Programs, Dina Birman, Wing-Yi Chan

Center for Health and Health Care in Schools

According to the 2000 Census, 1 of every 5 children in the United States is a child of immigrants – either a child who is an immigrant or has at least one immigrant parent. While most children who experience mental health problems have limited access to help, children who have migrated to this country, especially under difficult circumstances, face particular challenges. Providers may be unfamiliar with their culture or the way that their culture understands mental health issues; children and their caregivers may not speak English, and the tools developed to identify and treat children with mental health needs may …

Making Strangers Indelible: Eggers, Ondaatje, And Civil War, Guy J. Reynolds May 2008

Making Strangers Indelible: Eggers, Ondaatje, And Civil War, Guy J. Reynolds

Department of English: Presentations

With no-doubt foreseen timeliness, the German social theorist Ulrich Beck argued in 2000 that a new era had begun. Describing a ‘Second Age of Modernity,’ he stated that ‘towards the end of the twentieth century the condition humana opens up anew… A new kind of capitalism, a new kind of economy, a new kind of global order, a new kind of politics and law, and a new kind of society and personal life are in the making, which both separately and in context are clearly distinct from earlier phases of social evolution.’ Beck pointed to an explosion of ‘empirical indicators …

'Bajo Su Sombra': The Narration And Reception Of Colonial Urban Space In Early Nineteenth-Century Havana, Cuba, Paul Barrett Niell May 2008

'Bajo Su Sombra': The Narration And Reception Of Colonial Urban Space In Early Nineteenth-Century Havana, Cuba, Paul Barrett Niell

Art & Art History ETDs

In early nineteenth-century Havana, Cuba, a small commemorative monument was erected on the Plaza de Armas to honor the site of the city's founding. Through academic history painting, Neoclassical architecture, and the appropriation of symbolic urban space, this memorial reconstructed the sixteenth-century history of the city for nineteenth-century audiences. This addition to the plaza could be seen as an extension of the Bourbon Reforms, which aimed to modernize the city by introducing public works and pedagogical methods that would make this Cuban colony function more efficiently in the insterests of Spain. However, upon closer examination, the memorial for the plaza …

Matching Records In Multiple Databases Using A Hybridization Of Several Technologies., Xiaoyi Wang 1962- May 2008

Matching Records In Multiple Databases Using A Hybridization Of Several Technologies., Xiaoyi Wang 1962-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major problem with integrating information from multiple databases is that the same data objects can exist in inconsistent data formats across databases and a variety of attribute variations, making it difficult to identify matching objects using exact string matching. In this research, a variety of models and methods have been developed and tested to alleviate this problem. A major motivation for this research is that the lack of efficient tools for patient record matching still exists for health care providers. This research is focused on the approximate matching of patient records with third party payer databases. This is a …

Celtic Subtleties : Brian Friel's Appropriation Of The O'Donnell Clan., Leslie Anne Singel 1984- May 2008

Celtic Subtleties : Brian Friel's Appropriation Of The O'Donnell Clan., Leslie Anne Singel 1984-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a literary examination of three plays from Irish playwright Brian Friel, Translations, Philadelphia, Here I Come! and Aristocrats , all of which feature a family of the O'Donnell name and all set in the fictional Donegal village of Ballybeg. Written during the late twentieth century but set over the course of 150 years in rural Ireland, these plays have yet to be--and need to be--studied as a cycle series rather than strictly individual works. In examining the three plays as a testament to a single ancient Irish family name, one may see how Friel comments upon the …

Through The Eyes Of The Accused: Applying William L. Benoit’S Image Restoration Theory To Saint Patrick’S Confession, Brad Jackson May 2008

Through The Eyes Of The Accused: Applying William L. Benoit’S Image Restoration Theory To Saint Patrick’S Confession, Brad Jackson

Masters Theses

Since 1995, William L Benoit’s “Image Restoration Theory” has been applied in various different contexts. While most applications of this theory have been used to analyze modern day apologia, little work has filtered ancient artifacts through Benoit’s theory. This thesis aims to analyze St. Patrick’s defense rhetoric as seen in his autobiographical letter Confession. Emphasis is first placed on the historical account of the life of Saint Patrick in order to establish a foundation for analysis of Confession. An extensive literature review of “Image Restoration Theory” follows before the application of Benoit’s theory to Confession. The author concludes by describing …
