Extralegal Practices Of Afghan Refugees In Iran: Exploring Feminist Transnationalism And Immigration Theories, Shahin Gerami Oct 2008

Extralegal Practices Of Afghan Refugees In Iran: Exploring Feminist Transnationalism And Immigration Theories, Shahin Gerami

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

A growing trend in population movement is transnationalism in which immigrants move between communities in host and home countries. Most research on transnationalists has focused on affluent immigrants engaging in global economy from the above and in the North. Transnational feminist narrative of agency allows that both licit and illegal activities practiced by marginalized communities of the South make a significant contribution to the global economy from below. A case study of Afghan refugee families in Iran revealed that their movement into Iran, another less developed country, resembles the immigration and integration of ethnic workers into advanced industrial countries. Their …

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

This study covers a decade of academic research in the Supply Chain Management (SCM) field, offering an in-depth analytical review focused on the existing trends and gaps in the supply chain literature. Nine academic journals were investigated and a subject categorization is developed for SCM research. A content analysis was then conducted on 405 articles, focusing on the categories covered within the SCM literature, various levels of the chain examined and sample populations and industries studied, as well as the research methods employed. Finally, a conceptual framework of the most highly researched categories in SCM indicates that there is a …

Historic Thermal Calibration Of Landsat 5 Tm Through An Improved Physics Based Approach, Francis P. Padula Oct 2008

Historic Thermal Calibration Of Landsat 5 Tm Through An Improved Physics Based Approach, Francis P. Padula

Theses

This investigation is motivated by the current need for a detailed post launch calibration of the Thematic Mapper (TM) thermal band (Band 6), aboard NASA’s Landsat 5 spacecraft. The historical calibration spans the period from 1984 to 2007. It is through fusion of environmental data sources (i.e. buoy observations, surface observations, and radiosonde observations) that a vicarious calibration approach will be implemented to construct the complete calibration record of the Landsat 5 TM thermal band. The vicarious calibration process takes advantage of the long standing National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) moored buoy fleet to acquire historic ground truth measurements needed …

Power And Piety: The Religiosity Of Michel De Marillac, Donald A. Bailey Ph.D. Oct 2008

Power And Piety: The Religiosity Of Michel De Marillac, Donald A. Bailey Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

A major text of the life of Michel de Marillac, Lezeau’s Histoire de la vie de messier Michel de Marillac has a hagiographic perspective. However, it is more informative about Marillac’s religiosity than one might think. It details his spiritual experiences and religious practices and how they impacted all aspects of his life. Marillac scrupulously applied religious principles to his duties overseeing finance and justice. He believed that civil order should be enforced by divine and royal authority. Lezeau’s assertions are placed within the context of the conventions of Marillac’s time (by which he was considered a model Christian statesman) …

The Role Of Gender In Environmental Justice, Nancy Unger Sep 2008

The Role Of Gender In Environmental Justice, Nancy Unger

History

Environmental Justice incorporates an inclusive definition of its subject matter, exploring the environmental burdens impacting all marginalized populations and communities. This expansive definition allows for the possibility that populations conventionally viewed as privileged can nevertheless be marginalized and suffer uniquely from environmental injustices. Employing such a definition can also reveal how an ostensibly powerless group can fight for environmental justice on its own terms—and win. Gender has played an important role in environmental justice (and injustice) throughout the history of the United States. Excerpts from my current book project, Beyond “Nature’s Housekeepers”: Gendered Turning Points for American Women in Environmental …

Memoirs Of The Persecuted: Persecution, Memory, And The West As A Mormon Refuge, David W. Grua Aug 2008

Memoirs Of The Persecuted: Persecution, Memory, And The West As A Mormon Refuge, David W. Grua

Theses and Dissertations

The memory of past violence in Missouri and Illinois during the 1830s and 1840s shaped how members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Latter-day Saints or Mormons) saw themselves, their persecutors, and the states and the nation where the violence occurred. This thesis explores the role of collective memory of violence in forming Mormon identities and images of place from 1838, when governor Lilburn W. Boggs expelled the Latter-day Saints from Missouri, to 1858, with the conclusion of the Utah War. I argue that Latter-day Saint authors during these two decades used the memory of persecution to …

John Calvin: An Educational Innovator Or A Reflector Of Society, Jim Llewellyn Codling Aug 2008

John Calvin: An Educational Innovator Or A Reflector Of Society, Jim Llewellyn Codling

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the influence of John Calvin in education, as well as those influences that affected him. It examined his writings to determine if his vision, as to the scope of education and its purpose, made him an innovator. The research searched for reforms in the areas of curriculum, understanding of the teaching office, and universal education. It also looked at philosophy, economics, and labor. Schools existed in Geneva before Calvin arrived in 1536; however, they did not function in the way that Calvin would have liked. Calvin provided the elementary students with a needed text when he prepared …

Three Wittgensteins: Interpreting The Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Thomas J. Brommage Jr. Aug 2008

Three Wittgensteins: Interpreting The Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Thomas J. Brommage Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There are historically three main trends in understanding Wittgenstein's Tractatus. The first is the interpretation offered by the Vienna Circle. They read Wittgenstein as arguing that neither metaphysical nor normative propositions have any cognitive meaning, and thus are to be considered nonsense. This interpretation understands Wittgenstein as setting the limits of sense, and prescribing that nothing of substantive philosophical importance lies beyond that line. The second way of reading the Tractatus, which has became popular since the 1950s, is the interpretation which most currently accept as the early Wittgenstein's view; for this reason I refer to it …

Volunteer Studies In Pain Research — Opportunities And Challenges To Replace Animal Experiments: The Report And Recommendations Of A Focus On Alternatives Workshop, C. K. Langley, Q. Aziz, C. Bountra, N. Gordon, P. Hawkins, A. Jones, G. Langley, T. Nurmikko, I. Tracey

Experimentation Collection

Despite considerable research, effective and safe treatments for human pain disorders remain elusive. Understanding the biology of different human pain conditions and researching effective treatments continue to be dominated by animal models, some of which are of limited value. British and European legislation demands that non-animal approaches should be considered before embarking on research using experimental animals. Recent scientific and technical developments, particularly in human neuroimaging, offer the potential to replace some animal procedures in the study of human pain. A group of pain research experts from academia and industry met with the aim of exploring creatively the tools, strategies …

"I Had Always Been Opposed To Colonialism" : President Harry S. Truman And The End Of European Colonialism., Timothy J. Pifer 1957-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a biographical and historiographical examination of Truman's rhetoric and handling of colonialism. Truman's position regarding European colonialism is a worthy topic since it facilitates the study of the United States' treatment of people in underdeveloped countries and allows insight into Truman's beliefs. The research methodology and references used for the paper include primary sources drawn principally from the Truman Presidential Library as well as numerous secondary sources relating to Truman's Presidency. The focus of analysis is on Truman and his administration's oratory and diplomatic decisions regarding colonial issues. The findings show that Truman demonstrated through both his …
