Etiology And Seasonal Variation For Young Stroke Patients In Taiwan, Ying-Fang Chen, Baii-Jia Yang, Yi-Pin Chiang Dec 2008

Etiology And Seasonal Variation For Young Stroke Patients In Taiwan, Ying-Fang Chen, Baii-Jia Yang, Yi-Pin Chiang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Over a 3-year period, 3852 patients with the first stroke were admitted to a medical center in Taiwan, of whom 227 (5.89%) were 15 to 45 years old. The diagnosis of stroke was confirmed by either MRI or CT scan. The incidence was skewed toward the older end of the age range, and men predominated (153/227, 67.4%). The stroke was the hemorrhagic type in 56.3% (128/227) versus the infarction type in 43.7% (99/227), a reversal of the ratio usually seen in patients over 45 years with infarction 64.9% (2500) versus hemorrhage 35.1% (1352). The case-fatality rate was 13.2% (30/227), including …

New Distributional Records Of The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus) In Western New Mexico And Evidence For Its Extirpation From The Zuni Mountains, Jennifer K. Frey

Western North American Naturalist

In the American Southwest, the red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) occurs as disjunct populations in coniferous forests on mountaintops. There is a paucity of information concerning the species' distribution and habitat in western New Mexico. I report new records that document and verify the occurrence of red squirrels in additional montane areas in west central New Mexico, including the Mangas Mountains, Canovas Rim, Turner Mountain, Tularosa Mountains, Elk Mountains, Bearwallow Mountain, and Pinos Altos Mountains. I also report observations of red squirrels from an atypical habitat—low-elevation riparian forests. These new records suggest that the geographic distribution of the species …

Integrated Management Strategies For Phytophthora Sojae Combining Host Resistance And Seed Treatments, A. E. Dorrance, A. E. Robertson, S. Cianzo, L. J. Giesler, C. R. Grau, M. A. Draper, A. U. Tenuta, T. R. Anderson

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Phytophthora sojae has re-emerged as a serious soybean pathogen in the past decade. This may be due in part to changes in resistance levels in current cultivars, adoption of P. sojae populations to deployed Rps genes, and highly favorable environments in the past decade. This multilocation study evaluated the effect of seed treatments on the incidence and severity of Phytophthora root and stem rot on soybeans with different combinations of Rps genes and levels of partial resistance. The efficacy of the seed treatments was highly variable across locations. Seed treatments (metalaxyl and mefenoxam) provided protection and increased yields across cultivars …

The Systemic Nature Of Action Learning Programmes, G Mwaluko Dec 2008

The Systemic Nature Of Action Learning Programmes, G Mwaluko

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

A lot of attention has been paid on action learning in the last four decades or so and the success of such programmes has also been widely publicized. But why have these programmes been so effective in helping organizations cope with change? Many authors state that the success of such programmes is due to the fact that they link learning to actions. Yet others claim that action learning programmes succeed because they involve employee empowerment and provide a much greater learning curve. In this paper the authors hold that action learning programmes succeed because they are partly systemic and can …

Lost Generations? Indigenous Population Of The Russian North In The Post-Soviet Era, Andrey N. Petrov Dec 2008

Lost Generations? Indigenous Population Of The Russian North In The Post-Soviet Era, Andrey N. Petrov

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses key findings concerning population dynamic of the Indigenous minorities living in the Russian North during the post-Soviet period, highlighted by the 2002 Census. The paper places recent demographic trends into the context of past and current economic, social and institutional changes. It also provides comparisons with Indigenous population dynamics in other parts of the Arctic. Although most Indigenous peoples of the Russian North were growing numerically, they still experienced effects of Russia’s economic crisis, primarily reflected in rapidly falling fertility and rising mortality in the middle-age cohorts. In addition, both the ethnic drift and legal changes seriously …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The pressure of lack of enough resources on our National Health Insurance program and an increasing population of the aged and chronic patients has made the tele-home care technology an important choice. The tele-home care service is also regarded by our government as one of the core new service businesses for 2008. In this study, a prototype Tele-Home Care system, composed of Telephone-linked Care (TLC), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Text-To-Speech (TTS) and automatic questionnaire recognition, was developed and evaluated for spinal cord injury patient care. The prototype systems included a personal computer with an EASYTAPI voice card, a Fax card and …

The Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Between Outreach And Hospital Rehabilitation Models, Wei-Ni Chou, Shu-Yen Huang, Shu-Chuan Jennifer Yeh, Hing-Man Wu, Ming-Yang Koe, Yi-Ru Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hospitals and clinics are usually the places where patients receive medicare. However, it is extremely inconvenient for the elderly to frequently go between the homes and hospitals/clinics for long-term medicare. With doctor-served home care, the accessibility of medical treatment would increase; the risk of trauma or infection from traveling in-between would be avoided; more prompt and timely treatment-offered effectiveness would rise. However, there has been no study on the difference between the cost effectiveness of outreach versus hospital rehabilitation. Thence, the peculiarity of the outreach rehabilitation regarding the physiatrists providing medical services and the physical therapists and occupational therapists offering …

Acute Spontaneous Cervical Spinal Epidural Hematoma With Hemiparesis: A Casereport, Shu-Wei Chang, Chi-Lun Rau, Shin-Liang Pan, Yen-Ho Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma is a rare disease. The cardinal presentations include acute unilateral radicular pain, corresponding dermatomal hypesthesia, hemiparesis, hemiplegia, paraparesis, paraplegia, and sphincter dysfunction. If the initial symptoms include acute hemiplegia, it is important to differentiate spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma from stroke, tumor, infection, arteriovenous malformation, or autoimmune diseases. We report the case of a 42-year-old man, who visited the emergency department in September, 2006, with the chief complaints of right limbs weakness and neck pain. After the initial work-up, the impression was ischemic stroke. He was admitted for conservative treatment, but his neurological status progressively deteriorated. A cervical …

Increasing age is generally followed by increasing chronic diseases so that the elderly needs much therapy using drugs for therapy of numerous diseases they have. Hyper-tension is one of diseases of which its prevalence increases along with increasing age. Most of the elderly diagnosed as having hypertension finally take therapy using anti-hypertension drugs. Physiological changes that happen to the elderly lead to use of drugs for side effect diseases of which their consumption should be considered while having anti-hypertension drugs. Changes in biological system to the elderly will af-fect the process of drug molecular interaction, which finally affects clinical efficacy …
