The Value Of Community In Creating Quality: A Review Of The Sage Encyclopedia Of Qualitative Research, Ronald J. Chenail
The Qualitative Report
The SAGE Encyclopedia of Qualitative Research Methods is a welcomed contribution to the ever-expanding qualitative research reference library as it fills the gap such a standard, comprehensive written compendium should address. Benefiting from the contributions of a community of who’s who in the qualitative research world, the two volume work offers its readers easy to read, concise entries of high quality on methodologies, methods, and procedures as well as the evolving contexts in which these studies are conducted and consumed

Earth and Soil Sciences
Serpentinitic soils often contain high concentrations of heavy metals, including chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni). Soils derived from serpentine parent material are used for agricultural purposes throughout San Luis Obispo County, CA. This study was undertaken to determine the amount of total and bioaccessible Cr and Ni in soil and vine tissue from a vineyard planted on soils derived from serpentine geology. Eighteen soil and plant samples were collected from different slope position and vine types (syrah and chardonnay). Soil samples were collected from about 0 to 30 cm at the base of the vines and 15 to 20 leaf …

An Investigation Of The Security Designs Of A Structured Query Language (Sql) Database And Its Middleware Application And Their Secure Implementation Within Thinclient Environments, Melissa D. Winner-Leoni
An Investigation Of The Security Designs Of A Structured Query Language (Sql) Database And Its Middleware Application And Their Secure Implementation Within Thinclient Environments, Melissa D. Winner-Leoni
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and The SarbanesOxley (SOX) regulations greatly influenced the health care industry regarding the means of securing financial and private data within information and technology. With the introduction of thinclient technologies into medical information systems (IS), data security and regulation compliancy becomes more problematic due to the exposure to the World Wide Web (WWW) and malicious activity. This author explores the best practices of the medical industry and information technology industry for securing electronic data within the thinclient environment at the three levels of architecture: the SQL database, its middleware application, and Web interface. …

Triticeae contains hundreds of species of both annual and perennial types. Although substantial genomic tools are available for annual Triticeae cereals such as wheat and barley, the perennial Triticeae lack sufficient genomic resources for genetic mapping or diversity research. To increase the amount of sequence information available in the perennial Triticeae, three expressed sequence tag (EST) libraries were developed and annotated for Pseudoroegneria spicata, a mixture of both Elymus wawawaiensis and E. lanceolatus, and a Leymus cinereus x L. triticoides interspecific hybrid. The ESTs were combined into unigene sets of 8 780 unigenes for P. spicata, 11 281 unigenes for …

Purpose The Internet poses both a frontier that represents the possibility for vast exploration and an open space that leaves patients wandering through unreliable information. The purpose of this study was to determine the abilities of first-year (Junior-standing) nursing students to choose, evaluate and then explain their findings in relation to health information on the Web.
Setting/Subjects 108 first-year nursing students in Foundations I at the University of Northern Colorado.
Methodology Content analysis of written papers.
Results Evaluation comprised of three cohorts (consisting of 36 students each) of first-year nursing students in Foundations I in their assessment of 216 websites. …

The Youth Empowered For Success Program: A Multi-Faceted Approach To Youth Leadership Development And School Culture Change In Southern Arizona, Pam Parrish, Mari Wilhelm, Yvette Florez-Urcadez, Daniel Jeffrey
Journal of Youth Development
Arizona’s first Teen Institute (TI) program, Youth Empowered for Success, began in July 2004. It is the first TI-based project to focus on nurturing resilience via Health Realization (Pransky, 2007). The YES program’s design to “create conditions for success” in high schools is discussed. YES utilizes a strengths-based, multi-faceted approach of (1) teaching participants how to access their innate resilience and common sense (Health Realization), (2) training them in community development for school culture change and (3) helping them develop meaningful partnerships with adults. YES also expands upon the TI model by providing staff support for community development throughout the …

Butyric acid and trichostatin A (TSA) are anti-cancer compounds that cause the upregulation of genes involved in differentiation and cell cycle regulation by inhibiting histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity. In this study we have synthesized and evaluated compounds that combine the bioavailability of short-chain fatty acids, like butyric acid, with the bidentate binding ability of TSA. A series of analogs were made to examine the effects of chain length, simple aromatic cap groups, and substituted hydroxamates on the compounds' ability to inhibit rat-liver HDAC using a fluorometric assay. In keeping with previous structure-activity relationships, the most effective inhibitors consisted of longer …
