Maternal/Fetal Attachment: Associations Among Family Relationships, Maternal Health Practices, And Antenatal Attachment., Debra Cunningham Facello

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background. Maternal/fetal attachment plays an important role in the health of pregnant women and their unborn babies. In addition, maternal attachment is an important component of maternal identity and is essential in promoting healthy growth and development in the child. The proposed theoretical Model of Maternal/Fetal Attachment provides a framework for understanding and investigating this process. Purpose. The primary purpose of this research was to develop and test relationships within a model of maternal/fetal attachment for use in research and practice. Methods. The proposed theoretical relationships between family relationships, maternal health practices, and antenatal attachment were examined using quantitative analysis. …

Employing Adaptive Structuring As A Cognitive Decision Aid In High Reliability Organizations, Karlene H. Roberts, Kuo Frank Yu, Vinit M. Desai, Peter Madsen Jan 2008

Employing Adaptive Structuring As A Cognitive Decision Aid In High Reliability Organizations, Karlene H. Roberts, Kuo Frank Yu, Vinit M. Desai, Peter Madsen

Faculty Publications

The article begins by discussing processes contributing to high and low reliability decision making. It then discusses three cases, covering similar processes used in the three situations and notes what managers can take from this. Finally, the article argues for research that does not concentrate on a single organization but examines interactions among geographically distributed units addressing the same problem.

Insights And Inspiration: Recent Commentary, Larry C. Spears Jan 2008

Insights And Inspiration: Recent Commentary, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

My dictionary offers the following definitions for the words: Heart, Mind, and Spirit- • Heart: regarded as the seat of emotions, personality, attributes. • Mind: the thinking and perceiving part of consciousness. • Spirit: a pervading animating principle, essential, or characteristic quality of life. I believe that all three of these are important to understanding the essential nature of servant-leadership. Standard practices are rapidly shifting toward the ideas put forward by Robert Greenleaf, Stephen Covey, Peter Senge, Max DePree, Margaret Wheatley, Ken Blanchard, and many others who suggest that there is a better way to lead and manage our organizations. …

Servant-Leadership In The Context Of Sport, Kirk Westre Jan 2008

Servant-Leadership In The Context Of Sport, Kirk Westre

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership. -Harvey Firestone The characteristics of a new style of leadership, servant-leadership, first described by Robert K. Greenleaf (1977), served as the framework for this study, with the specific focus being to determine the applicability of servant-leadership in the area of sport. Servant-leadership is an emerging leadership style that has gained momentum in a variety of organizational situations (Greenleaf, 1977). Leading authors on leadership and organizational management have discussed the positive effects of servant-leadership on employee satisfaction and organizational profits-authors such as Kenneth Blanchard, Peter Block, Steven Covey, Max …

Perspectives On Servant-Leadership & Spirit In Organizations, John Horsman Jan 2008

Perspectives On Servant-Leadership & Spirit In Organizations, John Horsman

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The precepts of servant-leadership, described by Robert K. Greenleaf, are the focal points around which this study was conducted. The study was designed to gain a measure of the extent of servant-leadership and personal aspects of spirit within the organizations, rather than as an attempt to measure the servant-leadership and spirit of certain organizational leaders. The quantitative study was designed to enhance understanding of servant-leadership and spirit in organizations.

Servant-Leadership Development In Higher Education, Richard Cummins Jan 2008

Servant-Leadership Development In Higher Education, Richard Cummins

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

"Top line," used by researchers in the field of leadership and creativity (Freeman, Isaksen, & Dorval, 2001), proposes that servant-leadership is a driving force of organizations focused on questions of why and for whom, as opposed to the bottom-line what (pp. 265-267). Higher education could improve with leadership development efforts to "reclaim intangible resources, including people's talents that increase innovative capacity by focusing on relationships, perceptions, and attitudes" (p. 264). Because public education does not have, per se, a dollar-driven, "bottom line" focus, its institutions can be wholly about service. Robert K. Greenleaf (2002), the leading figure in servant-leadership theory …

Xhosa Tribal Culture And Its Influence On The Servant-Leadership Of Nelson Mandela, Mary C. Sobralske Jan 2008

Xhosa Tribal Culture And Its Influence On The Servant-Leadership Of Nelson Mandela, Mary C. Sobralske

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Your pain is my pain, my wealth is your wealth, your salvation is my salvation. -an African expression of ubuntu (www.simongoland.com, 2004) In 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected black president of South Africa. This historical event had a tremendous impact on the world. Much has been written about Mandela as a leader, but little has highlighted his cultural background, how it influenced his deep-seated cultural values and beliefs, and how his culture shaped his leadership. It is important to analyze how his cultural upbringing determined his destiny as a dignified, respected, and popular global servant-leader.

A Kenyan On Servant-Leadership: Harambee And Service, Jeremiah Ole Koshal, Kathleen Patterson Jan 2008

A Kenyan On Servant-Leadership: Harambee And Service, Jeremiah Ole Koshal, Kathleen Patterson

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert K. Greenleaf (1977) offers a foundational understanding of servant-leadership with this statement: The servant-leader is servant first. .. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve first. . . Then, conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead... The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people's highest-priority needs are being served. The best test, and the most difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, and more likely themselves to become servants? And what …

The Journey Of Leadership Development From The Inside Out: Going Forward, Paul M. Nakai Jan 2008

The Journey Of Leadership Development From The Inside Out: Going Forward, Paul M. Nakai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Two years ago, Jack Welch spoke of an Ethiopian CEO who had led his organization into becoming a global multi-million dollar company. Over the last two years, this man became aware that 60% of his workforce had tested positive for HIV. He sought the advice of many contemporary business consultants, unfortunately without much personal satisfaction. Most of the individuals with whom he conferred tried to analyze the problem and resolve it through the state of mind that saw the situation as a problem. They spoke of recruiting programs, procedures and protocols, protection against diminishing productivity, infection dangers, and other operational …

Servant-Leadership In Sport: A Concept Whose Time Has Arrived, Jon Hammermeister, Damon Burton, Michael Pickering, Matthew Chase Jan 2008

Servant-Leadership In Sport: A Concept Whose Time Has Arrived, Jon Hammermeister, Damon Burton, Michael Pickering, Matthew Chase

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

As we enter the year 2007, more and more organizations are beginning to see that traditional, autocratic, and hierarchical models of leadership are failing to provide the framework necessary for productive work environments. According to McGee-Cooper and Trammell (2002), servant-leadership is one model of leadership that can help turn those traditional notions of leadership and organizational structure upside down and provide the needed context for a more satisfied and productive workforce. The servantleader model (Greenleaf, 1977) is one based on teamwork and community, one that seeks to involve others in decision making, one strongly based in ethical and caring behavior, …

The Public Interest, Professionalism, And Pro Bono Publico, Lorne Sossin Jan 2008

The Public Interest, Professionalism, And Pro Bono Publico, Lorne Sossin

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

There is a clear public interest benefit for lawyers to ensure access to the rule of law, especially on the part of the vulnerable. This article seeks to show that the seemingly simple relationship between the legal profession and the public interest is in fact more complicated than it looks. Pro bono may be viewed from two perspectives-that of the lawyer and that of the client. From the perspective of the lawyer, the important question is whether there is ethical motivation to engage in pro bono. If, however, the perspective of the client is paramount, then meeting the client's needs …

Representing A Minor: A Shared Dilemma In Ontario And Massachusetts, Andrew L. Kaufman Jan 2008

Representing A Minor: A Shared Dilemma In Ontario And Massachusetts, Andrew L. Kaufman

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This commentary considers what lawyers should do when confidential information from their minor clients indicates that the minor's instructions either present a substantial risk of harm to the minor or are irrational. The commentary then asks readers to decide whether and how their personal resolution should be generalized into the law of professional responsibility. The author compares current Ontario and Massachusetts law with a new Massachusetts proposal. The author strongly criticizes the proposal as violating the tenuous compromise between "client-directed" and "best- interests" or "substituted judgment" theories that appear to govern in both jurisdictions in favour of a rule that …

Amending The Exceptions Clause, Joseph Blocher Jan 2008

Amending The Exceptions Clause, Joseph Blocher

Faculty Scholarship

Jurisdiction stripping is the new constitutional amendment, and the Exceptions Clause is the new Article V. But despite legal academia’s long-running obsessions with the meaning of constitutional amendment and the limits (if any) on Congress’s power to control federal jurisdiction, we still lack even a basic understanding of how these two forms of constitutional politicking interact. As legislators increasingly propose and pass jurisdiction-stripping legislation and pursue politically charged constitutional amendments, these constitutional processes have begun to step off of the pages of law reviews and into the halls of Congress. The looming collision between them makes it all the more …

Synthesis Of Substituted 2-Vinyl And 2-Phenylbenzimidazoles And Progress Towards The Synthesis Of Natural Products Ht-13-A And Ht-13-B, Jeremiah W. Hubbard Jan 2008

Synthesis Of Substituted 2-Vinyl And 2-Phenylbenzimidazoles And Progress Towards The Synthesis Of Natural Products Ht-13-A And Ht-13-B, Jeremiah W. Hubbard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Synthesis of 2-alkenyl and 2-arylbenzimidazoles, having a variety of functional groups, has been accomplished via a novel palladium-catalyzed reductive N-heteroannulation of 2-nitro- N-alkyl or N-benzyl benzenamines. The cyclization precursors are readily prepared from commercially available compounds by a variety of methods. In addition, the first total synthesis of ht-13-A has been studied. The key steps of the synthesis are a Mitsunobu reaction, an intramolecular Heck reaction, and a reductive N-heteroannulation.

Neuropsychological Functioning Of College Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Melanie Ann Nuszkowski Jan 2008

Neuropsychological Functioning Of College Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Melanie Ann Nuszkowski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often experience significant impairment in multiple life domains not only during childhood, but also throughout their adult lives. While there is no single litmus test for identifying ADHD, neuropsychological tests have been proposed as one means of enhancing identification of ADHD in adults. Theories of ADHD have suggested that deficits in executive functioning underlie the symptom appearance for ADHD; however, meta-analyses have suggested that non-executive functioning skills provide nearly equal discriminatory results. Given the increasing proportion of students with ADHD who are pursuing postsecondary education, the need for further research addressing the impact …

Fixing Innovation Policy: A Structural Perspective, Stuart M. Benjamin, Arti K. Rai Jan 2008

Fixing Innovation Policy: A Structural Perspective, Stuart M. Benjamin, Arti K. Rai

Faculty Scholarship

Innovation is central to economic growth and human welfare. Government officials and commentators have recognized this reality and have called for a variety of different substantive incentives for stimulating innovation. But the question of how an innovation regulator should be structured has received little attention. Such consideration is important not only because of the significance of innovation but also because current government innovation policy is so haphazard. There is no government entity that looks at innovation broadly, and the narrower agencies that regulate aspects of innovation policy not only fail to pay systematic attention to innovation goals but often act …

[Oehlmann et al.]: Recently, we had the opportunity to read two articles in volume 66 of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety. Forbes et al. (2007a, , 2007b) declare “to explore the reproducibility of prior work” showing that bisphenol A (BPA) induces superfeminization in the freshwater snail Marisa cornuarietis (Oehlmann et al., 2000, 2006; Schulte- Oehlmann et al., 2001). Based on the outcome of a toxicity test with the same species, the authors conclude that their results “do not support previous claims of enhanced reproduction in M. cornuarietis in response to exposure to BPA.” We take issue with the declaration of …

Mixture Toxicity Of Three Toxicants With Similar And Dissimilar Modes Of Action To Daphnia Magna, Kristian Syberg, Anders Elleby, Henrik Pedersen, Nina Cedergreen, Valery E. Forbes Jan 2008

Mixture Toxicity Of Three Toxicants With Similar And Dissimilar Modes Of Action To Daphnia Magna, Kristian Syberg, Anders Elleby, Henrik Pedersen, Nina Cedergreen, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

Mixture toxicity of similar- and dissimilar-acting toxicants can be predicted by the models concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) using single substance toxicity data. Knowledge of the toxicants mode of action is thus required in order to use the models. In order to test the predictive capability of the models, we conducted Daphnia magna 48 h immobilization experiments with three toxicants with known modes of action (dimethoate, pirimicarb and linear alkyl benzene sulfonate) singly, and in binary and ternary mixtures. Our results indicate that CA and IA predict binary mixtures of similar- and dissimilar-acting toxicants equally well. CA and …

Life History And Population Dynamics Of The Opportunistic Polychaete Capitella Sp. I In Relation To Sediment Organic Matter, Tina Ramskov, Valery E. Forbes Jan 2008

Life History And Population Dynamics Of The Opportunistic Polychaete Capitella Sp. I In Relation To Sediment Organic Matter, Tina Ramskov, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

Capitella sp. I is a deposit-feeding polychaete that occurs in estuarine and marine environments and that shows boom-bust population dynamics in response to organic pollution. A lifecycle experiment was carried out to quantify the relative importance of individual life-history traits for driving the dynamics of Capitella sp. I populations in response to changes in sediment organic matter concentrations. Individual-level effects were estimated as changes in survival, reproductive characteristics, and growth. Effects at the population-level were assessed by integrating the measured life-history traits in a simple 2-stage demographic model that was used to estimate the population growth rate (λ). Low organic …

Plankton Stress Responses From Pah Exposure And Nutrient Enrichment, Morten Hjorth, Valery E. Forbes, Ingela Dahllöf Jan 2008

Plankton Stress Responses From Pah Exposure And Nutrient Enrichment, Morten Hjorth, Valery E. Forbes, Ingela Dahllöf

Valery Forbes Publications

The hypothesis that the nature and force of PAH stress responses from plankton systems are coupled to the nutrient status of that system was tested in a mesocosm experiment. Four treatments were applied consisting of control (Cn), pyrene exposed (Py). nutrient spiked (Nu), and nutrient spiked and pyrene exposed (NuPy) groups in replicate bags (n = 3) representing plankton communities including bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton. Regardless of nutrient status, all the Py mesocosms were affected directly with decreases in chlorophyll α concentrations to 20 % of control values on Day 1. Primary production was also significantly lower (< 50 %) than Cn communities in both Py and NuPy communities after the first pyrene exposure. Indirect effects were observed as increased bacterial activity due to nutrient release from algal death, thereby channelling growth to another trophic level. With time the plankton system became top-down controlled, dominated by zooplankton, which was also the trophic group experiencing the longest lasting effect on structure. The occurrence of late effects in the zooplankton communities were seen in all treatments, but the magnitude of the effects was dependent on the nutrient status, most probably because of a larger trophic transfer of the contaminant. To improve our understanding of contaminant effects on food webs in natural communities, it is imperative that interactions between trophic levels in relation to abiotic factors are investigated.

The Aesthetics Of Trademarks, Peter H. Karlen Jan 2008

The Aesthetics Of Trademarks, Peter H. Karlen

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Trademarks are not just property, they are aesthetic creations that pervade everyday experience. One estimate is that the average person encounters more than 1,000 trademarks per day, many of which influence purchases and product use.

As pervasive aesthetic creations having literary, pictorial, graphic, sculptural, and musical content, trademarks deserve aesthetic analysis. The article discusses the origins, strength, appeal, and effectiveness of trademarks within the context of aesthetic considerations such as meaning, intention, authorship, and mode of creation. Also reviewed are morphemic and phonemic analysis of trademarks, semantic positioning, the dichotomy between creation and discovery of trademarks, and the differences between …

Can We Get Inside The Aesthetic Sensibility Of The Archaic Past?, Frederic Will Jan 2008

Can We Get Inside The Aesthetic Sensibility Of The Archaic Past?, Frederic Will

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This essay is about getting inside the sensibility of the archaic past.[1] Can we get into the creative mind of the painter of The Sorcerer? Can we reconstruct the sensibility of prehistoric humans? Can we recover the humor of the prehistoric artist? Can we do it? After all, sense equipment is the same in men and women of all ages, and though each age inflects its sense usages uniquely, there should remain an underlying continuity among sensibilities. Shouldn't we be able to return into earlier forms of those usages? Can we tell whether we have been successful in accomplishing …

The Shepherd Goes To War: Santo Domingo Revisited, Martha Daas Jan 2008

The Shepherd Goes To War: Santo Domingo Revisited, Martha Daas

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

The thirteenth century was witness to a revolution in personal piety and the Camino de Santiago represented this new age. Pilgrimage in the Middle Ages became not only a symbol of devotion, but also a powerful method of active participation in one’s own salvation.1 The importance of this burgeoning individualism is reflected by the miracle tales of a saint who is connected both spiritually and geographically to Santiago and his trail. Like the miracles attributed to the patron saint, the miracles of Santo Domingo de Silos, as they are interpreted by Gonzalo de Berceo, reflect this revolution in personal …

Pilot Study Of 8 Smes In Pakistan, Ejaz Mian

Business Review

These (eight) cases study small firms (with 1-50 employees) in Pakistan to determine marketing factors that lead to success. Information is gathered through in-depth interviews with owner-managers on their premises. Convenience sampling is used within the city of Karachi. Firms included relate to production, and services (including retail). It was found that most of the firms are not marketing oriented and they do not understand marketing. Thus they will benefit from some kind of marketing training conducted by the government or through their own resources.
