Corn Futures: Consumer Politics, Health, And Climate Change, Jedediah Purdy, James Salzman

Faculty Scholarship

The Mexicans have long been known as the Corn People, but that label perhaps provides a better fit for modern day Americans. The simple seeds of corn play a fundamental role unprecedented in the history of human agriculture. Corn now underpins two major sectors, arguably the two most important sectors, of our modern economy - food supply and energy supply. How we choose to consume this seed has far-ranging consequences for pressing issues as far apart as climate change and diabetes, energy policy and immigration, tropical deforestation and food riots.

Beyond Cost-Benefit Analysis: A Pragmatic Reorientation, Sidney A. Shapiro, Christopher H. Schroeder Jan 2008

Beyond Cost-Benefit Analysis: A Pragmatic Reorientation, Sidney A. Shapiro, Christopher H. Schroeder

Faculty Scholarship

The weaknesses of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) are apparent for all to see. The theoretical underpinnings of positivism and rational choice methodologies have been dealt a significant blow in the post-positivist literature in science, political science and policy studies. Likewise, the performance of CBA itself has been the subject of a significant and persuasive challenge in the legal literature. This article critiques specifically the current federal form of regulatory impact analysis (RIA), centered institutionally in OIRA and centered methodologically in CBA. One of reasons for the continuing dominance of a CBA-centered RIA is the success of its proponents in maintaining that …

The New Innovation Frontier? Intellectual Property And The European Court Of Human Rights, Laurence R. Helfer

Faculty Scholarship

This article provides the first comprehensive analysis of the intellectual property case law of the European Court of Human Rights ("ECHR"). Within the last three years, the ECHR has issued a trio of intellectual property rulings interpreting the right of property protected by the European Convention on Human Rights. These decisions, which view intellectual property through the lens of fundamental rights, have important consequences for the region's innovation and creativity policies. The cases are also emblematic of a growing number of controversies in domestic and international law over the intersection of human rights, property rights, and intellectual property. The article …

The Food Patterns Of Southern Louisiana Residents, Chad Eriksen Jan 2008

The Food Patterns Of Southern Louisiana Residents, Chad Eriksen

LSU Master's Theses

Obesity is one of the most pressing public health concerns in Louisiana. There are numerous reasons believed to be major contributors to the obesity epidemic, one of which is dietary habits. The purpose of this study was to investigate and identify the dietary patterns of southern Louisiana residents. A self administered, semi-quantitative questionnaire was used. Subjects (n=308) were recruited from Louisiana State University (LSU). Results suggested that it is possible to describe the dietary patterns of a southern Louisiana population. Compared to whites, the percentage of African Americans who were served or consumed fried fish, rice, red beans and rice, …

Entrepreneur As Change Agent: Antecedents And Moderators Of Individual-Level Philanthropic Behavior, Joseph E. Coombs, Abbie J. Shipp, Lisa Jones Christensen

Faculty Publications

What motivates entrepreneurs’ philanthropic acts? Philanthropy has been key to American social and cultural development, and it is also a major driver, along with entrepreneurship, of the American economy. To help researchers better understand the antecedents of entrepreneurs’ philanthropic giving, we develop a theoretical model of individual-level philanthropic actions. As antecedents of philanthropic actions in our model, we include three theoretical constructs (immortality striving, legacy creation, and generativity) from the psychology and social psychology literatures. We also propose several variables that we expect to moderate these relationships including entrepreneur age, gender, religious orientation, and wealth. Lastly, we offer directions for …

Firm Diversification And Earnings Management: Evidence From Seasoned Equity Offerings, Chee Yeow Lim, Tiong Yang Thong, David K. Ding Jan 2008

Firm Diversification And Earnings Management: Evidence From Seasoned Equity Offerings, Chee Yeow Lim, Tiong Yang Thong, David K. Ding

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Popular press suggests that diversified firms are more aggressive in managing earnings than non-diversified firms. We examine this claim in the seasoned equity offering (SEO) setting, where firms have been shown to have the incentive to manage earnings upwards. Using the cross-sectional modified Jones [(1991) J Accounting Res 29:193–228] model to measure discretionary current accruals, we find that discretionary current accruals are higher among diversified firms than in non-diversified ones. Our evidence is consistent with the view that the extent of firm diversification is directly related to the degree of earnings management. We further show that diversified issuers with high …

The Relationship Between Training Load And Incidence Of Injury And Illness Over A Pre-Season At An Australian Football League Club, Benjamin Piggott

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In any competitive sporting environment, it is crucial to a team's success to have the maximum number of their players free from injury and illness and available for selection in as many games as possible throughout the season. The training programme of the club, and therefore training load, can have an impact on the incidence of injury and illness amongst the players. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the training load and the incidence of injury and illness over an entire pre-season at an Australian Football League (AFL) club. Sixteen players were subjects; all full …

Smith, Sally Owen, Ching Li, Parisa Amjadi, Patricia Green, Anna Andersson, Andrew C. Palfreeman, Philippa Hillyer, Andrew Foey, Jonathan T. Beech, Marc Feldmann

School of Biomedical Sciences

BACKGROUND: Previously we described a system whereby human peripheral blood T cells stimulated for 8 days in a cytokine cocktail acquired effector function for contact-dependent induction of proinflammatory cytokines from monocytes. We termed these cells cytokine-activated (Tck) cells and found that the signalling pathways elicited in the responding monocytes were identical whether they were placed in contact with Tck cells or with T cells isolated from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovial tissue. METHODS: Here, using magnetic beads and fluorescence-activated cell sorting, we extensively phenotype the Tck effector cells and conclude that effector function resides within the CD4+CD45RO+, CCR7-, CD49dhigh population, and …

School of Biomedical Sciences

The early systemic production of interferon (IFN)-alphabeta is an essential component of the antiviral host defense mechanisms, but is also thought to contribute to the toxic side effects accompanying gene therapy with adenoviral vectors. Here we investigated the IFN-alphabeta response to human adenoviruses (Ads) in mice. By comparing the responses of normal, myeloid (m)DC- and plasmacytoid (p)DC-depleted mice and by measuring IFN-alphabeta mRNA expression in different organs and cells types, we show that in vivo, Ads elicit strong and rapid IFN-alphabeta production, almost exclusively in splenic mDCs. Using knockout mice, various strains of Ads (wild type, mutant and UV-inactivated) and …

Systems Biology Meets Stress Ecology: Linking Molecular And Organismal Stress Responses In Daphnia Magna, L-H Heckmann, Rm Sibly, R Connon, Hl Hooper, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

BACKGROUND: Ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been designed to interrupt eicosanoid metabolism in mammals, but little is known of how they affect nontarget organisms. Here we report a systems biology study that simultaneously describes the transcriptomic and phenotypic stress responses of the model crustacean Daphnia magna after exposure to ibuprofen. RESULTS: Our findings reveal intriguing similarities in the mode of action of ibuprofen between vertebrates and invertebrates, and they suggest that ibuprofen has a targeted impact on reproduction at the molecular, organismal, and population level in daphnids. Microarray expression and temporal real-time quantitative PCR profiles of key genes …

Motivation To Change Parenting In Mothers Of Children With And Without Adhd: Associations With Demographic And Psychological Characteristics., Stephanie M. Wagner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Motivation to change is considered an important factor in treatment adherence and outcome, yet there is a lack of research on parental motivation to change in the child psychotherapy literature. The current study examined the internal consistency of a measure of parental motivation, the Parent Motivation Inventory (PMI) and investigated associated demographic and psychological characteristics in 61 mothers of children who exhibited varying degrees of inattentive and/or hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. Results demonstrated that the PMI has high internal consistency, can distinguish between mothers of children with and without ADHD, and that an additional 7% of variance in the PMI can be …
