Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) stimulates translation initiation by binding simultaneously to the mRNA poly(A) tail and eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4G (eIF4G). PABP activity is regulated by PABP-interacting (Paip) proteins. Paip1 binds PABP and stimulates translation by an unknown mechanism. Here, we describe the interaction between Paip1 and eIF3, which is direct, RNA independent, and mediated via the eIF3g (p44) subunit. Stimulation of translation by Paip1 in vivo was decreased upon deletion of the N-terminal sequence containing the eIF3-binding domain and upon silencing of PABP or several eIF3 subunits. We also show the formation of ternary complexes composed of Paip1-PABP-eIF4G and …

Victorian Organ, Christine Dunn
Victorian Organ, Christine Dunn
Theses
This paper is a companion piece to my short film, “Victorian Organ”. This film is an effort to contextualize the mechanical, or man-made, within nature. It is an assertion that there really is no "man vs. nature"- (a radically illogical and inherently self-destructive notion), but only man as nature, in which case, alienation and disharmony ultimately lies in our own self-perception. The impulse to identify a relationship between the mechanical and organic is inspired not only by my observations of our human society, but as a way to decode my own inner workings –an urge to reconcile seemingly major dichotomies …

Factors Associated With Hydrocarbon Ingestion In Children, Emaduddin Siddiqui, Junaid Razzak, Farah Naz, Sabeena Jalal Khan
Department of Emergency Medicine
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the types of hydrocarbon ingested by children and identify factors associated with hydrocarbons ingestion.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: It was a hospital based case control study in which medical records of sixty seven children with hydrocarbon ingestion, admitted through emergency department between January 2001 to December 2005 of Aga Khan Hospital were reviewed. Variables such as age, sex, types of hydrocarbons, amount ingested, socioeconomic status, family size, number of children, type of containers, trend of ingestion during hot weather, length of stay at hospital along with the outcomes were evaluated.
RESULTS: Out of 67 patients, 53 (79%) were …
Estimating Evolutionary Dynamics Of Cleavage Site Peptides Among H5ha Avian Influenza Employing Mathematical Information Theory Approaches, Sherry Dadgar
Theses
Estimating evolutionary conservation of cleavage site peptides among HA protein of all strains facilitates vaccine development against pandemic influenza. Conserved epitopes may be useful for diagnosis of animals infected with the influenza virus, and preventing their spread in other regions [ 1]. In the preliminary stage of this study, in silico analysis of hemagglutinin was applied to predict potential cleavage sites of each strain employing
SigCleave [2] and SignalP 3.0 server [3]. The second stage of the study focused on analyzing the structure of connecting peptides of hemagglutinin cleavage sites based on the availability of the existing experimental data. Our …

The Value Of Intraoperative Examination Of Axillary Sentinel Nodes In Carcinoma Of The Breast., Gordon F. Schwartz, Lauren S. Krill, Juan P. Palazzo, Abhijit Dasgupta
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Abstract Axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has become the standard of care for T1-2, N-0, M-0 carcinoma of the breast. However, the accuracy of frozen section in the intra-operative examination of sentinel nodes (SN) remains controversial. The senior author has championed the use of the intraoperative examination of SN by frozen section ex-amination from the inception of its use, and we present our experience with frozen section examination of SN, confirming that this technique is both practical and highly accurate. Materials & Methods: Between 2000 and 2007, 236 SLNB procedures were performed that were read as “fro-zen section negative.” …
Highly Qualified Teacher Status And The Reading Achievement Of Students With Disabilities, A. Helene Robinson
Highly Qualified Teacher Status And The Reading Achievement Of Students With Disabilities, A. Helene Robinson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
With the advent of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, many changes are occurring in the field of special education. More than ever before, students with disabilities are being included in each state’s NCLB required assessment to determine adequate yearly progress. This has resulted in an influx of students with disabilities enrolled in intensive reading classes in the schools. Educators, administrators, and reading coaches are attempting to figure out the best way to educate these students to achieve the reading gains that NCLB requires. The purpose of this study was to examine factors believed to affect reading achievement of …
A Case Study: The Preparedness Of Adult Education Students For College-Level Education, Julie Gibbons Griffin
A Case Study: The Preparedness Of Adult Education Students For College-Level Education, Julie Gibbons Griffin
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Each year adult education programs have served over three million people. Approximately 40% of these students aged 24 years and younger who were economically and educationally disadvantaged have benefited from postsecondary education. Although adult education programs have offered high school diploma (HSD) and General Educational Development (GED) credentials to the adult population including young adults, many of the graduates who enrolled in higher education failed to enter at college-level. Because most non-traditional students left college during their first year, their preparation for college-level education had a dire consequence for not only their success, but that of society as well. The …

Breeding Bettas: An Interactive Study To The Breeding And Caring Of Siamese Fighting Fish, Ali Alquraini
Theses
Siamese fighting fish also known as “Betta fish” is one of the most well known fresh water fish around the world. Their beautiful colors and long finnage is one of the reasons in which most people are familiar with these fish. Also their unique labyrinth organ that helps this fish to get oxygen from the air made it easy for people to adopt. Over the past five years, I have been adopting Bettas from different countries around the world such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and United States. During this time I have met a lot of Betta lovers which made …

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports
This report presents Enrollment Forecasts prepared by the Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC) exploring three possible scenarios for BSD enrollment during the next 17 years based on different assumptions about future net migration and fertility rates. The study includes analysis of population, housing and enrollment trends affecting the District in recent years and forecasts of district-wide enrollments by grade level for the 2009-10 to 2025-26 school years.

Roofing Foreman Dies From Telescopic Boom Lift Fall, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Falls
On a winter day in 2008, a male roofer/ foreman died after falling from a telescopic boom lift. He and four other roofing crew members were installing a new roof at a residence undergoing restoration. They had arrived at the job site at approximately 7:45 AM.

Beyond Risk Factors: The Theoretical Contextualization Of Illicit Adhd Medication Use Among High School Students, William Christopher Watkins
Beyond Risk Factors: The Theoretical Contextualization Of Illicit Adhd Medication Use Among High School Students, William Christopher Watkins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prescription ADHD medication has been shown to be on the rise as a drug of abuse among young people. Unlike other drugs that serve only the purpose of achieving a high, this particular substance can also be perceived as useful and beneficial by those who abuse it. It is these positive attributes given to the illicit use of these drugs that make them so dangerous, especially in the hands of youths. To date extant research has made little effort to contextualize this type of drug use within theories of deviance. This study looks to fill that void as well as …
