Infant-Feeding Practices Of Low-Income Vietnamese American Women, Yashmi Mistry, Marjorie Freedman, Kathleen Sweeney, Clarie Hollenbeck

Faculty Publications

Healthy People 2010 breastfeeding goals include 50% exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months. In California, US, Santa Clara County Women, Infants, and Children (SCCWIC) data indicated Asian participants had low (5.6%) 6-month breastfeeding rates. To examine infant-feeding practices, Vietnamese breastfeeding peer counselors surveyed 133 Vietnamese SCCWIC participants (≥ 18 years old, nonpregnant, < 28 months postpartum) using a structured questionnaire regarding intentions, attitudes, and subjective norms toward breastfeeding. Results indicated that 75% initiated breastfeeding in the hospital (33% exclusively, 42% partially), and 25% exclusively formula fed. At survey time, 49% had terminated breastfeeding (average duration 4.4 months). Feeding intentions during pregnancy predicted feeding method used (P < .001). Most prenatal advice was from SCCWIC employees, friends, and doctors who supported breastfeeding. Most postnatal advice was from nurses who supported breastfeeding and bottle-feeding equally. Stronger control beliefs, peer counseling, and education were correlated with breastfeeding (P < .001). Improved postdelivery hospital advice may further increase breastfeeding initiation and duration.

The Ceo's Marketing Manifesto, Nirmalya Kumar Nov 2008

The Ceo's Marketing Manifesto, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

CEOs are frustrated by marketing's inability to deliver results. Has the profession lost its relevance? It is argued that, while the function of marketing has lost ground, the importance of marketing as a mind-set geared toward customer focus has gained momentum. Here we challenge marketers to change their role from tactical implementers of traditional marketing functions - the tactical 4 P's - to orchestrating organization-wide, transformational initiatives aimed at profitably delivering value to customers.

Females of Anopheles gambiae Giles normally oviposit in a large number of fresh, small, sunlit, and spatially spread temporary pools. Such pools are associated with lower levels of predation compared to large, longer-lasting habitats. We compared oviposition levels on preferred (water collected from natural anopheline larval habitats) and non-preferred (distilled water) aqueous substrates by gravid females that contained different densities of conspecific eggs or early and late instar larvae. The presence of conspecific larvae, but not eggs, had a positive or negative effect on the ovipositional responses of gravid An. gambiae females, depending on the quality (preferred or non-preferred by …

Recreating Identity: A Grounded Theory Study Of Changing Mental Models And Response To Intervention, Theresa L. Pulos Nov 2008

Recreating Identity: A Grounded Theory Study Of Changing Mental Models And Response To Intervention, Theresa L. Pulos

Education Doctoral

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of2004 permits school districts to use an alternative process to establish eligibility for special education services. Response to Intervention (RTI) procedures represent a significant change in thinking and practice. The purpose of this study was to understand the cognitive changes that accompany the implementation ofRTI. Specifically, the relationship between school psychologists' mental models regarding the assessment ofleaming disabilities and their roles as experts in traditional psychoeducational assessment was studied. The study employed a qualitative methodology. Participants included experienced school psychologists. Interview data was transcribed, coded, and analyzed in accordance with the constant comparative …

School-Based Health Centers And Seat Time; What Is The Intersection?, Maureen Van Cura Nov 2008

School-Based Health Centers And Seat Time; What Is The Intersection?, Maureen Van Cura

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this research was to understand the relationship between SchoolBased Health Centers (SBHC) and academic outcomes such as attendance. A quasiexperimental research design was used to compare rates of early dismissal and "loss of seat time" for students who received SBHC and traditional school nursing services with students who received only traditional school nursing services. This study was a secondary data analysis of764 "walk in" visits during a three week period of time in two urban schools in western New York State. Both schools provided school nursing services, however; only one school offered the option to enroll in …

Teacher Absenteeism: Its Relationship To Student Performance On State Assessments In English/Language Arts In Grades Three, Five, And Seven, C. Michael Robinson

Education Doctoral

The topic for the study is teacher absenteeism. The literature review included a discussion of the importance of the study, the research base on teacher attendance and student performance, patterns and trends in teacher absenteeism, cost implications for teacher absenteeism, impact of teachers' absenteeism on student performance and school operations, impact on urban schools, and intervention strategies to reduce absenteeism or mitigate the negative impact when teacher absences do occur. The hypothesis of the study is that there is a significant negative relationship between the extent, the reason for, or the pattern of teachers being absent from the classroom and …

Do Current Teaching Practices On Multicultural Students With Autism Demonstrate Culturally Responsive Teaching?, Keith Mcgriff Nov 2008

Do Current Teaching Practices On Multicultural Students With Autism Demonstrate Culturally Responsive Teaching?, Keith Mcgriff

Education Doctoral

Autism is a disorder present from birth or very early in childhood that affects social interaction, communication of ideas and feelings, imagination, and relationships with others (National Research Council, 2001 ). Most of the research has categorized students with autism according to disability and failed to look at the importance of culture. Such limitations may reflect a lack of awareness of cultural issues and the ways that these issues affect students with autism and their families. Also, such missing information may compromise the quality of the fields of professionals who work with multicultural students (Obiakor, Wilder, and Dyches, 2004). Professionals …

Perceptions, Motivations, And Concerns Of Post-Secondary Faculty Regarding Implementing Service-Learning Pedagogy Into Curriculum, Cynthia P. Smith Nov 2008

Perceptions, Motivations, And Concerns Of Post-Secondary Faculty Regarding Implementing Service-Learning Pedagogy Into Curriculum, Cynthia P. Smith

Education Doctoral

Faculty in post-secondary educational institutions is directly involved in designing, implementi!lg and directing coursework components. The degree of the coursework's impact on student learning can be attributed in part to these instructional gatekeepers. Extensive research indicates that service-learning tenets incorporated into curriculum have enhanced student learning experiences. Nevertheless, faculty inclusion of service-learning curricular components in higher education remains marginal. The purpose of this research was to study post-secondary faculty perceptions, motivations, and concerns from three local institutions of higher education regarding the phenomena that attracts or deters faculty from participating in service-learning pedagogy. This study concludes that more than one …

A Study Of Relationships Between Levels Of Cultural Competence Among School Principals And Levels Of Organizational Cultural Competence Of Their Schools, Diantha Beth Joiner Watts Nov 2008

A Study Of Relationships Between Levels Of Cultural Competence Among School Principals And Levels Of Organizational Cultural Competence Of Their Schools, Diantha Beth Joiner Watts

Education Doctoral

Changing demographics of urban school districts toward student populations that are more culturally and ethnically diverse raises the issue of whether educators are able to effectively interact with students and families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Additionally, school leaders are expected to support teachers and provide a school environment that promotes acceptance of cultural differences and meets the needs of students from various cultural backgrounds. This study examines the relationship between levels of self-reported cultural competence among 39 RCSD principals as measured by Hammer's Intercultural Developmental Inventory (IDI) (Hammer, 1998) and their respective school's levels of organizational cultural competence as determined …

3d Mprage Improves Classification Of Cortical Lesions In Multiple Sclerosis, F Nelson, A Poonawalla, P Hou, J S Wolinsky, P A Narayana

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Gray matter lesions are known to be common in multiple sclerosis (MS) and are suspected to play an important role in disease progression and clinical disability. A combination of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, double-inversion recovery (DIR), and phase-sensitive inversion recovery (PSIR), has been used for detection and classification of cortical lesions. This study shows that high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition with gradient echo (MPRAGE) improves the classification of cortical lesions by allowing more accurate anatomic localization of lesion morphology.

METHODS: 11 patients with MS with previously identified cortical lesions were scanned using DIR, PSIR, and 3D MPRAGE. …

Milestone Payments Or Royalties? Contract Design For R&D Licensing, Pascale Crama, Bert De Reyck, Zeger Degraeve Nov 2008

Milestone Payments Or Royalties? Contract Design For R&D Licensing, Pascale Crama, Bert De Reyck, Zeger Degraeve

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study how innovators can optimally design licensing contracts when there is incomplete information on the licensee's valuation of the innovation, and limited control over the licensee's development efforts. A licensing contract typically contains an up-front payment, milestone payments at successful completion of a project phase, and royalties on sales. We use principal-agent models to formulate the licensor's contracting problem, and we find that under adverse selection, the optimal contract structure changes with the licensee's valuation of the innovation. As the licensee's valuation increases, the licensor's optimal level of involvement in the development-directly or through royalties-should decrease. Only a risk-averse …

Configuring Expert Knowledge: The Consultant As Sector Specialist, Robin Fincham, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Karen Handley, Andrew Sturdy Nov 2008

Configuring Expert Knowledge: The Consultant As Sector Specialist, Robin Fincham, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Karen Handley, Andrew Sturdy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study defines an aspect of consultant knowledge that provides credibility without claiming unrealistic status for a field like consulting. Our focus is the "sector knowledge" that consultants accumulate which derives from repeated assignments in the industrial sector in which the client organization resides. This has been under-researched partly because of an emphasis oil knowledge as technique and method. But knowledge configured around the sector enables consultants to play the role of the outside expert and draw oil a language and experiences held in common with the client. The paper explores the role of consultants as sector intermediaries through a …

Customer Integration: A Key To An Implementation Perspective Of Service Provision, Sabine Moeller Nov 2008

Customer Integration: A Key To An Implementation Perspective Of Service Provision, Sabine Moeller

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A paradigm shift in marketing seems to be underway. Inspired by Vargo and Lusch's (2004a) proposal of service dominant logic, customer integration is proposed as a key component of marketing. Three stages of service provision are identified: facilities, transformation. and usage. The stages differ in terms of resource origin (company or customer), autonomy of decision-making (integrative or autonomous), and value (potential value, value-in-transformation. and value-in-use). These perspectives, which are synthesized in the study framework, shed light on the process of service provision and direct or indirect knowledge application (Vargo and Lusch 2004a). The author aims to show that in the …

Coping Difficulties After Hospitalization, Judith Fitzgerald Miller, Linda Piacentine, Marianne E. Weiss Nov 2008

Coping Difficulties After Hospitalization, Judith Fitzgerald Miller, Linda Piacentine, Marianne E. Weiss

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Coping difficulties of 113 adults 3 weeks after hospital discharge were identified using the Post-Discharge Coping Difficulty Scale and a brief focused telephone interview (11-item guide). Overall, low difficulty scores were reported (M = 23.9, SD = 18.2, range = 0 to 100). Qualitative data reveal specific coping difficulties in the categories of stressors, specific difficulties, caring for self, managing the condition, family, advice needed, contact with the health care system, and what they wished they knew before discharge. A core theme of biographical reconstruction emerged.
