Sttructure-Function Correlations Of The Antagonist Effects Of Flavonoids Present In Medicinal Plants On Oxidative Reactive Molecules, Deema Khalil Al Jayousi Jan 2008

Sttructure-Function Correlations Of The Antagonist Effects Of Flavonoids Present In Medicinal Plants On Oxidative Reactive Molecules, Deema Khalil Al Jayousi

Theses

Flavonoids are phenolic compounds with significant antioxidant properties. The propensity of a flavonoid to inhibit free-radical mediated events is governed by its chemical structure. Since these compounds are based on the flavan nucleus, the number, positions, and types of substitutions influence radical scavenging and chelating activity. The main objective of this thesis was to establish structure-activity relationships of flavonoids by means of experimental and computational techniques.

Initially, a series of dietary flavonoids belonging to the most representative families (flavonols; myricetin, quercetin, morin, kaempferol, and 3-hydrxoyflavone, flavones; flavone and flavanones; naringenin) were studied during the reaction with DPPH radical following addition …

Of the 602 people surveyed to be living in Quequeña, blood samples …

Voices Of Poverty: Perspectives Of One School's Student, Teachers. And Parents, Kristen Weatherwax Jan 2008

Voices Of Poverty: Perspectives Of One School's Student, Teachers. And Parents, Kristen Weatherwax

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study examines the challenges of poverty through the stories of students and their families in one Michigan elementary school. The goal was to explore the needs, challenges, and obstacles confronting children in poverty in a small Michigan town by focusing on the perspectives and experiences of low-income students and their parents/guardians. Two families and one teacher were interviewed in depth, using open-ended, semi-structured interview techniques. Two case studies were constructed from the content of the interviews, and key thematic findings that emerged revealed ongoing stress, fear, sadness, and frustration with which the children lived, as well as strong …

Kyoto Comes To Georgia: How International Environmental Initiatives Foster Sustainable Commerce In Small Town America, Peter A. Appel, T. Rick Irvin, Julie M. Mcentire, J. Chris Rabon Jan 2008

Kyoto Comes To Georgia: How International Environmental Initiatives Foster Sustainable Commerce In Small Town America, Peter A. Appel, T. Rick Irvin, Julie M. Mcentire, J. Chris Rabon

Scholarly Works

This Article posits that in response to adoption of Kyoto Protocol targets by governments and multi-national corporations overseas that comprise significant portions of the global economy as well as global financial markets, businesses and state and local governments in the U.S. are also being driven by necessity to undertake sustainable commerce initiatives. Businesses in the EU and other Kyoto-compliant regions that have implemented sustainable commerce programs now require overseas vendors and suppliers-including those in the U.S.-to implement their own sustainable commerce initiatives as a condition of approved supplier status. New EU environmental regulations developed in part to meet Kyoto-specified emissions …

Baby Signs: Caregiver Perceptions Of Their Use And Benefit To Children, Leah Catherine Legere Jan 2008

Baby Signs: Caregiver Perceptions Of Their Use And Benefit To Children, Leah Catherine Legere

LSU Master's Theses

Gesture use is a precursor to spoken language, and children who exhibit frequent use of gesture have higher rates of speech comprehension and production when tested between 13 and 15 months of age (Bates et al, 1989). The purpose of this study was to learn more about caregivers’ perceptions of the use and benefits of sign to their children. Fifty-three caregivers were recruited for the study, and 33 (62%) of these caregivers reported that they had used or were currently using baby signs with one of their children. Six (18%) of these caregivers also reported that their children presented developmental …

Durable And Reusable Antimicrobial Textiles, Leila Elizabeth Bonin Jan 2008

Durable And Reusable Antimicrobial Textiles, Leila Elizabeth Bonin

LSU Master's Theses

Antimicrobial textiles are a large research focus in the textile industry. There is an apparent need for creating reusable and durable antimicrobial textiles. Most of the textiles with antimicrobial properties effective against Staphylococcus aureus are disposable. To address the issue, two types of biopolymer solutions were created in a USDA lab. Both solutions displayed antimicrobial properties. A medium weight, plain weave cotton sheeting was used as the test fabric. Samples of the sheeting were cut, treated, and tested to determine their efficacy as antimicrobial textiles. The tests performed included tensile deformation, bending, shearing, compression, surface friction, surface roughness, and treatment …

Neuronal Regeneration In Denervated Muscle Following Sensory And Muscular Neurotization, Shahryar Noordin, Mahmood Ahmed, Rasham Rehman, Tashfeen Ahmad, Pervaiz Hashmi

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Background and Purpose: Neurotization of denervated muscles has been shown to improve muscle bulk, but the neuronal regeneration response has not been compared previously in different surgical techniques of neurotization. Thus, using a rat model of experimental skeletal muscle denervation, we studied neuronal regeneration following sensory neurotization by two methods: sensory nerve to motor branch of muscle and direct sensory nerve implantation to muscle.
Material and Methods: The lateral head of the gas-trocnemius muscle was denervated in 36 rats, of which the first 12 served as denervated controls. In the second group of 12, the sural nerve was anastomozed to …

An Outcomes Assessment Of Two Therapeutic Group Homes Serving Children With Reactive Attachment Disorder In A Rural Community, Brooke Rose Spangler

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Archival data collected on 35 4-12-year-old children, each of whom completed treatment for reactive attachment disorder (RAD), was used to evaluate a treatment program in a rural northwestern community. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) (Achenbach, 1991) and Youth Outcomes Questionnaire (Y-OQ) (Burlingame, Wells, & Lambert, 1996) were completed by coding behaviors early in treatment and late in treatment from behavioral records. A correlational design was used, and t-test, repeated measures and fixed factor analyses of variance were conducted. Results showed that there was an overall decrease in the amount of maladaptive behaviors at the conclusion of residential treatment for attachment …

Pre-Commencement Discovery And The Odex Litigation: Copyright Versus Confidentiality Or Is It Privacy?, Sze Shun, George Wei Jan 2008

Pre-Commencement Discovery And The Odex Litigation: Copyright Versus Confidentiality Or Is It Privacy?, Sze Shun, George Wei

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article examines whether internet service providers are under any duty to disclose the names of subscribers whose accounts can be shown to be associated with infringing activity. This question involves tension between the economic interests of copyright owners/licensees, the privacy interests of internet users and the economic interests of the internet service provider. This tension in turn raises age-old problems of balance and proportionality between privacy, confidentiality and other competing rights and freedoms as well as the interests of society at large. The article concludes by briefly touching on privacy areas from outside of copyright and the Internet: including …

Rationalising The Regime Of Compulsory Patent Licensing By The Essential Facilities Doctrine, Kung-Chung Liu Jan 2008

Rationalising The Regime Of Compulsory Patent Licensing By The Essential Facilities Doctrine, Kung-Chung Liu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Where intellectual property rights (IP) owned by dominant undertakings are indispensable and impossible for other market players to replicate or acquire, the refusal to grant license to use such IP may cause serious harm to vital public interests, such as the supply of life-saving drugs, of technology that protects the environment, the compliance with de jure or de facto industry standards and the preservation of competition in markets with network effects or strong need for compatibility and interoperability

Conscious And Unconscious Processes In Human Desire, J Andrade, J May, Dk Kavanagh Jan 2008

Conscious And Unconscious Processes In Human Desire, J Andrade, J May, Dk Kavanagh

School of Psychology

Elaborated Intrusion theory (Kavanagh, Andrade & May 2005) distinguishes between unconscious, associative processes as the precursors of desire, and controlled processes of cognitive elaboration that lead to conscious sensory images of the target of desire and associated affect. We argue that these mental images play a key role in motivating human behavior. Consciousness is functional in that it allows competing goals to be compared and evaluated. The role of effortful cognitive processes in desire helps to explain the different time courses of craving and physiological withdrawal.

Indian Law Clinics And Externship Symposium Roundtable Discussion: Lawyering For Indigenous People, Tribal Law Journal

Tribal Law Journal

Several native and non-native Indian Law clinicians and scholars participated in a roundtable discussion on June 22, 2007 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to discuss lawyering for indigenous people. The attendees were organized into three different groups: discussants, respondents, and participants. The discussants began the dialogue and discussed their experiences in representing tribes to representing individual native clients in various areas of law. They discussed what it means as a lawyer "to do no harm" and their roles and challenges in teaching students how to serve native populations. The respondents provided their responses to the various topics presented by the discussants. …

The Xhosa And The Truth And Reconciliation Commission: African Ways, Douglas H.M. Carver Jan 2008

The Xhosa And The Truth And Reconciliation Commission: African Ways, Douglas H.M. Carver

Tribal Law Journal

The author begins by providing a conceptual framework for indigenous people generally and then focuses on indigenous people in South Africa. Mr. Carver then discusses the culture and customs of the Xhosa, one of the main ethnic groups from the Republic of South Africa. He then discusses the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), set up in South Africa after the fall of the apartheid regime, which was meant to rebuild a society divided by racial and ethnic lines. The author explains how the Xhosa concept of "ubuntu" – encompassing African concepts of justice, harmony and reconciliation — became a core …

Shadow War Scholarship, Indigenous Legal Tradition, And Modern Law In Indian Country, Christine Zuni Cruz Jan 2008

Shadow War Scholarship, Indigenous Legal Tradition, And Modern Law In Indian Country, Christine Zuni Cruz

Tribal Law Journal

In this essay, Tribal Law Journal Editor-in-Chief Zuni Cruz comments on the purpose of the Tribal Law Journal. She borrows the term "shadow war" from the Zapatistas' use of the Internet as she describes the Journal's endeavor to make Indigenous law explicit and to promote mental sovereignty. She challenges and invites others who write about the law of Indigenous Peoples to join in making legal scholarship in this area accessible to the public, especially the Indigenous public, and to create a depository of thought, rejecting the scattering of thought, by publishing legal scholarship in the global, publicly accessible e-journal, that …

Toda Cambia Y Todo Sigue Siendo Igual (The More Things Change, The More The Stay The Same): How Fifteen Years Later The Constant Threat Of An End To The Zapatistas Continues To Justify Their Means, Pamela Genghini Hernandez

Tribal Law Journal

This article gives a chronological account of the events pre-dating the uprising of January 1, 1994 and the Zapatista struggle through the years. The author examines these events in light of indigenous self-determination, taking into consideration conditions within Mexico, to defend the course of action taken by the EZLN as a means of creating a space for themselves within Mexican society. The author argues the current state of federal Mexican law and international law do not leave Indigenous Peoples, including the EZLN, viable options for resolving injustices committed against them. She also provides an overview of the structure that the …

Integrating Eastern Philosophy Into Western Psychology: A Primer For Students Of Applied Psychology, Erica Hurley, Jennifer L. Callahan Jan 2008

Integrating Eastern Philosophy Into Western Psychology: A Primer For Students Of Applied Psychology, Erica Hurley, Jennifer L. Callahan

Modern Psychological Studies

A review of undergraduate texts marketed as providing an introduction to clinical psychology located no chapters devoted to the emerging practice of integrating Eastern philosophy with Western psychological practices. Thus, this paper provides students with a primer of this important emerging area by reviewing cultural differences that challenge the successful integration of Eastern philosophy with Western psychology, before focusing specifically on Taoist philosophy and its implications for Western psychotherapy. The congruence of Taoism with the "common" factors of Western psychotherapy (i.e., those mechanisms of change thought to transcend theoretical psychotherapy orientation) will be discussed, as will congruence with "specific" cognitive …
