Topical Application Of Entry Inhibitors As "Virustats" To Prevent Sexual Transmission Of Hiv Infection., Michael M Lederman, Robin Jump, Heather A Pilch-Cooper, Michael Root, Scott F Sieg Jan 2008

Topical Application Of Entry Inhibitors As "Virustats" To Prevent Sexual Transmission Of Hiv Infection., Michael M Lederman, Robin Jump, Heather A Pilch-Cooper, Michael Root, Scott F Sieg

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

With the continuing march of the AIDS epidemic and little hope for an effective vaccine in the near future, work to develop a topical strategy to prevent HIV infection is increasingly important. This stated, the track record of large scale "microbicide" trials has been disappointing with nonspecific inhibitors either failing to protect women from infection or even increasing HIV acquisition. Newer strategies that target directly the elements needed for viral entry into cells have shown promise in non-human primate models of HIV transmission and as these agents have not yet been broadly introduced in regions of highest HIV prevalence, they …

Turning To God To Forgive: More Than Meets The Eye., Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso, Annette Mahoney, Kenneth I. Pargament

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Adults (N = 89; 59% female) recruited from divorce records reported levels of turning to God to forgive (TGF) themselves, their ex-spouse, and God for their divorce when it occurred (Time 1, Tl) and one year later (Time 2, T2). Seventy-five percent of participants reported TGF. T1 TGF predicted higher levels of T2 positive spiritual emotions, T2 verbal aggression by the participant and ex-spouse, and T2 demonization of ex-spouse. Participants were grouped according to pattern of TGF over time (Resolved, Chronic, Delayed, and Low). Repeated measures ANOVAs showed that the Resolved group reported greater declines in demonizing the divorce relative …

A Dissonant Mission: Stephen Neill, Amy Carmichael, And Missionary Conflict In South India, Dyron Daughrity

All Faculty Open Access Publications

In 1924, eminent Church historian and missiologist Stephen Neill began his career as a missionary to south India under the supervision of the celebrated Amy Carmichael. What seemed like a match made in heaven resulted in a bitter parting of ways. How could such a promising mission partnership go so wrong? This paper draws upon primary research in order to examine this intriguing case study of conflict in the mission field. The paper will also introduce questions and implications that arise from the study of this incident. The paper is comprised of two components. We will first unpack the incident, …

Primary Neuron/Astrocyte Co-Culture On Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films: A Template For Studying Astrocyte-Mediated Oxidative Stress In Neurons, Srivatsan Kidambi, Ilsoon Lee, Christina Chan Jan 2008

Primary Neuron/Astrocyte Co-Culture On Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films: A Template For Studying Astrocyte-Mediated Oxidative Stress In Neurons, Srivatsan Kidambi, Ilsoon Lee, Christina Chan

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

We engineered patterned co-cultures of primary neurons and astrocytes on polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films without the aid of adhesive proteins/ligands to study the oxidative stress mediated by astrocytes on neuronal cells. A number of studies have explored engineering co-culture of neurons and astrocytes predominantly using cell lines rather than primary cells owing to the difficulties involved in attaching primary cells onto synthetic surfaces. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of patterned co-culture of primary neurons and astrocytes for studying neuronal metabolism. In our study, we used synthetic polymers, namely poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride) (PDAC) and sulfonated poly(styrene) (SPS) as the polycation …

Weyerhauser's Implications For Punitive Damages Litigation, Nickolai G. Levin Jan 2008

Weyerhauser's Implications For Punitive Damages Litigation, Nickolai G. Levin

UC Law Business Journal

In Weyerhaeuser Co. v. Ross-Simmons Hardwood Lumber Co., 127 U.S. 1069 (2007), the Supreme Court addressed the antitrust claim of "predatory bidding"-i.e., that a manufacturer paid too much for an "input." Although the Ninth Circuit allowed predatory-bidding liability to be based on the jury's subjective estimation that the defendant paid more than "necessary" for an input, the Supreme Court reversed, holding that the objective, two-part "predatory pricing" test from Brooke Group Ltd. v. Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., 509 U.S. 209 (1993), should govern predatory-bidding claims instead. Otherwise, the Court explained, there would be a serious risk of chilling procompetitive …

Exporting Risk: Global Implications Of The Securitization Of U.S. Housing Debt, Aaron Unterman Jan 2008

Exporting Risk: Global Implications Of The Securitization Of U.S. Housing Debt, Aaron Unterman

UC Law Business Journal

The process of securitization has revolutionized the global debt market creating vast investment opportunities while fundamentally altering the dynamics of lending risk. Asset securitization allows risks to be transferred from, mortgage lenders to investors through the sale of mortgage-backed securities. This detachment of risk has led to a lack of accountability within the industry and the creation of the infamous U.S. sub prime mortgage market. This piece examines the effect of securitization on the international capital market focusing on the legal and economic implications of the rise and fall of the U.S. housing market. It argues that this failure is …

Defining Substantial Activity: Helping Tax-Exempt Hospitals Keep Their Tax-Exempt Status, Kevin Leo Jan 2008

Defining Substantial Activity: Helping Tax-Exempt Hospitals Keep Their Tax-Exempt Status, Kevin Leo

UC Law Business Journal

Joint ventures between tax-exempt hospitals and for-profit organizations have become a common mechanism for hospitals to acquire new sources of revenue and expand their health care services without completely relying on more traditional sources of funding. Joint ventures between tax-exempt organizations and for-profit entities can lead to unfavorable tax consequences for the exempt organization if the venture is not structured in accordance with the rules and regulations provided by the Internal Revenue Service. IRS Revenue Ruling 2004-51 held that an exempt organization would maintain its exempt status as long as it only contributed an insubstantial amount of its assets or …

Understanding Hedge Fund Adviser Regulation, Thierry Olivier Desmet Jan 2008

Understanding Hedge Fund Adviser Regulation, Thierry Olivier Desmet

UC Law Business Journal

The hedge fund industry has grown tremendously and gained much influence on our nation's capital markets in the past decade. Helping fuel this growth in size and influence has been the fact that many hedge funds have sought investments from less affluent and sophisticated investors than in the past. In addition, the number of securities enforcement cases filed against hedge funds has increased. As a result, many have called for some form of regulatory oversight to protect the investing public and reduce market risks. This article focuses on the regulations imposed on hedge fund advisers as well as the controversial …

Comparison Of Two Treatment Conditions For Young Children With Speech Sound Disorders, Megan Overby, A. Lynn Williams, John Bernthal

ETSU Faculty Works

The purpose of this study was to compare treatment outcomes between stimulus presentation conditions to children with moderate to severe SSD: a traditional paper presentation versus a computer software generated presentation. The participants were four monolingual kindergarten children with moderate to severe SSD. A multiple baseline across behaviors single subject design was employed in the study. Two non-stimulable, non-cognate sounds from two different manner categories were selected as sound targets. One sound error was treated using paper stimuli presented in a traditional paper table-top presentation (TAB condition) while the other sound error was treated using stimuli presented on the computer …
