The Relevance Of Confucian Philosophy To Modern Concepts Of Leadership And Followership, Sujeeta Dhakhwa, Stacey Enriquez

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The purpose of this paper is to discuss Confucian philosophy and compare its relevance to modern concepts of leadership and followership. It will demonstrate that both exemplify the same ideology, though separated by centuries of history. The paper first introduces the reader to the history of Chinese government and the life of Confucius as a teacher. Then it will expand on the importance of understanding his philosophy on leadership and followership as well as its impact on China’s political and cultural development. It will then examine three Confucian teachings on leadership and three on followership. Finally, with this information, it …

Assessing Babesia Microti Sensu Lato In Small Mammals In Northeast Florida, Kyla Marie Savick

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Babesia microti is the causative agent of human babesiosis. Black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are the only proven vector and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) serve as the main reservoir in northeastern United States. The aim of the present study was to determine if B. microti is present in small mammals in southeastern United States and to compare strains found in this study to reference strains from around the world. Blood samples were obtained from cotton mice, cotton rats, a flying squirrel, golden mice, rice rats, Virginia opossums, wood rats, and raccoons in northeastern Florida. DNA was extracted from the blood, and …

A Review Of Barriers To Biofuel Market Development In The United States, Karl R. Rábago Jan 2008

A Review Of Barriers To Biofuel Market Development In The United States, Karl R. Rábago

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In recent years, biofuel markets have begun a resurgence. At one time, biofuels were the only way humanity obtained useful energy, but they were almost totally displaced by fossil fuels during the last century. Now, due to a range of drivers, they have begun a small but seemingly solid comeback. This Article reviews the remaining barriers to full commercial success for biofuels in the United States with an emphasis on transportation fuels. While recent success has been impressive, markets for transportation biofuels are hardly “self-sustaining” in the purest sense of the concept. The author does not seek to disparage the …

Expanding Restitution: Liability For Unrequested Benefits, Ariel Porat Jan 2008

Expanding Restitution: Liability For Unrequested Benefits, Ariel Porat

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Suppose Owner can improve his property at a cost of 15, thereby creating benefits of 10 for himself and 10 for his Neighbors. Since each Neighbor expects to reap the benefits regardless of whether she pays Owner or not for this enhancement, all Neighbors may refuse to share the burden and the welfare enhancing activity will not take place. This paper advocates correcting this failure by recognizing an Expanded Duty of Restitution (“EDR”) that obligates recipients of benefits, under certain, well-defined conditions, to compensate benefactors for unrequested benefits voluntarily conferred upon them. Part I of the paper compares the law’s …

Climate Change Policy: Why Germany Leads And The United States Lags, Kristin Kesling Jan 2008

Climate Change Policy: Why Germany Leads And The United States Lags, Kristin Kesling

Master's Theses and Capstones

Why is climate change a top priority on the political agenda in Germany and not a top priority on the political agenda in the United States? This study seeks to answer this question by examining the evolution of climate change policy in both countries. Analyzing Germany's and America's environmental movement, the thesis points to several theories which include the European Union and cultural values. However, it is the nations' political structures/institutions and their post WWII foreign policy views that most determine where climate change policy stands on each country's political agenda. The analysis concludes with a possible outlook on America's …

Career Self-Efficacy Psycho-Educational Group Model For Emerging Adults Using Positive Psychology Interventions, Ann C. Strachan Jan 2008

Career Self-Efficacy Psycho-Educational Group Model For Emerging Adults Using Positive Psychology Interventions, Ann C. Strachan

Master's Theses and Capstones

Emerging adulthood is becoming recognized in research as a unique developmental phase where young people explore role identity, relationships, values and beliefs, and their potential for different vocational pursuits. Career counseling is not often considered by individuals who are experiencing difficulties in making optimal career choices, yet evidence supports the need for career interventions that address both career search strategies and personal growth. Positive psychology's emphasis on developing one's strengths as a venue for career satisfaction and overall well-being is an approach that may best assist emerging adults to find out what they are good at doing, and develop positive …

Role Stress, Role Resources, And Mental Health Outcomes Among Recreational Runners, Leslie Dillon Jan 2008

Role Stress, Role Resources, And Mental Health Outcomes Among Recreational Runners, Leslie Dillon

Master's Theses and Capstones

Research on the impact of multiple role management on mental health outcomes has yet to consider the implications of a recreational athlete role. Role Conflict theory predicts that incorporating this additional role would increase potential for stress manifested as a mental health problem. Role Expansion theory predicts the social qualities of this additional role can be helpful in buffering against stress. In an exploratory study, a sample of recreational runners from New England were recruited by email to complete an online survey that evaluated role resources, role stress, depression, and alcohol problems. Results show no significant relationships between role stress, …

Evaluating The Serious And Violent Offender Reentry Initiative Within And Across The New England Region, Jessica A. Parent

Master's Theses and Capstones

The reentry of inmates back into the community is a hotly debated topic in society today. A descriptive study was conducted to analyze what mental health services were being provided to inmates who were participants in the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (SVORI). Additionally, barriers to implementing comprehensive mental health services, along with trends within and across the New England Region regarding mental health services were examined. The data collected was from three program evaluation surveys completed by Project Directors for SVORI in 2003, 2005, and 2006. The results indicate that the mental health services provided to SVORI participants …

Protistan Predation And Tce Biodegradation In A Fractured Rock Aquifer, Joseph J. Cunningham Iii. Jan 2008

Protistan Predation And Tce Biodegradation In A Fractured Rock Aquifer, Joseph J. Cunningham Iii.

Master's Theses and Capstones

Despite extensive research on the resources required to initiate dechlorination of trichloroethene (TCE), slow rates and stalling continue to be observed in situ. The majority of research on biodegradation of TCE has focused resource availability, while predation is poorly understood. Predation has the potential to significantly alter bacterial abundance, and can play an important role in selecting what species are present, and determine if the community is capable of mineralizing TCE. The impact of protistan predation on TCE biodegradation rates, and occurrence and length of stalls was measured in this experiment. When protists were inhibited, TCE was mineralized. Protistan predation …

An Investigation Of Recycled/Industrial Materials To Attenuate Hydrogen Sulfide Resulting From The Use Of Construction And Demolition Debris Fines, Kelly Ann Melendez Loaiza Jan 2008

An Investigation Of Recycled/Industrial Materials To Attenuate Hydrogen Sulfide Resulting From The Use Of Construction And Demolition Debris Fines, Kelly Ann Melendez Loaiza

Master's Theses and Capstones

One of the products of Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris recycling is C&D debris fines. C&D debris fines closely resemble soil. They may contain metal scraps, gypsum drywall, wood, soil, shingles, and concrete. Landfills have utilized C&D debris fines as alternative daily cover and/or shaping and grading material. The use of C&D debris fines has been linked to diffuse hydrogen sulfide emissions at landfills. Hydrogen sulfide emissions are not only a nuisance, but may pose a health hazard to landfill workers. This research investigates how recycled materials may be used to attenuate hydrogen sulfide emissions resulting from the use of …

Ecology, Distribution, Quantification, And Impact Of Introduced, Asian Porphyra Yezoensis F Yezoensis Ueda And Porphyra Yezoensis F Narawaensis A Miura In The Northwestern Atlantic, Jeremy C. Nettleton Jan 2008

Ecology, Distribution, Quantification, And Impact Of Introduced, Asian Porphyra Yezoensis F Yezoensis Ueda And Porphyra Yezoensis F Narawaensis A Miura In The Northwestern Atlantic, Jeremy C. Nettleton

Master's Theses and Capstones

Invasive species pose a threat to the balance of intertidal ecosystems. Recently, two forms of the non-native species, Porphyra yezoensis Ueda, were found at multiple sites between New York and Downcast Maine. A 2007 New England survey confirmed the presence of P. yezoensis f. yezoensis at nine sites, including two beyond its reported distribution. Porphyra yezoensis f narawaensis A. Miura was found at four sites in Long Island Sound. To assess the ecological impact of f. yezoensis and f. narawaensis on Northwest Atlantic macroalgal communities, monthly density and biomass data were gathered in 2008 from seven southern New England sites …

Molecular Targets Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) Within The Zebrafish Ovary: Insights Into Tcdd-Induced Endocrine Disruption And Reproductive Toxicity, Tisha C. King Heiden, Craig Struble, Matthew L. Rise, Martin J. Hessner, Reinhold J. Hutz, Michael J. Carvan Iii Jan 2008

Molecular Targets Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) Within The Zebrafish Ovary: Insights Into Tcdd-Induced Endocrine Disruption And Reproductive Toxicity, Tisha C. King Heiden, Craig Struble, Matthew L. Rise, Martin J. Hessner, Reinhold J. Hutz, Michael J. Carvan Iii

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

TCDD is a reproductive toxicant and endocrine disruptor, yet the mechanisms by which it causes these reproductive alterations are not fully understood. In order to provide additional insight into the molecular mechanisms that underlie TCDD's reproductive toxicity, we assessed TCDD-induced transcriptional changes in the ovary as they relate to previously described impacts on serum estradiol concentrations and altered follicular development in zebrafish. In silico computational approaches were used to correlate candidate regulatory motifs with observed changes in gene expression. Our data suggest that TCDD inhibits follicle maturation via attenuated gonadotropin responsiveness and/or depressed estradiol biosynthesis, and that interference of estrogen-regulated …
