Identifying Cluster Subtypes For Acquisition Of Sun Protection Habits Within Stages Of Change An Exploratory Analysis, Marimer Santiago Rivas

Open Access Master's Theses

Data from 1,042 participants in a home-based expert system intervention were analyzed to explore subgroup profiles based on the measures from the Transtheoretical Model of behavior change: (1) Pros, (2) Cons, and (3) Self-Efficacy measures of attitudes towards sun protection habits. Independent studies were performed within the first three stages of change: Study 1- Precontemplation (N = 570); Study 2- Contemplation (N = 213); and Study 3- Preparation (N = 259). Replication across a series of randomly drawn data sets from the same general population was conducted for each stage. Variables external to the initial analysis were used to evaluate …

What We Have Here Is A Failure To Communicate: Using A Model To Explain Textbook Representations Of Human Evolutionary Theory, Ben Winegard Jan 2008

What We Have Here Is A Failure To Communicate: Using A Model To Explain Textbook Representations Of Human Evolutionary Theory, Ben Winegard

McNair Scholars Journal

In this paper we develop a general model to explain the hostility toward, and ignorance of, human evolutionary theory (ET) in the social sciences. We first provide relevant theoretical background explaining the basics of ET. We then briefly describe the history of, and reasons for, social science attacks against ET. After providing this background, we turn to our study of social science textbooks, describe the logic of our model, and specify four explicit predictions derived from it. Finally, we present the results of our study and discuss the significance of our findings.

Reinventing American Immigration Policy For The 21st Century, Krissy A. Katzenstein Jan 2008

Reinventing American Immigration Policy For The 21st Century, Krissy A. Katzenstein

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

With an estimated eleven to twelve million undocumented workers currently in the United States, the need for immigration reform is critical. As lawmakers grapple with the question of how to best meet the needs of the country, they should keep in mind that the United States is a country of immigration. If the U.S. reverts to a guest worker program like that proposed by the Bush administration, it should expect the results that history suggests--worker exploitation, falling wages, deteriorating working conditions, and discrimination. However, proposals calling for immediate permanent legal status also fail to completely address the needs of the …

Enlightening Leadership: A Phenomenology, Kevin M. Mays Jan 2008

Enlightening Leadership: A Phenomenology, Kevin M. Mays

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The mechanistic, seventeenth century paradigm that has informed the leadership of our organizations has evolved into the quantum realm. This scientific renaissance is revealing a depth of knowledge that is stirring a new found interest in wisdom traditions as the truths of modern science appear to mirror knowledge found in ancient philosophic and meditative practices. Such Eastern spiritual practices have entered into the American mainstream and are becoming validated from a scientific perspective.

Continuing research on meditation has revealed its effectiveness in producing many of the characteristics deemed essential in the field of transformational leadership. Congruently meditation centers are proliferating, …

A Social Ecological Approach Of Community Efforts To Promote Physical Activity And Weight Management, Elizabeth Richards, Mary E. Riner, Laura P. Sands Jan 2008

A Social Ecological Approach Of Community Efforts To Promote Physical Activity And Weight Management, Elizabeth Richards, Mary E. Riner, Laura P. Sands

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Obesity and physical inactivity are major public health problems in the United States. Campus-Community partnerships have the potential to address the community health and quality of life issues at the local level. The purposes of this study were: 1) to identify groups who are at risk for being overweight and physically inactive; 2) to identify a relationship between broad social ecological layers and weight and exercise levels; and 3) to identify community features that are associated with weight and exercise levels. Interventions for physical activity and weight reduction should consider the social ecological framework including environmental and social influences.

Role Of Variant Sialylation In Regulating Tumor Cell Behavior, Faheem M. Shaikh Jan 2008

Role Of Variant Sialylation In Regulating Tumor Cell Behavior, Faheem M. Shaikh

All ETDs from UAB

Many different tumors have been documented to have elevated levels of the enzyme ST6Gal I, a Golgi glycosyltransferase that adds α2-6 sialic acids to glycoproteins. Concurrently, upregulated ST6Gal I is associated with metastasis and poor patient prognosis. We initially showed that HD3 colonocytes made to express oncogenic-ras, a common mutation in colon carcinoma, have increased expression of ST6Gal I and elevated α2-6 sialylated integrins. Having established that ras regulates ST6Gal I expression in colon epithelial cells, we found that colonocytes carrying hyper α2-6 sialylated β1 integrins exhibit increased adhesion to and migration toward collagen I. Further, we found that β1 …

Evidence Of Self-Correcting Spiral Flows In Swimming Boxfishes, I. K. Bartol, M. S. Gordon, P. Webb, D. Weihs, M. Gharib Jan 2008

Evidence Of Self-Correcting Spiral Flows In Swimming Boxfishes, I. K. Bartol, M. S. Gordon, P. Webb, D. Weihs, M. Gharib

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The marine boxfishes have rigid keeled exteriors (carapaces) unlike most fishes, yet exhibit high stability, high maneuverability and relatively low drag given their large cross-sectional area. These characteristics lend themselves well to bioinspired design. Based on previous stereolithographic boxfish model experiments, it was determined that vortical flows develop around the carapace keels, producing self-correcting forces that facilitate swimming in smooth trajectories. To determine if similar self-correcting flows occur in live, actively swimming boxfishes, two species of boxfishes (Ostracion meleagris and Lactophrys triqueter) were induced to swim against currents in a water tunnel, while flows around the fishes were quantified …

Physical Activity Patterns In Missoula Youth, Laura Leigh Mohar Jan 2008

Physical Activity Patterns In Missoula Youth, Laura Leigh Mohar

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Physical activity (PA) is a critical determinant of long term health and is necessary for the prevention of youth onset–adult diseases. It is recommended that all youth accumulate at least 60+ min of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) most days of the week in bouts lasting at least 10 min. PURPOSE: To evaluate the PA patterns of Missoula youth in order to make better recommendations for PA interventions for a wellness policy. METHODS: 324 elementary and middle school students from 5 schools wore accelerometers on their wrists for 5 days. The data were converted to activity …

Property Tax Revenue Decline In The State Of California And The Implications: An Examination Of Selected Local Governments In The State Of California, Ryan M. Mauldin Jan 2008

Property Tax Revenue Decline In The State Of California And The Implications: An Examination Of Selected Local Governments In The State Of California, Ryan M. Mauldin

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The Center for Responsible Lending projects California local governments to experience a $107 billion dollar decrease in home values and taxable property rolls as a result of subprime mortgage related foreclosures [Lending, 2008]. Due to Proposition 13, property taxes do not account for a substantial portion of local government revenue. They do, however, constitute 53% of statewide K-14 funding, as stipulated by Proposition 98 (Education Revenue Augmentation Fund or ERAF). As a result of ERAF, local governments (defined as counties, cities, schools, and special districts) receive less money through a complex fund shifting process that offsets statewide general fund spending. …

A Formative Evaluation Of Kentucky’S Environmental Compliance Assistance Program, Bonnie Wathen Jan 2008

A Formative Evaluation Of Kentucky’S Environmental Compliance Assistance Program, Bonnie Wathen

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Kentucky’s Department for Environmental Protection’s Division of Compliance Assistance has the Environmental Compliance Assistance Program (CAP). CAP is a relatively new program that has had little to no evaluation and measurement. However, with limited state resources to be distributed to departments, it is imperative that programs be able to justify their existence. Due to this fact, I chose to evaluate the CAP for my capstone project.

Because inadequate data on outcomes is available at this time, I was unable to conduct a traditional summative evaluation or include any statistical analysis. Instead I chose to conduct a formative, or process, evaluation …
