Why Parents Choose Catholic School: A Social Theory Understanding, John M. Schultz Jan 2008

Why Parents Choose Catholic School: A Social Theory Understanding, John M. Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Catholic schools in the United States are at a critical juncture. The Catholic bishops speak as if parents choose a Catholic school mainly because of the spiritual mission of the school. But what are the real reasons that parents choose Catholic school for their children? Current research provides no social or religious understanding of the phenomenon of school choice.

Research Questions and hypotheses

As the title indicates, the purpose of this study is to investigate the real reasons that parents choose Catholic school for their children as understood by using a social theory model and as influenced by many forces …

Reliability Of Urinary Bladder Pressure Measurement In Critical Care, Melanie Horbal Shuster Jan 2008

Reliability Of Urinary Bladder Pressure Measurement In Critical Care, Melanie Horbal Shuster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background of the study: Intra abdominal pressure (IAP) theoretically may be a predictor of enteral nutrition tolerance (EN). Urinary bladder pressure (UBP) is the gold standard for estimating IAP. Current recommendations for UBP measurement (UBPM) calls for the instillation of normal sterile saline (NSS) into the bladder while the patient is supine with a zero degree (0°) head of bed elevation (HOBE). How different instill volumes (IVs) and body positions influence UBPM were unknown, and the intra- and inter-observer reliability had not been adequately investigated.

Specific aims: 1) Systematically evaluate the relative contribution of bladder IV and subject's position upon …

An Occupational Therapy Guide For Improving Social Performance In Adolescents Within The Juvenile Justice System, Missy Law, Ashle Hicks Jan 2008

An Occupational Therapy Guide For Improving Social Performance In Adolescents Within The Juvenile Justice System, Missy Law, Ashle Hicks

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Occupational therapists believe social participation is an important aspect of adolescent development. Social participation problems can be linked to mental health diagnoses and delinquency. Adolescents who are court ordered into the juvenile justice system often do not receive the necessary treatment due to lack of resources within the community.

A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather information regarding social participation aspects in relation to adolescent delinquency and placement within the juvenile justice system. The findings suggest there is more emphasis placed on punishment for adolescents rather than rehabilitation. Interventions used to support rehabilitation are primarily limited to counseling. A …

There are approximately 4 million Americans living with some type of disability as a result of having suffered a stroke. Due to the high incidence of stroke related disability and associated economic costs; stroke rehabilitation is a health care priority. Even with early intervention only 10% of stroke survivors will recover completely, 25% recover with minor impairments, 40% experience moderate to severe impairments, 10% require care in a nursing home, and 15% die shortly after the stroke. Since the highest categories range from minimal to …

Non-Education In America: Gateway To Subsistence Living, Cheryl Page

Journal Publications

Dropout rates are the proverbial canary-in-the-coal-mine. If ever there was a predictor of poverty, discrimination, abuse, neglect, inability to parent-in short the suffering of an entire generation-it is the lack of experience and education we are affording our minority students. This lack of education is invariably accompanied by lack of not only opportunity, but sustainability. We have a potential generation of students unable to make their way through life independent of government support. The worst crime in a capitalist society is to leave an entire group without the skill set to compete. Perhaps the biggest hurdle to objectively identifying schools …

Money, Fear And Prejudice: Why The Courts Killed Terri Schiavo, Priscilla Norwood Harris Jan 2008

Money, Fear And Prejudice: Why The Courts Killed Terri Schiavo, Priscilla Norwood Harris

Journal Publications

On March 31, 2005, thirteen days after the court-ordered removal of her feeding tube, Theresa Marie Schindler Schiavo (Terri) died from dehydration. At the time of her death, Terri did not suffer from a terminal condition; if provided with nourishment, her life expectancy was at least ten years. Since February 1990, Terri had been unconscious. Terri left no living will or written directive as to her wishes. Family members vehemently disagreed as to whether Terri, raised in the Catholic faith, would have wanted her feeding tube removed. To legally end Terri's life, Florida law required the person petitioning for her …

Automobile Emissions And Climate Change Impacts: Employing Public Nuisance Doctrine As Part Of A "Global Warming Solution" In California, Randall S. Abate

Journal Publications

The battle against climate change and its impacts in the United States must be waged on many fronts and requires many weapons. Until the federal government provides a comprehensive and mandatory legislative response to the climate change problem, gap-filling efforts such as regional, state, and local legislative initiatives and climate change litigation will be essential to achieve some progress in the ongoing challenge to combat the causes and effects of climate change. This Article focuses on one of those gap-filling efforts: public nuisance suits against power companies and automobile manufacturers for the climate change impacts caused by emissions from those …

Beyond Gender: Taking A Multi-Status Approach To Understanding Students' Positioning In Stem, Ashima Singh Jan 2008

Beyond Gender: Taking A Multi-Status Approach To Understanding Students' Positioning In Stem, Ashima Singh

Open Access Dissertations

Although data indicate that White women and persons of color are both vulnerable to selective attrition in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) pipeline, gender has been the primary focus of most research in that area. This implies that: (1) intersections of multiple marginalization (e.g. women of color) within STEM is understudied, and (2) there is a need for a multifaceted understanding (encompassing perceptual, experiential, motivational and social characteristics) of students' perceptions of, and participation in, the STEM disciplines. In this research project, a multi-status, cross-disciplinary survey methodology was used to identify the ways in which undergraduate students perceived, …

Constructing 'Health', Defining 'Choice': Legal And Policy Perspetives On The Post-Pgd Embryo In Four Jurisdictions, Estair Van Wagner, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Jeff Nisker Jan 2008

Constructing 'Health', Defining 'Choice': Legal And Policy Perspetives On The Post-Pgd Embryo In Four Jurisdictions, Estair Van Wagner, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Jeff Nisker

Articles & Book Chapters

Through Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, embryos created by IVF are selected for transfer to a woman based on particular characterisations, including the presence of genetic markers or a tissue match for a sibling. In this paper we examine the precise language used in the recent policy and regulatory documents of four jurisdictions (the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand) that in any way characterises the post-PGD embryo. We then explore the mutually constructed relationship between how that embryo is characterised and the purposes for which PGD is applied, as well as the types of uses to which the post-PGD embryo …

Are Eu Trade Sanctions On Burma Compatible With Wto Law?, Robert L. Howse, Jared M. Genser Jan 2008

Are Eu Trade Sanctions On Burma Compatible With Wto Law?, Robert L. Howse, Jared M. Genser

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article will explore the European Union's approach to Burma. The European Union, until recently, has implemented quite limited trade sanctions against the Burmese junta. According to the most recent figures, E.U. countries still import €306 million ($454 million) of commodities and products, ninety-five percent of which are textiles, timber, gems, and precious metals. However, the Common Position of November 19, 2007, strengthens considerably E.U. measures against the Burmese regime and contains a ban on the importation of these goods from Burma. Further, the Common Position requires E.U. countries to prohibit intentional and knowing "participation" in activities that "directly or …

Accommodating Respectful Religious Expression In The Workplace, Nantiya Ruan Jan 2008

Accommodating Respectful Religious Expression In The Workplace, Nantiya Ruan

Scholarly Works

This Article makes the case for judicial recognition of respectful religious expression in the workplace as more consistent with the Court's Establishment Clause jurisprudence and also more true to the legislative intent of the religious accommodation provisions of Title VII. Respectful religious pluralism in the workplace should become the norm through judicial requirements of best practices in the workplace. Such a view should be wholly supported by the majority of the Justices because it is consistent with their expressed views, in the Establishment Clause case law, that religion fosters moral good and that in a pluralistic society religious expression cannot …

Identifying Cluster Subtypes For Acquisition Of Sun Protection Habits Within Stages Of Change An Exploratory Analysis, Marimer Santiago Rivas

Open Access Master's Theses

Data from 1,042 participants in a home-based expert system intervention were analyzed to explore subgroup profiles based on the measures from the Transtheoretical Model of behavior change: (1) Pros, (2) Cons, and (3) Self-Efficacy measures of attitudes towards sun protection habits. Independent studies were performed within the first three stages of change: Study 1- Precontemplation (N = 570); Study 2- Contemplation (N = 213); and Study 3- Preparation (N = 259). Replication across a series of randomly drawn data sets from the same general population was conducted for each stage. Variables external to the initial analysis were used to evaluate …
