The Influence Of Timed Reading Practices On Reading Gains And Comprehension Levels Of Third Grade Readers, Kristi D. Stuck

Theses and Dissertations

Since the signing of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) has been used by many schools to document students' reading gains. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of timed reading practices on the reading levels and comprehension scores of third grade students as they participated in literature discussion groups. Data collection included: reading levels from Developmental Reading Assessment, students' reading reflection logs, and transcriptions of language patterns during literature discussion groups. The findings revealed no statistical significance for students who participated in timed reading drills in …

Differences In Methamphetamine Users And Crack Cocaine Users, Kilby Erwin Raptopoulos Jan 2008

Differences In Methamphetamine Users And Crack Cocaine Users, Kilby Erwin Raptopoulos

Theses and Dissertations

This research addresses basic differences between crack cocaine users and methamphetamine users. The sample consisted of stimulant users who tested positive for either crack cocaine and/or methamphetamine from three rural counties in eastern Arkansas. This study seeks to further existing knowledge concerning drug use by examining demographics, drug use patterns, criminal histories and parental substance abuse. The study used Respondent-Driven Sampling to accumulate a sample size of 211 participants. Data was obtained through self-reported demographic information, drug use, criminal histories, and parental substance abuse problems during individual interviews, which were also matched with the results from a urinary analysis to …

Ancient Dna Identification Of Early 20th Century Simian T-Cell Leukemia Virus Type 1, Sebastien Calvignac, Jean-Michel Terme, Shannon M. Hensley, Pierre Jalinot, Alex D. Greenwood, Catherine Hanni

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The molecular identification of proviruses from ancient tissues (and particularly from bones) remains a contentious issue. It can be expected that the copy number of proviruses will be low, which magnifies the risk of contamination with retroviruses from exogenous sources. To assess the feasibility of paleoretrovirological studies, we attempted to identify proviruses from early 20th century bones of museum specimens while following a strict ancient DNA methodology. Simian T-cell leukemia virus type 1 sequences were successfully obtained and authenticated from a Chlorocebus pygerythrus specimen. This represents the first clear evidence that it will be possible to use museum specimens to …

Mycobacteriosis-Associated Mortality In Wild Striped Bass (Morone Saxatilis) From Chesapeake Bay, Usa, D. T. Gauthier, R. J. Latour, D. M. Heisey, C. F. Bonzek, J. Gartland, E. J. Burge, W. K. Vogelbein

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The striped bass (Morone saxatilis) is an economically and ecologically important finfish species along the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. Recent stock assessments in Chesapeake Bay (USA) indicate that non-fishing mortality in striped bass has increased since 1999, concomitant with very high (>50%) prevalence of visceral and dermal disease caused by Mycobacterium spp. Current fishery assessment models do not differentiate between disease and other components of non-fishing mortality (e. g., senescence, predation); therefore, disease impact on the striped bass population has not been established. Specific measurement of mortality associated with mycobacteriosis in wild striped bass is …

Plant Health In Private Urban Gardens, Stephan Helfer Jan 2008

Plant Health In Private Urban Gardens, Stephan Helfer

Turkish Journal of Botany

Private garden plots present a vast area for growing plants for food or enjoyment. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh provides a plant identification and advisory service to the public. This includes a service to advise on plant health problems, which is not advertised. In the past 17 years a moderate number of individuals made use of this service, with an average of 67 enquiries and some 100 specimens per year. Relevant data from the enquiries were entered into a database and analysed. The majority of enquiries concerned tree problems, followed by ornamental and fruit plant problems. Fungi ranked highest, with …

Novel Approach For Synthesis Of 2:1 Permethylated Β-Cyclodextrin–C60 Conjugate, Zhu Guan, Yali Wang, Yong Chen, Yongmin Zhang Jan 2008

Novel Approach For Synthesis Of 2:1 Permethylated Β-Cyclodextrin–C60 Conjugate, Zhu Guan, Yali Wang, Yong Chen, Yongmin Zhang

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Amphiphilic cyclodextrin–fullerene conjugates have potential biological activity, due to their water solubility. In order to study the influence of the linker of these conjugates on solubility and aggregation, a permethylated β-cyclodextrin–C60 conjugate with a short linker –(CH2)2NHCO–, which is attached to the secondary face of β-cyclodextrin was synthesized. Its solubility in water and its UV spectrum in CH2Cl2 and water were investigated.

A Comparative Analysis Of Differences In Resident Satisfaction, Retention, And Cumulative Grade Point Average Between University, Jeffrey Novak Jan 2008

A Comparative Analysis Of Differences In Resident Satisfaction, Retention, And Cumulative Grade Point Average Between University, Jeffrey Novak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study compared students' perceptions and satisfaction as they related to their place of residence. In addition, this study sought to determine if a difference existed between student retention rates from their first year in college to their second year and one's grade point average with respect to one's place of residence within the collegiate setting. As such, the problem this study examined was the overall impact of where a first-time-in-college student lived within the University of Central Florida housing system and how that living environment impacted students' levels of satisfaction, overall retention rates, and cumulative grade point averages. The …

A Historical Analysis Of Teacher Preparation Program Contentbeginning With Teacher Normal Colleges In 1839 Throughschool Distric, Julie Helton Jan 2008

A Historical Analysis Of Teacher Preparation Program Contentbeginning With Teacher Normal Colleges In 1839 Throughschool Distric, Julie Helton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore teacher preparation program content throughout American history in order to determine trends in programs of study, specifically including coursework in education foundations, teaching methods involving the behavioral sciences, and subject area content. These categories were selected because their content is responsible for teachers' working knowledge of their subject area, as well as student learning, behavior management and motivation. The study also examined documented teacher knowledge voids: student behavior management, time management, organization, dealing with parents, motivating students, and meeting individual students' needs to determine which aspects of teacher education could improve teachers' …

It will consider what the individual says he believes and how or if he chooses to act on those beliefs. The statistics used for the analysis of the World Values Survey Waves 2 and 4 in this paper are cross tabulations, factor analysis, including assigning factor scores to each observation, Pearson’s correlation, linear regression, and an independent samples …

Around The World And Back: A Discovery In India, Charlie L. Gaare Jan 2008

Around The World And Back: A Discovery In India, Charlie L. Gaare

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The impetus for my journey was the desire to learn more about another culture, and pursue the idea of the old cliché: be the change I wanted to see in the world. This journey fulfilled the requirements of the project in multiple ways. It was a major risk to travel to another country with a language barrier on my own. The amount of work it took to prepare for the trip and face the challenges of the experience itself was very labor intensive. I had to do this because I needed to see that I could make a difference. I …
