Employment Hardship Among Older Workers: Does Residential And Gender Inequality Extend Into Older Age?, Tim Slack, Leif Jensen

Faculty Publications

Objectives. The realities of a rapidly aging society make the employment circumstances of older workers an increasingly important social issue. We examine the prevalence and correlates of underemployment among older Americans, with a special focus on residence and gender, to provide an assessment of the labor market challenges facing older workers. Methods. We analyzed data from the March Current Population Surveys for the years 2003, 2004, and 2005. We used descriptive statistics to explore the prevalence of underemployment among older workers and developed multivariate models to assess the impact of age, residence, and gender on the likelihood of underemployment, net …

Illusory Consent: When An Incapacitated Patient Agrees To Treatment, Fredrick E. Vars Jan 2008

Illusory Consent: When An Incapacitated Patient Agrees To Treatment, Fredrick E. Vars

Articles

Medical treatment requires informed consent which in turn requires decision making capacity When a patient with questionable capacity does not resist treatment these requirements are often neglected treatment is administered with no assessment of capacity and no consideration of alternative decision making A variety of ethical and legal forces contribute to this neglect The practical effect is that patients are treated when if they had capacity they would refuse treatment This subverts the dominant interest in health care decision making patient autonomy After surveying current law and practice this article addresses the following issues 1 when to test patients for …

The Experience Of Older Men Living Alone: A Phenomenological Perspective, Leslie Susan Yetter Jan 2008

The Experience Of Older Men Living Alone: A Phenomenological Perspective, Leslie Susan Yetter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to uncover older men's experience of living alone. This study was pursued because much of the literature reports that older men who live alone face the highest risk of death, mental illness, physical disability, and social isolation in our country. Based upon this literature, nurses appeared to be ignoring the needs of this vulnerable population. Using Giorgi's phenomenological method, 14 men 60 years and older who lived alone were interviewed and asked about their experience living alone. In the data analysis, the themes of self-growth, self-determination, structure, balance and sense of purpose emerged. Essentially, …

I Know What I Like: Stability Of Aesthetic Preference In Alzheimer's Disease, Andrea R. Halpern, Jenny Ly, Seth Elkin-Franklin, Margaret G. O'Connor Jan 2008

I Know What I Like: Stability Of Aesthetic Preference In Alzheimer's Disease, Andrea R. Halpern, Jenny Ly, Seth Elkin-Franklin, Margaret G. O'Connor

Faculty Journal Articles

Two studies explored the stability of art preference in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and age-matched control participants. Preferences for three different styles of paintings, displayed on art postcards, were examined over two sessions. Preference for specific paintings differed among individuals but AD and non-AD groups maintained about the same stability in terms of preference judgments across two weeks, even though the AD patients did not have explicit memory for the paintings. We conclude that aesthetic responses can be preserved in the face of cognitive decline. This should encourage caregivers and family to engage in arts appreciation activities with patients, and …

Melody Recognition At Fast And Slow Tempos: Effects Of Age, Experience, And Familiarity, W. Jay Dowling, James C. Bartlett, Andrea R. Halpern, Melinda W. Andrews Jan 2008

Melody Recognition At Fast And Slow Tempos: Effects Of Age, Experience, And Familiarity, W. Jay Dowling, James C. Bartlett, Andrea R. Halpern, Melinda W. Andrews

Faculty Journal Articles

Eighty-one listeners defined by three age ranges (18–30, 31–59, and over 60 years) and three levels of musical experience performed an immediate recognition task requiring the detection of alterations in melodies. On each trial, a brief melody was presented, followed 5 sec later by a test stimulus that either was identical to the target or had two pitches changed, for a same–different judgment. Each melody pair was presented at 0.6 note/sec, 3.0 notes/sec, or 6.0 notes/sec. Performance was better with familiar melodies than with unfamiliar melodies. Overall performance declined slightly with age and improved substantially with increasing experience, in agreement …

Facility Service Environments, Staffing, And Psychosocial Care In Nursing Homes, Ning Jackie Zhang, Denise Gammonley, Seung Chun Paek, Kathryn Frahm Jan 2008

Facility Service Environments, Staffing, And Psychosocial Care In Nursing Homes, Ning Jackie Zhang, Denise Gammonley, Seung Chun Paek, Kathryn Frahm

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Using 2003 Online Survey Certification and Reporting (OSCAR) data for Medicare and Medicaid certified facilities (N=14, 184) and multinomial logistic regression this study investigated if (1) psychosocial care quality was better in facilities where State requirements for qualified social services staffing exceeded Federal minimum regulations and (2) facility service environments are associated with psychosocial care quality. For-profit status and higher percentage of Medicaid residents are associated with lower quality. Staffing, market demand, and market competition are associated with better quality. Psychosocial care quality is more associated with payer status and market forces and less with regulatory requirements.

Psycho-Social Effects Of A Brain-Training Program Among Healthy Older Adults, Desma Hurley, M. Jean Turner, William C. Bailey

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Grounded in cognitive neuroscience and social exchange theory, this research evaluated the relationship between changes in cognitive functioning and two psycho-social dimensions of life among healthy adults over the age of 70 (N=12). Specific psycho-social dimensions examined were social interaction and depression. Six females and six males participated in the study. All were white, college-educated individuals residing in a life-care residential retirement community. The participants used the Posit Science® Brain Fitness Program™, an auditory-based computer training program that improves memory and speed of processing, for forty hours over an eight-week period. Pre- and post-tests related to social interaction and depressive …

Do We Want To Measure The Quality Of Care For Vulnerable Older People? The Acove Approach., Neil S. Wenger Jan 2008

Do We Want To Measure The Quality Of Care For Vulnerable Older People? The Acove Approach., Neil S. Wenger

Center for Policy Research

There's limited information available about measuring the quality of medical care that is targeted to the needs of older patients. And there's very limited pressure on the system to provide high quality geriatric care. Why is that? Because the quality measures haven't been adequately developed and implemented, and it's more difficult to measure care for an older sample. Measuring care for ill older adults is complex, because they tend to have multiple medical conditions, and they demonstrate substantial variation in goals for care (Wenger and colleagues 2007). The Assessing Care of Vulnerable Elders (ACOVE) project began in 1998 as a …

Breast Health Behavior Among Lesbians: The Role Of Health Beliefs, Heterosexism, And Homophobia, Dana Dehart Jan 2008

Breast Health Behavior Among Lesbians: The Role Of Health Beliefs, Heterosexism, And Homophobia, Dana Dehart

Faculty and Staff Publications

The Health Belief Model was used as a conceptual framework for exploring how health beliefs and perceptions of heterosexism and homophobia in health care relate to lesbians' breast health behaviors, including use of breast exams and mammograms, visits to health care providers, and use of complementary/alternative care. A total of 173 exclusively homosexual women completed survey measures assessing health beliefs, experiences of heterosexism/homophobia, and health maintenance behaviors as these related to breast health. Findings indicated that women perceived heterosexism and homophobia from providers to influence the amount of discussion they had with providers and, to a lesser extent, care received, …

Tikkun Olam A Faith-Based Approach For Assisting Older Adults In Health System Navigation, Janice M. Kuperstein Jan 2008

Tikkun Olam A Faith-Based Approach For Assisting Older Adults In Health System Navigation, Janice M. Kuperstein

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The complexity and lack of coordination of the U.S. health care system is especially challenging for older adults, many of whom have multiple chronic conditions. The faith community is a potential partner to assist them, due to strong religiosity of older adults and specific characteristics of faith communities. This study explores the knowledge and practices of faith community nurses (FCNs) in meeting care coordination needs of older adults and identifies a model of gap-filling by FCN practice. An approach combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches was used. A survey was distributed to all known FCNs in Kentucky. From the 60 …
