Bilateral Claudication Results In Alterations In The Gait Biomechanics At The Hip And Ankle Joints, Shing-Jye Chen, Iraklis Pipinos, Jason Johanning, Matija Radovic, Jessie M. Huisinga, Sara A. Myers, Nikolaos Stergiou

United States Public Health Resources

Claudication is the most common symptomatic manifestation of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), producing significant ambulatory compromise. The purpose of this study was to use advanced biomechanical gait analysis to determine the gait alterations occurring in claudicating patients both before and after onset of claudication pain in their legs. Hip, knee, and ankle joint moments were measured in claudicating patients (age: 64.46±8.47 years; body mass: 80.70±12.64 kg; body height: 1.72±0.08 m) and were compared to gender–age–body mass–height-matched healthy controls (age 66.27±9.22 years; body mass: 77.89±10.65 kg; body height: 1.74±0.08 m). The claudicating patients were evaluated both before (pain-free (PF) condition) and …

The Positive Energy Patrol: One Nursing Division's Approach To Address The Issue Of Morale In The Workplace, Mary Ann Ryan Jan 2008

The Positive Energy Patrol: One Nursing Division's Approach To Address The Issue Of Morale In The Workplace, Mary Ann Ryan

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project is to develop an article for submission to a professional journal describing a staff led initiative to address employee morale in the hospital setting. It is well documented in professional nursing literature that the morale of a work environment has a direct effect upon the care provided to the patients and families served. Empowerment of staff, mutual respect, and transpersonal care as described by nursing theorist Jean Watson provide a healthy framework for a workplace where people want to engage and contribute. A morale initiative as trialed at one institution will be shared for consideration …

The participants in the workshops included 11 students on IEPs and 15 students not on IEPs. Parents also provided feedback regarding their attitudes toward the program. The results indicated that there were increases in student participant knowledge and career interest for both the students not on IEPs and …

Social Justice And Health Care Management: An Elusive Quest?, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2008

Social Justice And Health Care Management: An Elusive Quest?, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Contemporary debate on health care resource management is tied to a central moral issue: namely, how to achieve an optimum level of reasonable or appropriate treatment based on the medical condition of each patient. Failing to tackle and resolve this issue in a confident and forthright manner assures the present approach to health care decision making to continue in a state of indecisiveness if, indeed, not lethargy.

Undergirding this moral issue is the foundational economic dilemma of controlling costs while limiting access to health care resources. Finding a just solution to an equitable distribution of finite health care resources is …

How Subjective And Objective Memory, Family History, And Knowledge Of Alzheimer's Disease Influence Older Adults' Fear Of Developing Alzheimer's Disease, Samantha Lyn French Jan 2008

How Subjective And Objective Memory, Family History, And Knowledge Of Alzheimer's Disease Influence Older Adults' Fear Of Developing Alzheimer's Disease, Samantha Lyn French

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It is projected that by the year 2050, the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease (AD) will rise to approximately 13.2 million. And, because AD is on the rise, apprehension about developing the degenerative disease (anticipatory dementia or fear of developing AD) has become a topic of study in the past few years. However, most studies focusing on anticipatory dementia have used a sample of individuals younger than age 65 and have used a single item questionnaire to explore their apprehension. The current study utilized 50 adults ages 65 and older to examine anticipatory dementia and its relationship with subjective …

The Effect Of Beta-Alanine Supplementation On Neuromuscular Fatigue In Elderly (55–92 Years): A Double-Blind Randomized Study, Jeffrey R. Stout, B. Sue Graves, Abbie E. Smith, Michael J. Hartman, Joel T. Cramer, Travis W. Beck, Roger C. Harris

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: Ageing is associated with a significant reduction in skeletal muscle carnosine which has been linked with a reduction in the buffering capacity of muscle and in theory, may increase the rate of fatigue during exercise. Supplementing beta-alanine has been shown to significantly increase skeletal muscle carnosine. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine the effects of ninety days of beta-alanine supplementation on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold (PWCFT) in elderly men and women.

Methods: Using a double-blind placebo controlled design, twenty-six men (n = 9) and women (n = 17) (age ± …

The following study was implemented to explore the potential for a four-week curriculum module in gerontological social work education to positively impact students’ practice-related knowledge concerning older adults, as well as their attitudes toward elderly persons and interest in working with them. Pertinent literature was reviewed to conceptualize the building of a gerontology curriculum module that could be integrated into a pre-existing social work course. The module’s design and content were reflective of its primary goal, which was to educate students about salient aspects of social work knowledge, skill, and practice with older adults utilizing experiential methods. Data analysis revealed …

Ultra Wideband Radio: A Novel Method For Measuring Wandering In Persons With Dementia, William D. Kearns, Donna Algase, D. Helen Moore, Sadia Ahmed Jan 2008

Ultra Wideband Radio: A Novel Method For Measuring Wandering In Persons With Dementia, William D. Kearns, Donna Algase, D. Helen Moore, Sadia Ahmed

Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications

Wandering by persons with dementia is a complex syndrome of locomotive behaviors shaped by environmental, wanderer-specific and caregiver characteristics that vary the risk level for exiting, elopement, getting lost and accidental death. While valid and reliable methods to measure wandering exist, few have been evaluated for measurement of specific geographical patterns of wandering behavior as they occur in space and over time. In this paper we demonstrate how UWB-RFID can be used to unobtrusively and continuously measure two particularly high-risk wandering behaviors over intervals from weeks to months that occur in proximity to care setting exit points: lingering near exit …

Seniors And Information Technology: Are We Shrinking The Digital Divide?, Mark E. Mcmurtrey, Ronald E. Mcgaughey, James R. Downey Jan 2008

Seniors And Information Technology: Are We Shrinking The Digital Divide?, Mark E. Mcmurtrey, Ronald E. Mcgaughey, James R. Downey

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The “digital divide” has been present in the field of information technology (IT) since the inception of the digital computer. Throughout the course of history, one group (or more) has had better access to computer and information technology than another faction. For example: rich versus poor, young versus old, advanced societies versus less developed countries, etc. This disparity has existed for a variety of reasons, among them political, cultural, economic and even class or socioeconomic in nature. This paper examines one particular component of this phenomenon, the “gray divide” pertaining to the use of IT by our elderly, or senior …

The Article reviews drug treatment court basics, describes their function, and evaluates legal aspects of drug treatment court practice. The authors' analysis includes the latest in genetic research, penal statistics, and recent court cases that bear on the subject. Beginning with the premise that traditional criminal case processing does not address the underlying causes of much criminal behavior, the authors …

Designating Health Care Decisionmakers For Patients Without Advance Directives: A Psychological Critique, Nina A. Kohn, Jeremy A. Blumenthal Jan 2008

Designating Health Care Decisionmakers For Patients Without Advance Directives: A Psychological Critique, Nina A. Kohn, Jeremy A. Blumenthal

Georgia Law Review

States' default surrogate statutes allow family or friends to make health care decisions for incapacitated patients who lack advance directives. Although such statutes are commonly justified on the grounds that they honor the wishes of incapacitated persons, the review of empirical research on surrogate decision making in this Article challenges this justification. The authors find that default surrogate statutes do a reasonable job of capturing majority preferences for health care decision making processes, but do not ensure that patients receive the treatment they would have selected for themselves if able. Rather, surrogates appointed under default surrogate statutes can be expected to …

Perceived Discrimination And Depressive Symptomatology Among Native American Older Adults, Rita Haidle Billow Jan 2008

Perceived Discrimination And Depressive Symptomatology Among Native American Older Adults, Rita Haidle Billow

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Recent studies have recognized discrimination as a stressor that is linked to psychological distress for those who experience such discrimination. The present study investigated the role of cultural identification as a moderator of the relationship between a global measure of perceived discrimination and depressive affect for a sample of older Native American adults, a group that has essentially been ignored in the empirical literature. The data were collected through surveys mailed to tribally-enrolled Native American adults aged 50 and older residing on a reservation in the Northwest. Multiple regression analysis was performed to test the moderating role of cultural identification. …
