A Global Perspective On Andragogy: An Update, John Henschke Jan 2008

A Global Perspective On Andragogy: An Update, John Henschke

Adult Education Faculty Works

Andragogy has received mixed reviews in the past. Some have analyzed in from a positive perspective. Some have analyzed it from a negative perspective, and some have ignored it altogether. Most of the discussions have limited their observations to how Malcolm S. Knowles addressed andragogy. There has been an inadequate investigation of the foundation and background of andragogy from a world perspective. This research presents 240 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy that may help provide a clear and understandable international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory, and practice of andragogy. Six …

Intellectual Property And Traditional Cultural Expressions: A Synopsis Of Current Issues, Molly Torsen

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

In the context of copyright law, this article will lay out the differences between Berne Convention tenets and the ideals of a prospective TCE-based legal instrument. It will then go on to outline and comment on current sui generis laws and other approaches that incorporate various aspects of existing Western laws. The TCE topic is highly sensitive and does not cover a homogeneous set of interests. As such, a one-size-fits-all instrument may be very difficult, if not impossible, to distill. The international discussion, at the very least, brings these issues under scrutiny and encourages debate as to a wide range …

Political Geography: Special Issue On Climate Change And Conflict (Review), Elizabeth L. Chalecki Jan 2008

Political Geography: Special Issue On Climate Change And Conflict (Review), Elizabeth L. Chalecki

Political Science Faculty Publications

Given that the Nobel Committee awarded its 2007 Peace Prize to former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and that greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase around the globe, practitioners of peace and security will have to familiarize themselves with climatic drivers of conflict. To that end, the journal Political Geography has devoted an entire issue to exploring the links between climate change and violent conflict.

Exposure And Exposure Modeling, Karen F. Gaines, T. E. Chow, S. A. Dyer

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Exposure to contaminants in the environment is quantified through the ecological risk assessment (ERA) process which provides a framework for the development and implementation of environmental management decisions. The ERA uses available toxicological and ecological information to estimate the probability of occurrence for a specified undesired ecological event or endpoint. The level for these endpoints depends on the objectives and the constraints imposed upon the risk assessment process; therefore, multiple endpoints at different scales may be necessary. ERAs Ecotoxicology | Exposure and Exposure Assessment 1527Author's personal copy often rely on the link between these undesired endpoints to a threshold of …

Expansion Of Golf Courses In The United States, Darrell E. Napton, Chris Laingen Jan 2008

Expansion Of Golf Courses In The United States, Darrell E. Napton, Chris Laingen

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Twenty-five million Americans play golf on the nation's 16,000 courses each year. These golf courses constitute a significant national landscape feature. Since 18789, when the game arrived in the United States, golf has filtered down the urban, economic, and social hierarchies to become accepted by and accessible to most Americans. During the ensuing thirteen decades the number, location, and layout of the nation's golf courses have responded to many of the same driving forces that impacted the nation, including decentralization, growth of the middle class, war, economic depression, suburbanization, and the increasing role of the federal government. Four epochs of …

Island Culture: The Role Of The Blasket Autobiographies In The Preservation Of A Traditional Way Of Life, Eamon Maher Jan 2008

Island Culture: The Role Of The Blasket Autobiographies In The Preservation Of A Traditional Way Of Life, Eamon Maher

Articles

The Blasket Islands, located off the west coast of Kerry, are remarkable for having inspired a flourishing literature, mainly autobiographical in nature, which is generally acknowledged as being of great anthropological value, as well as of significant literary merit. When one considers that the islands never had a population of more than around 160 persons (with an average of closer to half that number) during the years covered by the autobiographies, the existence of such an important chronicle of the simple and at times perilous life on these Atlantic outposts is all the more noteworthy. The language spoken on the …

Scale-Dependent Habitat Use By Fall Migratory Birds: Vegetation Architecture, Floristics, And Geographic Consistency, Jill L. Deppe, John T. Rotenberry Jan 2008

Scale-Dependent Habitat Use By Fall Migratory Birds: Vegetation Architecture, Floristics, And Geographic Consistency, Jill L. Deppe, John T. Rotenberry

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Animal habitat selection is a central focus of ecology and conservation biology. Understanding habitat associations in migratory animals is particularly complicated because individuals have variable habitat requirements during the annual cycle, across their geographic range, along migratory routes, and at multiple spatial scales. We studied habitat associations of 16 fall Nearctic–Neotropical migratory land birds at two spatial scales at a stopover site along the northern Yucatan coast to examine scale-dependent habitat use, identify proximate cues shaping birds' distributions, and evaluate similarities in habitat use between our tropical stopover site and temperate sites. We addressed scale-dependent habitat associations in two ways, …

In the last few years, the topic of how DNA research fits in with the text of the Book of Mormon has become increasingly divisive. Now, for the first time in one volume, respected DNA scientists, geneticists, and Book of Mormon scholars provide their views on DNA and the Book of Mormon.

Environmental Policy Aid Under Uncertainty, J. Mysiak, J. D. Brown, J. M. L. Jansen, N. W. T. Quinn Jan 2008

Environmental Policy Aid Under Uncertainty, J. Mysiak, J. D. Brown, J. M. L. Jansen, N. W. T. Quinn

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Recent emphasis on uncertainty in environmental decision making reflects numerous changes in environmental science and policy making over the past few decades. Firstly, environmental policy problems increasingly involve large, interconnected and complex social choices. For example, climate change, ozone depletion, biodiversity loss, genetically-engineered crops, environment-related diseases and health risks involve large scale, long-term impacts, whose precise causes and consequences are often poorly understood. Given these uncertainties and the risk of irreversible environmental changes, different perspectives about the nature, policy implications, or even the existence of a problem, are inevitable (Rittel and Webber, 1973; Sarewitz, 2004).

What Is A Humane Wildlife Control Service?, John Griffin, Lori Thiele, Pamela Lough, Janet Snyder, Maggie Brasted, John Hadidian

Wildlife Population Management Collection

In May 2007, The Humane Society of the United States launched a for-fee business called Humane Wildlife Servicessm to engage in wildlife control jobs in the Washington, D.C. metro area. We had several purposes in launching this service. First, we felt it necessary to offer a service to customers in our home base area that allowed them to choose a wildlife removal company that did not trap and relocate, or trap and kill, animals. Second, we wished to directly experience and test the operational and conceptual challenges associated with this sort of service. Third, we wished to develop a model …

Development Theory And Domestic Agriculture In The Caribbean: Recurring Crises And Missed Opportunities, Benjamin F. Timms Jan 2008

Development Theory And Domestic Agriculture In The Caribbean: Recurring Crises And Missed Opportunities, Benjamin F. Timms

Social Sciences

Caribbean development theory has long advanced a break from economic reliance on single crop exports through the promotion of domestic agriculture. Yet today the domestic agriculture sector in much of the Caribbean is underdeveloped, as the rising food import bill attests. This paper examines the historical views on domestic agriculture by development theorists with a focus on how recurring economic crises have created opportunities to advance domestic agricultural production. While internal and external forces have thwarted many of these efforts, the current global food crises may provide a sustained incentive to overcome the structural legacy of the plantation economy through …

The Case For A Multi-Methodological, Cross-Disciplinary Approach To The Analysis Of Ict Investment And Projects In The Developing World, Laura Hosman, Elizabeth Fife, Laura Elizabeth Armey Jan 2008

The Case For A Multi-Methodological, Cross-Disciplinary Approach To The Analysis Of Ict Investment And Projects In The Developing World, Laura Hosman, Elizabeth Fife, Laura Elizabeth Armey

Political Science

This article makes the case for greater collaboration and communication between scholars and practitioners of information communications technology (ICT) for development projects and for the use of multi-methodological, cross-disciplinary approaches to understand what will make for more successful endeavors in this important arena, the necessity of which is reflected in the widespread use of public-private partnerships. To this end, we utilize both macro- and micro-level analyses to examine ICT investment in the developing world. The first research question—can ICT investment be shown to contribute to economic growth?—is addressed through econometric analysis. Though our model finds evidence to the affirmative, macro-level …

Identifying And Addressing Contemporary Issues In Central Coast Oak Woodlands, Erin Rice, Douglas D. Piirto, Royce Larsen, Bill Tietje, Ryan Cooper, Ulric Lund

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Recently, questions about the extent of thinning, the sustainability of forest management practices, and the compatibility with other uses were raised by the media, agency personnel, and environmental groups. In response, University of California Cooperative Extension and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Natural Resources Management Department collaborated to address these issues. In March 2006, a questionnaire was mailed to landowners of properties greater than 100 acres in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Monterey counties. A total of 2,786 questionnaires were mailed, with 450 completed and returned (16 percent). The respondents were highly educated, holding degrees in areas other than …

An Analysis Of Online Customer Complaints In Multiple Sectors Of The Hotel Industry, Tianshu Zheng, Thomas R. Schrier, Michelle Millar

Hospitality Management

The Internet has become a highly used tool for communication. Through the use of online communities consumers are able to view as well as leave comments regarding their experiences. These comments can either be positive or negative. By examining the customer complaining behavior, the purpose of this study is to identify the differences between negative online complaints against luxury hotels and mid-scale hotels, and to provide managers with some insights to help them respond properly to different online complaints. Using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, online complaints will be analyzed. The findings of this study are expected to help hotel …

Enhancing The Quality Of Vet In Hong Kong: Recent Reforms And New Initiatives In Widening Participation In Tertiary Qualifications, David Lim Jan 2008

Enhancing The Quality Of Vet In Hong Kong: Recent Reforms And New Initiatives In Widening Participation In Tertiary Qualifications, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

As elsewhere, vocational education and training (VET) has a poor image in Hong Kong. To remove the stigma, the Vocational Training Council of Hong Kong embarked on pro‐active strategic planning to make it more relevant and cost‐effective, exposed long and widely held myths that VET is for dullards which leads only to low‐paid and low‐status jobs, provided a through‐train education system to ensure that VET is no longer an educational cul‐de‐sac, and sought external accreditation aggressively. Though it is early days, there is strong evidence that these strategies have worked.

The Dynamic Evolutionary History Of The Bananaquit (Coereba Flaveola) In The Caribbean Revealed By A Multigene Analysis, Eva Bellemain, Eldredge Bermingham, Robert Ricklefs Jan 2008

The Dynamic Evolutionary History Of The Bananaquit (Coereba Flaveola) In The Caribbean Revealed By A Multigene Analysis, Eva Bellemain, Eldredge Bermingham, Robert Ricklefs

Biology Department Faculty Works

BackgroundThe bananaquit (Coereba flaveola) is a small nectivorous and frugivorous emberizine bird (order Passeriformes) that is an abundant resident throughout the Caribbean region. We used multi-gene analyses to investigate the evolutionary history of this species throughout its distribution in the West Indies and in South and Middle America. We sequenced six mitochondrial genes (3744 base pairs) and three nuclear genes (2049 base pairs) for forty-four bananaquits and three outgroup species. We infer the ancestral area of the present-day bananaquit populations, report on the species' phylogenetic, biogeographic and evolutionary history, and propose scenarios for its diversification and range expansion.ResultsPhylogenetic concordance between …

An Examination On The Impact Of School Grade Configuration On Eighth Grade Student Academic Achievement In Reading, Writing, And Math, Joyce Lutrey Jan 2008

An Examination On The Impact Of School Grade Configuration On Eighth Grade Student Academic Achievement In Reading, Writing, And Math, Joyce Lutrey

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research effort was to examine the impact of grade configuration on eighth grade student achievement in Math, Reading, and Writing. The quantitative research design used publicly available data and studied the 2000 through 2007 Arizona standards-based, eighth grade student test results across six grade configurations for all Arizona eighth grade students. Additional variables included student gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and charter versus public schools.

Chi-square testing showed there were student achievement differences in Math, Reading, and Writing across grade configuration, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and between charters and public schools. These differences were likely due to the …
