Prospective Teachers' Development Of Whole Number Concepts And Operations During A Classroom Teaching Experiment, George Roy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A classroom teaching experiment was conducted to document prospective teachers' development of whole number concepts and operations. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the collective understanding of prospective teachers in an elementary mathematics content course. Design research methodology, specifically a classroom teaching experiment was the methodology selected for this study since it allows learning to be documented in a classroom environment and is iterative in nature. A revised hypothetical learning trajectory and instructional tasks from a previous classroom teaching experiment were used in this study (Andreasen, 2006). Research about children's development of whole number concepts and operations …

An Investigation Into Unitary Status And The Overrepresentation Of Black Students In School Discipline As Measured By Out-Of-Sch, Robin Dehlinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While many school districts in the state of Florida have achieved unitary status and are no longer under court jurisdiction, evidence that school districts continue to practice discipline policies that result in the disproportionate suspension of Black students can be found. Despite decades of desegregation, Black students continue to experience the devastating consequences of suspension and expulsion from school. The overrepresentation of Black students in the administration of school discipline is a serious concern for school districts. This study investigated if the attainment of unitary status resulted in equity in school discipline for Black students. Additionally, the study investigated the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study determines the particular components that are considered the best practices to use when implementing an e-Learning curriculum. Technical communicators and instructional designers have numerous development options to choose from. However, practices that work in academe do not always integrate well in a corporate setting, and what works for one corporation may not work for another. There is no singular methodology for developers to apply that enables e-Learning to fit every organization's needs. Research shows that to ensure a successful online learning implementation, a sound project management team must be in place at the beginning of the project planning. …
Beyond Postmodern Margins: Theorizing Postfeminist Consequences Through Popular Female Representation, Victoria Mosher
Beyond Postmodern Margins: Theorizing Postfeminist Consequences Through Popular Female Representation, Victoria Mosher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1988, Linda Nicholson and Nancy Fraser published an article entitled "Social Criticism Without Philosophy: An Encounter Between Feminism and Postmodernism," arguing that this essay would provide a jumping point for discussion between feminisms and postmodernisms within academia. Within this essay, Nicholson and Fraser largely disavow a number of second wave feminist theories due to their essentialist and foundationalist underpinnings in favor of a set of postmodernist frameworks that might help feminist theorists overcome these epistemological impediments. A "postmodern feminism," Nicholson and Fraser claim, would become "the theoretical counterpart of a broader, richer, more complex, and multilayered solidarity, the sort …

Constructing African American Histories In Central Florida, Katherine Parry
Constructing African American Histories In Central Florida, Katherine Parry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From the time of their occurrence up to the present, people have constructed and revised narratives about violent racial events in Florida. In the case of the racial violence in Ocoee and the lynching of July Perry, multiple accounts coexisted until one particular group in the 1990's contested earlier conservative white Southern narratives with new public memories containing African American perspectives of the events, demanding racial justice and memorialization of the events. A struggle over the power to construct this narrative resulted in compromises between the two sets of memories. While some goals were attained, the landscape of memorization remains …

A Numerical Analysis Approach For Estimating The Minimum Traveling Wave Speed For An Autocatalytic Reaction, Erika Blanken
A Numerical Analysis Approach For Estimating The Minimum Traveling Wave Speed For An Autocatalytic Reaction, Erika Blanken
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis studies the traveling wavefront created by the autocatalytic cubic chemical reaction A + 2B → 3B involving two chemical species A and B, where A is the reactant and B is the auto-catalyst. The diffusion coefficients for A and B are given by DA and DB. These coefficients differ as a result of the chemical species having different size and/or weight. Theoretical results show there exist bounds, v* and v*, depending on DB/DA, where for speeds v ≥ v*, a traveling wave solution exists, while for speeds v < v*, a solution does not exist. Moreover, if DB ≤ DA, and v* and v* are similar to one another and in the order of DB/DA when it is small. On the other hand, when DA ≤ DB there exists a minimum speed vmin, such that there is a traveling wave solution if the speed v > vmin. The determination of vmin is very important in determining …

Analysis Of Kolmogorov's Superposition Theorem And Its Implementation In Applications With Low And High Dimensional Data., Donald Bryant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we analyze Kolmogorov's superposition theorem for high dimensions. Our main goal is to explore and demonstrate the feasibility of an accurate implementation of Kolmogorov's theorem. First, based on Lorentz's ideas, we provide a thorough discussion on the proof and its numerical implementation of the theorem in dimension two. We present computational experiments which prove the feasibility of the theorem in applications of low dimensions (namely, dimensions two and three). Next, we present high dimensional extensions with complete and detailed proofs and provide the implementation that aims at applications with high dimensionality. The amalgamation of these ideas is …

This experiment was designed to determine which assessment method: continuous assessment (in the form of daily in-class quizzes), cumulative assessment (in the form of online homework), or project-based learning, best predicts student learning (dependent upon posttest grades) in an undergraduate mathematics course. Participants included 117 university-level undergraduate freshmen enrolled in a course titled "Mathematics for Calculus". Initially, a multiple regression model was formulated to model the relationship between the predictor variables (the continuous assessment, cumulative assessment, and project scores) versus the outcome variable (the posttest scores). However, due to the possibility of multicollinearity present between the cumulative assessment predictor variable …
Field Of View Effects On Reflexive Motor Response In Flight Simulation, Javier Covelli
Field Of View Effects On Reflexive Motor Response In Flight Simulation, Javier Covelli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) Head Mounted Display (HMD) or Head Worn Display (HWD) technology represents low-cost, wide Field of Regard (FOR), deployable systems when compared to traditional simulation facilities. However, given current technological limitations, HWD flight simulator implementations provide a limited effective Field of View (eFOV) far narrower than the normal human 200[degrees] horizontal and 135[degrees] vertical FOV. Developing a HWD with such a wide FOV is expensive but can increase the aviator's visual stimulus, perception, sense of presence and overall training effectiveness. This research and experimentation test this proposition by manipulating the eFOV of experienced pilots …

Trait Arousability And Its Impact On Adaptive Multimedia Training, Sae Schatz
Trait Arousability And Its Impact On Adaptive Multimedia Training, Sae Schatz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today's best intelligent, adaptive, multimedia trainers have shown excellent performance; however, their results still fall far-short of what good human tutors can achieve. The overarching thesis of this paper is that future intelligent, adaptive systems will be improved by taking into account relevant, consistent, and meaningful individual differences. Specifically, responding to individual differences among trainees will (a) form more accurate individual baselines within a training system, and (b) better inform system responses (so that they interpret and respond to observable data more appropriately). One variable to consider is trait arousability, which describes individual differences in sensitivity to stimuli. Individuals' arousability …
