Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study investigated the effects the use of cooperative learning method in English as a second language reading comprehension performance and how it improves the students' second language, their attitudes toward cooperative learning, and their motivation toward reading. Sixty ESL Saudi high school students from The Third Secondary School in Arrass City participated in this study and where divided into two groups (experimental group vs. control group). A pretest-posttest control group design was employed. Data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to test the differences between the experimental and the comparison group. The results of this analysis …

Comparative Study Between Two Esl Writing Approaches: Computer Processing Microsoft Word Vs. Hand Writing Of Two Freshmen College Saudi Student Groups., Ayed T. Al-Harbi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This comparative study investigated the effectiveness of two writing approaches, hand writing (using paper and pencil) and computer processing (using Microsoft Word), in improving the writing of English freshmen students at two colleges in Saudi Arabia. Three dependent variables: overall writing quality (OWQ), writing apprehension (WA), and attitudes toward writing with computer (ATWC) were measured based on two independent variables: gender and the medium used. The research was designed to assess whether students actually wrote better using word processing software than they did when writing with paper and pencil. One hundred college students studying English were selected from a population …

Response Rate Or Number Of Repetitions: Which Aspect Of Drill And Practice Testing Most Contributes To Paired-Associate Learning., Scott Davis Jan 2008

Response Rate Or Number Of Repetitions: Which Aspect Of Drill And Practice Testing Most Contributes To Paired-Associate Learning., Scott Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Precision teaching methods began in the 1960s and have grown in utility and popularity over the last four decades (Downer, 2007). The methods are used to teach across multiple contents with an emphasis in achieving fluency as opposed to mere accuracy. Speed drills, frequently used to determine the learner's current level of fluency, were found to have a significant treatment effect on learning (McGreevy, 1978; Scott, Wolking, Stoutimore, & Harris, 1990; White & Haring, 1976). The purpose of this study is to isolate and measure the treatment effect of two key aspects of the speed drill and practice component of …

The entries of the journals of six Japanese students in an ESL class collected over an eight-week period served as the main source of data for this research project. Three analyses wert! performed: the accuracy order of the articles (the. al an. and@). possessives. and other determiners: the accuracy order of predeterminers. central determiners. and postdeterminers: and an error analysis of the articles a/an. the. and the@ article. The following major findings emerged: the accuracy order of the English …

Optical Biosensors: Sparrow Biosensor And Photonic Crystal-Based Fluorescence Enhancement., Joshua Ryan Nightingale Jan 2008

Optical Biosensors: Sparrow Biosensor And Photonic Crystal-Based Fluorescence Enhancement., Joshua Ryan Nightingale

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Biosensors are used to convert a biological change into a quantifiable signal that can be output via a transducer and are commonly used for the detection and identification of biological agents. Optical biosensors are a class of biosensors that make use of light as the transduced signal and are desirable for their highly sensitive, often non-destructive analyte analysis. Two such optical biosensors being investigated are the Stacked Planar Affinity Regulated Resonant Optical Waveguide (SPARROW) biosensor and the photonic crystal-based, resonant-enhanced fluorescence sensor. These sensors make use of stacked, planar, resonant dielectric waveguides and periodic optical nanostructures, respectively, for biomolecule detection. …

Lead-Based Residential Paint In Soils: A Dissolution And A Spatial Analysis Prevention Approach., Sofia Campos Gonzalez Jan 2008

Lead-Based Residential Paint In Soils: A Dissolution And A Spatial Analysis Prevention Approach., Sofia Campos Gonzalez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For many years, lead was used to make the white pigment used in residential paints. Although lead paint was finally banned for residential use in 1978, the environmental legacy of contaminated residences and adjacent soils remains. Lead poisoning continues to be a major public health issue. Those at most risk for lead poisoning are children, especially those who 1) live in low quality housing, or those undergoing unsafe restoration or repainting jobs, that were built before 1978, 2) have parents with lead-based hobbies or occupations, and 3) live near lead mining or processing facilities. Other sources of exposure include inner-city …

The Felt Needs Of Adult Learners In Today's College Environment: The Growing Significance Of Non-Traditional Students., Antoinette Hando Jan 2008

The Felt Needs Of Adult Learners In Today's College Environment: The Growing Significance Of Non-Traditional Students., Antoinette Hando

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A survey was used to identify the felt needs of non-traditional students. The first section identified non-traditional students and their overall demographics. In the needs analysis three major factors were found: flexibility of program requirements, time flexibility and the ability to understand the needs of non-traditional students were identified. These correlated with the literature review done on non-traditional learners. The last section dealt with their feelings concerning technology. It also was found to be comparable to the literature review, which talked about demographics, felt needs, and use of technology. Findings indicated that these nontraditional students felt that new technology was …

The Third 'I': Creating Of The Fictional History Of Marcus Hubbard., Alexander Pawlowski Jan 2008

The Third 'I': Creating Of The Fictional History Of Marcus Hubbard., Alexander Pawlowski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis, you will read how I used a specific actor’s tool of analysis, called “The Three ‘I’s,” to create the character of Marcus Hubbard in WVU’s production of Lillian Hellman’s Another Part of the Forest . This technique consists of using “Investigation,” “Inference” and “Invention” to create a biography of the character. This is done so that the actor may know all of the major events in the character’s life, even those not seemingly important to the story of the play. These events shape the character and give him a foundation for the motivations that make him do …

Exchange Of The Feminine: Representations Of Multiple Marginality In Contemporary West Virginia Fiction., David E. Wilson Jan 2008

Exchange Of The Feminine: Representations Of Multiple Marginality In Contemporary West Virginia Fiction., David E. Wilson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study engages the short stories and novels of three contemporary fiction writers: acclaimed native West Virginians Denise Giardina and Breece D’J Pancake, and Laura Albert, a New York City native who, for a time, published under the pseudonym JT LeRoy. Using West Virginia as their settings, these authors have created Mountain State characters whose stratified marginality in heteronormative Appalachian society stems from their failure to meet traditional expectations of gender and sexuality. Those multiply marginal characters in West Virginia fiction who best establish a general accord do so through benign public personae, ancillary labor occupations and supportive kinship roles. …

Will Penal Populism In Japan Decline?: A Discussion, Setsuo Miyazawa Jan 2008

Will Penal Populism In Japan Decline?: A Discussion, Setsuo Miyazawa

Faculty Scholarship

I intend to play the role of discussant at a session where five papers have been presented and to draw implications from the perspective I presented in Miyazawa (2007a ). I revise my thesis about penal populism in Japan slightly using the concept of "leadership from the front "presented by Johnson .However, I still conclude that penal populism in Japan is not likely to decline in the near future.

Due Process Traditionalism, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2008

Due Process Traditionalism, Cass R. Sunstein

Michigan Law Review

In important cases, the Supreme Court has limited the scope of "substantive due process" by reference to tradition, but it has yet to explain why it has done so. Due process traditionalism might be defended in several distinctive ways. The most ambitious defense draws on a set of ideas associated with Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek, who suggested that traditions have special credentials by virtue of their acceptance by many minds. But this defense runs into three problems. Those who have participated in a tradition may not have accepted any relevant proposition; they might suffer from a systematic bias; and …

Judicial Compensation And The Definition Of Judicial Power In The Early Republic, James E. Pfander Jan 2008

Judicial Compensation And The Definition Of Judicial Power In The Early Republic, James E. Pfander

Michigan Law Review

Article III's provision for the compensation of federal judges has been much celebrated for the no-diminution provision that forecloses judicial pay cuts. But other features of Article Ill's compensation provision have largely escaped notice. In particular, little attention has been paid to the framers' apparent expectation that Congress would compensate federal judges with salaries alone, payable from the treasury at stated times. Article III's presumption in favor of salary-based compensation may rule out fee-based compensation, which was a common form of judicial compensation in England and the colonies but had grown controversial by the time of the framing. Among other …

Unruly Difference: The Politics Of Stigma And The Space Of The Sacred, Ellen Kaplan Jan 2008

Unruly Difference: The Politics Of Stigma And The Space Of The Sacred, Ellen Kaplan

Theatre: Faculty Publications

This essay looks at three contemporary Jewish American playwrights: Tony Kushner, Martin Sherman and Deb Margolin, whose plays ask fundamental questions about Jewish identity in its political, cultural and spiritual dimensions. Breaking from the concerns of their theatrical predecessors, most of whom ignored or disguised their Jewish roots, these playwrights draw on profoundly Jewish concepts to reconfigure narratives of redemption, obligation, ethical community, and Messianic utopianism. Their plays are characterized by a sensibility of “unruly difference.” Attracted by the politics of marginality; these writers re-imagine otherness in plays that celebrate a different understanding of faith and conjure the sublime. By …

Speaking The Language Of Integration: A Case Study Of South Boulevard Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet, Heather Kathleen Olson Beal Jan 2008

Speaking The Language Of Integration: A Case Study Of South Boulevard Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet, Heather Kathleen Olson Beal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Racial segregation and an achievement gap persist despite the promises of Brown vs. Board of Education (1954). In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, public schools are 83% Black, while nearly one-third of all children attend private schools which are 86% White. South Boulevard (SB) Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet Elementary is a counterexample because it has achieved integration and academic achievement well above district and state averages on high stakes tests. This research explores the culture of SB’s immersion magnet program in relation to its success as an integrated public school with high student achievement and explores the factors that motivated a …

Participant Positioning And The Positioning Of Participatory Pronouns In The Academic Lecture, Robert Thomas Connor Jan 2008

Participant Positioning And The Positioning Of Participatory Pronouns In The Academic Lecture, Robert Thomas Connor

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Through a research approach of emergence applied to a corpus of academic letures, I developed a theory to explicate the referents of a class of frequently used pronouns (I, you, and we), which I term the Participatory Pronouns. My theory of the Positioning of Participatory Pronouns resolves the main practical concern of the research participants, which is to place their utterances in contexts for authoritative, intellectually sound, and socially relevant interpretation. At the theoretical level, my theory is a specification of Relevance Theory and resolves disparate previous analyses of pronouns. Overall, my work provides a new paradigm for how referents …

Effect Of Hydrology On The Structure And Function Of Mangrove Ecosystems In The Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve, Vietnam, Loi Tan Le

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The influence of hydrology on the mangrove forests of Vietnam has received little scientific attention, even though hydrology is recognized as the primary forcing function in mangrove ecosystems worldwide. The purpose of this dissertation research was to determine the effects of hydrology on specific structural attributes and functional processes within the mangrove forests of Can Gio, a province in southeastern Vietnam. Khe Vinh (KV) and Mui O (MO), two locations within compartment 17 of the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve, were chosen as study sites. This research addressed two questions: (1) What are the characteristics of the hydrological regime at …

Learning Styles And Student's Perception Of Teachers' Attitudes And Its Relation To Truancy Among African Americans Students In Secondary Education, Kenyetta Quenishia Nelson-Smith Jan 2008

Learning Styles And Student's Perception Of Teachers' Attitudes And Its Relation To Truancy Among African Americans Students In Secondary Education, Kenyetta Quenishia Nelson-Smith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many researchers have examined the effect of truancy and student achievement. However, there has been little or no focus on the effect of truancy and non-attendance among ethnic minorities. The current study examined how African American students’ learning styles and their perceptions of teachers’ attitudes toward them and the learning environment influenced their decision to become high truants. Additionally, the study sought to find if selected demographic factors had any relevance on the truancy rate of African American students. The researcher used several assessment instruments to measure the variables being tested. The Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire (ILS), developed by …
