Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This article describes an action research study of student word identification. The targeted population consisted of Pre-Kindergarten students in three elementary schools located in mid-western communities. Post intervention data indicated an increase in students' word identification skills. The researchers recommended that word wall activities should be used for the implementation of improvement of word identification skills. Teachers planning to use word wall activities should determine at which rate new words would be introduced within their classroom.

A Study Of The Irish Struggle Against English Oppression, Christopher Burke Jan 2008

A Study Of The Irish Struggle Against English Oppression, Christopher Burke

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The Plight Freedom. What does it mean and where does it come from? Certainly there are many forms of freedom which exist on many levels. When one person has a desire to be free, what circumstances must exist to drive that longing? A single human wishing for freedom might be considered the 'bottom of the food-chain' on the grand scale of liberty, but a single mind can become the germination for all actions toward that goal. In the case of a population, can freedom be such a difficult prize if millions of people clamor for it? As for nations, is …

An Indistinct Earth: Stories, Stephen Janes Jan 2008

An Indistinct Earth: Stories, Stephen Janes

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

To write constitutes a supreme faith. Not merely in the idea of oneself as a writer, but also in the subject and in the audience. When something is put out into the universe, it floats there. If no one grabs it, it stays floating. Nabokov writes, "A work of art has no importance whatever to society. It is only important to the individual" (Nabokov, 22). It is the individual that makes up society. Therefore, art that does not touch one man cannot touch all men. The idea of a perfect audience or a perfect listener is comparable for man's search …

Effects Of Statin Medications On Health Related Behaviors, Stephen M. Timchack Jan 2008

Effects Of Statin Medications On Health Related Behaviors, Stephen M. Timchack

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The current study focuses on the psychological effects of statin medications. Specifically, this study examines the health related beliefs and behaviors that may be altered by the consumption of this fast acting class of life saving drugs. Although the statin class of medication generally produces favorable physiological results, as evidenced by reduced levels of serum cholesterol, and in some case increases in high density lipoproteins, the health related belief system and heath related behaviors may actually be altered in a negative fashion by engendering a sense of overconfidence; this in turn may alter beliefs and diminish the importance of adhering …

Super Fuzzy Matrices And Super Fuzzy Models For Social Scientists, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Amal

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The concept of supermatrix for social scientists was first introduced by Paul Horst. The main purpose of his book was to introduce this concept to social scientists, students, teachers and research workers who lacked mathematical training. He wanted them to be equipped in a branch of mathematics that was increasingly valuable for the analysis of scientific data. This book introduces the concept of fuzzy super matrices and operations on them. The author has provided only those operations on fuzzy supermatrices that are essential for developing super fuzzy multi expert models. We do not indulge in labourious use of suffixes or …

The Impact Of Donald A. Mcgavran’S Church Growth Missiology On The Church Of The Nazarene, Gary L. Mcintosh

On February 23, 2004 I interviewed Bill Sullivan by phone regarding the development of the Church Growth Movement in the Church of the Nazarene. The interview was recorded, transcribed, and then sent to Dr. Sullivan for his review. After receiving his edits, I wrote the following history of how Donald A. McGavran’s Church Growth missiology impacted the Church of the Nazarene. As the reader will discover, Bill Sullivan was the primary architect of translating Church Growth theory into action within this denomination.

A History In Limbo: A Human Rights Perspective On Conflict-Ridden Nepal, Claire Mueller Jan 2008

A History In Limbo: A Human Rights Perspective On Conflict-Ridden Nepal, Claire Mueller

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Nepal is at a historical junction, the recent victory of the second People’s Movement garnering a plethora of democratic reforms. Since the end of April, King Gyanendra has reinstated the House of Representatives, which then declared its supremacy and dramatically curtailed the king’s powers. Nepal has been declared a secular state; the Royal Nepal Army has been transformed the Nepali Army; a ceasefire has been created between the army and the Maoists - who are also participating in peace talks; and the seven-party alliance and the Maoists held a summit at which they agreed to frame an interim statute, form …

A mixed-method approach was used to discover the methods of formative evaluation used in English Departments in Baccalaureate Liberal Arts Colleges. A web survey determined revealed these methods in use. From the responding institutions, faculty from three case-study institutions reflecting best practices participated in interviews and document analysis to determine: what dimensions of teaching are evaluated through different methods, how …
