Sustaining Indigenous Futures? Welfare Reform And Responsibility For The Other, Cate Thill
Sustaining Indigenous Futures? Welfare Reform And Responsibility For The Other, Cate Thill
Arts Conference Papers
Debates about the provision of welfare over the past decade have been founded upon an increasing concern with the responsibilities of welfare recipients. In Australia, as elsewhere, the emphasis has been on recipients’ responsibility to rise above their circumstances (no matter how constraining) in order to ‘give something back’ to society. This practice of ‘responsibilisation’ has recently been extended to parents and residents of certain remote Northern Territory and Far North Queensland communities, in response to an inquiry into the protection of Aboriginal children from sexual abuse (Northern Territory Government 2007). Parents and community members have an enforceable obligation to …

Examining Career-Related Mentoring And Managerial Performance Across Cultures: A Multilevel Analysis, William A. Gentry, Todd J. Weber, Golnaz Sadri
Examining Career-Related Mentoring And Managerial Performance Across Cultures: A Multilevel Analysis, William A. Gentry, Todd J. Weber, Golnaz Sadri
Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications
The benefits of the mentoring relationship for protégés have been a primary focus in the mentoring literature. Researchers have recently begun to examine how mentoring can benefit the mentor. The purpose of the present study is to examine whether direct report-ratings of a manager’s career-related mentoring behaviors are related to boss-ratings of that manager’s performance. In addition, this study assesses whether the cultural background of the manager moderates the career-related mentoring–performance relationship via multilevel methodology. Results reveal that managers who are rated by their direct reports as engaging in career-related mentoring behaviors are perceived as better performers by their bosses. …
Intercultural Sensitivity And Conflict Management Styles In Cross-Cultural Organizational Situations, Tong Yu, Guo-Ming Chen
Intercultural Sensitivity And Conflict Management Styles In Cross-Cultural Organizational Situations, Tong Yu, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Increased cultural diversity in work places has aroused considerable attention to conflict management and intercultural sensitivity. However, few studies have investigated these two concepts together. The present study aims to bridge the gap in this line of research with an examination between intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles in a hypothetical cross-cultural organizational situation. The results from 253 participants indicate that significantly positive and negative relationships exist among the dimensions of the two concepts. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed as well.

Bells Of Change: Kathak Dance, Women And Modernity In India, Pallabi Chakravorty
Dance Faculty Works
The first critical study of Kathak dance within the discourses of the modern and the global, tracing the arc of two centuries of Kathak: the colonial nautch dance, classical Kathak under nationalism and postcolonialism and 'innovation' and 'new directions' under transnationalism and globalization. It blends various approaches from anthropology, ethnomusicology, and performance, media and gender studies to map the journey of Kathak from baijis and tawaifs to the global stage. The book uses dance as a lens to explore the interaction between the actors and forces of cultural change from power and patronage to television and film.

Social Cohesion And Cultural Expressions: The Case Of The Sacred Textiles In The Armenian Orthodox Churches Of Istanbul, Marlene R. Breu, Ronald T. Marchese
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Prologue
The social and cultural history of Armenians is long; indeed one cannot fully appreciate its parameters without deeper investigation. This paper reports on a segment of Armenian history— the sacred historical textiles housed in the Armenian Orthodox Churches of Istanbul, Turkey. These artifacts had never before been studied, although a select few objects produced in Istanbul have been published in books devoted to the Armenian collections in Jerusalem, Etchmiadzin (Armenia), and the Sis collection from Anatolia currently in Beirut, Lebanon. Illuminated manuscripts receive the greatest attention among the historical Armenian religious artifacts, followed by stone, metal and wooden objects. …

The Centre For Advanced Textiles: A Case Study In Uk Digital Textile Culture, Eulanda A. Sanders
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
If textiles serve as records of a culture’s history and values, how should we approach and evaluate the integration of digitally-created and digitally-produced textiles? How do the application of digital technologies encourage or inhibit cultural expressions?
Government and academic institutions in the United Kingdom (UK) are actively trying to support and invigorate what is being called the ‘research culture’ in the UK, yet the ability to create and maintain sustainable research centres in the creative textile fields have proven to be difficult. Through reflectively analysing the creation, re-evaluation and re-focusing of the Centre for Advanced Textiles (CAT) at Glasgow School …

Cinematic Jujitsu: Resisting White Hegemony Through The American Dream In Spike Lee’S Malcolm X, Kristen Hoerl
Cinematic Jujitsu: Resisting White Hegemony Through The American Dream In Spike Lee’S Malcolm X, Kristen Hoerl
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
Spike Lee’s film Malcolm X (1992) presented Malcolm X’s life story using the narrative framework of the American Dream myth central to liberal ideology. Working from Gramsci’s notion of common sense in the process of hegemony, I explain how Lee appealed to this mythic structure underlying American popular culture to give a platform to Malcolm X’s controversial ideas. By adopting a common sense narrative to tell Malcolm X’s life story, this movie functioned as a form of cinematic jujitsu that invited critical consciousness about the contradictions between liberal ideology and the life experiences of racially excluded groups. Other formal devices …
Capitalizing On Affect: Viagra (In)Action, Kristin A. Swenson
Capitalizing On Affect: Viagra (In)Action, Kristin A. Swenson
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
Recent cultural criticisms of Viagra’s advertisements and promotional materials have argued that rhetorical constructions of Viagra users reestablish a hegemonic masculinity premised on heterosexual standards of traditional gender norms (Baglia, 2005; Bordo, 2000; Loe, 2004). Cultural critics have also noted that Viagra’s promotional materials allow “for alternative readings by potential users who do not fall into the category of the ‘traditional/ideal’ Viagra user” including women and homosexual men (Mamo & Fishman, 2001, p. 14). What most criticisms fail to take into account is that Viagra, like other lifestyle drugs, does not only reestablish cultural constructs of the contemporary gendered body …
Media Literacy In The Digital Age: Implications For Scholars And Students, Barbara R. Burke
Media Literacy In The Digital Age: Implications For Scholars And Students, Barbara R. Burke
Communication, Media, and Rhetoric Publications
Advocates of the practice assert becoming media literate may be the way to take control, and to be better able to identify and control the borders between the real world and the world manufactured by the media. This paper embraces this assertion, and suggests advocating expanding our understandings of media literacy, and creating new strategies for analysis and critique of New Media. To make this argument, the paper will describe American attempts at shaping media education to foster media literacy. Then, a comparison between Campbell’s system and Federov’s modules of media literacy will be offered. Finally, two new elements of …

How American Student Journalists At A College Newspaper Consume, Perceive, And Disseminate News And Information About China, Xiaohua Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the increase of cooperation between America and China, the average person's perception of the other country could be an important factor that influences the development of the relationship between these countries. This study was designed to explore how Americans student journalists view China and how these student journalists select the news for a campus newspaper that might influence their readers' perceptions of China. Student journalists not only represent American youth but also act as connectors and filters between a huge flow of information outside and students on campus. A convenience census sample of student journalists at a campus newspaper …
Outside The Frame: Towards A Phenomenology Of Texts And Technology, Anthony Crisafi
Outside The Frame: Towards A Phenomenology Of Texts And Technology, Anthony Crisafi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The subject of my dissertation is how phenomenology can be used as a tool for understanding the intersection between texts and technology. What I am suggesting here is that, specifically in connection with the focus of our program in Texts and Technology, there are very significant questions concerning how digital communications technology extends our humanity, and more importantly what kind of epistemological and ontological questions are raised because of this. There needs to be a coherent theory for Texts and Technology that will help us to understand this shift, and I feel that this should be the main focus for …

Art And Literature In A Servant-Leadership Curriculum For Undergraduate Female Students Who Are From Mexican Migrant Farm Worker Backgrounds, Patricia Valdes
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
This paper proposes a university leadership curriculum for undergraduate female students who are from Mexican migrant farm worker backgrounds. The curriculum incorporates the philosophy of servant-leadership and utilizes literature and art to provide media that are congruent with the cultural background of the students. The curriculum's intent is three-fold: a) to improve the capacity of Latina migrant students to be leaders and fulfill leadership roles in organizations and communities; b) to contribute to the understanding of servant-leadership and its possible congruency with the culture of female Mexican migrant students; and c) to add to the current knowledge of leadership in …
The Airy And The Irrational: Elaborating On The Meanings Of The Petimetra From A Selection Of Goya’S Caprichos And The Spanish Periodical El Censor*, Ana Hontanilla
Decimonónica
In the final years of the eighteenth century, a number of Francisco de Goya’s etchings from his collection known as Caprichos visually inscribed the female within the literary production of his time, most evidently perhaps within the satirical publication El Censor.1 The eighteenth-century Spanish female prototype, depicted in a number of El Censor’s essays and later seen in a few of Goya’s Caprichos, was the petimetra: a cultural invention employed and exploited with misogynist tone. The petimetra was a contemporary fashionably dressed woman, mainly adopting French styles, who may equally have been a member of the …

Transnational Law, Peer Zumbansen
Transnational Law, Peer Zumbansen
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
This chapter traces the development of the concept of Transnational Law since Philip Jessup's Storrs Lectures at Yale Law School in 1955. Jessup had famously challenged the doctrinal and conceptual boundaries of both public and private international law to suggest that another concept be more adequately suited to capture the myriad normative and transactional relations across national borders. "I shall use", Jessup wrote, "the term 'transnational law' to include all law which regulates actions or events that transcend national frontiers. Both public and private international law are included, as are other rules which do not wholly fit into such standard …

New Governance' In European Corporate Law Regulation As Transnational Legal Pluralism, Peer Zumbansen
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
The present transformation of European corporate governance regulation mirrors the challenges that have been facing the EUs continuously evolving polity, marked by tensions between centralized integration programs on the one hand and Member States embedded capitalisms, path-dependencies and rent-seeking on the other. As longstanding concerns with remaining obstacles to more mobility for workers, services, business entities and capital in recent years are aligned with post-Lisbon commitments to creating the Worlds leading competitive market, European corporate governance regulation [ECGR] has become exposed to and implicated in a set of highly dynamic regulatory experiments. In this context, New Governance offers itself as …
Exploring Interdisciplinary Prayer Research In A Health Context, E. James Baesler
Exploring Interdisciplinary Prayer Research In A Health Context, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Communication, Psychology, and Sociology are three leading academic disciplines engaged in the social scientific study of prayer, the spiritual communication between a believer(s) and God, but rarely do these disciplines collaborate in interdisciplinary prayer scholarship. Possibilities for interdisciplinary prayer research in a health context are explored through a review of the literature and academic interviews. Interdisciplinary linkages in the prayer-health context are organized in an integral "all-quadrant" theoretical model, and an assessment of the viability of interdisciplinary prayer-health research is considered.
The Self-Defensive Cognition Of Self-Defense, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan
The Self-Defensive Cognition Of Self-Defense, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Why do certain self-defense cases - ones, e.g., involving battered women who kill their sleeping abusers, or beleaguered commuters who shoot panhandling minority teens - provoke intense political conflict? The conventional and seemingly obvious answer is that people judge such cases in a politically partisan fashion. This paper, however, suggests a subtler and more complex explanation. Social psychologists have shown that individuals resolve factual ambiguities in a manner supportive of their defining values, both to minimize dissonance and to protect their connection to others who share their commitments. This form of self-defensive cognition, it is submitted, shapes individuals' perceptions of …
