Discourse Analysis As An Approach To Intercultural Competence In The Advanced Efl Classroom, Sue Norton Jan 2008

Discourse Analysis As An Approach To Intercultural Competence In The Advanced Efl Classroom, Sue Norton

Level 3

In 1991 Michael McCarthy wrote in his Preface to Discourse Analysis for Language Teachers that discourse analysis is ‘not a method of teaching languages; it is a way of describing and understanding how language is used’. By 1994 he had reformulated his position and, with Ronald Carter, published Language as Discourse: Perspectives for Language Teaching, which argued in favour of providing students with a metalanguage by which to analyse the language they were learning. These days, owing to the work of McCarthy, Carter, and others, the basics of discourse analysis can indeed comprise an appropriate subject matter for the advanced …

Attitudinal And Motivational Factors That Most Influence A Change Of Attitude Toward The Learning Of Spanish Language And Culture, Lucy Campbell

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to investigate Indiana State University's Foreign Language program for Spanish 102 regarding attitudinal and motivational factors that influence student's changes of attitude toward different aspects of the Hispanic culture. This program requires students to take a foreign-language course for two semesters in order to meet overall graduation requirements. This research was based on Dr. Robert C. Gardner's (1985a, 2005) Attitude and Motivation Investigations theory. It used the Attitude/Motivational Test Battery (AMTB) instrument developed by Gardner (2004) to measure factors on Attitude and Motivation. These 5 factors were as follows: (1) Attitude toward the learning situation, (2) Integrativeness, …

Prosocial Behaviors In Context: Examining The Role Of Children’S Social Companions, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Gustavo Carlo, Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 2008

Prosocial Behaviors In Context: Examining The Role Of Children’S Social Companions, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Gustavo Carlo, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examines the role of immediate social companions in the prosocial behaviors of children from two cultural communities from the USA and the Philippines. Materials for this study comprised behavioral observations drawn from the Six Cultures Study—with 612 five-minute observations of 23 children (12 girls, 11 boys) from Orchard Town, MA, and 570 observations of 24 children (12 girls, 12 boys) from Tarong, Philippines, ranging in age from 3 to 11 years. Data were coded for instances of prosocial behaviors, as well as characteristics of social companions (age and relationship to actor). Results revealed several interesting findings. First, frequency …

Negotiating And Navigating The Rough Terrain Of Transnational Feminist Research, Tanya Saroj Bakhru Jan 2008

Negotiating And Navigating The Rough Terrain Of Transnational Feminist Research, Tanya Saroj Bakhru

Faculty Publications, Social Sciences

This article examines aspects of feminist methodology pertinent to carrying out transnational research within an era of globalization. I explore the use of self-reflexivity, engagement with conceptualizations of insider/outsider, and the employment of feminist critiques of notions of objectivity within the research process as feminist methodological tools relevant to transnational feminist research. I argue that in an age of globalization, such methodological frameworks and tools are necessary in research committed to feminist contestations of globalization in that the nature of transnational research sustains an ever dynamic and shifting landscape of personal, political, and geographical relationships. This article draws upon my …

Transitional Justice In A Transnational World: The Ambiguous Role Of Law, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2008

Transitional Justice In A Transnational World: The Ambiguous Role Of Law, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

In situations of military, political or economic transition, the reassessment of the role of law in the transition process becomes a crucial site of a people's or a nation's negotiating the past, present and future. Allusions to a tabula rasa or an annee zero after traumatic collapses of societal order, however, turn into ill-fated attempts to address the challenges of confronting the past when building the future. The law's concern with nations that struggle with transition expresses itself through hybrid concepts such as transitional or post-conflict justice, restorative justice, or reconciliation. This paper revisits these instantiations and places them in …

An Emerging Native Language Education Framework For Reservation Public Schools With Mixed Populations, Phyllis B. Ngai Jan 2008

An Emerging Native Language Education Framework For Reservation Public Schools With Mixed Populations, Phyllis B. Ngai

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Currently, we lack a viable indigenous language education framework for reservation public schools with mixed Native and non-Native student populations. Can stakeholders holding different and often conflicting points of view agree to accept and nurture Native language education programs in the public school arena? In search of a workable framework that will guide language education efforts acceptable to most (if not all) stakeholders in mixed districts, the author gathered grassroots input across communities with mixed populations on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. Study participants suggested approaches for dealing with existing obstacles and ways to include diverse local perspectives. The …

Female Mate Choice Is Influenced By Male Sport Participation, Albrecht I. Schulte-Hostedde, Mark A. Eys, Krista Johnson Jan 2008

Female Mate Choice Is Influenced By Male Sport Participation, Albrecht I. Schulte-Hostedde, Mark A. Eys, Krista Johnson

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Sexual selection theory argues that females invest more heavily in reproduction than males and thus tend to be choosier in terms of mate choice. Sport may provide a context within which females can gain information about male quality to inform this choice. Males may be able to display attractive traits such as athleticism, strength, and physique to females while participating in sport. We predicted that females would favor males that participated in team sports over individual sports and non-athletes because team sport athletes may be more likely to display qualities such as the ability to work well with others and …

E-Poetry: Between Image And Performance -- A Cultural Analysis, Jan Baetens, Jan Van Looy Jan 2008

E-Poetry: Between Image And Performance -- A Cultural Analysis, Jan Baetens, Jan Van Looy

The Journal of e-Media Studies

By establishing an opposition between two ways of studying e-poetry: the patrimonial stance, which historicizes and canonizes a corpus and the cultural stance, which discusses e-poetry in its social context, the article makes a plea for a broad, cultural approach to electronic reading and writing. This approach defines e-poetry in terms of performance, placing a strong emphasis on the mediated and often networked environment in which e-poetry creation and reception take place. The close reading of two examples by Pierre Alferi and Eric Sadin, two prominent authors of electronic literature in France, further illustrates the idea of writing and reading …

Literacy, Sexuality, Pedagogy: Theory And Practice For Composition Studies, Jonathan Alexander Jan 2008

Literacy, Sexuality, Pedagogy: Theory And Practice For Composition Studies, Jonathan Alexander

All USU Press Publications

Despite its centrality to much of contemporary personal and public discourse, sexuality remains infrequently discussed in composition courses and in our discipline at large. Moreover, its complicated relationship to discourse, to the very language we use to describe and define our worlds, is woefully understudied in our discipline. Talk and writing about sexuality surround us. Not only does the discourse of sexuality surround us, but sexuality itself forms a core set of complex discourses through which we approach, make sense of, and construct a variety of meanings, politics, and identities. In Literacy, Sexuality, Pedagogy, Jonathan Alexander argues for the development …

The Fierce Tribe, Mickey Weems Jan 2008

The Fierce Tribe, Mickey Weems

All USU Press Publications

In this ethnography that documents the folk nature of popular culture, Mickey Weems applies interdisciplinary interpretation to a subject that demands such a breakdown of intellectual boundaries. The Circuit, an expression of gay culture, comprises large dance events—gatherings, celebrations, communions, festivals. Music and dance drive complex, shared performances—electronic house music played by professional DJs and mass ecstatic dancing that engenders communitas. Other performances, from drag queens and concerts to contests, theatrics, and the individual display of muscular bodies are part of the festivities.

Body sculpting through muscle building is strongly associated with the Circuit, and masculine aggression is both displayed …

Uncertainty Regulation, Motivation, And Daily Life Events Across Cultures, Yang Ye Jan 2008

Uncertainty Regulation, Motivation, And Daily Life Events Across Cultures, Yang Ye

Digitized Theses

The purpose of the present study is to examine in both achievement and social domains how motives predict daily life experiences and how the associations between motives and daily experiences are moderated by uncertainty orientation and country. Participants in China and Canada first participated in a mass-testing session in which their uncertainty orientation, affiliation-related motives, and achievement-related motives were assessed. Then subjects participated in a 2-week daily study session in which they made daily reports of life events. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to predict daily social/achievement events (in level-1) with the individual differences of uncertainty orientation, affiliation/achievement-related motives, and …

Old Beginnings: The Re-Inscription Of Masculine Domination At The New Millennium In Margaret Atwood's Oryx And Crake, Lacie M. Semenovich Jan 2008

Old Beginnings: The Re-Inscription Of Masculine Domination At The New Millennium In Margaret Atwood's Oryx And Crake, Lacie M. Semenovich

ETD Archive

This essay analyzes the role of masculine domination in the twenty-first century as portrayed in Margaret Atwood's 2003 novel of speculative fiction, Oryx and Crake. I argue that Atwood's uncharacteristic choice of male primary characters highlights the masculine/feminine and the human/nature binaries in order to critique the destructiveness of a continued masculine domination of nature and the feminine. I utilize Donna Haraway's theory of speculative fiction as an alternative space in which we can begin to explore new relationships with nature to critique Atwood's novel. In my first chapter, I posit that Atwood utilizes Judeo-Christian allusions to situate the novel …

An Army Of Housewives: Women’S Wartime Columns In Two Mainstream Israeli Newspapers, Shira Klein Jan 2008

An Army Of Housewives: Women’S Wartime Columns In Two Mainstream Israeli Newspapers, Shira Klein

History Faculty Articles and Research

At the height of Israel's 1948 war, women's columns in the newspapers Ha'aretz and Ma‘ariv offered readers advice, stories, and letters. They focused on domestic practices such as preparing food, sewing clothes, dressing fashionably and providing comfort. At first glance, they completely ignored the war raging around them. However, this essay shows that the columnists portrayed housewives' roles, no less than men's front-line fighting, as an important part of the nation's wartime effort. The columnists and their responding readers took the housewives' domestic practices, which made them seem so unfit for battle and turned them into a battlefield of their …

Alphabetical Lives: Early Modern German Biographical Lexicons And Encyclopedias, Richard G. Cole Jan 2008

Alphabetical Lives: Early Modern German Biographical Lexicons And Encyclopedias, Richard G. Cole

Quidditas

Those who appear obvious to us as “major players” in past eras may in part result from an unintended consequence of the work of early modern biographical lexicographers. By the eighteenth century, there were enough printed sources and available archival materials to deluge or even overwhelm historians and biographers with information about past actors of sixteenth century history. Those biographical lexicographers made choices about whom to give prominence and whom to minimize or ignore in their works.

In Vitro And In Vivo Evidence For Lack Of Endovascular Remodeling By Third Trimester Trophoblasts, S. Kalkunte, Z. Lai, N. Tewari, Clinton O. Chichester Iii, R. Romero, J. Padbury, S. Sharma

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The placental–decidual interaction through invading trophoblasts determines whether a physiological transformation of the uterine spiral arteries is established or not. Trophoblast-orchestrated artery remodeling is central to normal placentation. Dysregulated uteroplacental interaction and vascular remodeling are thought to be associated with the molecular events underlying the pathology of late pregnancy anomalies including preeclampsia. Although the exact gestational age at which trophoblast invasion ceases is not known, it remains unclear whether late pregnancy trophoblasts retain the ability to transform the uterine arteries. Here, we have developed a dual cell, in vitro culture system that mimics the vascular remodeling events during …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

In January 2003, the US Environmental Protection Agency sponsored a ‘‘roundtable discussion’’ to develop a consensus on the relationship between eutrophication and harmful algal blooms (HABs), specifically targeting those relationships for which management actions may be appropriate. Academic, federal, and state agency representatives were in attendance. The following seven statements were unanimously adopted by attendees based on review and analysis of current as well as pertinent previous data:

(1) Degraded water quality from increased nutrient pollution promotes the development and persistence of many HABs and is one of the reasons for their expansion in the U.S. and other nations;

(2) …
