Determining The Optimal Contact Length For A Metal/Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Interconnect, C. Lan, D. N. Zakharov, R. G. Reifenberger

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

A focused ion beam (FIB) is used to sequentially reduce the contact length of an evaporated metal film to a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT). By using this FIB contact cutback technique, the contact resistance between an individual MWCNT and evaporated thin films of Au, Au/Ti, and Ag are accurately determined. The data permit a rational way to specify the minimum contact length of a metallic thin film to a MWCNT. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Top-gated, few-layer graphene field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated on thermally decomposed semi-insulating 4H-SiC substrates are demonstrated. Physical vapor deposited SiO2 is used as the gate dielectric. A two-dimensional hexagonal arrangement of carbon atoms with the correct lattice vectors, observed by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy, confirms the formation of multiple graphene layers on top of the SiC substrates. The observation of n-type and p-type transition further verifies Dirac Fermions' unique transport properties in graphene layers. The measured electron and hole mobilities on these fabricated graphene FETs are as high as 5400 and 4400 cm(2)/V s, respectively, which are much larger than the …

Mojave: Monitoring Of Jets In Agn With Vlba Experiments. Iv. The Parent Luminosity Function Of Radio-Loud Blazars, M. Cara, M. L. Lister

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We use a complete sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected on the basis of relativistically beamed 15 GHz radio flux density (MOJAVE: Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments) to derive the parent radio luminosity function (RLF) of bright radio-selected blazar cores. We use a maximum likelihood method to fit a beamed RLF to the observed data and thereby recover the parameters of the intrinsic (unbeamed) RLF. We analyze two sub-samples of the MOJAVE sample: the first contains only objects of known FR II class, with a total of 103 sources, and the second subsample adds 24 objects …

We present the first detailed abundance analysis of the metal-poor giant HKII 17435-00532. This star was observed as part of the University of Texas long-term project Chemical Abundances of Stars in the Halo ( CASH). A spectrum was obtained with the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope with a resolving power of R similar to 15,000. Our analysis reveals that this star may be located on the red giant branch, red horizontal branch, or early asymptotic giant branch. We find that this metal-poor (Fe/H = -2.2) star has an unusually high lithium abundance [log epsilon(Li) +2.1], mild carbon …

We present a detailed analysis of week-long simultaneous observations of the blazar Mrk 421 at 2-60 keV X-rays (RXTE) and TeV gamma-rays (Whipple and HEGRA) in 2001. Accompanying optical monitoring was performed with the Mt. Hopkins 48 inch telescope. The unprecedented quality of this data set enables us to establish the existence of the correlation between the TeV and X-ray luminosities, and also to start unveiling some of its characteristics, in particular its energy dependence and time variability. The source shows strong variations in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands, which are highly correlated. No evidence of an X-ray/gamma-ray interband lag …

In 1996 a major radio flux density outburst occurred in the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 111. It was followed by a particularly bright plasma ejection associated with a superluminal jet component, which has shaped the parsec-scale structure of 3C 111 for almost a decade. Here we present results from 18 epochs of Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations conducted since 1995 as part of the VLBA 2 cm Survey and MOJAVE monitoring programs. This major event allows us to study a variety of processes associated with outbursts of radio-loud AGNs in much greater detail than has been possible in other …

The multiwavelength observation of the nearby radio galaxy M87 provides a unique opportunity to study in detail processes occurring in active galactic nuclei from radio waves to TeV gamma-rays. Here we report the detection of gamma-ray emission above 250 GeV from M87 in spring 2007 with the VERITAS atmospheric Cerenkov telescope array and discuss its correlation with the X-ray emission. The gamma-ray emission is measured to be pointlike with an intrinsic source radius less than 4.5'. The differential energy spectrum is fitted well by a power-law function: d Phi/dE = (7.4 +/- 1.3(stat) +/- 1.5(sys))(E/TeV)((-2.31 +/- 0.17stat +/- 0.2sys)) 10(-9) …

A Coded-Feedback Construction Of Locally Minimum-Cost Multicast Network Codes, Chih-Chun Wang Jan 2008

A Coded-Feedback Construction Of Locally Minimum-Cost Multicast Network Codes, Chih-Chun Wang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

There are two common network models for network coded traffic: one is the fractional rate model (the primary model for non-coded communication) and the other is the integer rate model used for detailed coding analysis on packet-by-packet behaviors. The existing approach of finding minimum-cost multicast network codes is based on the fractional rate model and solves the corresponding linear-programming (LP) problem. The LP-based network optimization generally converges slowly due to the small step size and does not take care of the packet-by-packet coding behavior of network coding. This paper develops a minimum-cost multicast scheme based on the integer rate model. …

A 135mv 0.13w Process Tolerant 6t Subthreshold Dtmos Sram In 90nm Technology, Myeong-Enn Hwang, Kaushik Roy Jan 2008

A 135mv 0.13w Process Tolerant 6t Subthreshold Dtmos Sram In 90nm Technology, Myeong-Enn Hwang, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Cell stability and tolerance to process variation are of primary importance in subthreshold SRAMs. We propose a DTMOS based 6T SRAM suitable for subthreshold operation. For variation tolerant memory peripheral circuitry, we apply -ratio modulation technique. DTMOS SRAM array fabricated in 90nm technology operates down to 135mV consuming 0.13W at 750Hz. The proposed SRAM achieves 200% improvement in read static noise margin at iso-area compared to the conventional 6T SRAM at a supply voltage of 200mV.

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Off-State Stress In Drain Extended Pmos Transistors: Theory And Characterization Of Parametric Degradation And Dielectric Failure, D. Varghese, V. Reddy, H. Shichijo, D. Mosher, S. Krishnan, M. A. Alam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we provide the first systematic and comprehensive analysis of off-state degradation in Drain-Extended PMOS transistors - an enabling input/output (I/O) component in many systems and a prototypical example of devices with correlated degradation (i.e., hot carrier damage leading to gate dielectric failure). We use a wide range of characterization tools (e.g., Charge-pumping and multi-frequency charge pumping to probe damage generation, IDLIN measurement for parametric degradation, current-ratio technique to locate breakdown spot, etc.) along with broad range of computational models (e.g., process, device, Monte Carlo models for hot-carrier profiling, asymmetric percolation for failure statistics, etc.) to carefully and …

A Linear-Time Eigenvalue Solver For Finite-Element-Based Analysis Of Large-Scale Wave Propagation Problems In On-Chip Interconnect Structures, Lee Jongwon, V. Balakrishnan, Koh Cheng-Kok, Jiao Dan

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper the analysis and design of next-generation VLSI circuits using accurate electromagnetics-based models result in numerical problems of very large scale is presented. Typically, the solution of a problem with N parameters requires at least O(N) computation. With next generation VLSI circuits, however, even O(N) is prohibitively high since N is very large. The method that partially addresses this issue was developed for full-wave modeling of large-scale interconnect structures. In this method, a number of seeds (a seed has a unique cross section) are first recognized from an interconnect structure. In each seed, the original wave propagation problem …

A High Sensitivity Process Variation Sensor Utilizing Sub-Threshold Operation, Mesut Meterelliyoz, Peilin Song, Franco Stellari, Jaydeep P. Kulkarni, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a novel low-power, bias-free, high-sensitivity process variation sensor for monitoring random variations in the threshold voltage. The proposed sensor design utilizes the exponential current-voltage relationship of sub-threshold operation thereby improving the sensitivity by 2.3X compared to the above-threshold operation. A test-chip containing 128 PMOS and 128 NMOS devices has been fabricated in 65nm bulk CMOS process technology. A total of 28 dies across the wafer have been fully characterized to determine the random threshold voltage variations.

A Generic And Reconfigurable Test Paradigm Using Low-Cost Integrated Poly-Si Tfts, Jing Li, Swaroop Ghosh, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this work, we propose a novel low power, process tolerant, generic and reconfigurable test structure to reduce the test cost, improve diagnosability and verifiability of complex VLSI systems. The test structure contains a variety of configurable design-for-test units designed with low cost Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon Thin Film Transistors (LTPS TFTs) that are fabricated on a separate substrate (e.g., polymer, glass etc). The proposed test circuits do not consume any silicon area because they can be integrated on the chip using 3-D technology. This reconfigurable test paradigm eliminates the need to re-design the BIST components that may vary from …

A Fast Frequency-Domain Eigenvalue-Based Approach To Full-Wave Modeling Of Large-Scale Three-Dimensional On-Chip Interconnect Structures, Jiao Dan, Zhu Jianfang, S. Chakravarty Jan 2008

A Fast Frequency-Domain Eigenvalue-Based Approach To Full-Wave Modeling Of Large-Scale Three-Dimensional On-Chip Interconnect Structures, Jiao Dan, Zhu Jianfang, S. Chakravarty

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

As on-chip circuits have scaled into the deep submicron regime, electromagnetics-based analysis has increasingly become essential for high-performance integrated circuit (IC) design. Not only fast, but also high-capacity electromagnetic solutions are demanded to overcome the large problem size facing on-chip design community. In this paper, we present a novel, high-capacity, and fast approach to the full-wave modeling of 3-D on-chip interconnect structures. In this approach, the interconnect structure is decomposed into a number of seeds. In each seed, the original wave propagation problem is represented as a generalized eigenvalue problem. The resulting eigenvalue representation can comprehend both conductor and dielectric …

A Low-Cost Force Sensor For Electromechanical Actuation Systems, K. A. Rosenbaum, S. D. Pekarek, T. Baudendistel, B. Jordan

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, a new method to interface with a piezoelectric sensor for quasi-static force measurement is proposed. Using the so-called digital charge amplifier (DCA), the output signal from the sensor is sampled and integrated using digital techniques that include a drift compensation algorithm. The algorithm continually monitors the sensor output and estimates bias errors that will cause the output to drift. Analytical and simulation results are used to show that the DCA yields a sensor response that is free of drift and has a better low frequency response compared to drift-free analog techniques. Hardware results are used to validate …

A Novel Image Analysis Method Based On Bayesian Segmentation For Event-Related Functional Mri, Lejian Huang, Mary L. Comer, Thomas M. Talavage Jan 2008

A Novel Image Analysis Method Based On Bayesian Segmentation For Event-Related Functional Mri, Lejian Huang, Mary L. Comer, Thomas M. Talavage

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents the application of the expectation-maximization/ maximization of the posterior marginals (EM/MPM) algorithm to signal detection for functional MRI (fMRI). On basis of assumptions for fMRI 3-D image data, a novel analysis method is proposed and applied to synthetic data and human brain data. Synthetic data analysis is conducted using two statistical noise models (white and autoregressive of order 1) and, for low contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) data, reveals better sensitivity and specificity for the new method than for the traditional General Linear Model (GLM) approach. When applied to human brain data, functional activation regions are found to be …

A New Kalman-Filter-Based Framework For Fast And Accurate Visual Tracking Of Rigid Objects, Yoon Youngrock, A. Kosaka, A. C. Kak Jan 2008

A New Kalman-Filter-Based Framework For Fast And Accurate Visual Tracking Of Rigid Objects, Yoon Youngrock, A. Kosaka, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The best of Kalman-filter-based frameworks reported in the literature for rigid object tracking work well only if the object motions are smooth (which allows for tight uncertainty bounds to be used for where to look for the object features to be tracked). In this contribution, we present a new Kalman-filter-based framework that carries out fast and accurate rigid object tracking even when the object motions are large and jerky. The new framework has several novel features, the most significant of which is as follows: the traditional backtracking consists of undoing one-at-a-time the model-to-scene matchings as the pose-acceptance criterion is violated. …

Influence Of Phonon Scattering On The Performance Of P-I-Np-I-N Band-To-Band Tunneling Transistors, Siyuranga O. Koswatta, Mark S. Lundstrom, Dmitri E. Nikonov

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Power dissipation has become a major obstacle in performance scaling of modern integrated circuits and has spurred the search for devices operating at lower voltage swing. In this letter, we study p-i-n band-to-band tunneling field effect transistors taking semiconducting carbon nanotubes as the channel material. The on current of these devices is mainly limited by the tunneling barrier properties, and phonon-scattering has only a moderate effect. We show, however, that the off current is limited by phonon absorption assisted tunneling, and thus is strongly temperature dependent. Subthreshold swings below the 60 mV/decade conventional limit can be readily achieved even at room …

Inversion Capacitance-Voltage Studies On Gaas Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Structure Using Transparent Conducting Oxide As Metal Gate, T. Yang, Y. Liu, P. D. Ye, Y. Xuan, H. Pal, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 2008

Inversion Capacitance-Voltage Studies On Gaas Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Structure Using Transparent Conducting Oxide As Metal Gate, T. Yang, Y. Liu, P. D. Ye, Y. Xuan, H. Pal, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A systematic capacitance-voltage C-V study has been performed on GaAs metaloxide- semiconductor MOS structures with atomic-layer-deposited Al2O3 as gate dielectrics and indium tin oxide ITO as the metal gate. The transparent conducting ITO gate allows homogeneous photoillumination on the whole MOS capacitance area, such that one can easily observe the low-frequency LF C-V and quasistatic C-V of GaAs at room temperature. The semiconductor capacitance effect on GaAs MOS devices has also been identified and insightfully discussed based on the obtained LF C-V curves. The semiconductor capacitance effect becomes more important for devices with high-mobility channel materials and aggressively scaled high-k …

Infrared Micro-Particle Image Velocimetry Measurements And Predictions Of Flow Distribution In A Microchannel Heat Sink, Benjamin Jones, Poh-Seng Lee, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

The flow distribution in a silicon microchannel heat sink was studied using infrared micro-particle image velocimetry (IR lPIV). The microchannel test piece consisted of seventy-six 110 lm wide  371 lm deep channels etched into a silicon substrate. Inlet and outlet manifolds, also etched into the substrate, were fed by 1.4 mm inner-diameter tubing ports. An image-processing algorithm was developed that significantly improves the quality of IR lPIV recordings in low signal-to-noise ratio environments. A general expression for the PIV measurement depth is presented, which is valid for PIV images that have undergone a threshold image-processing operation. Experiments were performed …
