Novel Redox And Dna-Dependent Conformational Changes In Human Ku, A Dna-Double Strand Break Repair Protein, Jason Alexander Lehman
Novel Redox And Dna-Dependent Conformational Changes In Human Ku, A Dna-Double Strand Break Repair Protein, Jason Alexander Lehman
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Ionizing radiation (IR) and radiomimetic drugs used in cancer chemotherapy cause DNA double-strand breaks which are repaired by the nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) pathway. Ku is a heterodimeric protein comprised of 70 and 80 kDa subunits and recognizes free DNA ends. Once Ku is bound to DNA, it binds to the DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs), and forms a heterotrimeric DNA-PK complex for repair and damage signaling.
We have analyzed the Ku protein using multiple biochemical techniques and uncovered a novel reversible redox change (Andrews, Lehman and Turchi, (2006) JBC 281(19):13596-603). From this data, we hypothesized that a redox-dependent …

A 2GHz carrier recovery Costas Loop based BPSK detector is designed using CMOS 0.18μm technology. The designed BPSK detector consists of single to differential conversion circuit, phase/frequency detector, Voltage Controlled Oscillator, differential to single conversion circuit, first order loop filter and a third multiplier. Different architectures available for each block have been discussed along with the design methodology adopted. The schematics were simulated in analog design environment.
The Costas loop presented in this work can sense both 0° and 180° phases at its input. Thus the Costas loop carrier recovery circuit overcomes the 180° phase ambiguity presented by the conventional …

Intestinal microflora refers to all the different species of bacteria that reside in the human gut and is an important organ of the human body because almost all the digestive reactions of the host occur in the intestine. The bacteria of the intestine play a key role in this process by supplementing the intestine with various enzymes and proteins that are required for the digestive process. At the same time, these bacteria were shown to be implicated in a variety of gastrointestinal disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disorder and Gastrointestinal Cancer, but with the current knowledge about the …

Performance Analysis Of Quantitative Bone Measurement With Spiral, Multi-Detector Ct Scanners, Shruti Gupta
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The measure of bone strength and fracture risk assessment is based primarily on bone mineral density (BMD). Computed tomography (CT), a frequently used radiographic technique that provides cross-sectional images, can be used for BMD quantification. Called quantitative computed tomography (QCT), it determines true volumetric density and also differentiates between trabecular and cortical bone. As a result, QCT improves the ability to detect early changes in trabecular BMD accurately and precisely.
The introduction of helical CT for quantitative analysis introduces new complexities. Even though using multi-detector helical CT for BMD assessment is being suggested, a detailed analysis of its validity is …
Analysis And Interpretation Of 2d Seismic Data Over The Ancona Gas Storage Facility, Illinois, Using Petrel Visualization Software, Nilanjan Roy
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Intriguing features of the North American mid-continent are the widespread and prominent subhorizontal seismic reflectors that are thought to be associated with thick sequences of layered rocks beneath the Phanerozoic cover of the Illinois Basin. The present investigation was an effort to identify and interpret new structural features of the pre-Paleozoic crust at the Ancona Gas Storage field in north-central Illinois. A grid of existing seismic data was reprocessed using the technique of extended correlation.
The reprocessed data was then analyzed using Schlumberger's Petrel visualization software for seismic interpretation and reconstruction of the 2D and 3D crustal geometry. The reprocessing …
Cross-Section Of Option Returns And Volatility, Amit Goyal, Alessio Saretto
Cross-Section Of Option Returns And Volatility, Amit Goyal, Alessio Saretto
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
We study the cross-section of stock option return by constructing decile portfolios of straddles and delta-hedged calls and puts based on sorting stocks on the difference between historical realized volatility and at-the-money implied volatility. We find that a zero-cost trading strategy that is long (short) in the portfolio with a large positive (negative) difference between these two volatility measures produces an economically and statistically significant average monthly return. The results are robust to different market conditions, to stock risks-characteristics, to various industry groupings, to option liquidity characteristics, and are not explained by usual risk factor models.

Different Histories But Similar Genetic Diversity And Structure For Black Walnut In Indiana And Missouri, Erin R. Victory, Jeffrey C. Glaubitz, Jennifer A. Fike, Olin E. Rhodes Jr., Keith E. Woeste
Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications
—Missouri and Indiana have markedly different histories of glaciation and recolonization by forest trees. These states also differ in land use patterns and degree of anthropogenic landscape change such as forest fragmentation. To determine the overall effects of these and other demographic differences on the levels of genetic diversity and structure in black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) more than 550 total black walnut trees from nine populations in Indiana and 10 in Missouri were sampled and analyzed using 12 nuclear microsatellite loci. Although genetic diversity parameters such as allelic richness and expected heterozygosity were high overall, they varied little among …

Tutoring Is Real: The Benefits Of The Peer Tutor Experience For Future English Educators, Janet Alsup, Tammy S. Conard-Salvo, Scott J. Peters
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Publications
In this article, an English education professor, a university writing center administrator, and a recent graduate of an undergraduate English education program discuss the role peer tutoring might play in enhancing the education of preservice teachers of writing. The authors argue that by providing additional, authentic field experiences which reflect constructivist, student-centered philosophies often adhered to in English education programs, university peer tutoring can provide undergraduate students with authentic experience in learning collaboratively, developing rapport with students, and conducting student-centered, one-to-one writing conferences.

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations
This presentation from the 2008 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) offers results from an a study of text-to-speech software in a writing center and explores the effect that writing centers and tutors have on students’ use of and attitudes toward technology and writing. Initial results confirm our hypothesis that Kurzweil’s text-to-speech features provides considerable benefit to students, and that students identified additional errors during the revision and editing stages of writing than during revision done independently.

High-Order Discontinuous Galerkin Method For Boltzmann Model Equations, Alina A. Alexeenko, Cyril Galitzine, Alexander M. Alekseenko
School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications
High-order Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is applied to the kinetic model equations describing rarefied gas flows. A conservative DG discretization of nonlinear collision relaxation term is formulated for Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook and ellipsoidal statistical models. The numerical solutions using RKDG method of order up to four are obtained for two flow problems: the heat transfer between parallel plates and the normal shock wave. The convergence of RKDG method is compared with the conventional secondorder finite volume method for the heat transfer problem. The normal shock wave solutions obtained using RKDG are compared with the experimental measurements of density and velocity distribution …
Nesting Forward-Mode Ad In A Functional Framework, Jeffrey M. Siskind, Barak A. Pearlmutter
Nesting Forward-Mode Ad In A Functional Framework, Jeffrey M. Siskind, Barak A. Pearlmutter
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We discuss the augmentation of a functional-programming language with a derivative- taking operator implemented with forward-mode automatic differentiation (AD). The primary technical difficulty in doing so lies in ensuring correctness in the face of nested invocation of that operator, due to the need to distinguish perturbations introduced by distinct invocations. We exhibit a series of implementations of a referentially- transparent forward-mode-AD derivative-taking operator, each of which uses a different non-referentially-transparent mechanism to distinguish perturbations. Even though the forward-mode-AD derivative-taking operator is itself referentially transparent, we hypothesize that one cannot correctly formulate this operator as a function definition in current pure …
3d Modeling Of Optically Challenging Objects, J. Park, A. C. Kak
3d Modeling Of Optically Challenging Objects, J. Park, A. C. Kak
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We present a system for constructing 3D models of real-world objects with optically challenging surfaces. The system utilizes a new range imaging concept called multipeak range imaging, which stores multiple candidates of range measurements for each point on the object surface. The multiple measurements include the erroneous range data caused by various surface properties that are not ideal for structured-light range sensing. False measurements generated by spurious reflections are eliminated by applying a series of constraint tests. The constraint tests based on local surface and local sensor visibility are applied first to individual range images. The constraint tests based on …

A Novel Evidence Accumulation Framework For Robust Multi-Camera Person Detection, Hidekazu Iwaki, Gaurav Srivastava, Akio Kosaka, Johnny Park, Avinash Kak
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We propose a novel evidence accumulation framework that accurately estimates the positions of humans in a 3D environment. The framework consists of a network of distributed agents having different functionalities. The modular structure of the network allows scalability to large surveillance areas and robust operation. The framework does not assume reliable measurements in single cameras (referred to as 'sensing agents' in our framework) or reliable communication between different agents. There is a position uncertainty associated with single camera measurements and it is reduced through an uncertainty reducing transform that performs evidence accumulation using multiple camera measurements. Our framework has the …

A Novel Low Overhead Fault Tolerant Kogge-Stone Adder Using Adaptive Clocking, Swaroop Ghosh, Patrick Ndai, Kaushik Roy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
As the feature size of transistors gets smaller, fabricating them becomes challenging. Manufacturing process follows various corrective design-for-manufacturing (DFM) steps to avoid shorts/opens/bridges. However, it is not possible to completely eliminate the possibility of such defects. If spare units are not present to replace the defective parts, then such failures cause yield loss. In this paper, we present a fault tolerant technique to leverage the redundancy present in high speed regular circuits such as Kogge-Stone adder (KSA). Due to its regularity and speed, KSA is widely used in ALU design. In KSA, the carries are computed fast by computing them …
A Low-Power Sram Using Bit-Line Charge-Recycling, Keejong Kim, Hamid Mahmoodi, Kaushik Roy
A Low-Power Sram Using Bit-Line Charge-Recycling, Keejong Kim, Hamid Mahmoodi, Kaushik Roy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Low-power SRAM design is crucial since it takes a large fraction of total power and die area in high-performance processors. Reducing voltage swing of the bit-line is an effective way to save the power dissipation in write cycles. Voltage swing reduction of bit-lines is, however, limited due to possible write-failures. We propose a new low-power SRAM using bit-line Charge Recycling (CR-SRAM) for the write operation. In the proposed write scheme, differential voltage swing of a bit-line is obtained by recycled charge from its adjacent bit-line capacitance, instead of the power line. Applying such a charge recycling technique to the bit-line …

LS I +61 303 is one of only a few high-mass X-ray binaries currently detected at high significance in very high energy gamma-rays. The system was observed over several orbital cycles ( between 2006 September and 2007 February) with the VERITAS array of imaging air Cerenkov telescopes. A signal of gamma-rays with energies above 300 GeV is found with a statistical significance of 8.4 standard deviations. The detected flux is measured to be strongly variable; the maximum flux is found during most orbital cycles at apastron. The energy spectrum for the period of maximum emission can be characterized by a …

We present observations of the dwarf galaxies Draco and Ursa Minor, the Local Group galaxies M32 and M33, and the globular cluster M15 conducted with the Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope to search for the gamma-ray signature of self-annihilating weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which may constitute astrophysical dark matter (DM). We review the motivations for selecting these sources based on their unique astrophysical environments and report the results of the data analysis that produced upper limits on the excess rate of gamma rays for each source. We consider models for the DM distribution in each source based on the …
A Bioarchaeological Perspective On Egyptian Colonialism In Nubia During The New Kingdom, Michele Buzon
A Bioarchaeological Perspective On Egyptian Colonialism In Nubia During The New Kingdom, Michele Buzon
Department of Anthropology Faculty Publications
During the New Kingdom, Egypt began a military campaign to regain command over Nubia. Extremely successful, their control extended to the fourth cataract by the time of Thutmose III. The circumstances of this power, however, are not well known. It is unclear whether Egyptian colonists or locals administered Nubia during this time. Using a bioarchaeological approach via the study of human skeletal remains and archaeological data from the New Kingdom site of Tombos in Nubia and comparative Egyptian and Nubian skeletal samples, this paper addresses these long-standing questions. Analysesuggest that the Tombos individuals were an ethnically and biologically mixed group. …

Data collected in run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for indications of new electroweak scale physics. Rather than focusing on particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for discrepancies with respect to the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (VISTA) considers the gross features of the data and is sensitive to new large cross section physics. A quasi-model-independent approach (SLEUTH) searches for a significant excess of events with large summed transverse momentum and is particularly sensitive to new electroweak scale physics that appears predominantly in one final state. This global search for new physics in over 300 …

We report a new STAR measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A(LL) for inclusive jet production at midrapidity in polarized p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 200 GeV. The data, which cover jet transverse momenta 5 < p(T) < 30 GeV/c, are substantially more precise than previous measurements. They provide significant new constraints on the gluon spin contribution to the nucleon spin through the comparison to predictions derived from one global fit to polarized deep-inelastic scattering measurements. This study explores taxicab drivers’ acts of “revenge” and “rescue,” some of which are expressive acts, while others are more instrumental. This article builds on earlier theories of workplace deviance, demonstrating how deviance can serve different purposes and expanding the concept of “deviance admiration” (Heckert and Heckert 2004). It examines deviance in a circumstance – the taxicab industry – which introduces a tension between mandated conformity and necessary deviance: employees must conform to the employers’ rules and yet, to accomplish their jobs well, they need to abandon those rules occasionally. In addition to its theoretical contributions, this work has important …
