The Role Of Automatic Speech Recognition Live Captions In Synchronous In-Person Learning Environments: A Study On Accuracy Rate, Krista M. Rey
The Role Of Automatic Speech Recognition Live Captions In Synchronous In-Person Learning Environments: A Study On Accuracy Rate, Krista M. Rey
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the accuracy rate of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) live captions in an in-person synchronous classroom setting and the perceptions of participants experiencing them. The reduction in the workforce of Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) captioners, improvements in ASR, and previous studies suggesting benefits for all learners have left educators, institutions, and policymakers wondering if ASR live captions can ethically meet accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and also benefit typically hearing and English Language Learners (ELL). Two general undergraduate education classes were selected to evaluate the accuracy rate of …

Guidelines For Standard Basic Notations In Applied Statistics, Abhaya Indrayan, Shivani Saini Ms
COBRA Preprint Series
Whereas some statistical notations are standard and uniformly used by different workers, many are not. Varying notations lead to confusion among the readers, particularly those engaged with applied statistics material, such as medical professionals. This communication proposes that all basic notations be standardized so that the same notations are consistently used by different authors, in different books, journals, and articles for the benefit of those who are not rigorously trained statisticians. Guidelines for such standard notations are also provided. The lead must be taken by statisticians.

Journal Articles: Epidemiology
INTRODUCTION: To develop interventions to reduce neighborhood-level disparities in pediatric cancer outcomes, it is necessary to understand their underlying mechanisms. It has been suggested that individual-level health insurance is a mediator of neighborhood deprivation and pediatric cancer survival.
METHODS: This study was a population-based longitudinal study of children with cancer from 2000 to 2020 in the Iowa Cancer Registry and Louisiana Tumor Registry. Neighborhood deprivation was measured using the Area Deprivation Index. Log-binomial regression models were used to identify predictors of health insurance status at diagnosis. Cox regression models were used to assess the association between health insurance status at …

Winning Project: An Analysis Of Childhood Trauma And The Effects On Brain Development, Victoria L. Hober
2026 Lynn Haggard Undergraduate Library Research Award
The brain is a very perceptive, absorbent part of the human body, and childhood is an important time for growth. In childhood, the brain is constantly watching and evaluating every situation to improve itself and its functioning. The time when the brain is most plastic is referred to as the sensitive period, and when this period has passed, the brain becomes much more difficult to change (Downar & Eagleman, 2023). How an adult responds and reacts to the child is instilling key components in the brain that will later affect the child’s emotional and physical wellbeing. Childhood trauma, including physical/emotional …
An Analysis Of Gustav Mahler’S Use Of The Timpani With Reference To Historical Performance Practice And Contemporary Performances Of His Works., Stephen Kelly
Research Theses
Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) held important positions in Europe and America in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century as a conductor of operatic and symphonic repertoire. As a composer, his output spans a significant transitional period in classical music, from Romanticism to early Modernism. His life and work represents a revolutionary period of change in many developmental aspects of the modern orchestra. Changing social norms, larger concert halls, and technical developments in instrument-making all combined to alter the presentation and, as a consequence, the reception of classical music during this time. As conductor of some of the finest orchestras …

The Weaponization Of Religion, Culture, And Politics During The Troubles In Northern Ireland, Erika Holmberg
Undergraduate Symposium
From 1968-1998, Northern Ireland experienced a wave of sectarian violence known as The Troubles. During this period, the fighting between Republican and Loyalist paramilitary groups caused countless civilian casualties, economic hardship, and social turmoil. This presentation will explore how each side justified their violent actions through promotion of cultural ideals, religious division, and political manipulation. Both sides of the conflict gained and lost public support based on how they presented each of these issues, and to this day, historians are uncovering their impact.

A Novel Lightweight Framework For Low-Light Image Enhancement Via Gaussian Denoising And Clahe, Daniel Oluwaseun Adesoji
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Low-light image enhancement is a major challenge in digital imaging, especially in medical imaging, surveillance, and autonomous vision systems. Images captured under poor illumination often appear dark, noisy, and low in contrast, which makes it hard to observe important details. Traditional enhancement methods can improve brightness but usually introduce artifacts or increase noise. Although deep learning methods have shown strong performance, they usually require large datasets, and high computational resources. This creates a need for simpler and more efficient enhancement techniques. This study proposes a lightweight framework that incorporates Gaussian denoising with Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) to enhance …

What will be the fate of the independent agencies? Since 1887, Congress has seen fit to address an array of contemporary issues by creating expert federal agencies, such as the Interstate Commerce Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, the National Labor Relations Board, and others. The principal officers of these agencies are appointed by the President on advice and consent of the Senate, serve limited staggered terms, are bipartisan in the sense that only a bare majority of the agency’s officers can be members of the same political party, and are “independent” in the sense that the officers are removable only …

Modern Psychological Studies
The Switching Stroop (SS) task is a modification of the neuropsychological assessment, the Color Word Interference (CWI) task, which measures inhibition of pre-potent response. Both tests measure the ability to select and match appropriate responses to a cued dimension (instruction) of a stimulus. However, the SS additionally incorporates the ability to adapt to consecutive conflicting stimuli (the construct of dynamic adjustments of control). By integrating with existing commercial software for administering remote neuropsychological tests, we were able to digitize a previously published version of the SS, enhancing user friendliness and functionality. This electronic version of the SS provides a plethora …

Background: Each year, thousands of people experience one or more episodes of falling, that lead to a lasting impact in function and participation in daily life. Education regarding fall prevention is often focused mainly on the older adult population, but falls can happen at any age. Fear of falling and pain-related fear exists among adults at any age. The focus of this research study was to determine if participation in an aquatic exercise program that focused on balance, core body strength, and cardiopulmonary endurance could be utilized to alleviate the fear of falling and improve performance. Methods: Eight participants completed …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2026
The goal for this study was to find how TikTok uses rhetoric to argue about effective workout routines for males versus females and what values or ideologies does this rhetoric help to promote. People tend to take health and fitness advice from social media although it is not the most creditable place. Understanding how people on TikTok use rhetoric to argue about effective workouts for males versus females and what values and ideologies this rhetoric helps to promote is a gap, although it affects a significant amount of people in today's society.
To discover how rhetoric is used in this …

The Structural Law Of Data, Bridget A. Fahey, Raul Castro Fernandez
University of Chicago Law Review
The central concern of structural constitutional law is the organization of governmental power, but power comes in many forms. This Article is about how the law of structure regulates decision-making about, and popular control over, an increasingly potent form of power: the power government obtains from data. The government has always relied on information to meet its objectives, but the digitization of information over the last half century has yielded a distinctive form of governmental power—one that is liquid, transferable, minable, dynamic, and vital to virtually all governmental activity today.
But despite the significant literature on private-sector “data governance,” public …

Evaluation And Impact Of 4th Grade Writing Instruction And Intervention, Sasha R. Smith
Education Theses and Dissertations
The implementation of Texas's redesigned State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) introduced extended constructed response (ECR) items that required students to demonstrate reading comprehension through written responses. At the study site, fourth-grade students consistently demonstrated stronger reading comprehension than writing performance, revealing a gap in their ability to communicate understanding using evidence-based written responses. The purpose of this Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice was to evaluate the implementation and impact of a systems-based instructional intervention designed to improve fourth-grade students' performance on constructed response writing tasks through increased instructional coherence and explicit writing instruction. This embedded mixed-methods case …

Till Death Does Us Part: An Analysis Of Influences And Ideas Behind The Exhibition, Milo F. Rippe
Honors College Theses
“Till Death Does Us Part,” is a ceramic work created by Milo Rippe in the fall of 2025. The installation includes fifteen faceless figures, ten organ-inspired plates, and one big central figure. Also featured are three homemade stains and two homemade glazes. The figures are hand-built from slabs, combined to form a single piece. The plates were also cut from slabs, and then hand-rolled rims were added to each shape with slip. Stains and glazes are made by methodically measuring out each ingredient on a triple-beam scale, combining all ingredients with water, and running the mixture through a strainer to …
