Effects Of Volatile Organic Compounds Produced By Temperature-Adapted Microbes On Duckweed Growth, Phaedra Yael Stemp
Effects Of Volatile Organic Compounds Produced By Temperature-Adapted Microbes On Duckweed Growth, Phaedra Yael Stemp
Honors Theses and Capstones
As host-associated microbes adapt to their abiotic environment, these adaptations can affect their host species as well. Previous research showed that varying temperatures and volatile organic compound (VOC) production can affect microbial benefits to hosts. This experiment analyzed how 27 microbes pre-adapted to different temperature conditions affected growth of their host, common duckweed plants, comparing effects of direct contact with microbes, effects of microbe VOCs alone, or both. Each microbe was pre-adapted to one of three temperature regimes: “Northern” at 28 °C, “Southern” at 33 °C, and “Extreme” at 36 °C. We then grew duckweeds in I-plates with each microbe …

Does Volunteering Give An Extra Health Boost? Volunteering And Hypertension Risk Among Insured And Uninsured U.S. Adults In Late Midlife, Byeongju Ryu, Seoyoun Kim, Koichiro Shiba, Cal J. Halvorsen
Brown School Faculty Publications
Introduction: Hypertension is a major predictor of cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death in the U.S. Growing evidence suggests that formal volunteering in later life may reduce hypertension risk; however, it remains unclear whether these benefits extend to adults in late midlife and whether they differ by health insurance status.
Methods: This prospective cohort study analyzed data from the 2012–2018 Health and Retirement Study. The analytic sample included 4,169 respondents between the ages of 50 and 64. Because blood pressure was measured in half the sample in alternating waves, data were pooled across waves. To address selection into volunteering, …

Fully Differential Studies On Dissociative Capture In P + D2 Collisions And On Ionization In P + He Collisions, Shruti Majumdar
Doctoral Dissertations
Advancing our understanding of few-body dynamics in simple atomic systems is a fundamental objective in atomic scattering research. The underlying problem is that the Schrödinger equation is not analytically solvable for more than two mutually interacting particles. This involves a comprehensive exploration of various channels, such as ionization, capture, and excitation. A common theoretical approach to describe ion-atom collisions is based on perturbation theory, where the scattering amplitude is expanded in powers of the interaction potential. Here, understanding the few-body problem means accurately describing the relative importance of the higher- vs the first order terms.
In the case of ionization, …

Flexible Membrane Electrodes For Use In High-Capacity Lithium-Ion Batteries, David A. Denemark
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Wearable electronic devices require high-capacity flexible batteries to improve user comfort and increase usage time per charge. In this thesis, flexible lithium-ion battery (LIB) electrodes are prepared using a novel and scalable phase inversion method, embedding one-dimensional SnO₂ nanowires and double-walled carbon nanotubes within a porous polyacrylonitrile asymmetric membrane. The optimized electrode delivered an initial specific discharge capacity of 915.93 mAh g⁻¹, approximately 2.5 times greater than conventional graphite anodes, with 61.99% capacity retention after 45 cycles. The incorporation of a carbon mesh substrate further enhanced both electrochemical and mechanical performance, achieving 89.46% capacity retention after 45 cycles and a …

A pure general relativity (quantum or classical) is one lacking in matter. Such a field has a Lorentzian space time geometry. A renormalization perturbative expansion, truncated to all finite orders, establishes both the quantum and the general relativity theory with full mathematical rigor.
The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm
The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm
Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Two pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.
The construction is based on the axial gauge, ghost states, the BRST framework and Gribov extension of the Hamiltonian, with a loop expansion cutoff to all finite orders for the dynamics.
The construction is established by renormalized perturbation theory to all finite orders.
The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production
Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Euler Limits, James Glimm
Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Euler Limits, James Glimm
Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
The existence of a weak solution of the incompressible isothermal Navier-Stokes equation with given initial conditions in the Sobolev space $\mathcal{H}_{-2}$ for energy fluctuations and in $\mathcal{H}_{-3}$ for enstrophy fluctuations is assumed. The existence is uniform with respect to the Euler limit of zero viscosity $\nu$. Thus, existence of weak solutions of the Euler equation with given initial conditions is established, and these Euler solutions are the zero viscosity limit of Navier-Stokes solutions, provided the Navier-Stokes solutions exist.

This study examines the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use and land cover (LULC) changes and their influence on local climate variability in Bhutan using an integrated geospatial and machine learning framework. LULC changes during the period 2004 to 2022 were analyzed to understand their relationship with localized climate responses. Despite increasing urbanization pressures, comprehensive assessments linking LULC dynamics with climate variability in Bhutan remain limited. Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and Random Forest classification were used to map LULC changes, while non-parametric trend analyses (Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimator) were applied to evaluate trends in key meteorological variables, including …

A Mold Mating Surface Temperature Monitoring System For Injection Molding Using Infrared Thermography And Mahalanobis Distance, Yoshio Fukushima, Makoto Fukushima, Sho Shibuya, Keigo Kudo, Yuta Abe
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
In plastic injection molding, minimizing defects is crucial for sustainable and stable manufacturing because resin behavior and molding conditions fluctuate due to variations in material lots, seasonal shifts, and factory environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Among various process parameters, mold temperature - specifically the mold mating surface temperature immediately after part ejection- plays a critical role in mitigating these variations and maintaining consistent product quality. However, embedding conventional sensors into the mating surface is structurally difficult. While non-contact infrared thermography is an effective alternative, shiny metallic mold surfaces suffer from low emissivity, leading to inaccurate readings. Furthermore, high-end …

Improving Evacuation Effectiveness On Cruise And Large Passenger Ships : An Analysis Of Human Factors, Safety Culture, And Behavioral Dynamics, Antonios Andreadakis
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
Maritime trade has long constituted a central pillar of economic development, supporting global commerce and cultural exchange. Nevertheless, the maritime environment is inherently hazardous and therefore the protection of human life has consistently constituted and will continue to remain a central priority (Casson, 1995). An instrumental turning point in maritime safety occurred after the sinking of Titanic in 1912, which prompted in 1914 an International Conference dedicated to the protection of human life at sea; which ultimately led to the adoption of the International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) (Dalaklis, 2017). This Convention introduced internationally imposed safety …
Neuroevolution Of Compact Search Heuristics In Sokoban, Yeonghun Lee
Neuroevolution Of Compact Search Heuristics In Sokoban, Yeonghun Lee
Computer Science Honors Papers
This thesis investigates whether neuroevolution can produce heuristic functions for A* search on Sokoban that are drastically more parameter-efficient than a conventional gradient-trained baseline. Sokoban is a combinatorial planning puzzle that is both NPhard and PSPACE-complete, and solving it at scale requires an accurate cost-to-go heuristic to guide search. The standard approach fixes a neural network architecture and trains it by gradient descent; this thesis investigates whether evolutionary search over network topology can find heuristics that are competitive in accuracy while using orders of magnitude fewer parameters.
Four heuristic approaches are implemented and compared on the medium-difficulty split of the …

Dammed If You Do: Should The Government Be Liable For Hurricane Flooding And Other Natural Disasters?, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
When hurricanes, wildfires, and other natural disasters strike, government officials must make difficult decisions under time pressure and amidst uncertainty over how best to save lives and mitigate the resulting damage to private property. Sometimes landowners who do not second-guess the appropriateness of those decisions made in exigent circumstances nonetheless insist that the government should foot the bill for the resulting destruction. In a 2025 opinion (Ablan) and a 2022 decision (Milton), both involving flooding damage resulting from Hurricane Harvey, the Federal Circuit articulated an expansive vision of government liability under the Takings Clause that can be squared with neither …
The Effects Of Tax Evasion On Inequality, David A. Weisbach, Thomas Coleman
The Effects Of Tax Evasion On Inequality, David A. Weisbach, Thomas Coleman
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
To estimate inequality from tax data, researchers must allocate misreported income (e.g., evasion) to individuals. Misreported income, however, is not directly observed. Recovering true income therefore requires identifying assumptions about the joint distribution of true income and reporting, and these assumptions can substantially change estimated top income shares. A central reason is that membership in the reported top group is selected on compliance, an unobservable, so the composition of the reported top depends on assumptions the data alone cannot settle. We develop a computational framework that makes these assumptions explicit and clarifies how they shape estimates of inequality. We show that …
