Jagannath's Saligram: On Bruno Latour And Literary Critique After Postcoloniality, Amit Ray, Evan Selinger
Jagannath's Saligram: On Bruno Latour And Literary Critique After Postcoloniality, Amit Ray, Evan Selinger
Articles
Bruno Latour has turned to Indian vernacular fiction to illustrate the limits of ideology critique. In examining the method of literary analysis that underlies his appropriation of postcolonial history and culture, we appeal to Edward Said's notion of "traveling theory" in order to discuss critically the aesthetic as well as political stakes of using the technology of the modern novel for the allegorical purposes that Latour has in mind. We argue that Latourian analysis fails to uphold its own rigorous aspirations when it reduces complex literary and cultural representation to universal allegory.
Reviewing The Author-Function In The Age Of Wikipedia, Amit Ray, Erhardt Graeff
Reviewing The Author-Function In The Age Of Wikipedia, Amit Ray, Erhardt Graeff
Articles
In "Reviewing the Author-Function in the Age of Wikipedia," Amit Ray and Erhardt Graeff examine how wiki technology challenges traditional concepts of authorship and authority in knowledge production. The authors build on poststructuralist theory, particularly Roland Barthes's "Death of the Author" and Michel Foucault's concept of the "author-function," to analyze how wikis destabilize individual authorship in favor of collaborative, community-driven content creation.
The essay argues that wikis represent a fundamental shift from the Romantic notion of the solitary author-genius to what they term the "wiki writing process"—a dynamic system where traditional roles of reader, writer, and editor blur into a …

Community-University Partnerships: Achieving Continuity In The Face Of Change, Linda Silka, Robert Forrant, Brenda Bond, Patricia Coffey, Robin Toof, Dan Toomey, David Turcotte, Cheryl West
Partnerships/Community
A challenge most community-university partnerships will face after having established themselves is how to maintain continuity in the face of change. The problems besetting communities continually shift as new issues bubble up. Similarly, the goals of the university partners often fluctuate. And the partners themselves shift: people working in non-government organizations often move in and out of positions and university partners may change with tenure or shifts in university priorities. In light of all of this flux, can stable community-university partnerships be built and, if so, how?

What Is This "Lobbying" That We Are So Worried About?, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer
What Is This "Lobbying" That We Are So Worried About?, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer
Journal Articles
Lobbying is both an essential part of our democratic process and a source of some of our greatest fears about dangers to that process. Yet when Congress, the public, and scholars consider loosening or, as is more often the case, tightening the restrictions on lobbying, they usually assume that everyone knows what activities are in fact lobbying. They therefore overlook the fact that multiple definitions of lobbying currently exist in the various federal laws addressing lobbying. This Article seeks to fill this gap by answering the question of how lobbying should be defined for purposes of the existing federal laws …

The Memory Gap In Surveillance Law, Patricia L. Bellia
The Memory Gap In Surveillance Law, Patricia L. Bellia
Journal Articles
U.S. information privacy laws contain a memory gap: they regulate the collection and disclosure of certain kinds of information, but they say little about its retention. This memory gap has ever-increasing significance for the structure of government surveillance law. Under current doctrine, the Fourth Amendment generally requires government agents to meet high standards before directly and prospectively gathering a target's communications. The law takes a dramatically different approach to indirect, surveillance-like activities, such as the compelled production of communications from a third party, even when those activities yield the same information as, or more information than, direct surveillance activities. Because …
Psychosocial Adjustment Of International Students At A Midwestern Illinois University, Shilpa Maheshwari
Psychosocial Adjustment Of International Students At A Midwestern Illinois University, Shilpa Maheshwari
Masters Theses
The study assessed the psychosocial adjustment of international students in higher education in the United States (U.S.) and examined their overall experiences since their arrival in the country. Pa1iicipants completed the 54-item Inventory for Student Adjustment Strain. The adjustment variables which were examined in the inventory were culture shock, language fluency, academic difficulties, social support, loneliness, and assertiveness. The hypothesis of the study was that the variables of age, gender, and length of time in the U.S. would predict the psychosocial adjustment of the sample of international students after their arrival to an unfamiliar country. A total of 167 international …
A Qualitatively Grounded Curriculum For Western International Student Orientation To Chinese Higher Education, Lin Yi
Masters Theses
More and more U.S. students are seeking university study abroad in China. Information about how to prepare for overseas study in China, and what challenges need to be overcome, is limited. To develop the proposed orientation curriculum, Chinese professors teaching international students, international student affairs professionals serving international students, English-speaking international students studying in Chinese universities, and U.S. citizens visiting and working in China contributed their insights and experiences of culture shock, culture surprises, and cultural differences. The themes emerging from the interviews were organized into the content of the proposed orientation curriculum. When U.S. international students experience this Chinese …

Graduate Recruitment At A Midsized Midwestern University, Sharese N. Shannon
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to dialogue with several graduate programs at Eastern Illinois University to better examine their admissions requirements and philosophy on recruitment. Graduate recruitment at a midsized public institution, such as Eastern lllinois University, has strengths and weakness in regards to attracting students. Location, class size, reputation and preparing students for doctoral programs were reported as factors associated with attracting perspective graduate students. Many graduate programs did not actively recruit students because of heavy reliance on representatives from the graduate school.
The researcher discovered how departments defined their responsibility towards recruitment, how they defined a recruitment …
A Study Of An Online Adaptation Of An Off Campus Adult Student Survey, Benjamin J. Stenson
A Study Of An Online Adaptation Of An Off Campus Adult Student Survey, Benjamin J. Stenson
Masters Theses
The School of Continuing Education (SCE) at Eastern Illinois University offers evening and weekend courses for returning adult students at a variety of off campus locations. Program assessment conducted in 1988, 1993, 1997, and 2002 used an off campus adult student survey administered by traditional means. Since these program assessment administrations, the proportion of classes offered through traditional off campus classroom instruction has lowered in relation to classes that are technology delivered.
It has become important to assess technology delivered instructional programs as well. The original adult student survey (Schrock, 1988) was adapted into an on-line version in order to …

Career Vs. Marriage: Perceptions Of Professional Black Women Employed In Higher Education, Temetria D. Hargett
Masters Theses
Age of first marriage for American women has been on the rise and Black women possessing higher education seem to top the charts of this growing trend. The review of recent literature articulates an increase in marriage ages for Black women that seem to correspond to educational attainment. Through interviewing, the researcher found that the issue of career/marriage balance for professional Black women employed in higher education was relevant; findings from the present study specified obstacles to balancing career and fostering relationships that may end in marriage. An analysis of barriers to marriage for six professional Black women employed in …
The Narrowing Of Knowing: What It Means To Be Literate And Learned In Today's Society, Thomas Smith
The Narrowing Of Knowing: What It Means To Be Literate And Learned In Today's Society, Thomas Smith
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
Currently, the idea and definition of learning and literacy is being pushed and pulled in competing directions. Current governmental policies, most notably embodied in the No Child Left Behind law, are pushing the definitions to mechanical enterprises aimed at the lowest common denominator. At the same time, the technology race is working to open access to being learned and literate to populations that are traditionally underrepresented in these arenas; however, at the same time, this technology is setting up new barriers that act to limit access. Finally, the student population of schools in the United States is quickly becoming the …

Hiv, Hepatitis B And Hepatitis C Coinfection In Kenya, Reena Shah, Jane Karuru, Mark Nelson, Justin Stebbing
Internal Medicine, East Africa
There are few data regarding hepatitis and HIV coinfection in Africa. In 378 HIV seropositive individuals in Nairobi, 23 (6%) were hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV coinfected, four (1%) were hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV coinfected and one patient was infected with all three viruses. Coinfected individuals were more likely to be men and older; a lack of HBV vaccination was a risk factor for HIV/HBV coinfection (PU0.001) and tenofovir containing regimens appeared most effective at reducing HBV viral load.

First Record Of Ceratapsis Monstrosa, A Larval Oceanic Penaeoid Crustacean, From The Gulf Of Mexico, James S. Franks, Adrienne Russell Flowers
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The genus Cerataspis (Gray, 1838) (Crustacea, Decapoda), assigned to the Penaeoidea by Burkenroad (1936) and Heegaard (1966), has circumglobal distribution between 40ºN and 40ºS (Morgan et al. 1985) and is represented in the Atlantic Ocean by two rarely collected species, C. monstrosa and C. petiti. Descriptions of both species are based on the larval forms since their adult form remain undescribed (Morgan et al. 1985). Although the larval development of Cerataspis is described by five mysis stages (I-V) (Heegaard 1966), the large larva is very un-mysid like and appears more like that of a megalops with the abdomen bend …

True Will Vs. Conscious Will: An Exploration Of Aleister Crowley's Concepts Of True Will And Conscious Will And Its Possible Applications To A Midsummer Nights Dream, Marison, And Wicked, John Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In our lives we will have to make hundreds upon thousands of choices. The effects of these choices will follow us with varying intervals; some effects may be brief while others may literally last a lifetime. In these moments that we are forced to chose, it ultimately comes down to two options, what we should do, and what we want to do. Essentially, it is a choice between the head and the heart. Playwrights depend on these moments of choice, for it is the basis of almost all plays. At some point, the protagonist must make a choice, even if …

The Role Of Other:An Exploration Of A Facilitator's Role In Playbuilding With Economically Disadvantaged Adolescent Women, Laurie Melnik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the Fall 2007 semester, I facilitated the devising of a new play with students from a school located in St. Louis, Missouri. As an employee of a mid-America prominent regional theatre company, the organization partnering with the school on this project, I was hired as the teaching artist who oversaw the students' playwriting. Both the school and the regional theatre company hoped my being there would assist the girls in writing a play that connected to their Top 20 Teens curriculum as well as demonstrate the high standards that are expected of them by their school's administration. This is …

Through the eyes of Liza, this piece will explore the duality of her life--the underlining turmoil that fluctuated between her personal life and professional career. My methodology includes studying biographies, articles, and interviews written about Liza Minnelli, as well as watching films and performances …
Sexuality And Courtships Of 19th Century Vienna Vs 21st Century America Through The Roles Of Alfred And Sam In Romance, Romance, James Haynie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For my thesis, I plan to research the sexuality and the process of courtship, and the differences between 19th century Vienna and modern America, specifically as to how it relates to my characters in Romance, Romance. My interest in the topic springs directly from the script. What I mean is, my initial idea of sexuality of the 19th century is very Victorian and straight-laced, where as I think of modern day as very sexually liberated. However, in the script, the first act, set in Vienna, is much more sexually explicit and active. In fact, the second act is all building …

Investigating The 'Audience' In Theatre For Young Audiences: The Call For Artistic Educators, Amanda Morris
Investigating The 'Audience' In Theatre For Young Audiences: The Call For Artistic Educators, Amanda Morris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Theatre history provides little information on theatre audiences and how the concept of an audience has changed over time. Through the investigation of theatre history texts, theatre theorists' manifestos, and interviews with workers in the field of theatre for young audiences, this thesis outlines the theatre audience from the first performance to the present and examines how the history of the concept of "child" and young audiences has developed in recent years. Opposing views exist on the subject of how a child is perceived as well as the purpose and role of a theatre audience. In this thesis, I investigate …
