A Window On The Fifth Dimension, Frank A. Farris Nov 2008

A Window On The Fifth Dimension, Frank A. Farris

Mathematics and Computer Science

Is there enough mathematics in your home? What visual aids do you keep on hand for that inevitable moment when guests want to know why you spend your life on mathematics? Feeling a lack in this area, I commissioned glass artist Hans Schepker to produce a window - from the fifth dimension? - based on an image that came up in my research. It turned out splendidly, and you can see it on the cover of this issue of MAA FOCUS.

Impacts Of ‘Three Strikes And You’Re Out’ On Crime Trends In California And Throughout The United States, Elsa Y. Chen Nov 2008

Impacts Of ‘Three Strikes And You’Re Out’ On Crime Trends In California And Throughout The United States, Elsa Y. Chen

Political Science

The impacts of Three Strikes on crime in California and throughout the U.S. are analyzed using cross-sectional time series analysis of state-level data from 1986 to 2005. The model measures both deterrence and incapacitation effects, controlling for pre-existing crime trends and economic, demographic, and policy factors. Despite limited usage outside California, the presence of a Three Strikes law appears to be associated with slightly but significantly faster rates of decline in robbery, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft nationwide. Three Strikes is also associated with slower declines in murder rates. Although California’s law is the broadest and most-frequently-used Three Strikes …

Cross-Functional Integration And New Product Performance: An Empirical Analysis And Findings, Lisa C. Troy, Tanawat Hirunyawipada, Audhesh K. Paswan Nov 2008

Cross-Functional Integration And New Product Performance: An Empirical Analysis And Findings, Lisa C. Troy, Tanawat Hirunyawipada, Audhesh K. Paswan

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

Although cross-functional integration is often considered an important element in a successful new product development program, a great deal of variance exists in extant literature regarding how integration is defined and implemented and how relevant studies are conducted.

The authors attempt to bring clarity to a diverse set of 25 studies that investigate cross-functional integration by empirically analyzing 146 correlations between integration and aspects of new product success. The authors examine the impact of 12 potential moderators that affect the integration–success link using meta-analysis techniques.

The findings indicate that though cross-functional integration may indeed have a direct impact on success, …

Voices Of Hope, Mildred M. Pearson Dr.

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Using the self-efficacy literature as a theoretical framework, this article discusses the reality of academic achievement and academic performance among selected African American middle school girls. Both quantitative and qualitative research approaches are used to investigate the influence of selfefficacy. Thirty-seven African American middle school girls filled out an adversity questionnaire and also responded to the Children’s Self-efficacy Survey. Based on the results, 10 girls were selected for in-depth interviews. Responses to interview questions reveal how these girls’ self-efficacy helped them not only cope with obstacles in their lives but also excel academically. These responses provide important insights for educators …

Estimating Explanatory Power In A Simple Regression Model Via Smoothers, Rand R. Wilcox Nov 2008

Estimating Explanatory Power In A Simple Regression Model Via Smoothers, Rand R. Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Consider the regression model Y = γ(X) + ε , where γ(X) is some conditional measure of location associated with Y , given X. Let Υ̂ be some estimate of Y, given X, and let τ2 (Y) be some measure of variation. Explanatory power is η2 = τ2 (Υ̂) /τ2(Y) . When γ(X) = β0 + β1X and τ2(Y) is the variance of Y , η2 = ρ2 , …

Data Mining Ceo Compensation, Susan M. Adams, Atul Gupta, Dominique M. Haughton, John D. Leeth Nov 2008

Data Mining Ceo Compensation, Susan M. Adams, Atul Gupta, Dominique M. Haughton, John D. Leeth

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The need to pre-specify expected interactions between variables is an issue in multiple regression. Theoretical and practical considerations make it impossible to pre-specify all possible interactions. The functional form of the dependent variable on the predictors is unknown in many cases. Two ways are described in which the data mining technique Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) can be utilized: first, to obtain possible improvements in model specification, and second, to test for the robustness of findings from a regression analysis. An empirical illustration is provided to show how MARS can be used for both purposes.

Application Of Dynamic Poisson Models To Japanese Cancer Mortality Data, Shuichi Midorikawa, Etsuo Miyaoka, Bruce Smith Nov 2008

Application Of Dynamic Poisson Models To Japanese Cancer Mortality Data, Shuichi Midorikawa, Etsuo Miyaoka, Bruce Smith

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A dynamic Poisson model is used with a Bayesian approach to modeling to predict cancer mortality. The complexity of the posterior distribution prohibits direct evaluation of the posterior, and so parameters are estimated by using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The model is applied to analyze lung and stomach cancer data which have been collected in Japan.

Variance Estimation In Time Series Regression Models, Samir Safi Nov 2008

Variance Estimation In Time Series Regression Models, Samir Safi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The effect of variance estimation of regression coefficients when disturbances are serially correlated in time series regression models is studied. Variance estimation enters into confidence interval estimation, hypotheses testing, spectrum estimation, and expressions for the estimated standard error of prediction. Using computer simulations, the robustness of various estimators, including Estimated Generalized Least Squares (EGLS) was considered. The estimates of variance of the coefficient estimators produced by computer packages were considered. Models were generated with a second order auto-correlated error structure, considering the robustness of estimators based upon misspecified order. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) (order zero) estimates outperformed first order EGLS. …

Robust Predictive Inference For Multivariate Linear Models With Elliptically Contoured Distribution Using Bayesian, Classical And Structural Approaches, B. M. Golam Kibria Nov 2008

Robust Predictive Inference For Multivariate Linear Models With Elliptically Contoured Distribution Using Bayesian, Classical And Structural Approaches, B. M. Golam Kibria

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Predictive distributions of future response and future regression matrices under multivariate elliptically contoured distributions are discussed. Under the elliptically contoured response assumptions, these are identical to those obtained under matric normal or matric-t errors using structural, Bayesian with improper prior, or classical approaches. This gives inference robustness with respect to departure from the reference case of independent sampling from the matric normal or matric t to multivariate elliptically contoured distributions. The importance of the predictive distribution for skewed elliptical models is indicated; the elliptically contoured distribution, as well as matric t distribution, have significant applications in statistical practices.

An Examination Of The Contemporary Viability Of Moltmann's Personal And Cosmic Eschatology For Evangelical And Roman Catholic Theology, Chris Wiley Nov 2008

An Examination Of The Contemporary Viability Of Moltmann's Personal And Cosmic Eschatology For Evangelical And Roman Catholic Theology, Chris Wiley

Seminary Masters Theses

The following thesis will examine and critique Moltmann's personal and cosmic eschatology as compared and contrasted with the views of Joseph Ratzinger and Millard Erickson. These two theologians are chosen to represent critics from two schools of thought in response to Moltmann's theology of hope, namely those critical of his theological method and those critical of his political theology. This examination focuses on the viability of Moltmann's personal and cosmic eschatology in contemporary Evangelical and Catholic theology. This study begins with a review of Moltmann's methodology and general treatment of themes in his theology as they pertain to eschatology. This …

Queer Teens And Legislative Bullies: The Cruel And Invidious Discrimination Behind Heterosexist Statutory Rape Laws, Michael J. Higdon Nov 2008

Queer Teens And Legislative Bullies: The Cruel And Invidious Discrimination Behind Heterosexist Statutory Rape Laws, Michael J. Higdon

Scholarly Works

Most states make an exception to their statutory rape laws for sexual acts involving an adolescent victim, who is below the age of consent, when the defendant is close in age to the victim (i.e., generally no older than three or four years). However, a few states explicitly limit such exceptions (commonly referred to as Romeo and Juliet exceptions) to only those situations involving teens who are of the opposite gender. Thus, adolescents in these states who have sex with someone below the age of consent, and who are also the same gender as the defendant, cannot avail themselves to …
