A Review Of Qualitative Research Groups In Web 2.0 Social Networking Communities: Prepare To Be Amused, Inspired, And Even Blown Away, Maureen Duffy Nov 2008

A Review Of Qualitative Research Groups In Web 2.0 Social Networking Communities: Prepare To Be Amused, Inspired, And Even Blown Away, Maureen Duffy

The Qualitative Report

The presence of qualitative research groups on Web 2.0 social networking applications, like Facebook, has continued to grow. These groups are self organizing systems of people interested in particular aspects of qualitative research. Many of these qualitative research groups have companion internet websites and some also have companion YouTube channels, creating a very strong cyber presence. While visitors to these groups are encouraged to evaluate their quality for themselves, in general, the groups provide accessibility and good information for practitioners, students, and teachers of qualitative research alike. Most importantly, a number of these online qualitative research groups can serve as …

Phase Unwrapping Insar Image Using Local Energy Minimization Approach, Kusworo Adi, Tati L.R. Mengko, Andriyan B. Suksmono, Hendra Gunawan

Makara Journal of Technology

Phase Unwrapping InSAR Image Using Local Energy Minimization Approach. Reconstruction process of phase data from its cover is called Phase Unwrapping (PU). Ideally, without any noise phrase, singularity, and aliasing problems, the phase information can be unwrapped easily. However, in fact, the phase data actually always get noise disturbance and discontinuity. The PU process becomes more complicated and needs a better PU algorithm to address the problems properly. In this research, the local PU algorithm is developed using minimization of close related firstorder pixels energy approach. In this method, the energy difference between four close related pixels is counted, followed …

Two Element Microstrip Antenna Array with Defected Ground Structure. This paper presents a two element microstrip antenna array using trapezium shape defected ground structure (DGS). The DGS is inserted in the ground plane between two elements of antenna array. Insertion of the DGS is intended to suppress the mutual coupling effect produced by antenna array. Simulation and measurement results were taken and compared between antenna array with and without DGS. Measurement results show that the antenna with DGS compared to antenna without DGS can suppress mutual coupling effect to 7.9 dB, improve the return loss to 33.29% from -30.188 dB …

Temperature- And Phase-Independent Lateral Force Sensor Based On A Core-Offset Multi-Mode Fiber Interferometer, Bo Dong, Da-Peng Zhou, Li Wei, Wing-Ki Liu, John W.Y. Lit Nov 2008

Temperature- And Phase-Independent Lateral Force Sensor Based On A Core-Offset Multi-Mode Fiber Interferometer, Bo Dong, Da-Peng Zhou, Li Wei, Wing-Ki Liu, John W.Y. Lit

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A novel lateral force sensor based on a core-offset multi-mode fiber (MMF) interferometer is reported. High extinction ratio can be obtained by misaligning a fused cross section between the single-mode fiber (SMF) and MMF. With the variation of the lateral force applied to a short section of the MMF, the extinction ratio changes while the interference phase remains almost constant. The change of the extinction ratio is independent of temperature variations. The proposed force sensor has the advantages of temperature- and phase-independency, high extinction ratio sensitivity, good repeatability, low cost, and simple structure. Moreover, the core-offset MMF interferometer is expected …

State Of Polarization Of A Stochastic Electromagnetic Beam In An Optical Resonator, Olga Korotkova, Min Yao, Yangjian Cai, Halil T. Eyyuboglu, Yahya Baykal Nov 2008

State Of Polarization Of A Stochastic Electromagnetic Beam In An Optical Resonator, Olga Korotkova, Min Yao, Yangjian Cai, Halil T. Eyyuboglu, Yahya Baykal

Physics Articles and Papers

On the basis of the unified theory of coherence and polarization, we investigate the behavior of the state of polarization of a stochastic electromagnetic beam in a Gaussian cavity. Formulations both in terms of Stokes parameters and in terms of polarization ellipse are given. We show that the state of polarization stabilizes, except in the case of a lossless cavity, after several passages between the mirrors, exhibiting monotonic or oscillatory behavior depending on the parameters of the resonator. We also find that an initially (spatially) uniformly polarized beam remains nonuniformly polarized even for a large number of passages between the …

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

Our justice system is a fundamental and far-reaching component of Canada=s system of democracy. It is complex with four broad divisions of law: civil, family, criminal and administrative. Lack of public understanding of our justice system is therefore a key and fundamental concern for the administration of justice.

Shouting Down The Chief: How A Corporate Group Replaced Hierarchical Authority At The Pre-Columbian Community Of El Coyote, Honduras, William John Mcfarlane

Anthropology Papers and Presentations

Using a research design that posits power as an interpretive framework, the author applies a multiscalar approach to individuals, groups, communities, and interaction networks. Used here, power, or the ability to advance one’s interests, is garnered through the strategic use or manipulation of sociopolitical ties, material resources, or ideological paradigms. In this paper, the author draws upon evidence from the site of El Coyote in northwestern Honduras. This pre-Columbian community is well suited for a consideration of power due to its remarkably well-preserved and robust ninth and tenth-century remains, which document the relocation and reorganization of the ceremonial and administrative …

The Use Of A Summary Journal Assignment To Promote Theory And Practice Integration In Experientially Based Courses, Adele Baruch Phd, Ju Hong-Chittaphong, Christine Potaczala Nov 2008

The Use Of A Summary Journal Assignment To Promote Theory And Practice Integration In Experientially Based Courses, Adele Baruch Phd, Ju Hong-Chittaphong, Christine Potaczala

Faculty Publications

The authors discuss the use of a summary journal, an assignment designed to facilitate the integration of theory and course experience in practice-based Counsellor Education courses. The reflections on the assignment are provided by the instructor and two students, from two different practice-based courses. The summary journal does appear to provide an opportunity for students to compare their own experiences with formal theory presented in class and in texts, although the quality of this integration varies. The provision of prior student summaries appears to be helpful to those students who are inexperienced in constructing theoretical meaning out of their own …

An Aspect-Based Approach To Checking Design Constraints At Run-Time, Yoonsik Cheon, Carmen Avila, Steve Roach, Cuauhtemoc Munoz, Neith Estrada, Valeria Fierro, Jessica Romo Nov 2008

An Aspect-Based Approach To Checking Design Constraints At Run-Time, Yoonsik Cheon, Carmen Avila, Steve Roach, Cuauhtemoc Munoz, Neith Estrada, Valeria Fierro, Jessica Romo

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Design decisions and constraints of a software system can be specified precisely using a formal notation such as the Object Constraint Language (OCL). However, they are not executable, and assuring the conformance of an implementation to its design is hard. The inability of expressing design constraints in an implementation and checking them at runtime invites, among others, the problem of design drift and corrosion. We propose runtime checks as a solution to mitigate this problem. The key idea of our approach is to translate design constraints written in a formal notation such as OCL into aspects that, when applied to …

Reaching Children Communally: School Improvement Through Teacher Collaboration, Peter H. Roukema Nov 2008

Reaching Children Communally: School Improvement Through Teacher Collaboration, Peter H. Roukema

Master of Education Program Theses

From a Christian understanding of both learning and community, this research examines the impact of teacher collaboration on student achievement and school culture in North American schools. Particularly in high schools, due to structural chal1enges, lack of administrative support and teacher satisfaction with the status quo, peer collaboration is not common. Five cases are examined. The first three demonstrate a positive connection between teacher collaboration and school improvement. The fourth demonstrates that teacher evaluation can also benefit from a much more participatory role for the teacher. The last case examines some of the challenges of centering col1aboration in high school …
