The Literary Fantastic In African And English Literature, Terri Ochiagha Dec 2008

The Literary Fantastic In African And English Literature, Terri Ochiagha

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "The Literary Fantastic in African and English Literature," Terri Ochiagha begins with pointing out that in his Introduction á la literature fantastique, Tzvetan Todorov proposed the theoretical frameworks he believed should be the basis of the identification and analysis of a literary work as fantastic. While Todorov's text is only one of the many treatises on the fantastic in literary scholarship, in most of these African prose is seldom a subject of exemplification or analysis. In the rare instances in which such texts are mentioned, they are often and hastily classified as magic realism. Ochiagha posits whether …

Surface Water Interaction With The Flood Plain In The Lower Virgin River, Clark County, Nevada, Jeffrie L. Pompeo

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Development of existing surface water rights on the Virgin River would decrease Southern Nevada's dependency on the Colorado River. Three monitoring sites were established to examine the relationship between Virgin River surface water flows and the floodplain aquifer. Automated water level measuring devices were installed in piezometers and wells to continuously track water levels and flow direction. Pump tests were conducted to establish the hydraulic parameters of the floodplain aquifer. Water chemistry data was analyzed to help determine the correlation between the floodplain aquifer and Virgin River water. Precipitation, recharge, streamflow and ET estimates were used to discuss water budgets. …

Developing An Instrument To Measure School Community Engagement With Implementation Of Information Literacy Curriculum, Candace Wexler Aiani Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable survey instrument to be used by librarians and other educational leaders to measure implementation of a school's information literacy program. The goal was to create an instrument that would consider implementation of a library-centered program within the context and culture of the whole school. Once developed, the survey would identify areas of strength and weaknesses in implementation, allowing schools to design interventions and professional development opportunities to further implementation. A theoretical basis for measuring implementation as well as an initial set of dimensions of implementation was identified during …

Sequence Alignment With Traceback On Reconfigurable Hardware, Scott Lloyd, Quinn O. Snell Dec 2008

Sequence Alignment With Traceback On Reconfigurable Hardware, Scott Lloyd, Quinn O. Snell

Faculty Publications

Biological sequence alignment is an essential tool used in molecular biology and biomedical applications. The growing volume of genetic data and the complexity of sequence alignment present a challenge in obtaining alignment results in a timely manner. Known methods to accelerate alignment on reconfigurable hardware only address sequence comparison, limit the sequence length, or exhibit memory and I/O bottlenecks. A space-efficient, global sequence alignment algorithm and architecture is presented that accelerates the forward scan and traceback in hardware without memory and I/O limitations. With 256 processing elements in FPGA technology, a performance gain over 300 times that of a desktop …

Studies To Characterize The Requirements For The Binding And Release Of Erdj3, A Mammalian Er Dnaj Homolog, From Substrates, Yi Jin

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Heat shock protein 70s (Hsp70s) and their DnaJ co-factors exist in all organisms and in all eukaryotic organelles. These highly conserved chaperone pairs facilitate a large number of cellular processes. ERdj3 was identified as a soluble, lumenal DnaJ family member that binds to unassembled immunoglobulin heavy chains (HC) along with the BiP chaperone complex in the endoplasmic reticulum of mammalian cells. Here we demonstrate that ERdj3 binds directly to two unfolded substrates: immunoglobulin γHC and denatured firefly luciferase. Using mutagenesis studies on ERdj3 in both in vivo and in vitro binding assays, we defined ERdj3’s critical amino acids in domain …

Factors Affecting Long-Term Outcomes Following Intensive In-Home Services, Sarah Hurley Dec 2008

Factors Affecting Long-Term Outcomes Following Intensive In-Home Services, Sarah Hurley

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Intensive in-home services (IIHS) work with families toward building skills and resources to better manage their children with behavioral difficulties. Factors that impact long-term outcomes following IIHS are not well understood. This study examined the relative importance of youth demographic and clinical characteristics, family history variables, characteristics of program participation, and organizational-level factors in explaining placement stability, educational progress, and contact with legal authorities one year following discharge from IIHS.

The sample included all youth who received IIHS, were discharged between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2006, and completed a follow up at one-year post-discharge (n = 2,649) from …

Growing Through Copying: The Negative Consequences Of Innovation On Franchise Network Growth, Robert J. Jensen, Gabriel Szulanski Dec 2008

Growing Through Copying: The Negative Consequences Of Innovation On Franchise Network Growth, Robert J. Jensen, Gabriel Szulanski

Faculty Publications

We explore how copying more exactly a blueprint for establishing a franchise network in a new country influences franchising network growth. We test opposing hypotheses using panel data involving the transfer of franchising knowledge to 23 different countries, measuring the degree to which master licensees "copy exactly" knowledge concerning how to grow a network in their country and the effect that their approach has on subsequent network growth. We conclude that a strategy of copying more exactly seems to enhance growth and that the benefits of more exactly replicating knowledge in the first year of a local network's existence persist …

Self-Consciousness Moderates The Relationship Between Perceived Norms And Drinking In College Students, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Clayton Neighbors Dec 2008

Self-Consciousness Moderates The Relationship Between Perceived Norms And Drinking In College Students, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Clayton Neighbors

Heads Up!

The current research examines whether self-consciousness subscales have prognostic value in the relationship between perceived norms and drinking and if that differs among college men and women. Results indicate that self-consciousness moderates gender differences in the relationship between perceived social norms and drinking. A strong positive relationship was found between perceived norms (descriptive and injunctive) and drinking for men relative to women and this was more pronounced among individuals who were lower in public self-consciousness. Similarly, the relationship between perceived injunctive norms and drinking was significantly stronger among men than women and this was more pronounced among individuals who were …

Estrogen And Hippocampal Plasticity In Rodent Models, Michael R. Foy, Michel Baudry, Roberta Diaz Brinton, Richard F. Thompson

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Accumulating evidence indicates that ovarian hormones regulate a wide variety of non-reproductive functions in the central nervous system by interacting with several molecular and cellular processes. A growing animal literature using both adult and aged rodent models indicates that 17β-estradiol, the most potent of the biologically relevant estrogens, facilitates some forms of learning and memory, in particular those that involve hippocampal-dependent tasks. A recently developed triple-transgenic mouse (3xTg-AD) has been widely used as an animal model of Alzheimer's disease, as this mouse exhibits an age-related and progressive neuropathological phenotype that includes both plaque and tangle pathology mainly restricted to hippocampus, …

Assessment And Accountability: An Exploration Of Teachers' Practices In Assessing English Language Proficiency, Mari B. Rasmussen Dec 2008

Assessment And Accountability: An Exploration Of Teachers' Practices In Assessing English Language Proficiency, Mari B. Rasmussen

Theses and Dissertations

Assessment is an important component in an education program. Current educational policy includes large scale assessments with stringent accountability requirements. All students are expected to meet standards for achievement, including those who have historically not been successful.

Students from non-English language backgrounds are one of the populations of students who do not achieve academic success at the same rate as other students. This population of students is increasing in our nation's schools, causing this achievement gap to be of greater concern. Added to the concern is the requirement that English Language Learners (ELLs) must meet rigorous standards in both academic …

Counteracting Hate Speech As A Way Of Preventing Genocidal Violence, Wibke Timmermann Dec 2008

Counteracting Hate Speech As A Way Of Preventing Genocidal Violence, Wibke Timmermann

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Hate speech regularly, if not inevitably, precedes and accompanies ethnic conflicts, and particularly genocidal violence. Without such incitement to hatred and the exacerbation of xenophobic, anti-Semitic, or racist tendencies, no genocide would be possible and persecutory campaigns would rarely meet with a sympathetic response in the general public. In order to successfully prevent genocidal crimes and violence, therefore, it is indispensable to effectively address the problem of systematic incitement to hatred. While less virulent forms of hate speech may be adequately addressed by human- rights law obligations on governments to prohibit such acts, vicious, systematic, and state-organized hate propaganda should …

NCCG is located in Hamilton and Sequatchie counties, Tennessee, on the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau. Within the study area are 2,862 hectares of eastern deciduous forest that contain 12 distinct habitat types. A survey of these habitat types over three growing seasons yielded 110 families, 329 genera, and 604 species or lesser taxa, including 238 county records. Seventy-six introduced species were found, comprising 12% of the total flora. Eleven species with either a state or …

Cognitive Development And The Understanding Of Informed Consent, Lindsey Elizabeth Pearse Dec 2008

Cognitive Development And The Understanding Of Informed Consent, Lindsey Elizabeth Pearse

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The informed consent process is an important criterion for all research studies. However, researchers rarely ask or even consider how many participants truly understand the informed consent information and their research rights. Currently, researchers base a participant’s ability to understand informed consent information and research rights on age. In the present study it was hypothesized that cognitive development is a predictor of ethical knowledge. Accordingly, it was argue d that a participant’s ability to understand informed consent and research rights should not be based on a participant’s age but instead on the participant’s cognitive development. Students at the University of …

Organisational Commitment: Buffer Of Work Stress?, Laura Jones Dec 2008

Organisational Commitment: Buffer Of Work Stress?, Laura Jones

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Work stress has been linked to negative health outcomes; however, evidence has shown that organisational commitment can act as a buffer to work stress. This is known as the buffering hypothesis of commitment. It was hypothesised that affective commitment would buffer negative effects of specific work stressors and reduce ill health. A convenience sample of 52 urban bus drivers (44 male and 8 female) completed the ASSET questionnaire (an organisational stress screening tool). Limited evidence to support the buffering hypothesis was found, although high levels of commitment were associated with low levels of psychological ill health. Suggestive gender differences were …
