United States Army: Publications
Only a limited number of complete mitochondrial genome sequences belonging to Native American haplogroups were available until recently, which left America as the continent with the least amount of information about sequence variation of entire mitochondrial DNAs. In this study, a comprehensive overview of all available complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genomes of the four pan-American haplogroups A2, B2, C1, and D1 is provided by revising the information scattered throughout GenBank and the literature, and adding 14 novel mtDNA sequences. The phylogenies of haplogroups A2, B2, C1, and D1 reveal a large number of sub-haplogroups but suggest that the ancestral Beringian …

Analysis Of The Nucleotide Sequence Of The Guinea Pig Cytomegalovirus (Gpcmv) Genome, Mark R. Schleiss, Alistair Mcgregor, K Yeon Choi, Shailesh V. Date, Xiaohong Cui, Michael Mcvoy
Pediatrics Publications
In this report we describe the genomic sequence of guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) assembled from a tissue culture-derived bacterial artificial chromosome clone, plasmid clones of viral restriction fragments, and direct PCR sequencing of viral DNA. The GPCMV genome is 232,678 bp, excluding the terminal repeats, and has a GC content of 55%. A total of 105 open reading frames (ORFs) of > 100 amino acids with sequence and/or positional homology to other CMV ORFs were annotated. Positional and sequence homologs of human cytomegalovirus open reading frames UL23 through UL122 were identified. Homology with other cytomegaloviruses was most prominent in the central …
Comparative Analysis Of Cpg Islands In Four Fish Genomes, Leng Han, Zhongming Zhao
Comparative Analysis Of Cpg Islands In Four Fish Genomes, Leng Han, Zhongming Zhao
Psychiatry Publications
There has been much interest in CpG islands (CGIs), clusters of CpG dinucleotides in GC-rich regions, because they are considered gene markers and involved in gene regulation. To date, there has been no genome-wide analysis of CGIs in the fish genome. We first evaluated the performance of three popular CGI identification algorithms in four fish genomes (tetraodon, stickleback, medaka, and zebrafish). Our results suggest that Takai and Jones' (2002) algorithm is most suitable for comparative analysis of CGIs in the fish genome. Then, we performed a systematic analysis of CGIs in the four fish genomes using Takai and Jones' algorithm, …

The Spectrum
In this article, we review material that, in title, may seem esoteric. However, through our discussion we hope to convince the reader that a study of the two-photon photosensitized production of singlet oxygen provides the framework for an interesting cross-disciplinary research program of broad scope. The issues addressed cover ground that ranges from fundamental physical chemistry to cell biology.

Geographic Variation In The Pollination Biology Of Passiflora Lutea (Passifloraceae), J. Burks Holland, J. Lanza
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Like most species of Passiflora, P. lutea is reported to produce one-day flowers with complicated floral movements and requires deposition of non-self pollen for fruit production. Medium sized bees are the most likely pollinators in central Texas. We report on a series of observations and experimental manipulations that compare the reproductive biology of P. lutea in central Arkansas to that reported previously from plants about 800 km distant in central Texas. We observed floral movements and floral visitors, compared fruit production of flowers available to pollinators versus flowers from which pollinators were excluded, and compared fruit production of flowers that …

Working Memory Deficits In Children: Contributions Of Executive Control Processes And Symptoms Of Adhd, Stacie Leffard
Working Memory Deficits In Children: Contributions Of Executive Control Processes And Symptoms Of Adhd, Stacie Leffard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The most empirically supported model of working memory contains four components: (a) the phonological loop, (b) the visuospatial sketchpad, (c) the episodic buffer, and (d) the central executive (Baddeley and Hitch, 1974; Baddeley, 2003). The central executive has been fractionated into four subprocesses: (a) sustained attention, (b) selective attention/inhibition (c) shifting attention, and (d) control of retrieval from long-term memory (Baddeley, 2003; Mirsky et al., 1991; Zoelch et al., 2005). Children with ADHD are known to have working memory deficits, though the role of each component of the working memory system in these deficits is not known. The purpose of …
Acidification And Stress Physiology In A Plethodontid Salamander, Desmognathus Ochrophaeus, Lauren Ricciardella
Acidification And Stress Physiology In A Plethodontid Salamander, Desmognathus Ochrophaeus, Lauren Ricciardella
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In western Pennsylvania, chronically and episodically acidified stream habitats are common. The mountain dusky salamander, Desmognathus ochrophaeus, is an abundant species that is associated with acidified streams. The focus of this research was to (1) examine the effects of acidified habitats on the stress hormone, corticosterone, and (2) examine the effects of corticosterone on behavior. In an acidified stream site, males had a blunted corticosterone stress response after capture and handling compared to an acid neutral site. There was a trend for elevated corticosterone to inhibit several aspects of male mating behavior, including insemination of females. These data suggest that …
Riparian Buffer Design Guidelines For Water Quality And Wildlife Habitat Functions On Agricultural Landscapes In The Intermountain West, Craig W. Johnson, Susan Buffler
Riparian Buffer Design Guidelines For Water Quality And Wildlife Habitat Functions On Agricultural Landscapes In The Intermountain West, Craig W. Johnson, Susan Buffler
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Intermountain West planners, designers, and resource managers are looking for science-based procedures for determining buffer widths and management techniques that will optimize the benefits riparian ecosystems provide. This study reviewed the riparian buffer literature, including protocols used to determine optimum buffer widths for water quality and wildlife habitat functions. We selected an existing protocol for determining buffer widths for water quality functions that could be readily adapted for use in this region. The protocol is based on the best available science, uses existing or easily obtained data, and is practical for in-field applications. The protocol was modified to accommodate Intermountain …
Conservation Buffers: Design Guidelines For Buffers, Corridors, And Greenways, Gary Bentrup
Conservation Buffers: Design Guidelines For Buffers, Corridors, And Greenways, Gary Bentrup
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Conservation Buffers: Design Guidelines for Buffers, Corridors, and Greenways
Over 80 illustrated design guidelines for conservation buffers are synthesized and developed from a review of over 1,400 research publications. Each guideline describes a specific way that a vegetative buffer can be applied to protect soil, improve air and water quality, enhance fish and wildlife habitat, produce economic products, provide recreation opportunities, or beautify the landscape. These science-based guidelines are presented as easy-to-understand rules-of-thumb for facilitating the planning and designing of conservation buffers in rural and urban landscapes.

Nitrogen And Media Assessment For First-Year Pot-In-Pot Production Of Container And Bare Root Liners In The Intermountain West, Jaydee Gunnell, Paul R. Grossl, Roger Kjelgren
CWEL Publications
We investigated optimum nitrogen rates and different growth substrates for short-term fi nish production of container and bare root shade tree liners in a pot-in-pot production system in the Intermountain West. In one study, nitrogen ranging from 0–27 g N·tree–1(0–36 lbs N·1000 ft–2) as urea was applied to quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), ‘Autumn Blaze’ maple (Acer × freemannii ‘Autumn Blaze’), ‘Chanticleer’ flowering pear (Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’), and ‘Canada Red’ chokecherry (Prunus virginiana ‘Canada Red’). Twenty-six liter liners (#7 container) were transplanted into 57 liter (#15) containers in a retail nursery finishing pot-in-pot system. Trunk diameter growth and shoot-tip elongation measurements …

Effects Of Habitat Disturbance On Survival Rates Of Softshell Turtles (Apalone Spinifera) In An Urban Stream, Michael Plummer, David G. Krementz, Larkin A. Powell, Nathan Mills
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
We monitored Spiny Softshell Turtles (Apalone spinifera) using mark-recapture during 1994– 2005 in Gin Creek, Searcy, Arkansas. In 1997–2000 the creek bed and riparian zone were bulldozed in an effort to remove debris and improve water flow. This disturbance appeared to reduce the quantity and quality of turtle habitat. We tested for the potential effect of this habitat disturbance on the survival rates of marked turtles. We estimated annual survival rates for the population using models that allowed for variation in survival by state of maturation, year, and effects of the disturbance; we evaluated two different models of …
