A Tick From A Prehistoric Arizona Coprolite, Keith L. Johnson, Karl J. Reinhard, Luciana Sianto, Adauto Araújo, Scott Lyell Gardner, John J. Janovy Jr.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Ticks have never been reported in archaeological analyses. Here, we present the discovery of a tick from a coprolite excavated from Antelope Cave in extreme northwest Arizona. Dietary analysis indicates that the coprolite has a human origin. This archaeological occupation is associated with the Ancestral Pueblo culture (Anasazi). This discovery supports previous hypotheses that ticks were a potential source of disease and that ectoparasites were eaten by ancient people.

Bifidobacteria In Feces And Environmental Waters, Regina Lamendella, Jorge W. Santo Domingo, Catherine A. Kelty, Daniel B. Oerther

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bifidobacteria have been recommended as potential indicators of human fecal pollution in surface waters even though very little is known about their presence in nonhuman fecal sources. The objective of this research was to shed light on the occurrence and molecular diversity of this fecal indicator group in different animals and environmental waters. Genus- and species-specific 16S rRNA gene PCR assays were used to study the presence of bifidobacteria among 269 fecal DNA extracts from 32 different animals. Twelve samples from three wastewater treatment plants and 34 water samples from two fecally impacted watersheds were also tested. The species-specific assays …

The Relevance And Value Of Confucianism In Contemporary Business Ethics, Gary Kok Yew Chan Feb 2008

The Relevance And Value Of Confucianism In Contemporary Business Ethics, Gary Kok Yew Chan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article examines the relevance and value of Confucian Ethics to contemporary Business Ethics by comparing their respective perspectives and approaches towards business activities within the modern capitalist framework, the principle of reciprocity and the concept of human virtues. Confucian Ethics provides interesting parallels with contemporary Western-oriented Business Ethics. At the same, it diverges from contemporary Business Ethics in some significant ways. Upon an examination of philosophical texts as well as empirical studies, it is argued that Confucian Ethics is able to provide some unique philosophical and intellectual perspectives in order to forge a richer understanding and analysis of the …

Institutions In The Marketplace Of Ideas, Joseph Blocher Feb 2008

Institutions In The Marketplace Of Ideas, Joseph Blocher

Duke Law Journal

If any area of constitutional law has been defined by a metaphor, the First Amendment is the area, and the "marketplace of ideas" is the metaphor. Ever since Justice Holmes invoked the concept in his Abrams dissent, academic and popular understandings of the First Amendment have embraced the notion that free speech, like the free market, creates a competitive environment in which the best ideas ultimately prevail. But as with the free market for goods and services, there are discontents who point to the market failures that make the marketplace metaphor aspirational at best, and inequitable at worst. Defenders of …

The Internationalization Of Public Interest Law, Scott L. Cummings Feb 2008

The Internationalization Of Public Interest Law, Scott L. Cummings

Duke Law Journal

This Article describes and explains the influence of global change on American public interest law over the past quarter-century. It suggests that contemporary public interest lawyers, unlike their civil rights-era predecessors, operate in a professional environment integrated into the global political economy in ways that have profound implications for whom they represent, where they advocate, and what sources of law they invoke. The Article provides a preliminary map of this professional environment by tracing the impact of three defining transnational processes on the development of the modem public interest law system: the increasing magnitude and changing composition of immigration, the …

Expression And Evolutionary Relationships Of The Chenopodium Quinoa 11s Seed Storage Protein Gene, Mikel Stevens, Peter J. Maughan, Daniel J. Fairbanks, Marie R. B. Balzotti, Jennifer N. Thornton, David A. Mcclellan, Eric N. Jellen, Craig E. Coleman

Faculty Publications

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a food crop cultivated by subsistence farmers and commercial growers on the high Andean plateau, primarily in Bolivia, Peru, and Chile. Present interest in quinoa is due to its tolerance of harsh environments and its nutritional value. It is thought that the seed storage proteins of quinoa, particularly the 11S globulins and 2S albumins, are responsible for the relatively high protein content and ideal amino acid balance of the quinoa seed. Here we report the genomic and cDNA sequences for two 11S genes representing two orthologous loci from the quinoa genome. Important features of the …

Strengthening 4-H Youth Consumer Decision-Making Skills: Contest To Community Service, Carrie Ann Olson, Sara R. Croymans

Journal of Extension

The University of Minnesota Extension 4-H Consumer Decision Making program strengthens youth consumer decision-making skills by connecting the contest to service learning. The program uses experiential learning to teach youth to make wise consumer decisions. Youth participate in a judging contest where they rank consumer items based on criteria. Youth gain experience in organizing thoughts and defending decisions with oral reasons. Youth also participate in a "group process" activity where they gain experience with decision making as a team member. Participants are also involved in an educational activity with a community service-learning component that allows more in-depth learning.

Re-Homing Exotic Species--A Pilot Program To Prevent Release Of Exotic Aquatic Pet Species, Andrew M. Lazur, Ruth Hanessian

Journal of Extension

An educational poster program designed to inform pet owners of the dangers of releasing exotic species and provide a re-homing mechanism was evaluated as a means to reduce unwanted environmental releases. The poster provided a URL to the program partners' Web site, which listed participating re-homing pet shops in Maryland. Survey results revealed that 201 aquatic animals were re-homed.1 Survey respondents rated the poster at 94% and 92% percent for educating consumers of the potential of re-homing and benefits to the pet industry, respectively. The program provides a proactive opportunity and alternative to environmental release of exotic species.

Telling A Story Is Not A Crime, Danielle Ameden Jan 2008

Telling A Story Is Not A Crime, Danielle Ameden

Reason and Respect

Americans generally take for granted their freedom to read and write stories. The First Amendment says we’re allowed to stomp our feet in protest, verbally bash our political leaders, express ourselves through musical lyrics and poetry, and publish on every controversial topic under the sun. It takes mention of a fatwa – a death condemnation – for us to turn our heads and contemplate what our rights really mean.

Concourse Dreams: A Bronx Neighborhood And Its Future, William A. Casari

Publications and Research

This master's thesis focuses on the West Bronx recent past and illustrates what upward mobility meant for the Grand Concourse neighborhood populated with second generation immigrant groups at the beginning of the 20th century, including Jewish, Italian and Irish people. Later, most of the same area became a slum at the hands of city planners, New York City administration, and negative media portrayals. Race and ethnicity became even more talked about when non-white immigrants and migrants began moving to the Grand Concourse in huge numbers after World War Two.Through a celebrated Bronx past before 1950 and eventually the sensational media …
