"Black History Is Black Horror": Hauntology And Cultural Trauma In 20th And 21st Century Black Women's Gothic Horror, Destini S. Beckwith Apr 2026

"Black History Is Black Horror": Hauntology And Cultural Trauma In 20th And 21st Century Black Women's Gothic Horror, Destini S. Beckwith

Theses

Octavia Butler’s Afrofuturistic, gothic horror, neo-slave narrative Kindred (1979) vividly illustrates the story of a woman, Dana, involuntarily time-traveling from her home in 1976 Los Angeles, California, to a plantation in 19th-century Maryland. The interactions that she has with her ancestors, such as Alice, a free Black woman, and Rufus, a white man who enslaves Alice, leave Dana mentally and physically scarred. The 20th-century novel is meant to graphically reflect on the horrors of enslavement and the mental and physical effects that Black people endured/still endure because of it (i.e., grief, racial violence, and post-traumatic stress disorder). Furthermore, the novel’s …

Investigating The Role Of Sk-3 Interval I401 In Gene Drive By Neurospora Spore Killer-3, Alexandra Spriggs Apr 2026

Investigating The Role Of Sk-3 Interval I401 In Gene Drive By Neurospora Spore Killer-3, Alexandra Spriggs

Senior Theses – Biological Sciences

Neurospora crassa is a fungus that has been used to study genetics, more specifically, meiotic gene drive through its spore killing abilities. Meiotic drive describes a process in which selfish genetic elements bias Mendelian genetics to increase transmission to their offspring, eliminating any alleles that are sensitive. The spore killing mechanism of Neurospora’s Spore killer-3 (Sk-3) is an example of how meiotic drive works through a poison-antidote model. The Sk-3 genetic element consists of both a killing (poison) gene and a resistance (antidote) gene. The location of the resistance gene has been identified while the killing gene has not. To …

Structural Changes In Western Australia's Sheep Industry: Regional Patterns And Producer Adaptations, Tafesse Estifanos, Kate Pritchett, Kevin Foster, Amir Abadi Abadi Ghadim, Ross Kingwell

Animal production and livestock published reports

Western Australia's (WA) sheep industry has undergone substantial structural transformation since the 1990s, with a 67% reduction in the flock, from 38.4 million in 1989-90 to 12.7 million in 2020-21. This transformation process followed the collapse of the Reserve Price Scheme for wool in 1991. This report examines the spatial and temporal changes in flock size, composition, and producer adaptation strategies from 2010-11 to 2020-21, drawing on Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) census data and Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) producer surveys data.

Article Iii's Constraints On The Legislative Power, Elizabeth Beske Apr 2026

Article Iii's Constraints On The Legislative Power, Elizabeth Beske

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Article III’s heightened concreteness standard for statutory harms takes federal judges deep into legislative terrain, jeopardizing statutory damage provisions and confining Congress to post hoc solutions rather than preemptive strikes. The Supreme Court has insisted that creating a cause of action is a legislative function. At the same time, its recent standing cases instruct lower federal courts to permit suit on statutory injuries only when they find actual harm that bears a tight connection to injuries recognized at common law. This new harm requirement rests uneasily with countless statutes featuring statutory damage provisions that are in place precisely because damages …

Rock On! Examining The Relationship Between Armed Conflict And Rock Protest Music, Dylan Conner Dunn Apr 2026

Rock On! Examining The Relationship Between Armed Conflict And Rock Protest Music, Dylan Conner Dunn

Senior Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between rock protest music and wars, armed conflicts, and other related events. The purpose of this research is to explore how such specific events, or war and conflict in general, influence rock songwriters. This paper examines a series of nine rock songs ranging across five decades, from the Vietnam War to the 2010s. A variety of artists wrote and recorded these songs, ranging from hard rock to classic rock, to folk rock and beyond. Some are more audially intense, lyrically visceral, and featuring explicit language, whereas others are much more stripped-back and “family-friendly.” Each of …

Feeding The Mind: Dietary Consumption And Neural Aging, Bhavani Tuppale Apr 2026

Feeding The Mind: Dietary Consumption And Neural Aging, Bhavani Tuppale

Senior Theses

Neural aging is the process of physiological decline in the brain and increased vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease are associated with aging and the interaction of genetics and lifestyle choices. Previous research studies have connected Alzheimer’s disease with dysfunction in the metabolic system. To combat age-associated dysfunctions in the metabolic system, research studies propose using the ketogenic diet, which utilizes ketone bodies as an energy source instead of glucose. The thesis analyzes literature on the effect of neural aging on various model organisms, how a ketogenic diet affects aging model organisms, and how aging and …

Loss Of Sarm1 Affects Myelin Uptake And Clearance In Macrophages, Grace J. Bergeron Apr 2026

Loss Of Sarm1 Affects Myelin Uptake And Clearance In Macrophages, Grace J. Bergeron

Senior Theses

Clearance of myelin debris is an essential step in nerve regeneration after injury in both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS), a process that is primarily carried out by macrophages. Failure to phagocytose and clear myelin can prolong inflammation and impair recovery. Sterile alpha and TIR motif-containing protein 1 (SARM1) is well researched as a regulator of axonal degeneration, yet its role in macrophages is still unclear. This study investigates how sarm1 deletion and cytokine signaling influence macrophage uptake and clearance of CNS and PNS myelin in vitro. Splenic macrophages isolated from wild-type (WT) and sarm1 …

The Effects Of Climate Change On Competition And Recovery From Disturbance In An Iconic Marine Community, Lauren Tibbits Apr 2026

The Effects Of Climate Change On Competition And Recovery From Disturbance In An Iconic Marine Community, Lauren Tibbits

Senior Theses

This paper explores how the recovery of populations of Semibalanus balanoides is affected by climate variation. In intertidal marine ecosystems, larval recruitment is important in shaping all ecological processes. S. balanoides is a cold-water barnacle species that is competitively dominant over Chthamalus montagui and C. stellatus, two warm-water species. This competitive interaction is well studied, though it is not understood how that competition influences the recovery of S. balanoides after a disturbance nor how this process varies over a temperature gradient. 19 sites were studied across the United Kingdom, spanning from northern Scotland to southwestern England. At each site, a …

Performing Politics: Contextual Shifts In Identity Expression Amongst Ingroup And Neutral Settings, Elsa Geriane Johnson Apr 2026

Performing Politics: Contextual Shifts In Identity Expression Amongst Ingroup And Neutral Settings, Elsa Geriane Johnson

Senior Theses

Increased political divisiveness and the rise of social media have contributed to a widening gap between individuals situated on the political left and right. However, prior research has not determined whether individuals express their political identities similarly when among in-group members versus in more neutral spaces.

Individuals were observed in politically charged settings and in politically neutral settings to determine how the expression of political identities differs when among in-group members versus when discussing politics in classrooms. Data was analyzed using a systemic thematic process through the lens of social identity theory. Findings supported the hypothesis that political identities are …

We're All Ramblers, Here: American National Identity As Articulated Through The Sounds And Stories Of Bluegrass Music, Greyson M. Sherman Apr 2026

We're All Ramblers, Here: American National Identity As Articulated Through The Sounds And Stories Of Bluegrass Music, Greyson M. Sherman

Senior Theses

This creative thesis argues that bluegrass music, through its multicultural origins and its central "Rambler" archetype, articulates a distinctly American negotiation between freedom and rootedness — one that extends far beyond the genre's narrow popular image. Drawing on musicological scholarship and cultural history, the paper first recovers bluegrass's suppressed origins in the convergence of West African, Anglo- Celtic, and broader European traditions, complicating narratives that position the genre as exclusively white and Appalachian. It then introduces the Rambler — the restless, longing figure who haunts bluegrass lyrically and structurally — as both a product of that history and a metaphorical …

Antibiotics And You: A Comprehensive Guide, Brady Haas Apr 2026

Antibiotics And You: A Comprehensive Guide, Brady Haas

Senior Theses

Antibiotic resistance is a rapidly emerging issue within public health. As resistance grows, the effectiveness of traditional antibiotic therapies diminishes while risk of treatment grows. Alongside novel therapies, public knowledge is a strong combatant of the resistance-related risks of antibiotic usage. Through a comprehensive review of current literature, this work serves as an accessible guide to the mechanisms of antibiotics, bacterial resistance, and the challenges related to current antibiotic usage. Additionally, the ability of current policy and emerging novel treatments, such as nanoparticles and bacteriophage therapy, to fight antibiotic resistance is evaluated. This analysis highlights the importance of improving public …

Cell-Free Mitochondrial Dna (Mtdna) Triggers Vascular Dysfunction Via Toll-Like Receptor 9 (Tlr9)-Dependent Activation Of Inflammasomes, Mohin Amin Apr 2026

Cell-Free Mitochondrial Dna (Mtdna) Triggers Vascular Dysfunction Via Toll-Like Receptor 9 (Tlr9)-Dependent Activation Of Inflammasomes, Mohin Amin

Senior Theses

Hypertension is the leading global risk factor for mortality and is closely associated with vascular inflammation and dysfunction. Damaged mitochondria release cell-free mitochondrial DNA (cf-mtDNA), which activates toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9). The binding of TLR9 to mtDNA activates the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway, promoting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines via gasdermin D (GSDMD), therefore worsening inflammation. However, the mechanisms linking mitochondrial injury to inflammation-induced vascular dysfunction remain unclear. We hypothesize that cf-mtDNA triggers TLR9-dependent NLRP3 inflammasome activation contributing to vascular and endothelial dysfunction. To assess that, adult male C57BL/6 were exposed to 28 consecutive days of chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) or …

That’S Sooo Povo!, Sophie O'Toole, Trudy Nolan Apr 2026

That’S Sooo Povo!, Sophie O'Toole, Trudy Nolan

Irish Communication Review

When Chantelle and Craoí, two working class Dublin drama students, lock horns over The Plough and the Stars, their combined rage brings forth Queen Povo, a drag-drenched larger-than-life entity who forces the girlos and the audience to examine what they’re thinking about when they think of class. From D'Girlos Theatre, this riotous, razor-sharp debut crashes through class, art, and authenticity with wit, grit, and glitter. A juicy-tracksuit clad call to arms for anyone who’s ever felt too loud, too real, or just too povo.

Jurisdiction Fiction: Is International Shoe Due For A Pennoyer Moment? Part I, Peter B. Rutledge, E. Reed Lemasters, Caleb Z. Morris

Missouri Law Review

Personal jurisdiction doctrine is a mess. In an attempt to clarify personal jurisdiction doctrine, the Supreme Court has routinely obscured its underlying rationale. That rationale predates the Court’s landmark decision in Pennoyer v. Neff and continues to loom in the background of the most recent post-International Shoe cases. Instead of laying bare that rationale, the doctrine has devolved into a string of proxies built upon proxies—all laboring mightily to avoid stating the obvious: State authority lies at the heart of all personal jurisdiction inquiries. From “physical presence” to “minimum contacts” to “targeting” to “effects” to “relatedness,” all fictions strive to …

Remove To Recruit: The Short-Term Efficacy Of Invasive Shrub Removal In A Minnesota Floodplain Forest, Claire S. Wiley

Biology Honors Projects

Within Midwest floodplain forests, there is a lack of long-term studies focusing on native tree recruitment post invasive shrub removal. With interacting threats such as emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis), invasive earthworms, and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), land managers need particular information about these ecosystems in order to better understand how to protect them. This study aims to explore the efficacy of the removal of Rhamnus cathartica and Lonicera spp. in promoting native tree recruitment within a Minnesota floodplain forest along the Mississippi River. Results revealed that post removal ash (Fraxinus spp.) seedling abundance …

Sir Ywain, Knight Of The Lion, Connor J. Jones

Arthurian Hero Character Design Project

Yvain, the noble and chivalric “Knight of the Round Table,” exemplifies many knightly qualities throughout his life in combat. However, his greatest conflict is not in battle, but within himself as he struggles between his marital obligation and personal pursuit of chivalric responsibility as a member of Arthur’s court. As he matures and grows as a noble knight, his devotion shifts toward aiding the helpless and combating evil. This growth, beginning with his withdrawal from society, reflects his emergence as an honorable knight and is evident in his exceptional Strength, Wisdom, and Charisma. His unique feats and spells, such as …

Sir Yvain, Knight Of The Lion, Paul J. Schwartz Apr 2026

Sir Yvain, Knight Of The Lion, Paul J. Schwartz

Arthurian Hero Character Design Project

Sir Yvain is one of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. He appeared in quite a few stories associated with the Matter of Britain, although almost never as a major character. He was typically portrayed as a loyal supporter and knight of his king. He was also one of the few Arthurian characters seemingly based on a real individual, Owain, a Brythonic king of Rheged; he was engaged in warfare against the Picts, and maybe the early Anglo-Saxon migrations in the late 6th century.1 By examining his martial abilities, his bond with his lion companion, his noble origins, and …

Arthur Pendragon, King Of Britain, Jacob G. Bowser

Arthurian Hero Character Design Project

King Arthur’s historical existence is uncertain, but he may have been a real person, a myth, or based on another figure. The best-known account of his background is from Geoffrey of Monmouth, written around 1136 during the Anglo-Norman dynasty. Arthur is said to have lived in the fifth or sixth century.[1] Reportedly, the son of a British king, he took the throne at age fifteen and married Guinevere. Arthur’s famous sword is Excalibur, and his shield, Pridwen, bears the image of the Virgin Mary. As a king, he conquered Norway, Denmark, and Gaul, and focused on defending his realm …

Merlin, Wizard Of Dyfed, Dermot J. Drew

Arthurian Hero Character Design Project

Merlin is a legendary figure of the Arthurian era and appears across numerous medieval texts. The Life of Merlin describes him as having “lived his life under many kings” and enjoyed the fame as he predicted the future for rulers.[1] Through the use of the Dungeon and Dragons Player’s Handbook and medieval texts, I have created Merlin with an identity as a Human Wizard, sage background, profound intelligence and wisdom, powerful abilities, and a neutral good alignment.
