Biology Faculty Research

A new species of sengi, or elephant-shrew, is described. It was discovered in the northern Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania in 2005. Sengis (Order Macroscelidea, super-cohort Afrotheria) include four genera and 15 species of mammals that are endemic to Africa. This discovery is a significant contribution to the systematics of this small order. Based on 49 camera trap images, 40 sightings and five voucher specimens, the new sengi is diurnal and distinguished from the other three species of Rhynchocyon by a grizzled grey face, pale yellow to cream chest and chin, orange-rufous sides, maroon back and jet-black lower rump and thighs. …

Integrating Random Testing With Constraints For Improved Efficiency And Diversity, Yoonsik Cheon, Antonio Cortes, Martine Ceberio, Gary T. Leavens Feb 2008

Integrating Random Testing With Constraints For Improved Efficiency And Diversity, Yoonsik Cheon, Antonio Cortes, Martine Ceberio, Gary T. Leavens

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Random testing can be fully automated, eliminates subjectiveness in constructing test cases, and increases the diversity of test data. However, randomly generated tests may not satisfy program's assumptions (e.g., method preconditions). While constraint solving can satisfy such assumptions, it does not necessarily generate diverse tests and is hard to apply to large programs. We blend these techniques by extending random testing with constraint solving, improving the efficiency of generating valid test data while preserving diversity. For domains such as objects, we generate input values randomly; however, for values of finite domains such as integers, we represent test data generation as …

A Guide To The Common Native And Exotic Thistles Of South Dakota, Paul J. Johnson, Gary E. Larson, Darrell Deneke Feb 2008

A Guide To The Common Native And Exotic Thistles Of South Dakota, Paul J. Johnson, Gary E. Larson, Darrell Deneke

SDSU Extension Special Series

This guide was compiled to provide an aid for the rapid identification of the more common pest and non-pest thistle species in South Dakota. Because of the great expense of managing and controlling invasive thistles in rangelands, pastures, and croplands, it is essential to be accurate in the identification of any species at hand. The recognition of native species not only helps maintain local biodiversity, but also prevents wasted effort, controls costs, and minimizes herbicide use and chemical pollution. It should be noted that native thistles are important both as floral resources for native pollinating insects and as seed sources …

Correlated Evolution Of Genome Size And Cell Volume In Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), Jessica A. Connolly, Matthew J. Oliver, Jeremy M. Beaulieu, Charles A. Knight, Lars Tomanek, Mark A. Moline Feb 2008

Correlated Evolution Of Genome Size And Cell Volume In Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), Jessica A. Connolly, Matthew J. Oliver, Jeremy M. Beaulieu, Charles A. Knight, Lars Tomanek, Mark A. Moline

Biological Sciences

A correlation between genome size and cell volume has been observed across diverse assemblages of eukaryotes. We examined this relationship in diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), a phylum in which cell volume is of critical ecological and biogeochemical importance. In addition to testing whether there is a predictive relationship across extant species, we tested whether evolutionary divergences in genome size were correlated with evolutionary divergences in cell size (using independent contrasts). We estimated total DNA content for 16 diatom species using a flow cytometer and estimated cell volumes using critical dimensions with scaling equations. Our independent contrast analyses indicated a significant correlated evolution …

The Qualitative Assessment Of Responsiveness To Environmental Challenge In Horses And Ponies, Fabio Napolitano, Giuseppe De Rosa, Ada Braghieri, Fernando Grasso, Aldo Bordi, Françoise Wemelsfelder

Sentience Collection

The responsiveness of 10 horses and 10 ponies to environmental challenge (represented by an open field test) was assessed using a qualitative approach based on free choice profiling methodology (FCP), which gives observers complete freedom to choose their own descriptive terms. Data were analysed with generalised Procrustes analysis (GPA), a multivariate statistical technique associated with FCP. A cross-validation of the outcomes of this approach to data recorded through quantitative behaviour analysis, and through a questionnaire given to the animals’ owner/riding instructor, was also performed using principal component analysis (PCA). Twelve undergraduate students generated their own descriptive vocabularies, by watching 20 …

Medical Progress Depends On Animal Models - Doesn't It?, Robert A. J. Matthews

Validation of Animal Experimentation Collection

Animal models are widely recognized as being essential to the progress of medical science. In countering the critics’ arguments of the use of animals in medicine, one statement has acquired almost talismanic importance:

‘Virtually every medical achievement of the last century has depended directly or indirectly on research with animals.’

In this essay, the origins and justification of this oft-repeated statement are examined. Despite its endorsement by leading academic bodies, it is far from clear that the statement has been, or even could be, formally validated.

Brown Dog Tick: Vector For Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Craig Levy Feb 2008

Brown Dog Tick: Vector For Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Craig Levy

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae), feeds primarily on dogs and until recently was not known to vector Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). In 2003–2004, fourteen cases of RMSF in humans occurred in eastern Arizona in the absence of known vectors, the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, and American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis. However, health officials found brown dog ticks to be very abundant in areas associated with human cases, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) implicated that the brown dog tick was responsible for transmitting RMSF. Brown dog ticks occur throughout the United …

The Resilience Of The Lambs, A. Ross Eckler Feb 2008

The Resilience Of The Lambs, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

A century and three quarters after "Mary Had a Little Lamb" was published, residents of Sterling, Massachusetts and Newport, New Hampshire are still arguing over the ownership of this famous little ditty about the faithful lamb and unwelcoming schoolteacher. According to Sterling, the Mary of the poem was a girl named Mary Sawyer, born there in 1806. One day in 1815 her devoted lamb followed her to school and up the classroom aisle when she was asked to recite a lesson. The teacher, alas, turned the lamb out.

A Seascape Approach To Predicting Reef Fish Distribution, Brian K. Walker Feb 2008

A Seascape Approach To Predicting Reef Fish Distribution, Brian K. Walker

Oceanography Faculty Theses and Dissertations

Linking small-scale measurements of species distributions to broad-scale seascapes is necessary to understanding and predicting organismal distributions and their dynamics. This applies to reef fish populations as well. Reef fish studies are often limited to small spatial scales because of logistical and economic constraints; however, viewing the data at larger spatial scales might elucidate unforeseen relationships and patterns and facilitate regional management and conservation efforts. To address this growing need, an empirical model was created to predict reef fish abundance and species richness for the entire seascape using the relationship between the fish, benthic habitats, and GIS-derived topographic complexity metrics …

Preimplantation Embryo Programming: Transcription, Epigenetics, And Culture Environment., Veronique Duranthon, Andrew J Watson, Patrick Lonergan Feb 2008

Preimplantation Embryo Programming: Transcription, Epigenetics, And Culture Environment., Veronique Duranthon, Andrew J Watson, Patrick Lonergan

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Preimplantation development directs the formation of an implantation- or attachment-competent embryo so that metabolic interactions with the uterus can occur, pregnancy can be initiated, and fetal development can be sustained. The preimplantation embryo exhibits a form of autonomous development fueled by products provided by the oocyte and also from activation of the embryo's genome. Despite this autonomy, the preimplantation embryo is highly influenced by factors in the external environment and in extreme situations, such as those presented by embryo culture or nuclear transfer, the ability of the embryo to adapt to the changing environmental conditions or chromatin to become reprogrammed …

Paediatrics Publications

Hepatic glucose production is normally activated at birth but has been observed in response to experimental hypoglycemia in fetal sheep. The cellular basis for this process remains unknown. We determined the impact of 2 wk of fetal hypoglycemia during late gestation on enzymes responsible for hepatic gluconeogenesis, focusing on the insulin-signaling pathway, transcription factors, and coactivators that regulate gluconeogenesis. Hepatic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and glucose-6-phosphatase mRNA increased 12-fold and 7-fold, respectively, following chronic hypoglycemia with no change in hepatic glycogen. Chronic hypoglycemia decreased fetal plasma insulin with no change in glucagon but increased plasma cortisol 3.5-fold. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1alpha mRNA …

Three Friends Of Swiss-American Science: Louis Agassiz, Arnold Guyot, And Cornelius C. Felton, William A. Koelsch

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The year 2007 is a special one for those interested in Switzerland and in American science. It marks the bicentennial of the births of two Swiss scientists from Canton Neuchatel who came to America in the 1840s, the natural historian Jean Louis Rodophe Agassiz and the geographer-geologist Arnold Henri Guyot. It is also the bicentennial of the birth of the Harvard classicist Cornelius Conway Felton, who became Agassiz' closest American friend and his brother-in-law, and was the translator of Guyot' s first American lectures as well as the instigator of his first book. Agassiz was the eldest, born on 29 …

Effects Of Climate Change On Aquatic Invasive Species And Implications For Management And Research, Roxanne Thomas, Austin Kane, Environmental Law Institute, Britta G. Bierwagen

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Global change stressors, including climate change and variability and changes in land use, are major drivers of ecosystem alterations. Invasive species, which are non-native species that cause environmental or economic damages or human-health impacts, also contribute to ecosystem changes. The interactions between stressors and invasive species, although not well understood, may exacerbate the impacts of climate change on ecosystems, and likewise, climate change may enable further invasions. This report reviews available literature on climate-change effects on aquatic invasive species (AIS) and examines state-level AIS management activities. Data on management activities came from publicly available information, was analyzed with respect to …
